Re: John Northey c1829 cornwall died in Parr St Helens Lancshire

Hi,

I have an interest in NORTHEYs from the Chacewater, Cornwall area which is where your John lived in 1841 with his mother, Mary, and siblings, William, Peter, Mary and James.

John had a brother, Peter, who was christened in 1825 in Kenwyn. There is a Peter NORTHEY of the appropriate age who emigrated to Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA. As Peter is a less common NORTHEY name, I think it is likely that he is a distant relative of yours. I was not able to find his death certificate in the online Michigan databases to confirm that his parents are in fact William NORTHEY and Mary GROSE but this is a good possibility for you.

Again looking at another Peter NORTHEY in Michigan, USA. There is one who died in 1881 in Dickinson County, Michigan who was born in 1856 in England and whose parents on the death certificate are listed as James and Elizabeth.

This James I believe would be another brother to your John who married Eliza. In the 1861 Cornish census, this James and Elizabeth with 5 year old child, Peter James NORTHEY, are living in St. Cleer next to Mary MITCHELL from Kenwyn, She is nee NORTHEY and was married to Joseph MITCHELL on the same day in St. Cleer as your John NORTHEY and Eliza GILL.

There are many NORTHEYs from the Chacewater area who ended up in the US so even if the above would not turn out to be your relatives, you'd surely have some distant relatives in the US. As the great majority of these NORTHEYs were miners, they move to many different areas of the world.

I wondered if you knew why in the 1871 census your John's birthplace is listed as "Born On The Seas Overseas Brit. Subj., Described as British Subject" Any family tale to explain that?

Best wishes,
Karen

He is much pleased by what he has seen of Salt Lake, and may be induced to visit some of the camps before departing for the East.

Note: According to his online Michigan death certificate Harry NORTHEY was born in 1842 in Callington, Cornwall, England and died in 1915.

Source: Aspen Daily Times, Aspen, Colorado, Wednesday, January 1, 1896, page 2 at Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection

A PRETTY TOUGH COUNTRY.

Mutton and Spuds the Diet in South Africa.

John R. Bordeaux of Butte, Mont., has received a letter from Thomas Northey, formerly of Butte, but now of South Africa, under date of Germistown, in which Mr. Northey says:
"This is a pretty nice country, and a pretty tough one as well; nice one to look at when the grass is green, but at present there is almost a famine for want of water; and the dust blows at times that you can't see anything. Vegetables are scarce; nothing but spuds at present; and mutton. I shall soon have wool on like a sheep. Plenty of lamb as well that grazed their way from down along Cape town. So take it on the whole, grub is pretty tough. One square meal from a Chinese restaurant would be a feast to this and water very poor.

"There are a good many boys here that I knew in Butte, but they say 'Butte for me before Africa.' Pay is not much in advance of Butte and far less comfort. It is dark by the time you get through work. Then it is in the cabin, smoke, play cards or go to bed, for it is not safe around the mines to go out in the dark on account of the black devils about the town."

1889 Richard killed in Alabama USA-ties to MI NJ NY CT ENG???

Source: The Weekly Age Herald, Birmingham, Alabama, February 13, 1889 at Birmingham Public Library Digital Collections

On last Saturday an accident occurred at the Woodward iron mines by which one of the best citizens of that section and one of the most responsible miners engaged at the mines lost his life. Mr. Richard Northy, a white man aged about 30 years of age, entered the mines to resume his work. He had hardly entered his drift before a mass of slate fell upon him, instantly killing him. The funeral took place Tuesday and was very largely attended, Mr. Northy being well known and widely respected. His remains were buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery. The Rev. L. E. Branscombe officiated. Mr. Northy leaves a wife and one child.-The Bessemer.

-------------------------

Source: The Weekly Age, Birmingham, Alabama, November 27, 1889. page 1 at Birmingham Public Library Digital
Collections

LOCAL.
......
Virginia Northey has sued the Woodward iron company for $40,000 for the death of her husband.
......

NOTE: I would be interested in knowing if anyone can confirm the identity of this Richard NORTHEY.

My theory is that he was a son of a John NORTHEY (born England circa 1828) and a Sarah J (maiden name unknown, born in New York). This John and Sarah J NORTHEY family lived in Randolph Township, Morris County, New Jersey, USA in 1880 with multiple children including an iron miner named Richard aged 20 who was born in Michigan. Another child of this family, Andrew J, was married in Jefferson County, Alabama in 1889 and later lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut with a number of others from this large family.

In a 1910 Jefferson County, Alabama census I found a V. ENGLISH, female, married twice, living in a household headed by her brother, G. A. DOWNIE. I thought V. ENGLISH may have been the widowed Virginia NORTHEY in a second marriage as also in the household were two nieces P. NORTHEY age 23 and B. NORTHEY age 20. They were born in Alabama and their father was born in Michigan. Perhaps Virginia was pregnant with the second daughter at the time of Richard's death and that is why the newspaper article only mentioned one child.

