Hi Karen,

I no longer subscribe to Ancestry.com but I was browsing and found your note.

If my research is accurate, you are a descendant of Jesse Newstead (b. 1794), the son of Benjamin and Ann Wilkins. I am a descendant of George Newstead (b. 1796) who was a brother of Jesse.

If you need more, you can reach me on lgnewstead@hotmail.com

Regards,
Lloyd Newstead

Possible Newstead ancestors in MA, NH, NY?

After searching through the LDS genealogical database and what census records I could find, I came across three individuals who just might be my paternal g-g-g-grandfather, g-g-grandfather, and g-grandfather. All of them, like my grandfather, are named George, which could explain why my research has been so difficult so far.

The first is George H. Newstead, who according to the Mormon database was born in England in 1829. He was living in Oswego, New York by 1850, where his son--George Newstead II--was born four years later.

Near as I can make out, George II's son George F. Newstead was born in 1882 in either Massachusetts or Cheshire, NH, depending on which source is correct. He died in 1966. Cheshire, NH is the birthplace of my maternal grandmother (Charlotte Rawson) incidentally, which is important for reasons I'll get to in a moment.

The 1920 census for Cheshire, NH lists my grandfather, George Lyman Newstead, as a 10-year-old living with an uncle. He had been born in Massachusetts originally--perhaps both parents died, and he was sent to New Hampshire to live with the uncle? (Now we know how my grandparents met, I think). Is it possible then that the uncle might be the aforementioned George F., if he's not George Lyman's father?

Living in the same household, by the way, was a four-year old girl, Cora, meaning she was either the younger sister or cousin of George Lyman. I don't know which yet. If anyone can corroborate or clarify any of the above information, contact me at rnewstead@sbcglobal.net.

Rachel Newstead

Hi Karen,
Sorry to hear about your dad. Good ridance to 2008, it has not been a good year for us either. Tracy's Gr Gr Gr Gr Grandfather was a Henry Newstead who was a solicitor who established Newstead and Walker solicitors in Otley. One of Henry's chrildren was called Henry James and he married Isabel Adolphine Gwyther. He was also a solicitor. They had a child called Henry Ernest who married Lillian Wall. He did not want to be a solicitor so he moved to Nottingham to be a mechanical Engineer. He had a son called Reginald Charles (Tracy's Granddad) who married Gwendoline Wright. They had a son called Reginald (Tracy's dad) who married Dorothy Stokes. They had Tracy and 7 other children.

We are probably connected somewhere down the line, it will just take a bit of working out. You can email me on garrysonic@aol.com

Hope to talk soon.

Regards

Garry and Tracy

She was the daughter of John Leonard Green b. 1841, d. 1919 and Melinda Ann Teed b. 1846, d. 1910.

Mary married Frank Kinney Newsted, b. 14 Apr 1865 in Greenwood St. Clair County, Michigan and died d. 1 Feb 1905 in Lincoln county Ontario. They were married in Ruby Michigan on 6 Jan 2897. Frank was the second of 8 sons born to David Newsted, b. 11 Nov 1837 and Jane Esmond Vincent, b. 21 Nov 1838, d. 6 May 1884.

Frank and Mary had three sons; George H. b. 18 Feb 1902 d. 15 Jul 1978, Hazen Frank b. 14 Nov 1900, d. 5 May 1963, and Percy Green b. 21 Sep 1904, d. 21 Sep 1904

FRANK NEWSTED born April 1865. In the 1900 census he was a farmer living in Brockaway, St. Clair Co., MI, aged 35, born in Michigan on April 1865: it recorded his father born in England (but actually Canada) and mother in Michigan, he had been married three years; wife was Mary Green Newsted, born September 1869, mother of no children. Frank and Mary later had thre children; Hazen Frank, George H., and Percy G. Newsted. Frank was killed in a train accident in Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada in 1905. Then working for the railroad the train moved and severed his legs.

Frank was my great granduncle and I am close to his grandson, David Hazen Newsted. I have photos of Frank and Mary's grave marker and all of her descendents if you're interested.

Best, Bill Newsted

I recently found out that my paternal grandmother, Charlotte Newstead (nee Rawlston) was born in Connecticut on 4/9/1920, and died in New Hampshire in March 1975. My grandfather, George L. Newstead, was born in Massachusetts (I'm assuming at least in the same county as my father) in 1910, and died in 1979. I've pinned my father's birthplace down to Westminster, MA. If anyone has any birth records/announcements for George L. Newstead, marriage records, or his parents' names and places of birth, please contact me at rnewstead@sbcglobal.net.

Nothning new--in fact, looking over my original post, I made an embarrassing error, thinking your post read "New York" instead of the York in England. My ancestors came to Canada from England and settled in upstate New York and New England.

However, my paternal grandfather was named George Newstead, as was an uncle. So there is a possibility he could have been *named* for your George. From the research I've done, it appears "George" is in fact an often-used name in the Newstead family.

