Re: Bird Song NEWBERN

Hi,

Well I don't know where to begin. There's so much history that has been passed down that right now I'm getting quite confused. Asberry Hill was sent to live with a Dr. Newbern and took on his name. He met an Indian woman, "Martha A. Parker" and married her. Asberry was a half white/half indian man. Now this is where I am having trouble because on the census Martha's name isn't given. The census states that he married Lucy and Louvenia then married my grandmother's mom "Lizzie Bush". I was also informed that he had only 2 sons "Walter and Bird Song" but, now from doing more research it's stating that he has 3 sons and 3 daughters. So I'm quite thrown off right now. Children from a previous marriage? Maybe.

I have a family tree that was written by Walter Pedro Newbern the son of Walter Newbern stating the family line and he only names himself and Birdsong and not the 4 other children as siblings. (Mattie, Hunter, David and Georgia).

So for right now I'm back to square one and have to rethink this through.

I'm taking a chance here since this was posted so long ago. I am a decendant of Bird Song Newbern or Bird Saine Newborn.

My Newbern family has been living in Jackson, TN; Medon, TN out of Madison Co., TN since the mid 1800's.

Bird Song's brother's name was George Walter Newbern. Both of these gentlemen were half indian/half white. Bird Song married my Great Grandmother African American Woman (Lizzie Bush) and George W. Newbern married her sister Mattie Newbern. Please email me with a response if you have any information. Bird Song had 12 children with Lizzie (I have all that information) and George W. Newbern had 8 children (I have that information as well)

I am replying to your message. My gr gr grandmother was Sylvia Newbern. Could she be a ancestor/relative of yours? Was there any sister, aunt, or cousin of any of your ancestors with that name?

Sylvia was born in Denmark, Tenn before 1830 and died after 1844.She married Stanford Weddle in/near Denmark, Tenn. They possibly lived on a slave plantation and had a daughter named Malissa (Lizzie) Weddle in 1845. Melissa later married a slave with the last name Harris on a nearby plantation.

Please inform me if the names, dates, locations are in your family. Thirkell

Dora & Jeff NEWBERN -- Denmark, Tennessee

My g-grandparents were Dora and Jeff Newbern of Denmark Tennessee. Dora's mother was said to be born to a white slave owners wife who had an affair with a Indian servant. She gave the baby to her african house maiden and ordered her to claim it as her own when the Master returned from the Civil War. That, child was my g-g-grandmother, and i dont know her name, only the story of her birth.

Dora and Jeff had about 9 children: Minnie, Alma, Ester & Joe (Twins), Juke, Maryjane, Sid, Patt and Marie ('Chigga').

Maryjane moved to Southern California in the late 1920's. Minnie, Alma, Patt moved to Detroit in the mid 1940's. Joe settled in Chicago in the late 1930's and was a small time lawyer.

Ester Newbern married Irvin Fuller (of Mercer, TN) and they lived in the west part of Jackson, Tennessee. They had 11 children: Kenneth, Woodrow (Deaf/mute), Geneva, Lucille, Jeff, Rance, Marylou, Irvin Jr., Mary Ruth, Dora, Wm. Quinn.

Ester and Irvin were moved to St. Louis in the early 1950's with their 2nd oldest by their three youngest childen.

The Newbern and Fuller clans of Jackson, Tn were said to be rather popular for their tough fisted and sharp tongued personalities, yet a very comical and adventurous family. Though they were considered minorities, they were well respected by the white people of their town. Because of their obvious Indian features, they were often refused liquor at taverns and saloons.

I would really to connect with all who may have to some kind of ties or acquaintance with my family. Will expand on other decendants upon receipt of a reply. Thanks

She was listed as age 13 in a census in Batavia, Kane Co., Ill. I am sorry, but I found no one else by that name in her files. If you have other names, I will look them up for you.

My great great grandmother's name was Sylvia Newbern. She was born in the early 1800s. The only information that I have about her is that she married Stanford Weddle. They had a daughter Melissa (Lizzie) Weddle in 1847 in or near Denmark, Tennessee. They were all enslaved. Please inform me if you have researched a Sylvia Newbern or if your Newbern family lived in or near Denmark which is not too far from Memphis.
Mary Card Yarnell wrote a book on the Newburn family. Her daughter has sent me all of her research material. Within it are literally hundreds of 3x5 cards that list just about every Newbern that must have been in the US prior to 1900, and the variations. Many of them are African American. If you have specific names, I will try to look them up for you.
Does anyone know who the mother of Thomas 1770 is? Elizabeth Sparkman has been listed but she and Thomas b. 1750 were married in 1788 and there is documentation to prove that. So the next question is who did Thomas 1750 marry before E. Sparkman?

I just ran across your post. I am a descendent of William Newbern Brown who was born in NC and died in Bond County Illinois about 1832. He was only 32 at the time of his death. He was a Methodist minister and married Lucy Hubbard. They had several children, one of which was Martha Brown who was my great great great grandmother. I believe he was the son of Wilson Brown or perhaps the younger brother of Wilson Brown.

I noticed your name on many postings on the Newbern board, especially in Georgia. My Grandfather was a Newbern from Georgia - Joseph Tinner Newbern. He was born 28SEP1915, died SEP1999. He was buried in Coffee County. He married twice - 1st to Phyllis Cates of Florida circa 1942 and had 1 child. Does any of this info correlate to your ancestry?

Joel, It will only work if your last name is newbern or some form of that. It That is the case you can go to Familytreedna.com then go to projects, then the n"s and then newbern project. There you can sign up tobe tested. I started the project and am project manager but so far only one other newbern, newborn, newburn or other spellings have tested and we were a match. Hope you will join in this.

Many already know this but just in case if many hasn't run across this here it goes.

MANY, of the transcribed records I have found hvae been typed up as all or a variation of ern/orn/urn because of HOW some of our ancestors signed their names OR how OTHERS signed their names.
I have records that are positively concerning MY Newbern ancestors BUT they are recorded as Newborn or Newburn. I bet if a number of us males of EACH spelling took some DNA tests we would find this to be true, keep this in mind because the missing link/links you MAY find under another spelling, I've found instances of where a male just decided on his own to change the spelling so then thereafter ALL his sons etc would be listed NOT as birth or actual DNA name.

DRED'S father was ETHELDRED/DRYDEN/DRED spelled various ways.He was born in 1794/1874 & married BETSY SIRMANS, so it would be very easy to confuse them. The 1st one mentioned fought in the Civil War.

Ben, you are correct. I meant Etheldred (Dred) Newbern, not Dryden. Etheldred, Sr. is my ggggrandfather.

Is it possible that the funeral home in Pearson, or surrounding areas, could have a record of the death if it's in the 20's or 30's?

Has anyone researched this?