Thanks for any thoughts,
Karen

As he had a considerable sum of money and a handsome gold watch in his pockets when he disappeared, fears are entertained that he may have met with foul play.
Source: http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica
Alexandria Gazette, Septemeber 20, 1905, page 2

Divided Time With Husbands.

Butte, Mont., Sept. 20.-Two weeks ago the 20-year-old wife of George Melville, a miner, told her husband she was going out to attend the wedding of a friend. Monday it was discovered that she was the bride and had married Harry Northey, a young man living less than half a mile from her home. Mrs. Melville told Northey that Melville was her uncle, and she did not want him to know of her marriage. After the wedding she went back and lived with Melville for a week, and then returned to her younger husband, and remained with him until Monday when Melville succeeded in finding her. She denied him, and declared he was her uncle. Northey believed her notwithstanding the records of the Court of Great Falls, which showed that she married Melville in August, 1901. The girl four years ago was married to a man named Walbridge, who abused her, and was killed by her father, near Phillipsburg, Mont., for which crime the father, Carlisle Hunter, is serving a sentence in the State penitentiary. The young woman was arrested on a charge of bigamy.

The majority of the witnesses gave testimony in a very unwilling manner, their fear of the company preventing them from speaking their thoughts.

Richard Northey, of Mahanoy City, said the tendency of the wages for the past ten years has been on the decline. The increase in the number of workmen has been due to the influx of foreigners.

There was very little testimony given which would tend to show cause for the prevailing destitution.

The committee will meet again to-morrow.
________________

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer, January 26, 1888, Volume 118, Issue 22, page 1

...At the meeting of the Amalgamated Association Iver D.
Alvin Northey and Margaret Stanley

I'm looking for info on Alvin Norhey and Margaret Stanley. Margaret was a sister to my gg-grandmother. Margaret was born in Canada abt 1864 and the Stanley family moved to Vermont. Alvin Northey may have been born in New Hampshire, unknown to when he was born. Unknown to when he and Margaret married, except sometime after the 1880 census. I have no membership to Ancestry, but while doing a look-up for names on the 1900 census, no Alvin showed up, but two possible matches for Margaret did. There was one in Missoula (where my gg-grandmother had lived and some of the other children lived.) They other Margaret lived in Silver Bow, Montana. I know of no children. Any help is appreciated.

I don't know if there's any connection but my great uncle, Edwin Hosking and his wife, Ruth nee Penberthy, emigrated to USA from Hayle, Cornwall in 1920. Their two children were Stephen and Joanne. Stephen was born c1915 and Joanne c1919.

Edwin was born 1891 and was raised at 2 Mill Row, Hayle.

They moved to Michigan to join Ruth's brother - R.
Northey and Tarraway

I have a Richard Northey Tarraway (b 1824, d prob in 1870s) in my family tree. He was a Royal Navy officer and came from a family of sailmakers in Plymouth in Devon in the South West of England. (His father was also a Richard, and his mother was a Hester or Esther Glasson)

Northey as a middle name must have been quite important to the Tarraways as this Richard was the second son to be called Richard Northey. The first was born in 1814 but he died very young.

Are there any Northey researchers out there who might be able to suggest why Richard Tarraway had this middle name?

Thanks in advance

PS R N Tarraway was the third husband of my GGGgrandmother, Amelia Anna Mary Wood/Parsons nee Bell

Dear Bob,

I have notes from the church records of Kenwyn and Chacewater dealing with the marriage of Richard and Jane and some christenings of their children.

You probably already know that Richard Northy of the parish and Jane Polkinhorne of the parish were married in Kenwyn on November 23, 1825. Both signed their names and it appeared to me that he signed it Northey not Northy as per the officiating minister. One of the witnesses was William Northey, the other Richard Manuell.

Unfortunately, I don't know who would be the parents of your Richard, but hopefully the fact that he can sign his own name and the William Northey witness might be helpful clues for you. Do you have any idea who this William NORTHEY might be?

I haven't been able to figure out the parents of my James NORTHEY who married Grace CARVOLTH in 1824 in Kenwyn for certain either despite alot of data gathering. A witness to this marriage was George Moyle NORTHEY, a son of Henry NORTHEY and Jane MOYLE. Although I'd like to fit my James into a family, I'm not sold that this is the answer based on birthdates although Henry and Jane did have a son, James. I'm leaning more toward my James's parents being James NORTHEY and Mary SANDOE of Chacewood but I still lack convincing evidence. And there are other possibilities as well.

Creegbrawse is certainly close to Chacewood and Coosehecca which are locations in the area that I know my James and Grace lived in. However, as I'm sure you're aware there are many NORTHEYs in the vicinity. Too bad censuses didn't exist before 1841 to help us get back another generation!

Best wishes,
Karen in Pennsylvania, USA
Hi Bob,

Thanks for email. I have tracked my husband's family to New England area. But it is possible some descendants moved to Hill End area as they initially went chasing Gold at Rocky River and could have ended up there. There was another couple of Northey families also in Australia at the same time and I suspect it may be connected to one of them.

Regards Sally
