Re: Nightingale family of West Sussex.

I have recently discovered a Nightingale in my family tree. In 1712 Mary Nightingale married Daniel Gumbrel in Billingshurst, Sussex. At that time the home parishes of the bride and groom were not recorded so I don't know where she was living before the marriage but it is likely to have been in Billingshurst or an adjacent parish in the north of West Sussex. Do you have any ideas?
Regards Ken

John Nightingale, 1799-1834, Quincy and Gloucester MA

I am looking for information about the parents of John Nightingale who married Betsey Hodgkins in Gloucester MA on 16 Oct 1826. He died in Quincy MA on 20 Nov 1834 aged 35.

Some compiled genealogies list a John Hall Nightingale, b. ca. 1799, as son of Ruggles Nightingale and Lydia Hall, but I have not found any supporting records.

I have found records that connect Ruggles to two sons: Lemuel (1807-1865) and Robert (1801-1885). Ruggles' 1810 US Census lists 3 sons: two answering the ages of Lemuel and Robert, and an older son of the right age for John.

Many thanks for any help you can give me on this!
Kay Rudolph

Re: Winstanley Nightingale 1783 Liverpool

I am a volunteer keyer in the World Archives project, currently working on ships and crew lists out of Liverpool. Winstanley Nightingale is listed on MANY lists as owner/ship master. Some of these list an address: 9 St Marys Place, Walton, (N?) Liverpool. Most of these documents are from the 1880's, so if this is the same man, he would have been OLD. Perhaps his son?

Ditto for the not doing anything very much. Life seems to have got in the way of late - in a good way.

Maybe after the Christmas/New Year mad rush of socialising I will be able to get back to it. I saw somewhere that Findmypast is planning to add some Hertfordshire records next year, so maybe there will be something there for both Dearmans and Nightingales. I have a membership so will definitely let you know if anything turns up.

Regards,

Rosemary

Ive spent quite few hours looking through online records etc. for Sophia/Thomas/Thomas and any links to my line, but nothing as yet.
Im going to renew my Ancestry account in the new year, which I havent needed for a couple of years, but with more and more parish records coming on-line, I dont seem to be getting anywhere, but confused.
Ive managed to add another 30+ members to the Nightingale tree on another branch, thanks to a new contact, but not much help in this time scale.

I have messaged you a few times and have sent info to you via Janet. I know this sounds daft but you do know that im your cousin and thats why im searching the same people. I recently found their marriage certificate and other intresting finds, so if you look at the tree the info is there, it is the nightingale family tree (obviously). if you want to know any more message me and i can send you my phone number and we can talk. regards, christine.

Further research brings me to decided, if it looks like a duck and quack like a duck, its a duck, the same can be said about this line of Clarke's/Nightingale, everything about it returns to the point where I began, apart from two details, my Grandfather gives his year of birth 2nd.Qtr. 1881, however, the Frederick I believe to be one and the same was born in the same Qtr. but in 1880, secondly his father he states was called John, whereby, Jasper is the name of the 1880. Not two unlikely errors, considering the the lack of knowledge and access to details available to us today. Points of reference to why I believe the two to be the same are as follows-:

1. Only one Frederick Clarke registered at the time
2. Jaspe emplyment is listed as a Cab Driver, this of course being at the time, horse driven cabs, his brother-in-law and Frederick are listed as Stablemen.
3. Jasper could easly be nick named or known as John
4. My grandads employment is listed as Horse Dealer
5. To many other details additional details that made up my mind convince me to accept the linage until such time it may or may not be proven otherwise.

I'm not 100% happy with those early connections, as some of them have been given to me by other researchers and often didn't make sense, but Ive always managed to find something that tentatively connects them to my tree.
I haven't done much research this year, I jump in and out as when other things go quite, but I'm always happy to email you images etc. I keep saying Ill get into the Hertfordshire RO, but it just a little to far, just to pop in.

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt response. As I said in my previous message I don't really know a lot about them and what I have is gleaned from the IGI which, as we know, is often a bit sus. Well that's what they say - personally, when I have checked with actual records, they are usually right. But I digress.

Sophia Anne had a brother John NEWMAN, who was mentioned I think in a previous message. She also had a brother James Henry, but there is no Henry. There is also a Charles (also mentioned?) Her father Thomas's father was Thomas too, married to Elizabeth GREEN. There is one other known child of this marriage - Lovey GREEN NIGHTINGALE. GREEN is also used by their son Thomas for his son Thomas GREEN NIGHTINGALE - another brother of Sophia's.

Dates: Sophia Anne 1803-1828, Thomas 1761-1836, Thomas 1728-1823.

I think I have probably assumed a few things - that the burials I found are for the right people (for example). Interestingly, Sophia Anne's husband's family, the DEARMANS also seem to have come from Hertfordshire - at least her husband's father did. So far I have not got any further back with him. Too many William DEARMANS to know for sure.

The only other thing I could add is that Sophia and James named their firstborn son John NEWMAN Dearman, so NEWMAN is obviously a family name (same name as her brother), but so far I have not found where it comes from.

You have piqued my interest. I will see what else I can find out.

Regards,

Rosemary

Somewhat late I am joining in this thread. My connection is Sophia Anne Nightingale born 1803 in Enfield to Thomas NIGHTINGALE and Susanna (BACON). Actually the connection is Sophia's husband James DEARMAN who is my husband's gt gt grandfather. I say her husband, though I have yet to find the marriage record. Alas she died in 1828 - my guess is in childbirth.

I have a tree going back in time, gleaned mostly from the IGI, but I do know a lot more about the Dearmans of course. I haven't actually looked at the Nightingales much, so would love to expand my knowledge.

