Samuel Niles' Journal

Thought it would be good to know. Patricia Niles has located the journal of Rev. Samuel Niles of Braintree, MA. She has also digitalized it and it is in the works to becoming more available. I've started to read through it and find it quite fascinating. What a find!

Re: Clarence & Zelma Niles, Kansas

My interest in this Zelma Niles is the records that she married a L. P. Hanson in 1914. My grandfather's name was Lewis Peter Hanson and lived about 6 miles from Chanute. I have a copy of their marriage license. Everything fits but I just want to be sure.

_________________________________

1. C. W. Niles, Zelma’s husband died around Feb 16, 1913 at Osawatomie, KS. Funeral held at family home, 114 N. Highland, Chanute. Services conducted by Rev. McFadden

2. L. P. Hanson and Zelma Niles married Feb 15, 1914 at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. McFadden; reception at family home at 114 N. Highland, Chanute. They will make their home on the farm of the groom six miles southwest of Chanute. [That could be Vilas]

3. In 1914-1915, Polk Chanute Directory has a Mrs. Zelma Hanson listed living at 510 W. 3rd, Chanute [no L. P. listed]

4. 1915 Census, Lewis P Hanson had sons Richard and Henry P living with him, Colfax Township, Wilson County. Lewis listed as widowed. Lewis was age 59.

5. 1915 Census, Zelma Niles living with J. Charles and Ida M. Smith in Chanute. Zelma is age 57 [birth year 1858].

6. In 1918, Lewis Peter is living at 17 N. Forest, Chanute (info from son Henry’s draft registration card listing nearest relative)

7. 1920 Census for Lewis Peter Hanson, he is living with son Henry and wife at 210 North Steuben, Chanute. Lewis lists as widowed.

8. 1920 Census for Zelma Niles, roomer at 101 S. St., Chanute, age 61, housekeeper, listed as widowed. [that makes her birth year 1859]

9. In 1929, Chanute directory has a Zelma Niles, housekeeper living at 209 S. Lincoln, Chanute.

10. Zelma died around March 2, 1939 in Indianapolis, IN at age 78. [that makes her birth year 1861] From the article Zelma died on February 24, 1939.

____________________________

My conclusion: L. P. could be my grandfather Lewis Peter. He could have married Zelma Feb 16, 1914 but the marriage must have lasted only a few months. The Polk Chanute 1914-1915 Directory probably came out the first half of 1914. Zelma must have separated from L. P. retaining the Hanson name. Lewis considered himself a widower but not from Zelma as she was still alive. In 1920, Zelma considered herself a widow but not from Lewis as he was still alive. So they both must be claiming that from previous marriages.
I don’t know why Lewis was living in Chanute in 1918, maybe earlier. He lived on the farm in 1915 and again in 1920. My Dad married Sept 15, 1915. That left Henry alone on the farm. He married Flora Jones Nov 28, 1918 and then they both lived on the farm. In 1920, Lewis moved back in with them.
Zelma was in Chanute, Neosho Co., KS, on her own, when both 1915 and 1925 Kansas State census takers came 'round. The 1915 enumeration would seem to indicate Clarence Niles had died between 1910 and then.
___________________

1915 Kansas State Census, Chanute City, Neosho Co., KS, p. p. 11A-B, Dwelling #89, Familly #90, as of 1 Mar 1915, in household of J. When marrying to a younger man, women have been known to shave a few years off their age off a few years -- just so officials won't know.

No image available so unknown if this might have actually been just a marriage license application.

George seems to have been born about 1893 according to the 1920 US Census (Cleveland OH. I took a look in the 1900 USC for Georgia but didn't see him with his parents. I did see a George Neils at Randolph, Ga., born Nov 1892, with Wm G & Lizzie Neils. This same George is listed in 1910 at Randolph as George Neal. Possibly he altered his name slightly to Niles by 1920? His son Clarence Wilburn Niles served in WW II and died 1966 in FL (Soc Sec Death Index). His service record might have clues. Also, George's death certificate should give his parents' names. He may have lived near his son in FL and was still married to Marie (Cooper) Niles. Or possibly he died in Ohio before 1930 and she remarried?

