I think we share the same Great grand parents - John and Elizabeth Jermain.
I am Stephen Judd and my mother was Jessie Agnes Goreing, the last of 21 children born to Mary Ann Jermain and William S Goreing. Some of the Goreings, like us, have settled in South Australia and I am starting to put together their family connections. It looks as if you are descended from Sarah Ann Jermain, who was Mary Ann's older sister. Are you interested in swapping notes?

Hi, I have found out more about John Westley Northam. Have his Military info. My Great Grandpa "Jay" James Lindsey went with his mother, when she was trying to receive his military pay. It was interesting to find out some info on him. I had know idea. Me and my sister drove down to Miller MO to cemetery to pay respects. We had driven down to Girard, where my Great Grandma Northams parents were buried and drove over to his. It was interesting. Please let me know any info you may have. I have talked to Audrey Horn But not recently.

I have John Northam b. 1802 in N.C. d. 1898 m. Nancy, John' father was married to McClisk not first name.

I only have web site sources for my information, so it may have errors. The same names were common in other families. I can give you the site sources for the following, if you want them.

Millie was the daughter of Sherod Northam. [He had MANY different first names.] Millie is his daughter by a first marriage.

Mary Ann "Millie" Northam
b. May 6, 1857 to Sherod/Shereid "Sam B." Northam & Elizabeth(?)
d. December 24, 1934 (buried Barnesville, Marion County, AL)

married Robert Emmanuel Fikes on July 17, 1876

Robert Emmanuel Fikes
b. March 22, 1854
d. April 4, 1928 (buried Barnesville Cemetery, Marion County, AL)

Robert Emanuel and Millie are on the 1900 Marion Co., AL Census, p. 153A, family 128.
With them are children: Mary I.-21; Lewis R.-18; William A.-16; Robert L.-11; Lon/Tom?-9; Goodlow-6; Dee-3.
1900 Census shows 8 children born and 8 children living.

The William A.-16 is suppose to be William Andrew [Fikes] who
married his 3rd cousin(?) Cora Elizabeth Northam.

Cora Elizabeth was the daughter of John W. Northam,
who was the son of Eli L. and Louisa J.[Pryor] Northam.

Sherrod married 2nd: Elizabeth [Roberts?]Williams,who also had a daughter by a previous marriage. That daughter is shown as Mary E. Williams on 1860 Census and Martha on 1870 Census. She disappears after that.

I thought I was related to the Andrew you mention. Certain things matched, but it turns out that I am related to a different Andrew Jacob Northam. I do have some info on the line you asked about though. Here are the basics:

I'm hoping you know something about my ancestor. His name is William B. Northam from Bounds Crossorads Itawamba Co., MS, not far from Tupelo. He was born 06/06/1862 and died in 1902 in Itawamba co. He was married to Martha Ann Holley and had two children, Lela and Curtis (my grandfather).

I cannot determine who his parents were. I believe he was part of the John Northam clan who moved from NC to Fayette Co, AL in 1840s.

I was told that many of his family members migrated to Texas in early 1900s.

He taught at the Oakland Normal Institute, a college, in Itawamba County in late 1880s-90s.

TIA for any clues.

My ancester was born in Itawamba Co., Miss, right near Marion Co., AL were some their people ended up before movign on to Texas.

Searching for the proof that Sarah Northam was daughter of Samuel Northam and his wife, Mary Dickinson. Samuel's son, Jonathan, was court appointed guardian of Sarah and John Hopson's children, Mary and John, in 1714 at Colchester.(A Digest of the Early CT Probate Records,
1700-1729,Compiled by Charles William Manwaring, Hartford District, V. II:233.

Samuel Northam died 12 Nov 1726, but no will found.
Sarah (Northam) Hopson died 16 Mar 1708 at Colchester.

Jonathan Northam died 1 May 1761 at Colchester and buried at Ancient Burial Ground.

"James Northam, immigrant ancestor, was born in England. He settled in Connecticut, as early as 1640 (Connecticut Rec. i., p. 45), and at Wethersfield, in September, 1644 (ibid L, p. 110). Other references to him occur under dates of 1648-55-58. He was admitted a freeman in 1658. He was one of the seceders who agreed to leave Connecticut and locate at Hadley, Massachusetts, but he died before 1662."

So he may have been born in England, and was probably married before, and his son may also be of that previous marriage. I got these references off the internet so I have no documentation, but maybe it's a starting point for you. Good luck!

