Thanks, I have seen the IGI information. I think Marie Noel Marquand had 8 children (rather than 9 as in the IGI). I've found the 1841 and 1851 census for this family.

Noel born about 1825 does not appear in 1841 census presumed to have died young
Mary born about 1828 appeared in both the 1841 and 1851 census
Jane born about 1830 appeared in both the 1841 and 1851 census, died in 1880 in Victoria Australia unmarried
Eliza born about 1835 appeared in the 1841 but not the 1851 census presumed to have died young
Rosa born about 1838 appeared in the 1841 but not the 1851 census presumed to have died young
Frances born about 1840 appeared in both the 1841 and 1851 census, died in 1880 in Victoria Australia unmarried
Louise born in 1841 appeared in both the 1841 and 1851 census, married Jean B. J. Loridan, died in 1908 in Queensland Australia (my ancestor)
Julia born about 1843 appeared in the 1851 census, married Edward DeLacy Evans in Australia in 1868 (interesting case turns out Edward was a woman!), she died in 1913 in Victoria, Australia

In 1859 Marie Noel Marquand and four daughters (Jane, Frances, Louise & Julia) immagrated to Australia aboard the Scottish Chief. Her husband George Marquand had died four years prior, in 1855.

I've had trouble tracing Marie's ancestors. The Jersey Heritage Trust has some real estate transactions that indicate that Marie's father's name was David. There is also an earlier one that shows David son of David. So I think that both her father and grandfather were named David Noel. I'd love to know more about these Noels.

I'd like to find out too how the Noels of England, the family of the Earl of Gainsborough, branched off to an American family of Noels in Virginia and then Maryland. That is what I understand happened, and is sighted in a book that titled "Men of Mark in Maryland" about Edgar M. Noel (my great grandfather)
I am interested to hear from any of you who know this 1955 article by Addie Noel Bolinger. Not only did she track the Virginia Noels back to the Earl of Gainsborough (1680), not to the Dutch Noels, but she also provides no records or documentation, or citations for her genealogy (barring one quote from a James Noel, Sr. will, Tappahannock Co, VA 1791). ONE of my questions is that she jumps to my ancestor James Alexander Noel with no documentation and seems to know a lot about him. HOW? My unsupported guess is that it might be family lore. I need help separating fact from fiction here. Really need help from any of you Noel family researchers out there!

Hi all, I may have solved this mystery myself, but if this is in any way wrong, I hope somebody will let me know:

I show Luisa, Lucinda, and Sarah Joanna Noel as sisters. Luisa Noel married John T. Case. Lucinda Noel married John H. Mewherter. The 2 children of these marriages, Theodore Case and Minnie May Mewherter, married and produced my grandfather, William Albert Case.

This means that my grandfather's 2 grandmothers were sisters and that Theodore and Minnie were cousins. I don't think this was unheard of in those days.

As far as Sarah Joanna Noel, I show her marrying Henry Case, who may or may not have been John T. Case's father or perhaps an uncle.

If anybody out there has information on the above, please please let me know. Thank you, Nancy (Case) Wolff

The Noel Girls of Pennsylvania

I hope somebody can help me. It seems like the Noel girls (Sarah Joanna, Lucinda Eleanor, and Aloysia (Luisa) C.) married into my family in the mid-1800s. Sarah Joanna married Henry Case, Lucinda Eleanor married John H. Mewherter, and Luisa married John Case, my direct ancestor. However, when I search their names, I find 2 different versions both living in Derry Pennsylvania in 1850.

In the 1850 census, there is a Lucinda Noel, age 8, living with Adam and Mary Beamer. There is also a Lucinda A. Noel, age 8, living with John and Barbara Friend.

Then there is Cecelia Noel (another sister I believe), age 13, living with John and Luisa Case and a Cicely Noel, age 13, living with Nancy Kimmel.

Susan Noel (another sister), also age 13, is also living with John and Barbara Friend.