Rachel, am interested to know if you found out anything more about your possible George Anderson Newstead of York, son of my ancestor Ellen Anderson Newstead. Doesn't seem like a very common name, we ought to be able to track down more ancestors. I know I probably contacted you before, but my computer went crazy (something I said to it no doubt!) and I no longer have any of our contact.
Thanks
Betty

We might have a match here. My paternal grandfather was named George Newstead, as was one of my uncles. As "George" seems to be a rather common name in the family, I would bet your George Anderson Newstead might be the father of my George (the timeline would be about right, since G.A. Newstead would have been in his late twenties about the time my grandfather was born.

Ironically, my grandfather married a woman named Charlotte...

Rachel

Re: NEWSTEAD

At first unfamiliar with the places you mentioned, I confess I looked them up using the resources of www.genuki.org.uk and www.mapquest.com - and now the locations make sense.

However, even knowing the locations, I still could not find your father in the 1901 census index at Ancestry.co.uk. However, I believe I may have found him in the civil registrations index of the GRO in England (available online by subscription at The Genealogist - www.thegenealogist.co.uk - and other places):

"NEWSTEAD, George Frederick"
Civil Registration District: "Brentford"
[GRO reference:] Vol. "3a" Page "135"
Registered in the 4th Quarter (Oct-Dec) 1899.

I believe this is likely to be your father for three reasons:
1)	Full name match.
2)	Expected date of registration match.
3)	Location match (at least to Brentford that includes Chiswick in the west of London, rather than to Dulwich that is located more in the south or south-west of London).

You do not mention whether you already obtained a copy of your father's birth certificate yet. If not, then this birth certificate should normally give you the names of both of George's parents. Once there are more names to look up in the census returns, we might have better luck in finding George's family, if not George himself.

I am interested in all London-area Newsteads and have been including more of the various London Newsteads on my website: www.tribalpages.com/tribes/newstead

Astrid
I have finally started to understand how to search more effectively in the London area (Middlesex) and in England generally and have started to find ancestors to John William NEWSTEAD who was born in 1887 (in Berkshire).

Grandparents and family:
William James NEWSTEAD, born c1822 in St. Lukes, London, and his wife Jane (born c1822 in Somerstown, London) are listed in the 1881 census for Greater London (Middlesex, England) with four of their children: Jane Sarah (born c1848 in Shoreditch, London), Joseph (born c1856 in Shoreditch, London), John (born c1864 in Hoxton, London: see below), and James (born c1866 in Haggerstone, London).

Their son, John NEWSTEAD (born c1864 in Hoxton, London, Middlesex, England), married Annie Elizabeth WILLIAMS in Whitechapel, London, by December 1886. They had three children: Annie, George, and John William NEWSTEAD who was our ancestor, born in Berkshire in 1887, but brought up in East London.

I am hoping that the next batch of birth and marriage certificates will give more clues about when they came to London and from where.

Let me know if your NEWSTEADs lived in London in the 1800s and if you would like me to look up specific NEWSTEAD names in the 1881 census.

Astrid Terras Newstead
terras@vianet.on.ca
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada
I have printed out a list of all NEWSTEAD names that appear in the 1881 census for the Greater London area of Middlesex, England. I can look up specific names. This census also gives ages and places of birth, etc.

Many NEWSTEADs in Greater London came from the Middlesex area or the neighbouring counties of Kent and Surrey.
Re: your Newstead's in Canada

Dear Rachel,

Our NEWSTEAD couple came to Canada from the area around London, Middlesex, England in the early 20th Century, and if they are related to other Canadian Newsteads, it would be through researching Newsteads in England and probably not Canada.

However, the name is not common, even in England, and I am *especially* interested in the movements, migrations and major events of all Canadian and English Newsteads in particular. I also have contact with other Canadian Newsteads.

Therefore, I found your post very interesting and shall definitely keep a copy in my general and "strays" Newstead file. Very interesting indeed. Thank you for the insight into some Newstead history.

Regards,
Astrid Newstead from Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

*Researching England and Canada: STACEY, NEWBERRY, MASON, BRAUND, VEALE from Devon, BROAD from Cornwall, BURR, WHEATLEY from Kent, NEWSTEAD from Greater London, CAIRNS from England.
george

cannot now recall if we have communicated over your info regarding descendents of elizabeth wyard newstead

i have slightly different info for her and was wondering the source of the date and place which you have, mine may well be wrong

you say you are a descendent of hers but have not explained how, i have attached the direct line from her to me here, if you cannot access the info let me know and i will write it direct into the text of a further e-mail

if we haven't corresponded previouslyand exchanged info about our relative lines, would you be interested in doing so ?

regards

chris shead
I am working on Wyards of Suffolk England. They were in Brundish. I maybe able to help. Brundish was a home which is no longer there. There is a church and there are some Wyard burials there. The warden of the church is taking picture for me but I haven't received them yet.