Rosemary

I am trying to trace the family of Henry Nightingale born abt 1823 Enfield Middlesex, on his marriage certificate to Sarah Grant in 1846, it states his father is George Nightingale Labourer, but I cannot find any connection to any George or any of his siblings in the area.
I have traced two groups of Nightingale’s into the area, one from Hertfordshire and the other from Essex, but there seems to be gaps between the late 1790's and the early 1820's.
Hi Rosemary, I have come across this name in the past, but I have never followed it up, nor her father Thomas, although I do have some Nightingale records from the area, I could never tie up with anyone, I will have a look later tonight to see if anything stands out.
I have records of these Nightingale's going back to 1686 in Hertfordshire, there is also one who came to Enfield from Newport, Essex, which have links to the Cambridgeshire Nightingales.
As time moves back, this group is moving north through Hertfordshire towards Cambridge too,I'm sure there is a link between the 2 groups.
Please let us know your thoughts...

Linda, Here are the findings from LDS but keep in mind, I specifically searched only for Chorley,Lancashire, England. Hope this helps some way......I ddi not see a BIRTH for the date you gave me on your JOHN NIGHTINGALE--only seen several for a different city in Lancashire so I did not include them. Did you get death copies/certificates on them in the USA? That should reveal more information--plus get the microfilmed obituaries and check for Wills etc at the courthouse there in your locations. Be sure to document from yourself backwards and when you write or acquire copies of births/deaths ---ask for FULL COPIES for genealogy. Did you also get the census on John & Mary Fallis Nightingale?
From Judy

Individual Record FamilySearchâ„¢ International Genealogical Index v4.02
Hi,
You wouldn't by any chance be related to Eileen Nightingale? She married Edwin Walter Frank Courtney and moved from New Zealand to his home in Portsmouth. Edwin was in the Royal Navy. They had three daughters, Colleen, Valerie and Geraldine, and we would like to get in touch with them or their descendents. We are related to them through Eileen. She was related to a Florence.
Any help would be much appreciated!
My name is Andelka Vuletic.

I researched the Nightingale family back from the 1800's to early 1900's, I had hoped they were related to my grandfather, John Clarke through Ruth Alice Clarke, nee Nightingale, however it was not to be, it is a great moving story, anyone searching the Nightingale/Clarke ancestory who lived in Worsley, Little Hulton & Gorton area's of Manchester plus Stoke-on-Trent please feel free to contact me @ baggjn72@ntlworld.com

Lewis R Nightingale b. 1921 Nebraska

Hello,

Can anyone please tell me who Lewis' parents were?

Lewis R. Nightingale was born May 21, 1921 in Nebraska. Died Dec. 10, 1967, in Lincoln, NE. I have his obituary, but it does not list his parents. A sister, Mrs. Guy Stumpy (I think should be Stumphy) is listed as a survivor.

Lewis and his wife, Zona, are buried at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, NE. There are other Nightingales also buried at Wyuka.

I find a Bert & Dora Nightingale with a son, Louis R., and daughter, Dorothy, in the 1930 Census in Nebraska. Is this the same Lewis? He is about the correct age.

I find Bert & Dora Nightingale buried in Cass County, NE:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~necass/zni_ni.htm

The Bert that married Dora I think MAY BE (NOT SURE) is Chauncey Albert Nightingale that married a Dora A. Amick, December 22, 1917; he was age 43; she was age 35. I found the marriage listed on Lancaster County, Nebraska Genweb.

Would really like to know if Bert and Chauncey are the same person.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mary Nightingale was my great-great grandmother on my father's side. She was married to Alexander Struthers. She was born June 15, 1815 in Preston, Lancashire, England. That is all the information I have on when she was born and where. I don't know who her parents were. She came to the U.S. in 1841 and died Dec. 12, 1890 from Paralysis. All of this information was from the Newspaper Obituary. She had a son, William Struthers, and two daughters, but I only have the married names of the daughters. A Mrs. Asaph Buck and Mrs. Kite. I hope this helps you. If there is a connection, please let me know. So I can further my research as well. Thanks again for contacting me. Donna

Thanks for responding. I am searching for the parents of Mary Nightingale. Mary was born in England, I don't know when, but think probably around 1830. She married Alexander Struthers also of England. I don't know much about either one except they were my grandmothers parents. Does this sound familiar? Please respond. Thanks

Hi my name is Annie Wright and my maternal Gt Grandmother was Ann Maria Nightingale (1863-1944) born in Birmingham, England. Her father was Joseph Nightingale (1830-1889) also from Birmingham. His father was Thomas Nightingale from Darlaston in Staffordshire, he was born about 1805. If these are of help to anyone I would love to be in contact with them as I have lots more on Nightingales from Staffordshire, Birmingham and other places in the south and the midlands.
Regards
Annie

Hi I am a UK Nightingale with family from Lancashire, England. We are very distantly related, but I have Edward on the Nightingale tree. He married Elizabeth Oddie in Clitheroe, Lancashire in 1836. His father was The Reverend Benjamin Nightingale, born about 1784, and married to Nancy Gregson in Blackburn on Mar 14 1803. I have more information if you are interested, contact me via Ancestry, or email on mnight50@fsmail.net
I hope to hear from you soon.
Regards Mervyn Nightingale

Hello Andrew, I have been researching my branch of the Nightingale family for about 2 years now with great success thanks to Ancestry and various members of the family. I live in London amd have 3 close Nightingale cousins all abroad unfortunately. My tree starts with Richard N. born around 1700 probably in Essex. He married a Martha Butler on 20 NOvember 1726 in Great Bromley, Essex. I am desperate to find Richard parents but have had no luck. Do these names ring a bell with you?
