Re: Nero name

For anyone interested in John B Nero and Mary Henrietta David, I ran into a small breakthrough. It appears that Mary David died sometime before 1908, because John shows up in the 1910 census in Worcester, MA with a different wife. The record shows that it was his second marriage but her first and that it was about a year before. Some of the children also match up. So then I do a little more digging and find the marriage record for his 2nd wife Almira in 1908 on familysearch here (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4F3-XQR) who turns out to be his first wife’s younger sister. Looks like it could very well be a Levirate marriage. This marriage record gives John’s parents names as being Joseph Nero b. French Canada & Mary Gingham b. French Canada.

Another possibility of the last name could be Native American tribes in New Brunswick. In my searches, I’ve run into some records around the right time period in New Brunswick with the name Neroie who’s records indicate that they were “Indian”. It would make sense with Levirate marriage being practiced by some tribes.
I managed to find a second marriage record for John B Nero which matches his 2nd wife's name in the 1910 US census at familysearch:
familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4F3-XQR

There it lists his parents as Joseph Nero & Mary Gingham. More interesting still is his 2nd wife turnes out to be his 1st wife's younger sister after seeing her parents name listed on the marriage record, and that they got married the same year as his first wife's death.

I cannot connect your James Edward Nero to my family. If you check the 1900 US Census for Grafton,MA, you will find John Nero and his family. Based on John Nero's dob, he MIGHT be your James's brother. BUT, I do not have any data to prove or disprove this possibility. (Note:Some of John Nero's children were born in NY). It might be worth checking.

Roland Lapointe
lapoint@verizon.net

I have no direct info to share with you regarding James Nero. My materal grandfather had a brother (Nelson H. Wood) who married a Rosa Nero in 1909 in Grafton, MA.
I've been exploring my grandfather's siblings in hopes of finding a living family member. (Neither I, nor my mother, ever knew my grandfather. My mother was an adopted child.)
If you are looking for Nero ancestors, check surname spelling variations. Check Nereau,Neron,Neuro,Nearo,or Nora. Since many Fr-Canadian immigrants had limited proficiency in English, SOME non-French speaking town clerks and census recorders wrote the last name as it sounded. You also should check "dit names" (a rather common Fr-Canadian naming abberation). Go to AFGS.com (located in Woonsocket,RI). They have a great, easy-to-understand explanation of the "dit" naming process.
Don't give up; the proof will eventually unfold itself to you.

Roland Lapointe
lapoint@verizon.net

NERO, NEYROD, CHAMBOUR and DORVILLE

This is a stab in the dark. Does anyone know of any connection between these families?

My great-grandfather was Charles DORVILLE, born 1851 in France, died in New Orleans, La. Nov. 1878 of yellow fever at age 27.

His wife Marie's last name was either NEYROD/NEYROUD or CHAMBOUR. She was also born in France. She died Oct. 1910 in MS.

A family story says that her mother was a NERO, of France..no other info given.

There is a marriage certificate in New Orleans dated January 09, 1875 for a Charles Ernest DORVILLE and
Marie NEYROD, which I believe to be my great-grandparents. However, my grandfather's baptismal certificate Oct 1875 in Opelousas, La. says his mother was Marie CHAMBOUR.

I am wondering if the name Neyrod could be an American misspelling of NERO. I feel sure the baptismal certificate giving her name as CHAMBOUR is my gfather's, but don't have a clue as to how the name NERO got into the family lore, unless NEYROD should have been NERO, and the Priest did not record all of her name on the baptismal.

Any help will be appreciated.

Doris Davis

My Great Grandmother was married to a Lewis Nero.
He ,I believe, was born in New York. This Lewis Nero is buried in Sapulpa, Okla. at South Heights Cemetry.
I know that Lewis married Lucy Stafford-Haney in Mo.
Not sure where in Mo. Maybe Laclede County.
That is where I find Lewis and Lucy Nero selling some land
to my Grandfather in March 1919.
I am not sure what year they moved to Sapulpa.
My grandfather moved here in Sapula sometime after June 1922. The cemetry is always kept up. I live only 2 blocks from it.
By the way My name is Bill Haney.
