Mary Nock, of KY, 1884 signature

Attached is a page from an autograph book signed by Mary E. Nock in 1884. This book belonged to a young student named Minnie Isaacs and all her friends at Bellewood Female Seminary in Anchorage, Jefferson Co, KY signed it, and put their hometowns too. Mary Nock listed her hometown as Pewee Valley, KY. She can be found on the 1880 census of Oldham Co. KY and her father, a widower, was Samuel Nock, born in KY. His father born in Nova Scotia. I hope this helps someone.

Hello,
I think I may have document that my father bought at an auction a few years ago that may help take you search back a bit further. In a box of nick backs, he found a document that is a land grant from the territory of New Mexico for 160 acres of land in Roswell for Felix Nock. The auction would have been in the Dayton Ohio area. It is dated in 1903 and certified with a stamp from the territory of New Mexico. On the outside of the document, apparently the land was paid off in 1912. My father passed away in 2008, and I have the document. It is actually in very good condition, and is approved for sale by Theodore Roosevelt and seems to have been filled out by the Land Grant Office. It is currently in storage, as I live in Centerville, Ohio let me know of an email address and I will scan it and send you a copy with pleasure. I hope this helps your search efforts!
Sincerely,
Robert Drought
Robdrought@yahoo.com

I see you left a message some time ago asking about Barnsley Nock.

My great grandfather was a Barnsley and it took me ages to track the family down on the census forms as they changed their name periodically or used different parts of the name - Barnsley, Barnsley Nock, and mostly Nock in the 19th century. We had no idea of the Nock part of the name. My great granfather was born Samuel Barnsley Nock but died as Samuel Barnsley and his children took this name. The family is from Quarry Bank in the Black Country.

Regards,

Erica

Looking for information about a 'Nock's W.House' 1841 census... This could be Warehouse or Workhouse.
The first names listed at this address are James Nock & Hannah Nock. James is described as IND (of independent means). Does this mean he and Hannah owned the place ?.. There are other Nock's within the address too. I know that James died sometime before the 1851 census because Hannah is down as a Widow (83 years old). She has a Mary Purton residing with her described as 'daughter-in-law'- Proprietor of Houses. Hannah's maiden name was Purton; could the description of Mary be a mistake ?
If anyone has any information It would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Simon Paul Nock

Thomas & Abigail Nock family/Mary (Nock) Wentworth

While researching Mary Nock, wife of Thomas Wentworth, I ran into the following puzzle. The 2-volume Wentworth family history by John Wentworth, mayor of Chicago, suggests that Thomas Wentworth's wife Mary Nock was a sister of Rebecca Nock (who married Thomas Wentworth's brother Richard); a third sister, Love, died single. Rebecca is said to be daughter to Thomas Nock of Dover, NH, who died in 1666, but the generations don't work: Mary and Rebecca must have been born after this Thomas' death. (see v.1 p.208)

Another Thomas Nock living in the Dover area has daughters named Rebecca, Mary, and Love, however. He was married to Abigail Brickett, and his children were as follows:
- Hannah (b. 8/9/1714)
- Nathaniel (twin b. 1/26/1717)
- Mary (twin b. 1/26/1717)
- James (b. 8/1/1720)
[All four were baptized together 7/1/1722]
- Mercy (b. 4/4/1723, bapt. 8/4/1723)
- Love (bapt. 10/23/1726)

This information comes from "Collections of the Dover, N.H., Historical Society" here on ancestry.com and from the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire".

Here's my question:
Does anyone know if the Thomas Nock married to Abigail Brickett was a son of the Thomas Nock who died in 1666? The latter apparently had a son named Thomas, but the author of the Wentworth history believed that this son died without issue.

Hello Again!

From checking out the census, 1861, Dudley Worcestershire,
Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England
Samuel Nock, 69 years old, A Retired Bank Officer, Married
Anne Marie, Wife 49 years old
Lydia Mary, Daug. 17 years old
Samuel A. , Son, 12 years old
Anne M. Daug, 10 years old
Louisia, Daug. Age uncertain
Sarah Anne Harrison, 14 years old Dom. Servant

Then 1871 Census, same area and residence:
Samuel Nock, 80 years old, Retired Bank Officer, Married
Elizabeth Wife, 67 years old
Lydia M. Daug. 27 years old and unmarried

It looks to me he remarried in between Census, this the only
information I have, right now. The only thing I could suggest
is to check out birth or church records in Dudley where Samuel
was Born.

Neila

Its fascinating research i must admit and very popular at the moment !.. On my mothers line (Wootton) I have found over 110 family members going all the way back to the mid 18th century - exciting stuff ! I hope to do the same with my fathers line. I too will delve deeper this coming holiday and sit down with my gran to find out a bit more about her 1st husband ! as I mentioned in my 1st message he died young a couple of days before my dad was born so my nans memories of him and his family are somewhat faded. Unfortunately my father never really kept in touch with his aunts, uncles & cousins etc.. I know they are in the West Midlands somewhere but we have lost contact. It will be interesting if our line is connected in some way ! i'm sure my dad will be quite intreagued... The only item I have of my Grandad is a wedding photo from just before the war so i'm very interested in finding out more about him and his family !.. as soon as I get my certificates and a link is established between our lines then I will send a scanned copy to you if you are interested. Will also keep you updated of any fresh information i obtain....

Hope to hear from you soon

Regards
Simon
No simon, i haven't got much further back with the nocks yet. You are right, our line seems to flit from the midlands to the north and back. Always working in the coal mining industry. My grandmother for instance (james' daughter) was born near warrington, i think the family spent aprox 5 years up there before they came back to west brom. I will delve deeper during the easter holidays to see if i can come up with something. Other useful sites are www.freebmd.org.uk and www.1837online.com, and also the family search on the church of latterday saints website (you don't have to be any religion or a latter day saint to search this fantastic site ! - although the nocks aren't greatly researched on here you might find it useful for another line in your family) I am hoping that our line connects, i have found many distant relatives for my other lines, but you'd be my first nock and it's great to have someone elses input. angie xx

Hello again,
Yeah thats the line i'm guessing are my family !.. I recently spent a day looking into that line and got quite far back ! I believe some of the Nock family moved to Yorkshire... I was quite astonished about just how many Nocks there are in the West Midlands, especially around West Brom. As mentioned before I will endeavour to obtain the certificates and hopefully confirm this link to this line as a certainty.

Have you manged to get quite far back then Angela ? apart from Ancestry.co.uk do you use any other research engines ?

Good luck to you too - if this line is correct then I will be more than happy to share any information I get with you !

Regards
Simon
Hello Angela,
Have you any details of Josephs marriage ? or any detail post 1901 ? I have yet to delve into my fathers side of the family so details are rathers sketchy ! As a cild I remember my Great Grandmother, her name being Minnie... She would have married around 1910.... My grandmother who is 86 mentioned that she thought that her 1st husbands father (Joseph) was a twin. As far as i'm aware there are two potential Joseph Nock lines for around 1889/90 one of which would most probably be my great Grandfather. I'm going to have to obtain some birth certificates starting with my grandfather (Joseph) and then a marriage and birth certificate for my great grandfather (Joseph) to be certain of the correct line.
If you have any more detail they would be greatfully received.

Regards
Simon Paul Nock