I am looking for information on my great grandfather George Niles. I know almost nothing about him. I'm not sure what race he was, I believe he was Mulatto, born in Georgia around 1895. He was married to my great grandmother(Marie Cooper)in about 1912 and according to her(she and my grandfather are both deceased)he died before my grandfather was born in 1914 yet I found out that he was still alive in the 1920 census(the only record I have found for him).

Can someone please help me put together this man and his story.

Does "Brides of the Gold Rush" give any info on Henry 7 himself? What I can find by Googling the book won't let me see the contents. I'm still trying to track his wife's parents--no response from the Schermerhorn list, or the Dutch Colonies list, and the website for the Schermerhorn family doesn't seem to include her. I've realized that since he's the 7th generation, the other book, since it goes only to the 4th generation, wouldn't include him anyway.

Thanks,
Doris

Thanks. It's clear you have done a lot of Niles research yourself. I'm still trying through the Schermerhorn list to trace the parents of Catherine. Then I'll have a way to include this couple in my geneaolgy file. As of now, they just hang out there in space.

I still think I'll try to get a copy of the book thru ILL. You never know what they can turn up. It may even be available in the Seattle Public Library's good genealogy section, if a Niles researcher has donated it.

That book would be "John Niles and Some of His Descendants" by Anne McKee Niles and John Franklin Niles (pub 2004, privately). It is very accurate reference source for the first generations. Gaius 5 and his son David 6, etc., are not covered. I think the book is being offered by one of its authors (John) from his home near Boston. His address may be on-line.

There aren't any other published hardback works that I know of beyond the 4th generation. I have posted material on genforum.com on some lines past the 4th generation and have researched many more. And made postings to clear up misinformation. That was the case with your David 7 who had been confused with another David living in the same state.

David 7 and Henry 7 both descend from John 1 Niles. He is their common ancestor.

"Brides of the Goldrush" (1987) by David Allan Comstock covers some of Henry 7's near cousin's activities in CA. David 7 wouldn't be in that book. Comstock's book and others are available thru the Inter Library system.

A Google search on that book title and/or his name might turn up ways to view or order a book.

I don't know Catherine Shermerhorn (b 1797)parent's names. She illustrated a number of books, one a book on poems which is on-line but I no longer have the web site address.

I gather from your answer that this Henry goes back to the same John 1 as David 7 does? So they are part of the same Niles family. In our earlier conversation about David Niles' family, you referred to a book on this Niles family. I neglected to write down the title and author. Can you give me that citation again, please? Is it available online? Or might I be able to get it thru InterLibrary Loan? From what you say, it does appear that I'm descended from this earlier Henry as well as his wife Catherine. Interesting.

Among my Schermerhorns, and those I can find so far online, I can't find this particular Catherine. I'm sure she's listed in the 1916 Schermerhorn book, as it lists all the children then known, including daughters and their spouses. Unless you know her parents, I'll go to that book to find them. It is online, I believe.

Thanks,
Doris

Re: Henry Niles d 1847 wife Catherine Schermerhorn d. 1870, Albany NY

Henry's line is: Henry 7 (Henry 6, Nathl 5-3, Jos 2, John1)Niles. Henry married Catherine "Katie" Schermerhorn, b 17 Nov 1791; d 28 Mar 1870. Catherine is residing with her daughter Anna May (Niles) Johnson at Coeymans in 1850. I believe Catherine was known for her work illustrating books. Henry's brother John was an Albany County judge and lived at Renselaerville, NY, where his home is now on the historic tour. John's son Addison went to CA where he was a newspaper editor, lawyer, and Associate Justice of the CA Supreme Court. His cousin Niles Searls was its Chief Justice at a different time. The town of Niles (now in Freemont)is named for Addison and is where the first movies were made. The Niles Train Depot is named for his work in bringing the train to CA. They have a newly restored Law Library at Nevada CA. Other Niles of this branch were farmers, attorneys, and members of parliament in Ontario, Canada. Some of their adventures travelling overland to CA and events afterwards in CA are described in books by David Comstock in letters by Mary (Niles) Searls written home to Renselaerville. This line (Nathl 3) settled first in RI before going to NY.

