Hello

Thanks for your prompt reply. The John Nichol info I gave to you was the son of James Nichol. My ancestor James Nichol was of great interest to me. He was born around 1633 was a Burger (merchant) in Peebles, Peebles Scotland.
He was hanged by King Charles on the 27 Aug 1684 because of his beliefs in the Coventers freedom of speech. (Scots Worthies)I Believe a Lady Piri was the receipient of the Monogramed Silver Plate my Grandmother recd.I do have a complete line of this family in my pocession up to my Grandfather Dr. Frank Edward Nichol Birth 1861 Denmark Hill England

Great to Communicate with you
Elizabeth Liversidge
That is very interesting thanks for posting. I only had family lore stating it was 3 doves on a shield.

My John Nichol left Scotland and moved to Derry then Belfast Northern Ireland. He named his house Nichol Hill both places.

Thomas Nichol is on record in 1740 in the parish Desart in the Barony of Coleraine in the eastern Part of County Londonderry, Ireland. His wife and son John lived in the same house Nichol's Hill.
The family then moved to America. At least two brothers of 7 came to Pennsylvania and came down the Ohio river to settle in the Ohio Territory before it was a state. One settled in Hamilton, Ohio the other stayed north.

Was your John Nichol born in 1682 or died then. Would be interested in your tree back then.

my email is Rnichol01@aol.com

Hello

Regards to enquiries about a Nichol Family Crest, my family was in posession of Silver plate with the Monogram of a Griffin I believe. This creature had a protruding tongue
a beaky head, and massive wings. The Nichol family (mine)
were Scots, Midlothian. 1682 James Nichol was a Merchant from Peebleshire. Hope to hear from anyone shortly

Regards Elizabeth

You may also want to look into the family of Thomas Nichol and Rebecca Paterson. This family was in Moulton Twp., Haldimand in the 1852 Census (www.automatedgenealogy.com) and may have ended up in Bentinck, Grey, Ontario.

Thomas and Rebecca were married in Scotland, their children born in Selkirkshire and they named their first son Walter, second daughter Mary.

Rebecca lists that she was born in Selkirkshire and in looking at the children, it is possible her parents were John Patterson and a Betsy or Elizabeth.

They were still in Scotland at the time of the 1841 (Nicol) for Galashiels, Selkirkshire (www.freecen.org.uk). Thomas lists that he is born outside the census county (Selkirkshire).

Perhaps this is Walter's brother and followed him to the area.

HTH

Hello William………I have looked at my notes with regard to your Nichol family.

This is my theory and certainly is not cast in stone.

Because Walter Nichol was born in Scotland during a time when the Scottish naming pattern was frequently used, I am guessing his father’s name was Walter.

The first son is generally named after the paternal grandfather
The second son after the maternal grandfather
The first daughter after the maternal grandmother
The second daughter after the paternal grandmother
The third’s generally named after the parents.
The fourth’s after the eldest siblings

In the case of your family, we know Sarah’s parents names (William and Mary Ann). Walter and Sarah did name their second son William and their first daughter Mary. In this case, the second daughter is Sarah, named after the mother.

There is a marriage in Oxnam, Roxburghshire of a Walter Nichol to Mary Young 25 Nov 1796 (IGI, extracted). This couple recorded the following children in Oxnam:

Margaret Nicol 13 Nov 1797
Thomas Nicol 25 Jun 1800
Robert Nicol 4 Apr 1802
Christian Nicol 6 Mar 1804
Andrew Nicol 30 Dec 1805
Mary Nichol 8 Sep 1807
Mary Nichol 22 Nov 1808
Walter Nichol 26 Jul 1810 (mother not listed on this record – but this was the only Nichol family in Oxnam recording christenings at this time and I assume that this is your Walter)

Not all records survived, not all were recorded, and not all followed the Scottish naming pattern. Assuming that Walter’s family were recorded and followed the naming pattern, the above family is a perfect fit.

I have visited the Gore Cemetery where some of your Nichol family are buried. If you would like what photographs I have, please do not hesitate to ask. I also have a photo of Andrew Nichol and Isabella Williamson. Andrew and Isabella ended up in the area of Ayr, Waterloo, Ontario.

Happy Hunting!!
thanks for the info I'll go to the cemetery and get the dates funny there was a Francis my grandfather's daughter was named Francis she died very young I have the original land grant for my father's farm the family farm dated 1832 from the province of Upper Canada. Also there is an entire township north of Guelph Ontario called "Nichol" As I've read in other accounts the Nichol's where a stoic bunch maybe stubborn is a better term and my father Roy Nichol never spoke of his family's descendants either I guess scratching out a living farming didn't leave much free time. I'm very interested as likely so is my sister Marsha.
thanks William Wayne Nichol

Francis Nichol farmed in Haldimand Twp. He had a grandson William born 1883 who also farmed there. I have his wife as Lulu Stella Sadler. There is another William Nichol born 1844 in Northumberland and married to Eliza "Liza" Jane Sherwin but he farmed in nearby Alnwick Twp. I am descended from Francis Nichol's son John who is father of William born 1883. I have no information on Jane Lawson, but I do have a lot of William Nichol in Haldimand and Alnwick Twp.s Ontario and also in Killam Alberta where part of this family went.

The Ohio Nichol family is the one I'm connected through. They arrived about 1789 in the U.S. In 1889, the family had a reunion and ancestry was collated from all the people present. This was quite an undertaking and it was published by a genealogy printing company. I have a copy of the book, i.e., copy of a copy that I'd be happy to send as an attachment to those who might be interested. It's a bit confusing, because the printer used his own set up and you have to be careful to keep track of the process as you go. But the information is priceless. Let me know if you'd be interested. Also have ancestry.com files of the my Nichol family, which is part of all this from Scotland to Ireland to U.S. Let me know. I've just been looking and can't find it, but will keep looking. I'll find it.

Mike Mensinger
mmensinger@sbcglobal.net

I'm jumping into a long-discussed topic among knowledgable and passionate people. Laugh if you'd like, but I'd like to share what I know and hope it will help! I've had genealogy in my blood for 16 years- or that's when I found out it had a name!
The MacNeachal Clan Association of America focuses on Highland Nichol's, I've found much of the tradition to be the same.
The falcon facing right, claws brought up to see, with a red background if there's color involved- all framed in a belt of some kind is the standard brooch and emblem.
Scorrybreach (or some spelling) is a word for the last holding of lands they kept after the McLeods married the Nichols out of all their property and title.
(Our clan's noble family came upon a generation when the only heir was a woman; to rule she had to have a mate.
The MaCleods happily swept in an did their duty and swept the land clean of a clan Nichol's presence. Thus the cry 'Scorrybreach' to honor the time when they were the honored noble that lorded their lands well- for themselves and the people.
Supposedly most of the nichols (however you spell) where herded like the cattle they were for the clearances if they hadn't left before. The said cheif of the Skye/ Orkney clan of McNeachals now lives in Australia. We meet once a year- you needn't present a pedigree- it's really time to celebrate the ways of your ancestors.
I imagine ways would be different for Nichols from Skye than of Devon or Cheshire, but that's what makes the festivals fun to me. I talked too long. Blessed be, you don't HAVE to read it!
I just hope I haven't shamed myself too much; I'd like to ask a question sometime...
