The late Mrs. Joy Newport Jepson (1931-2011), of Silver Spring, Maryland did extensive genealogical research. It was a last request that her papers be shared with other researchers. Her files are presently stored in 24 boxes in the possession of her executor, Walter R. Jepson of Friendsville, Maryland. For more information see webpage: http://www.longwebs.org/genealogy/JepsonFiles/index.htm

Was immigrants Marian NEWPORTE (md.1632 Wm. HATCHER) related to the other NEWPORTS in Ogbourne St. George, Wiltshire, England?

In the SLC Family History library, British film #1,279,418 item 26-30 I found the 27 December 1632 Ogbourne Saint George, Wiltshire, England marriage of immigrants to America Marian NUPORT/NEWPORTE/NEWPORT and Col. William (Guilemeau) HATCHER (d. 1 Apr 1680 Henrico Co., Virginia.

Although I never found the christening of Marian Newporte, I found the 14 Aug 1614 christening of Col. William Hatcher as well as his brother Robert Hatcher's 6 July 1609 in Ogbourne Saint George records listing their father as William Hatcher, Sr.. I never found who William married but I believe that William Hatcher, Sr.'s possible brother Richard Hatcher on 7 July 1609 married Alice Painter in Ogbourne Saint Andrew, Wilshire, England.

I need to do a lot more work on the HATCHERS, but I've worked thousands of hours on the Newports with only minor success.

The following is some documentation I have on the Newports with a lot of assumptions on my part.

Richard NEWPORTE/NEWPORT/NUPORT b. abt 1494 Wiltshire, England died bef 1568 High Ercall, Shropshire, England.

This Richard Newporte had at least 2 sons: Walter NEWPORT (aft 1566 nothing else known about Walter) & perhaps my Robert NEWPORT (will 1566 Ogbourne-Saint George) who had at least a dau. Alice and three known sons: John, William, and Geoffrey Newporte.

Robert Newporte sons are possibly as follows (1) Geoffey Newporte (d. 1578 md 18 Oct 1574 Wilcot Parish, Wiltshire, England to Mary Pryor who married 2nd in 1578 to John Burden). Geoffrey and Mary Pryor Newporte had a son Vincent Newporte and perhaps a son William and an daughter Agnes Newporte. Agnes was married 9 Apr 1592 in Wilcot Parish to James Wicke.

(2) John Newporte md Elizabeth _?_ and had a son Nathan Newporte christened 26 Mar 1594/1595 in Ogbourne St. George. I haven't found anymore on John or his family.

(3) Perhaps my William NEWPORT (will 1605 Ogbourne-SG), who md 1st Marian _?_ who died 1 Jan 1582 Ogbourne SG and 2nd Joan _?_. William and his 2nd wife Joan _?_ had 3 daughters Amy, Mary, and Elizabeth, but I don't have anything on them after Williams 1605 will. Joan _?_ Newport had md 2nd Thomas Potter 25 Aug 1606 Ogbourne SG. Both Joan and Thomas Potter died in 1623.

My William NEWPORT I believe had at least a son Robert and at least 5 daughters. Daughter Margaret died before the 1605 will, Amy, Mary, and Elizabeth NEWPORT were unmarried at the time of their father's 1605 will which is why I assume they were daughter's of his 2nd marriage to Joan _?_ Newport. Daughter Margaret who died before the 1605 will I assume was a daughter of his 1st wife Marian _?_ Newporte along with Elizabeth Newporte (died 24 Aug 1612 Ogbourne SC) the wife of Edmund Pithouse of nearby Ogbourne St Andrew and mother of at least 4 Pithouse children.

I believe that the Robert NEWPORT (wife unknown) who was probably the Robert who was the son of my supposed William (will 1605 OSG)was the only male NEWPORT having children in Ogbourne-St. George at the time my Marian NEWPORT md 1632
my William HATCHER (son of William HATCHER) before they went to America.

