My paternal grandfather (a Nephew) claimed that we had both Seneca and French blood. I can find no evidence of that. I know they came from Canada into the midwest (Michigan, the Dakota Territory, Wisconcin), but can find nothing else.
Please look at my Nephew family tree if you are interested.
Bev Nephew Davis
CA

NEPHEW Josephine Crosetto - Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Josephine Crosetto Nephew passed away Oct. 9, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Health Center with her loving family present.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Youngstown, Ohio where she was baptized.

Josephine, known to her friends as “Joie,” spent the majority of her adult life in Howland, Ohio with her husband of 48 years, the late David Seward Nephew Sr.

Josephine was born on August 23rd in Smoky Hollow, (Youngstown) the daughter of the late Carlo Giovanni Crosetto and Catherine Burns. Always proud of her Italian and Irish heritage, you could often hear her singing That’s Amore or When Irish Eyes are Smiling. She signed all her St. Patrick’s Day cards Josephine O’Nephew. To be in her home was to be surrounded with music, particularly operas and Broadway musicals. She was an avid card player and was known to play Bridge into the night.

Josephine graduated from South High School and Youngstown State University. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed biographies. Her column, “Between the Bookends” with its books reviews and suggested readings appeared in The Youngstowner in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She continued her insatiable thirst for reading into her later years, witnessed by her reading and discussion of the weekly New York Times book review up until a few years ago.

Of all Josephine’s love, the greatest was her love of children. She was ahead of her time when, in 1968, she saw the need for quality child care and established a loving day care, which incorporated many of the now mandated principles seen in today’s child care establishments. Her sitter service was one of the first locally owned and operated babysitting services, where parents could hire bonded sitters from a state licensed sitter service.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Catherine Lucille Choppa, Carl Crosetto, Clarence “Cal” Crosetto and Frances Mae Gardner.

Josephine was the beloved mother of eight children, who will greatly miss her dancing eyes and beautiful smile, Jodie (David) Flickinger of Columbia, S.C., Charmaine Nephew (Rodney Wills) of Charlotte, N.C., David (Susan) Nephew Jr. of Atlanta, Kate (David) Bridge of Cortland, Ohio; the Honorable Theresa (John) Dellick of Canfield, Ohio; Bridget Nephew of Howland, Marlene (Jim) Pelyhes of Mentor, Ohio and John (Tareita) Nephew of Mesa, Arizona; and 12 grandchildren, Leigh, June, Erin, Katie, Aaron, Elizabeth, Corrina, Mary Therese, Annie, John, Julie and John Charles.

Friends may call on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, from 9:30 to 9:55 a.m. at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel in Youngstown, Ohio.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, Ohio.

The family wishes to thank the Assumption Village staff for the loving care given to their mother with special appreciation extended to the nursing staff.

Since there are no calling hours at the funeral home, please do not send flowers.
Mahoning
I am still trying to find information on this family. In original message, I said William "Willie" or "Billie" came to PA. But I was mistaken. The family was told he and his brother came from France and when they got to NY, someone "rolled" them and took their money. Their parents were Vieto Nephew and Hortense Dupien. I have never heard any mention of their being in Canada. William came to Missouri and I don't know the brother's name or where he went. I have alot of information on William, but would love to hear from other family members. I do not know what part of France they came from or what ship in NY.

William moved to St. Louis and his brother stayed in Pa. He was in St. Louis, Mo. working as a driver in 1876. His parents were Vieto and Hortense Nephew. William married Lucy DeGonia 1877 in Old Mines, Washington Co., Mo. They had 11 children. William died 1923 and is buried at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Old Mines, Mo.

Looking for info on Clara who was born 1893, daughter of William Ernest and Lucy DeGonia Nephew in Cadet, Washington Co., Mo. She supposedly left home at 15 years old and moved to the Chicago, Ill. area. She only came home once and the family never heard from her again. The family always said she was involved with gangsters. Per 1910 Washington Co., Mo. census Clara was at home and was 16 years old. Per Letters of Administation in 1923, Clara's name was listed as living in St. Louis, Mo. Clara was also listed in the St. Louis City Phone Directory in 1923.

That you for sharing your family background with me. You've confirmed the fact the information I found in a booklet written by the widow of a minister who once served on the Catt, NY reservation is correct. My main interest in Indian culture and surnames stems from a family mystery I've been trying to solve for many years.

As a young girl, with my uncle, aunt and cousins we drove many times through the Kinzua valley prior to the flooding.
My uncle owned land and a farm house at the top of a hill near a place named Russell. I vaguely recall my teenage cousin driving me and three other cousins down a very steep hill where at the bottom we were able to view, out in a field, the statute of Chief Cornplanter. Often times, while the valley was being torn apart for the building of the dam, my husband and I drove through the valley. It was not a pleasant sight to see particulary in the movement of the cemeteries. If you don't mind telling me, where is the Hillside Cemetery located?
By the way, if you're interested in other references made in the booklet just contact me and I'll give you my e-mail address.
Nephew is a surname of Blacksnake. I descend from his blood. He now rests with my family members at the Hillside Cemetery, which is the relocation cemetery for hundreds of Senecas during the construction of the Kinzua Dam. Nephew is the maiden name carried by my grandmother and she now rests with the Awl Breaker at her side. Coldspring, NY

Found mention on the Internet Public Library (several years ago) of the book written by Blacksnake (Thaonawyuthe) 1760 - 1859. Title is: Blacksnake, Chainbreaker: the Revolutionary War memoirs of Governor Blacksnake as told to Benjamin Williams.
Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1989
Genre: Biography
ISBN: 0803214464 (alk.paper)
Hi Jamie
My name is John Robert Nephew. My father was John Edward Earol My Grandfather John Henery and interestingly enough my great grandfather was John Joseph. They came from Finch Ontario and probably their ancestors came from Malone New York. It seems the family before that were french Cour de bois out of Point Claire Quebec and bejore that Normandy France. I have heard stories that my Grandfather's or Greatgrandfather's brother moved to to Michigan so there is probably a connection. there are Nephew's around Mackinac Island and as you propaply know we have a rare name. Please responde

John
