We have attempted to use Ancestry.com to solve the riddle. My son and I have suffient information that we will probibly make a visit to Stratford, CT this Summer to check the records. Just now, we are trying to connect with other folks who have Nichols connections in Stratford to open a conversation on this family link.

John T. Nichols

Nichols in Alabama, 1840-1860

I think I am on an impossible task here. I am researching a Wm J Nichols who appears on a 1860 Calhoun County, Alabama census with Amanda Nichols and an unknown Benjamin Nichols.

This is what I know of him so far...

He says hes born around 1834 in 1860 but I suspect he lied about his age or it is just incorrect for some reason. I believe he is the same man who appears as "W J Nichols" and "Wm J Nichols" on an 1840 and 1850 Cherokee County, Al census. That Wm J says he was born around 1819. The Wm J Nichols from the 1850 census is married to a Mary Nichols(Westmoreland), who would have been 13 at the time of their first child. Mary died in 1853 and the kids all show up on a 1860 census in Texas living with grandma. Wm J is not with them in Texas. Instead I find a Wm J Nichols who marries Eve Amanda Griffin in Calhoun County, Al in 1856, who by the way is only 13 years old at that time.
Apparently Wm J was also known as William J Nicholas, It appears that way on an 1850 Alabama state census from Cherokee County, Al. It also appears that way on confederate muster rolls for Eco 19th Alabama Inf Reg. It says Wm J Nichols, alias/other names-William J. Nicholas.
Wm J was captured in 1863 at Missionary Ridge and died on Christmas in 1864 of disease at Rock Island Prison in Illinois. The tombstone says William J Nicholas. In 1866 Eve(Amanda Nichols) is now the head of household living in Calhoun County, Al and lists "1 soldier died of sickness" on the 1866 Alabama census.

Anyways, I could go on and on about William, but my point is I believe that Wm J Nichols, William J Nicholas, and W J Nichols are all going to be the same person. There are several "Nichols" families who show up in Cherokee County, Al in 1840. Archibald, John A., John B., A J, A, T C, and our W J. All of these men on later censuses claim they are all from South Carolina. I am guessing they are all related, so does anyone out there know how my Wm J fits into all of it? He seems old enough to be a brother to some of them yet young enough to also be a son. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
To those of us who have been struggling with Robert Nichols; let me confuse the issue even more. My oldest known ancestor is Robert Nichols, bc 1764. My son and I believe that he MAY have come from a Nichols family in Suffolk Co., LI, NY. What we do know is that the bloody English burned all the public records when they occupied NYC during the Revolution. We also have information on a John Nichols who graduated from Columbia College in the early 1800's.

Unfortunately, he and his immediate family died in 1809 of a small plague.

Should any of you be interested in comparing notes; please contact me at: tbearent@verizon.net.

John T.
I do not believe these were her parents. The dob and age do not match. Arizona would have been my great great grandmother. She had 4 children as follows Nora Edna Carroll(Jelks), William A D Carroll, Pelham McGee and Lamar McGee. Her husband was William H Carroll then Samuel Houston McGee. I have a note out of the wallet of William A D Carroll's wallet that shows W H Carroll. I can't read his dob on the note but sometime in August and the year was written way out to side so I am not sure if it is his or not. It says 1859 which does not make sense if Arizona was born 1848. This is the info I have on her, born 18 Sept 1848, married William H Carroll ?, Nora Edna born 25 feb 1888(age 40), William A D Carroll born 28 Sept 1890(age 42), married to Samuel Houston McGee 30 Dec 1894(age 46), Pelham McGee born 15 Jan 1895(age 46), Lamar McGee born 9 July 1897(age 48) and she died 28 Mar 1899 at the age of 50.

Family moved around for work - usually Texas, Alabama or Oklahoma. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you

I am particularly looking for a Rachel Nichols b c 1822/1823 in OH and possibly married to a Culp. Do you have such person in your database?
Alexandria also reports "Melvin Herbert Christopher Nichols parents are Abraham G. Nichols
(b.
Captain Henry Nichols (obit) d: 1899

Died at His Post.

Pathetic End of Gallant Captain Nichols at Manila.

Manila, June 13 – The funeral of Captain Henry Nichols, the commander of the monitor Monadnock, who died from sunstroke Saturday, took place at Cavite yesterday with naval ceremonies. The officers of the fleet were present and the flags on all the vessels were half-mast.

The sudden death of Captain Nicholas was particularly sad, because it occurred just at the moment when the result for which he had hoped and worked for months was about to be realized, namely, the capture of Paranaque and its occupation by the American forces. The Manadnock has been lying off Paranaque for two months past, under fire from the rebels almost daily. The heat here has been intense, and officers and men of the Monadnock from this trying duty and replace her by another ship, but Captain Nichols preferred to remain, declaring that he did not want to leave his post until Paranaque fell and the coast from there to Cavite was cleared of rebels. The heat on Saturday was most sever and the monitor was engaged all day in shelling the trenches at Paranaque and the rebels fleeing south through Las Pinas, and also watching the American troops closing in upon the towns.

Captain Nichols was overcome by the heat at noon and retired to his cabin, where he received frequent reports of the operations and gave directions for several hours. He became much worse at 3 o’clock and lost consciousness and expired at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Several hours before his death he expressed gratification at the way events were progressing, remarking to an officer: “We have got the rebels there at last.”

Haven Independent
Haven, Reno County, Kansas
June 17, 1899
Page – 3 *** column – 4
I'll look around this weekend. I believe that this map can be purchased from the Woodbury Town Hall. Also, I know where the Cranes are buried. I'll take a picture of their headstone next time I'm over to that side of town (now Bethlehem). You may see reference to the town of Bethlehem (originally Bethlem) when researching the Cranes. Well, Bethlehem was split off from Woodbury at some point so the two towns share a common history. You may already know this depending on where you are.
Best
Gary

WOW! That's quite amazing! I would love a copy of your old map if you could scan it. They married January 23, 1800. You have an historic house! Do you have any old photos of your house? I would appreciate that as well.
THANK YOU,
Karen

Hi there,
I live in the Phineas Crane house in Woodbury, CT. I think the house was built right around the time Phineas and Irene married (179?). The foundation of a sawmill he operated still stands in my backyard. Somewhere in the house I have an old map showing the homes around Woodbury with the names of the owners. I seem to recall the Nichols family on there.
Hope this helps
Gary