This Robert NEWPORT had at least 2 sons (Joseph Newporte (d. 1631 OSG) and John Newporte (chr. 1621 Ogbourne St. Andrew)and 2 other daughters (Abigail Newporte (chr. 1608 OSG) and Elizabeth Newporte (chr. 1612 OSG), but I don't know when any of them married where they went or anything else. The children could be wrong or incomplete because I couldn't find a christening, marriage, or will for Robert Newporte; therefore, these are only assumptions unless documented with a date.

It bothers me that I can't find Marian Newporte's christening or any other information about her except her marriage to William Hatcher, but the Bishop's transcripts records are incomplete and I was unable to find any comple parish records. Marian could be from any of the other Newportes so mentioned or not.

Is there anyone working on any of these families? I would love to find someone or someplace where I can get information on these NEWPORTS and/or HATCHERS of Wiltshire, English families. Any help would be gratefully appreciated

April

I also have been trying to link myself to Captain Newport, only to be stopped short by the records. I've traced through other trees all the way to Francis/Richard Newport born 1549 and Margaret Bromeley, but then I get stuck because I'm not sure which first name is correct. It's also difficult because idk if he had brothers, what their names where, who his parents were; he was so famous, yet we know so little about his personal life; it's frustrating.

Hola Sandra,

Back in 2005 (when I posted this) I had just begun my journey but now I'm pretty much stuck on where the Newport sur-name will take me. I believe MY Newport came from England but not by way of Captain Newport.

Now if I'm related to Captain Newport some how back in England I haven't figured out how to really persue that route even with a world subscription.

Anyways I'm still trying but I've long decided that at this moment I've got no relationship with him.

It could be true. Anyway, when I saw your post I had to write - maybe we're related. Let me know if you want to persue this.
Sandra Newport Fenner

Thanks Elvie Ann
There is no obvious connection but I am still searching for the village my NEWPORTs came from so it is one of the many possibilities. I am interested in any NEWPORTs pre 1820 in Somerset. If you have any info in a form that you can easily send I would appreciate it to bwn@bigpond.com

Thanks
Bruce Newport
Melbourne
Australia

I have Newport ancestors from Somerset. My grandfather, Wilfred Newport, was born in Wincanton in 1893; his father and grandfather (Charles Alfred, and Robert, were born in Compton Pauncefoot); and George was born in Sparkford.

If anyone knows the parents of George (b. abt 1776) please let me know. George appears on the 1851 census as head of household. His son, Robert, and Robert's family are living with him.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn...

Descendants of George NEWPORT
1 George NEWPORT 1776 - 1861
.. +Mary UNKNOWN
........ 2 Robert NEWPORT 1818 -
............ +Hannah SNOOK 1817 - 1876
................... 3 Jane Newport 1841 -
................... 3 John Newport 1843 -
................... 3 James Newport 1844 -
................... 3 George Newport 1848 - 1901
................... 3 Samuel Newport 1849 -
................... 3 Anne Newport 1851 -
................... 3 Julia Newport 1853 -
................... 3 Ellen Newport 1854 -
................... 3 Charles Alfred NEWPORT 1856 - 1915
....................... +Annie Eliza JEWELL 1858 -
............................. 4 Walter Newport 1889 - 1969
................................. +Nora J.

I have this line back to 1369, however, I have not done any of the research myself and it is probably 20 years since I obtained the information; it would all need to be verified.

I descend from Eliza NEWPORT m Charles Benny KIDSON in Nelson NZ in 1867. They were my GGGgrandparents. Also, John KIDSON, (father of Charles Benny KIDSON)wrote that his father was Thomas GODDARD of the Bull Inn in Peascod Street, Windsor, London. Thomas married Sarah NEWPORT, daughter of Samuel NEWPORT and Martha STYLES.

So it is possible that I am doubly descended from this NEWPORT lineage.

I am willing to pass on my NEWPORT info, on the basis that it does need to be verified. (and would be very interested in hearing from anyone with any info on Thomas GODDARD & Sarah NEWPORT)

Gavin

Her neighbor was Nanablue!