Henry Niles d 1847 wife Catherine Schermerhorn d. 1870, Albany NY

Checking on this Henry Niles, b. abt. 1787, d. 20 Feb. 1847, buried with his wife in the St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic (Coeyemans) Church at Albany, NY. I want to know if he is part of the family of David 7, David 6, Gaius 5, Nathaniel 4, John 3-1 Niles. David 6 had a son named Henry, who married Sarah Waggoner in Moultrie Co. IL in 1884. Sarah was the daughter of my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner and John Thomas Waggoner. After John Thomas Waggoner died, Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner married David 7 Niles, which is undoubtedly how her daughter Sarah met her step-cousin Henry. That’s part of why I’m wondering if the younger Henry is the namesake of the Henry Niles who was buried in Albany.

The other reason is that the earlier Henry Niles was married to a Catherine Schermerhorn, whose name is also on the same gravestone. Her dates, shown on the stone, are b. abt. 1792, d. March 8, 1870. My ggg grandmother was Neeltje Schermerhorn, 1783- after 1821. All the early Schermerhorns were related to each other, though I’m not quite sure where this Catherine Schermerhorn fits into my family tree. But at least I do know that she’s related to me somehow. So the descendants of the Henry Niles on the tombstone are related to me as well.

So that makes me really interested to know if the Henry Niles on the gravestone is descended from one of the Niles in the list above. They go back far enough that Gaius served in the Rev. War, leaving plenty of collateral lines for there to be a Henry who is related, who lived in NY. If so, then if they left descendants, I’m a Niles by blood.

And if that is the case, Sarah Waggoner married not just a step-cousin, but a distant relative as well—if my logic holds. This is part of what makes genealogy so interesting.

Everything I know about this line, except for David 6 on down, comes from Allen Niles, on this message board, and census data he pointed me to.

Thanks,
Doris
David 7's other brother was Henry,b c1821, and he had two sisters Sarah & Mary. I haven't tried to trace David & Eliz's children in the census. Their names do appear in Indexes: Newton for "Newt" and "Oddie." His daughter that you have as "Cenia" is Benia I think. David's brother Gaius 7 is at Okaw, Shelby, IL in the 1870 & 1880 USCs with wife Malinda and children David E., Jane, Leander, and Martha. My descent from John 1 Niles(1603-1694)of Braintree MA is from John's son Increase 2. David 7 descends from John's son Nathl 2 & wife Sarah(Sands)Niles of MA, Block Is, RI, and So. Kingstown, RI.

How pleased I am to get a response, and such an informative one, at that, It helps a lot to clarify the background of the David Niles who married Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner.

It sounds like David 7 had at least 4 brothers and a sister--John 7, the father of Henry 8, Gaius 7, William 7, and Harrison 7, plus Mary 7. Did I catch that properly, from the 1850 census? And were there other siblings as well?

BTW, Sarah Waggoner who married Henry Niles was David Niles' stepdaughter, not his daughter. She was the daughter of Elizabeth and her first husband, John Thomas Waggoner.

The Jos. Waggoner who was a boarder in the home of Sarah, William, and Mary Niles in 1880 in E. Nelson, is probably John Thomas and Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner's son named Joseph, b. 1858. By 1880 he would be out on his own. It's interesting that it says "boarder" rather than "farm hand" but he may have had another sort of job. I have his wife's name, Hannah Patterson, but not a date of marriage. It would make sense that he would be boarding with his stepfather's brother prior to that. This group of Niles families sounded like they stuck together and looked out for one another.

How about descendants of David and Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner Niles? Do you descend from them? By which son? Do you know about other lines of David and Elizabeth's children?

I've had Ancestry mess up names too. In another family of 7, only one was correct! One was unclear on the original, but the rest should have been decipherable.