Luisa C. Noel, age 20, is living with John and Barbara Friend, and Luisa Case (nee Noel, I am pretty sure), age 20, with John Case and their 2 children.

Then Sarah J is living with her husband, Henry Case. She is 18 and he is 50.

I am not sure how many of these people are the same person listed twice in the census or are 2 different people. I sure hope somebody can help me as I am descended from the Cases and the Mewherters, and I would really like to clean this up if possible.

Thanks to anybody who can help.

Nancy (Case) Wolff

Horace was the son of Benjamin and Sarah (possibly Bridges) Noel. His siblings were Lucy, Dudley, Nancy, Burrell, Joel, and Willis. Benjamin's will was signed 7 Apr 1822 and probated during the August term 1822.

For a number of years Benjamin was believed to be the son of Thomas and Drucilla. The Noel DNA Project says this isn't so--one marker match out of 12. I have no idea who Benjamin's parents were, but I have made some headway with his descendants. I'm happy to share if you're interested.

Elizabeth Cahail Townsend was my ggg grandmother. She was born c. 1836 in Scioto County, Ohio. She married David Townsend on August 5, 1852 in Henry County, Iowa. Their oldest daughter, Sarah Catherine Townsend, was my gg grandmother.

In the 1860 census, David and Elizabeth Townsend were living in Jefferson Township, Henry, Iowa. Right next door to them lived the family of James Cahail (I believe it was spelled Cahal on the census). He was listed as 39 years old, a wagon maker, born in Ohio. Could James Cahail be yet another child of Edward Cahail and Sophia Noel? One of James Cahail's daughters was named Sophia (she was 13 years old that census year).

Yes, I believe that it was Elizabeth Cahail Townsend that was living with Jacob Leonard Cahail in 1870. Apparently, David and Elizabeth Townsend had separated after David's service in the Civil War. In later years, she did go back to using Townsend as a surname.

I am the 5th great grandson of Edward and Sophia CAHAIL. I had theorized that they had a daughter Elizabeth, born perhaps about 1836. Do you know when she married David TOWNSEND? Is she one and the same as the Elizabeth CAHILL (spelled incorrectly) living with what would be her brother Jacob Leonard CAHAIL in Marion Township, Washington County, Iowa in 1870?

Re: Noel's from the Arnaudville, Louisiana area

My gggrandmother was Marie Therese Noel, who was the second wife of Jean George Faul/Fall. They were married in 1842, and lived in Grand Coteau, LA. I believe she was born around 1820. They had a large family. I have never been able to find her parents or background. Their daughter, Marie Louise married Edgar Savoie from St. Landry Parish, near Sunset, LA. Marie Louise spoke only English at the time of their marriage, which was unusual at that time, so I believe that Marie Therese and George must also have spoken English rather than French, as was usual in that area. My only clue about her hometown from older family members is that she was from the Arnaudville area. Could she be from your family?

Thank you for the information. That is the most I have ever received on this family. Please keep me advised of any other information you come across or may have. My NOEL line is lacking from my great grandfather on back. I am not sure how, or if, Marie Eulalie is definately related to me, but I feel that she is.

Very interesting! Dudley and Lucretia were my g-g-g-grandparents. The 1850 census lists the youngest daughter with initials E and what I thought was L. Apparently it was an S. Now I have a name to put to the initials.

For a number of years it has been accepted that the line went Dudley > Benjamin > Thomas > and on back to the immigrant Cornelius. There is an extensive Noel DNA project that says that proven descendants of Cornelius and proven descendants of Benjamin have one marker match out of 12--we're not kin to Cornelius. The Noel DNA project has a website.

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out who Benjamin was and where he came from--easier said than done. The names Joel and Willis crop up often so am trying that route, too.

Do you know where the Herrens came from? Lucretia said in 1850 that she was born in North Carolina. I have a fair amount of stuff on Serena's siblings, and I'm happy to share. Feel free to contact me directly at cbunte@rockymtncable.com