George Northam of North Carolina

I have hit a brick wall with George Northam (b. 1764 c. -- d. 1820 c.) of North Carolina.

He was married to a Sarah Powell (b. 1766 c.) and was father of John M. Northam (b. 1802, d. 1898).

Does anyone have any information on the North Carolina Northams? They later moved to Alabama.

I have a Frank Northam b. ca. 1873, the son of John W. Northam and Kissah Emily Spence. I don't have any more information on him so I don't know if he is your Edward Frank Northam. Did you find any marriage information on him that maybe listed his parents.

I have done considerable research on the Birchard family, and have connected the "unconnected" Canadian branch to the first Thomas Birchard who emigrated from Essex, England, to Massachusetts. Emma Melissa was the daughter of Harvey Birchard, my great-grandmother's, Martha, brother. You are descended from one of three brothers who left Vermont, became Quakers, and moved on to Ontario and founded Birchardtown. I have been there and have lots of pictures. I have quite a lot about Harvey and his father, Samuel. I have self-published a book showing all of this, including copies of two original poems I own, written in the late 1700's, by Harvey's grandmother, Jerusha Butler Birchard. All of this consists of pages and pages--far too much to retype. The book was reviewed by the Connecticut Genealogical Society in their publication, The Nutmegger. There are now copies all over the country--I just sent one to a Genealogical Library in Wisconsin.

I have not followed Emma's children forward, but do have 4 of them listed. You can most likely fill in the missing data for the children. There are pages in the book in which you can record your own family line.

If I can be of more help, please let me know. Nice to meet a newly discovered cousin.

I am a Francis PR Northam, so was my dad F David 1934, his dad F Ralph 1886, his dad F Philip John Holt Northam~1860. They hail from Newton Abbott, Totnes, Yeovil areas. My dad said the name Northam was a combination of Northman & a hamlet or 'ham' so literally it could have meant man form a hamlet in the north.

My Thomas Northam was b. 1776 in Accomack Co. VA. and in 1850 census he is in Guilford Co. with wife Elizabeth. But we think she was his second wife. Did you ever receive any information about your Thomas and his marriage to Hannah Swigget? Do you know descendants of your Thomas?

I am seeking info on the Elliott's, and based on my searching so far.
Mabry Northam and Martha J Wiginton married 1-10-1892 in Marion Co, Ala
They then went to Texas
They had daughters Gertie, Isla, Mary, Minnie, Nettie and ?Ellie, and sons Henry and Charlie

Isla married Raymond A Elliott 1915 Bell Co, Texas and had known as of today sons Cecil, Deward, Wallace.

Raymond's parents were Thomas A Elliott and Bell (Floyd) Elliott, Raymond's half brother, Thomas Scott Elliott was my husband's Great Great Grandfather. I can share what I have on the Elliott's if anyone is interested, does anyone have any info on Raymond and Isla?

My ancestor James Northam came to Australia from Devon in 1857 with his wife Eliza and 3 children - Charlotte b.Cheriton about 1850, Elizabeth Jane b.Tavistock about 1854 and William Henry b.Tavistock about 1855. I have only just begun researching the family and am wondering if they could be connected to your Exeter group as these towns are in close proximity in Devon UK. I have seen an Eli Northam on 1850 census of Guildford Co. NC, but he is much younger. I think his father may have been a George Northam and may have come from Accomack Co. VA as there is a Thomas Northam on same census age 74 b. in Accomack. Trying to locate researchers who know about Thomas.

The earliest Northam we are researching is Thomas shown in the 1850 Guilford Co. NC census as b. in Accomack Co. VA ca. 1776. I have his will which names sons George, John and Henry. Henry is our line. We are pretty sure these are the right family becaus Henry's daughters were legatees of Absalee Northam shown on the census with Thomas and also named in his will. Henry went to Illinois mid 1850's. I think John is ancestor of Mary Lou House of Texas. Have you been in touch with her?
Anyway. Can you figure out if this Thomas is son of the George you mentioned? Same George that is Sharon Gregg's ancestor? She sent me a message today also.
The Eli and Thomas I see on 1850 Guilford census look like siblings, possible children of the George shown living near Thomas. That George m. Harriet Winters (2). The John and Henry living next door to each other I believe are the children of Thomas b. 1776.
Would really be grateful if you could help me sort my Northams out. There seem to be so many in NC and VA.