Thank you so much.
Doris

Re: David Niles, Moultrie Co. IL b. c. 1841 d. after 1900

David's line is:

David 7 (David 6, Gaius 5, Nathaniel 4, John 3-1) Niles. His parents were: David [6] and Sarah (Humphrey) Niles. They married c1827 at Galia Co., Ohio. David [6] was at Shelby Co, IL in 1840, 1850, and 1860. He is on the tax list there in 1866 with son David,Jr. David, Sr., may have died before 1870.

David 7's brother John [7] had a son Henry (b c1866) who may have been the one who married Sarah Wagonner, dau of David 7 Niles & his wife Elizabeth Rutherford Wagonner.

Gaius 5 was a Rev War soldier born in CT who served from NH. He was at Rensselaerville NY in 1800 ("Geyus"). His pension aplication mentions his son David age 12 when he filed in 1821.

The 1860 USC for Shelby lists David 6 as David Nills. David 6's wife Sarah Humphey (a widow) is living with a son Wm and dau Mary in 1880 at E. Nelson, Moultrie, IL. There is a Jos Waggoner boarding with them.

Some of the dates for their births are off from census-to-census but their names match.

The 1850 USC is difficult to read. The son transcribed as "Laine" by ancestry.com is actually Gaius, age 18. He appears in later USCs in IL with his son Leander. And "Hanson" in 1850 is actually Harrison, age 15.

David Niles, Moultrie Co. IL b. c. 1841 d. after 1900

I'm looking for the family of David Niles, b. in IL, according to the 1880 census, parents b. in OH. I can't trace his parents beyond that because I don't know their names. It's too common a name for me to trace back any further, even with a birth year. I know nothing else of his life until he intersects with my family. After 1880, he was a farmer.

This David Niles married my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner, 18 Sept., 1872, in Moultrie Co. IL. They apparently lived in Whitley Twp, Moultrie Co, IL the rest of their lives, according to the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses, and a picture postcard postmarked there in 1909. She died in 1922. I can't find the 1920 census for either of them, and I have no date of death for David Niles.

She was b. in KY in 1838, but had been in IL long enough to have married her first husband, John Thomas Waggoner, b. 4 May 1839, in Moultrie Co., 2 Jun. 1857. They had five chidlren between 1859 and 1869; he died 6 Jan 1870.

David Niles and Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner Niles went on to have seven children of their own, according to the 1900 census. This made 12 children for Elizabeth, all of whom were still living then, though the Waggoner children were all out on their own by then.

These are the children of David and Elizabeth Niles.

Rosetta, b. c. 1874
Elzada, b. c. 1878
Melissa, b. May 1880
Nisy or Nesy (female), b. Feb. 1881
Oddie (male), b. Dec. 1882
Newt, b. Apr. 1885
Cenia (female), b. Jan 1889

Since these children are half-cousins of mine, I would love to find their descendants. While I've learned there are a lot of Niles families around, many of these first names are uncommon enough that I am hoping to find at least one descendant. And I'm hoping to learn through them who David Niles' parents were.

(Sarah, the only girl among Elizabeth's Waggoner children, was living next door to David and Elizabeth in the 1900 census, and also in the 1910 census, still single. She later married, at a date unknown to me, a Henry Niles. I'd be willing to bet this was a relative of David's. Sarah Waggoner Niles, b. 1860, died 21 Dec. 1941, in Whitley Twp, Moultrie Co. I don't have a death date for Henry.

They had at least four children. The first one, Nancy, married a man named Stevens, lived in Macon Co. IL, which adjoins Moultrie Co. Nancy Niles Stevens died in 1908 and I have no children listed for her; doesn't mean she had none. Sarah and Henry's second child, a son whose first name I don't have, married a woman named Osborn--I don't have children for them either. I know nothing about their third child, not even gender. The fourth child, a daughter, married a man whose last name was Rose. Maybe some of this information, none of it sourced, will help sort out David Niles as well.)

Thanks,
Doris

JOnes.
She resided in 1880 in Stonington,Ct, at age 63

She is listed in the Report on Narragansett Indians 1881 as well in the New York Indian Claim 1901
