Just wondered if anyone else is researching the Newbys from this area I have two trees, one from Cartmel dating back to 1600's and one from Furness also dating back to 1600's, up to now I have not been able to link the two together, the link may be further back in time.

Are those places. I have heard of Cartmel from a cousin that was talking, but he made it sound like it was a type of business.

Cartmel is a very small town in North West England and Furness is a large penninsular closeby. Originally they were part of the county of Lancashire but now they are in the county of Cumbria.

I have an ancester called Frances (aka Fanny) Newby who was born in Cartmel in 1816. Her father was a Robert Newby.

Unfortunately, Newby is/was a popular name in that part of England. There is even a place called Newby Bridge not far from Cartmel.

Just seen your post. I have traced a May Newby born in 1902 in Furness, the daughter of Bessie Williams and Valter Newby. Bessie and May left for New York in 1905 to join Valter. Could there be any link here to your tree?

Sorry I don't think there is a link my Newbys left Cartmel/Furness around 1825 and settled in Liverpool.

I believe his wife was called Sarah with a birth date of abt. 1783, but I'm not 100% about this.
