Interesting article. I know that Viloria/Violra was the daughter of Charles and Catherine Newland. She is living with the Dorman Family in the 1870 Census. I found her living in Potter in the 1875. Now the reason she was living with the Dorman family makes sense. In the 1860 Census she is living with her family. Do you have any idea what happens to her after the 1875 Census.

I do know that her brother Hezekiah was fostered out to his older sister Lucy and her husband.

As for a bound person it would be that either her parents were paid an amount for her service or she bound because her parents may have owed the Dorman some sort of funds, or property. Considering Dorman put in an ad in the paper he would have had a legal right to her.

I found an interesting article in a November, 1871 issue of the Yates County Chronicle"

Nov. 18 - “Viloria Newland, aged 11 years, a bound girl to the subscriber, left his service October 13, 1871 without his leave or knowledge and without any cause or provocation and has remained absent ever since. All persons are strictly forbid harboring her or trusting her on my account, as I shall pay no debts of her contracting. James Dorman, Benton”

The question is ...,. What kind of an arrangement is this? It sounds almost like indentured servant. Does anyone know what became of Viloria? She was the daughter of Charles and Catherine Newland.

I have done a lot of research on our family.
Verda was the daughter of Joseph Mingus and Edith Chambers.
Joseph's sister Ellen Mingus (my gg grandmother) was married to Will Chambers (my gg grandfather).
Tennie Rone (maiden name) raised Verda for a bit according to the census. Gray

I bought this from Sistler - a TN bookseller who is on line.

this book contains Grant Books F - P and covers as it says 1742-1775. I think in my previous message I gave the page numbers. If you go to a good geno library they will have a copy, or you can order it from Sisters.
Or maybe get it on inter-library loan.
ISBN 0-8063-1229-7
second printing 1993

hope that is some help for you. There are some great books out there with land records.....I usually do TN research and there are no census records till 1830 for my area so I have to use land, court, and military records. Now for VA - it also lost its 1790 census etc. due to the British burning Washington D.C. in 1812.....so the 1800 is gone to I think - but you check that. I know for Shenandoah Co VA the 1790 census is really the 1785 head of household and my Turneys were still there in VA......but they sold their VA land 1787 and were in KY by 1789 and on tax list there - which was used for the 1790 KY census......so they appear in both VA and KY 1790 census books. That is why on those 1790, 1800, 1810 census you have to look at what it was taken from, if it is actual census, or a state tax list taken in an off year.

Sorry to bend your ear, but a lot of people don't know that about TN and KY, etc. census.

Mary Turney Miller

Newlands appear to be German speaking, so you have to look at different spellings of the name way back when it was changing from German spelling to English. Nuland is an early spelling I have seen. Just be glad you to have Swartz which often became Black, or Sommer which became Summer, or that Painter / Bender family.

Not sure I had these deeds listed.
My Great-Grandfather Perley Wayne Newlun lived in Colorado and I'm trying to verify strong links between these Nulens in VA (on to Ohio) and back to MA (William?) farther still among the Quakers.
I found the following obit. for John Keran.

John Keran, 90, a Fremont County pioneer died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.S. Pierce north of Thurman. Mr Keran was an old resident of the community, locating there forty years ago. Her was born in Ogalze[Auglaize?] County, Ohio. HIs wife is dead. Of the eleven children, five survive with 37 grandchildren, and 76 great grandchildren.
Burial was in Thurman (cemetery).

I still only know of three children, does anyone know of the other children?

I recently have been in contact with a woman who is also a decendant of John and Mary Keran. But her information shows that Mary Ellen Newland father was Herrod (Harrod) Newland and mother was Anna Beekman. I think Mary Ellen was a common name and there are several Mary Ellen's. Does anyone have solid information on the family. Also I have pieced together John and Mary's family and now have possibly nine of their eleven children's names and will gladly share what I have.
