Newbys from Norwich, England - fairground and publican connections

I'm researching the Newby family from Norwich who worked the fairgrounds around Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire.

They also have a publican connection.

The main members I've traced so far are:

William Newby (b1806) m Sarah ? (family includes James, Sarah, Charlotte, Harriet, Robert)

James Newby (b 1852) m Margaret Summers, children Susan, Matilda, Margaret, Harriet, Christopher, Julia, Rebecca and James. Many of the children married into other fairground families - Abbot, Bond, Cater

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who might have a connection.

Susan
May thanks for the information in your last post. It is interesting that the surname Carter appears because this crops up as a first name further down the family tree and we had wondered about its origins.
Ian
Thanks or your email. No, I don't have much information on Robert.
All I know are the possible names of 4 of his children, he may have had more. They were...
Sarah
Peter b. 4 Jun 1808
Thomas b. 4 Aug 1810
Frances b. abt 1816

I believe his wife was called Sarah with a birth date of abt. 1783, but I'm not 100% about this.

If you do have any more information on this family it would be very welcome.
Thanks
Ian.

Help! Trying to locate any relatives of May Newby who married my grandfather Edward George Godfrey in Canada in 1924. They then moved to the USA, taking Edward's son by a previous marriage with them (Albert William James Godfrey). Believe May and Edward may have had another son, Paul. Are there any relatives of May Newby out there who can shed light on what happened to the family. Would be grateful for any information.

John

Hi,

All I have on May Newby is that her father was Walter Newby, her Mother Bessie Williams and she emigrated to Montreal, Canada in March 1924. She married Edward George Godfrey in York, Toronto on 21st April 1924. Edward had a son called Albert Frederick William Godfrey who was born in about 1920. Believe they went to USA (possibly Boston) not long after they married.

John

I believe the name is Zacheus, named as a grandchild in the will of Thomas Newby of Granville Co., N.C. in 1791, migrated with his uncle John to Madison Co., Ky., about 1787, married Winnifred Perkins, 10/29/1810. Children are John, James & Jesse. They lived up river from Valley View in "the Bent." Winnifred is buried in the Jesse Newby Cemetery in the Baldwin area.

I have all or most Madison County descendants through the early 1900s. arrparx@gmail.com

Yes, he was in the US Navy. He joined when he was 17. I have a record that he was a radioman on the ship USS Okenagan (sp?). While he was aboard ship the movie AWAY ALL BOATS starring Jeff Chandler was filmed. We called him Dick. Dick helped teach me to drive when I was in high school. Dick also left Chandler, Arizona to go to work on the Alaska piplline. Feel free to ask any questions. My father is Dick's brother and Dick still has 2 sisters and 3 brothers living.
I have tried to email you Lou - but it does not connect.

Are you talking of Durham City or the County of Durham?
The latter was a huge area with today millions of people, despite the fact that (by act of Parliament) its area is a mere fraction of what it was in 1800.
Sunderland, Bishopswearmouth, Monkswearmouth and no doubt many other towns now said to be in "Tyne and Wear" were historically part of County Durham, which stretched from the rivers Tyne and Derwent in the north to the river Tees in the south.

My ancestors derive from Sunderland, Bishopswearmouth, South Shields and the bit of Nwcastle south of the river, all of which were in Durham County
Contact me at johnfree@uk2.net
We may be able to help each other
Re: Which John Newby at Boonesborough 1779?

I think I may have answered my own question. Today, through the National Archives, I accessed online the pension application of the Pulaski County John Newby. By his declaration he served from April 1777 until August 1880 in eastern Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. There is no evidence that he was in Kentucky in 1779.

I remain curious as to why John Newby isn't on French Tipton's list of Madison Countians at Boonesborough.

Jim

yes, I am researching Newby's in Cartmel.

I have an ancester called Frances (aka Fanny) Newby who was born in Cartmel in 1816. Her father was a Robert Newby.

Unfortunately, Newby is/was a popular name in that part of England. There is even a place called Newby Bridge not far from Cartmel.
Cartmel is a very small town in North West England and Furness is a large penninsular closeby. Originally they were part of the county of Lancashire but now they are in the county of Cumbria.

Which John Newby at Boonesborough 1779?

A John Newby signed a petition from the inhabitants of Boonesborough, Ky., to the Virginia legislature in October, 1779. Has anyone identified this John Newby?

One candidate is John Newby from Chesterfield Co., Va., who served 3 years in the Virginia Line during the American Revolution. Two companies of soldiers from Virginia were at Boonesborough that year. This John Newby received a land warrant for his service and settled on Pittman Creek in Pulaski County, Ky.

Another is John Newby from Granville Co., N.C., which was also the home of Richard Henderson and other organizers of the Transylvania Company which hired Daniel Boone to establish Boonesborough. In 1784, in Wake Co., N.C., this John Newby married Susannah Embry, whose brother Talton has been identified as having been at Boonesborough in 1780. John Newby, Susannah and Talton Embry (among others) left North Carolina and settled in Madison Co., Ky., a few miles from Boonesborough between 1784 and 1789.

Does anyone know for sure who the Boonesborough John Newby is? Any help or reasoned speculation would be greatly appreciated.
Is the Gabriel that you are talking about the Gabriel that came over from England? I know that a Gary Newby might know that information that you are looking for. Was John, James or Samuel someone that worked at a Grismill? If so, they Gabriel is their father. And you probably really want to talk to Gary.

Just wondered if anyone else is researching the Newbys from this area I have two trees, one from Cartmel dating back to 1600's and one from Furness also dating back to 1600's, up to now I have not been able to link the two together, the link may be further back in time.