We are not sure if Katie and Henry were married....I can find no information on him.

The Margaret you are refering to is not a blood relation, but Nana Clark lived with Josephine's (Margaret) family...Anne Quigley.

Brick wall on Columbus Newport - Scott TN

I am trying to determine if my g-g-grandfather Columbus Newport (who married Allis Lewellen) aka Alice Llewellen is the son of James Monteville Newport (b. 1841) and wife Elizabeth Sharp. I know that James' brother, Columbus Newport, born in 1856 in TN married a Mary Walden, so that cannot be him!

Both James and his brother Columbus are descended from Joseph Newport and Lucretia Begley. (Someone posted here that Lucretia's last name was Griffith, so not sure about sources there..)

I have not been able to find credible info on Columbus Newport who fathered Carley Dester Newport.

Need dates/places of birth, death, and marriage for Columbus Newport, son of James Mounterville Newport and Elizabeth Sharp -- Columbus married Allis Llewellen. Need to locate if there were any other children, besides Carley Dester Newport, who was born 12/1/1879? I know that Allis Newport went on to marry Jasper Jeffers on 14 March 1887.

If anyone has any sources that could break this brick wall, I would appreciate it. Many thanks!

It certainly does bear investigation as I have John Newport fathering a total of fifteen children from three different wives, one of these children been Samuel (m. Martha Stiles).
I will email you the website and password where I have been getting the majority of my information. If there any discrepancies I would like them cleared up as my intention is to have the tree bound for my children.

Hi again,
Would appear as though you missed my point. How can we descend from someone who had NO children ?.
The Peerage information looks good on paper but that's about all.NOBODY has offered any PROOF of these claims.
No birth entry for John Harrison,no marriage entry for John & Elizabeth, not even a surname for her.Samuel & Martha did not even name a daughter Elizabeth nor did any future generations.
I do have a photocopy of the hand written 1735 Private Act passed by the House of Lords changing John Harrison's surname to Newport plus many pages of other information but as he died WITHOUT issue it's of no use.
My wife Norma is the gg granddaughter of Samuel & Ann & as I said I am a g grandson of Joseph & Mary.
Also I am in regular touch with Marilyn who descends from both Joseph (through Walter)& stephen.she helped with much of the research.
My email address is chapman-stone@xtra.co.nz if you wish to contact me direct.
Bill
Hi Bill

thepeerage.com has Francis (1619/20 - 1708) as the 1st Earl,
Richard (1644 - 1723) the 2nd, Henry (1683 - 1734) as the 3rd but then Thomas (Abt 1696 - 1762, son of Richard) succeeding to the title on 23 Dec 1734, upon the death of Henry.
This site states that John inherited the estates but not the titles of Earl, Viscount and Baron.
Burkes is one of their sources and also The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct or Dormant, new ed., 13 volumes in 14 (1910-1959; reprint in 6 volumes, Gloucester, U.K.: Alan Sutton Publishing, 2000)

I will check on Samuel, as I have him dying 23 Oct 1814 in Great Missenden.

I am a 3rd great grandson of Walter, son of Joseph and his first wife Ann. Ann died in 1827, Joseph married Mary Chilton 1837 and they arrived in Nelson aboard the Sir Charles Forbes with Josephs brothers Samuel, Stephen and their families.
Yes, Hazel and Ed were my husband's Grandparents. Are your family members from the Nova Scotia area? We have heard about that branch of the family over the years, but don't know much. Hazel did give me a little information before her death a few years ago. Ed has been gone for about 20 years now. What little I have I would be glad to share. Email me at newportpatricia@hotmail.com

Edward Charles Newport was the brother of my grandmother Alice Pauline Frye (nee Newport). So I guess he would be my mother's Uncle Edward - he married a Hazel, I know my mom had an Aunt Hazel. My Mom (dau of Alice Newport and Glen Frye) and Grandmother have both passed on so it is difficult to find any details). Is your husband's grandmother named Hazel? I have a copy of a lovely letter she wrote to my Mom -- they corresponded intermittently.
