There were a group of Norton's who moved from
Pennsylvania to
Kentucky in the early 1800;s. One of them, William
Norton, became prominent in nail making in
Kentucky. His brother, Henry
Norton, my great-great-grandfather, left there to move to
Tennessee.
Following is information I have compiled about a couple of them. Hope this is of some value to you.

Henry
Norton is listed in records of Zion Lutheran Church in Harrisburg as being born 1 February 1797 and baptized 23 June 1797 by Reverend
Henrich Moller. Henry and
Julianna Moeller were witnesses to the baptism.
The
Norton family played a large part in
Logan county Kentucky history. William
Norton, who was the brother of Henry, was born 2 September 1781 in Harrisburg
Pennsylvania. He came to
Kentucky in 1806, settling near Lexington, in 1810 he moved on west to settle in
Logan county. The
Norton family was a family of financiers. When William came to
Logan county he began the manufacture of nails becoming extremely successful.
The author of the book The Story of
Logan county assumed that William and Henry
Norton came from Quaker parentage. The fact of the matter is that John
Norton and Susanna had strong ties to the Lutheran Church. It appears that all of their children were baptized in the church. After moving to
Kentucky they were identified with Southern Baptist.
It was in 1824 that Henry
Norton while living in
Logan county Kentucky decided to sell some land. The
Deed Book of
Logan county Kentucky, in which the transaction is recorded, indicates the John
Norton the father of Henry
Norton was deceased and buried in Harrisburg,
DAUPHIN COUNTY,
Pennsylvania.

From Tom Norton: I do have some information on John
Norton, and a picture of his and Susannah grave in Harrisburg PA. He was a carpenter and a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary army. He also ran a tavern in Harrisburg. He owned an island in the river that goes by Harrisburg. The island was located close to where the state capital is now built. As with many of the
Norton financial dealing from John to the present day he was able to "buy high and sell low".
JOHN
Norton John
Norton was living in Earl Township, Lancaster County
when he married Susanna
Hinkle the daughter of George
Hinkle and Barbara Roland.
John
Norton served as a Lieutenant in the Company of Captain Martin Bowman and David Morgan.
By 1790 John
Norton is living in
DAUPHIN COUNTY near the town of Harrisburg, which is now the state capital. The census indicates their was one free white male over the age of 16 obviously John
Norton. In addition there were three males under the age of 16. There were six females including John's wife Susanna. We know from the census that John
Norton and his wife had eight children in 1790.
I have been able to reconstruct the family names from different marriage, probate and land records of
DAUPHIN COUNTY. John and Susanna eventually had a total of 13 children. Henry
Norton our ancestor was number twelve.

John
Norton is mentioned as being on the list of taxable inhabitants of Louisburg for 1787. Louisburg was the community out of which Harrisburg grew. He is listed as a joiner by trade.
In 1791 the town of Harrisburg was incorporated and the names of "Harris Ferry" and Louisburgh" disappeared from the record. The tax returns for the borough of Harrisburg showed that John
Norton lived there.
John
Norton is mentioned in the building of the
German Reformed Salem Church. In the book Annals of Harrisburg the writer records "Previous to the erection of any regular church building in the borough, the citizens occasionally worshiped in a small one story log school house, which stood at the foot of Capitol Hill, at the corner of third and Walnut streets. The community at that early day being made up of all denominations, the original subscription paper for "'the first church,"' read for the "'use of the subscribers,"‘ and long after the erection of the house, clergymen of different denominations officiated in it, by permission, as opportunity occurred. The undertaking was, however, by those who professed the doctrines of Ulric Zwingli and Martin Luther; and the church was owned and occupied stedadly, only by the
German Reformed and Evangelical Lutheran congregations, and was erected on a lot given by John Harris. (It should be noted that after the death of Mr. Harris, his heirs released, for five shillings, all their right and title to the lot, to the trustees of the Reformed and Lutheran churches, as would appear from the record in the Recorder's office.) The lot was located at the corner of Chestnut and Third streets, extending 210 feet on the latter street to Cherry alley. The "'first church"‘ stood until the year 1854, at the corner of Third street and Cherry alley. It was built of logs, subsequently weather-boarded, two stories high, with a front of thirty-five feet five inches, and a depth of thirty feet five inches. The original subscription for the erection of this church reads as follows:
We the subscripters, do each of us promise to pay, or cause to be paid, unto John
Norton. Christian Gunckel, George
Redig and Henry Bruner, or their order of demand, the sum annexed to each of our names, respectively, to be held and appropriated by the said John
Norton, Christian Gunckel, George
Redig and henry Bruner, in purchasing materials for, and in building a Church and School, in some convent part of the town of Harrisburg, for the use of the subscribers. In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands, with the sum annexed, this 12 day of March, Anno Domini, 1787.
John
Norton was also involved the Friendship Fire Company. This company was the patriarch of the present fire department in the borough since its beginning in 1803. There was an indebtedness to the fire company and on February 9th 1808 a group of citizens met in John Norton's home to discuss what should be done. The group directed that a Mr. Goodman should give every one that was indebted to the company a call for the pay. If the individuals didn't pay then they should be sued.
In 1808 the local newspaper "The Oracle of
Dauphin" published this short article about John
Norton. The report stated that "a dancing school "'at Mr. Norton's large room"' is advertised.
The paper listed the following excerpt concerning John
Norton. "The persons who wish to encourage a singing school in the borough are requested to meet at Mr. John Norton's."
I have found among various legal records the following information about the children of John and Susanna
Norton. William
Norton was born 2 September 1781. Josua/Joshua/John
Norton was born 17 September 1795 "to parents John
Norton and wife Susanna". Reverend
Moeller pastor of the Lutheran church performed the baptism. on 30 January 1796. Henry
Norton is listed in records of Zion Lutheran Church in Harrisburg as being born 1 February 1797 and baptized 23 June 1797 by Reverend
Henrich Moller. Henry and
Julianna Moeller were witnesses to the baptism.
Sarah married Jacob Updegraff on 17 November 1809 in York county
Pennsylvania. The newspaper report is as follows.
Updegraff, Jacob and Miss Sarah
Norton daughter of John
Norton both of this town married Thursday 17 November 1809 by Reverend Petersen.
Jacob Updegraff is listed has having been christened at Saint James Church in Lancaster
Pennsylvania on 19 August 1792. This would mean that Jacob was approximately 17 when the marriage took place. It would seem reasonable to surmise that Sarah was close to the same age.
Susanna
Norton, one of John and Susanna daughters married James Rothrock. The Newspaper records that "Susanna
Norton daughter of John
Norton, York county 1 Feb 1807 Tuesday evening last in this town."
John
Norton and Susanna were witnesses at the baptism of John Jacob
Singer who was born on 7 December 1796 and baptized 15 Jan 1797. The parents were Jand and Nancy (
Norton)
Singer. Nancy
Norton married Jacob
Singer 16 February 1796.
Julianna
Norton was born 9 January 1799 and was baptized 16 April 1799. Pastor
Henrich Moeller and wife
Julianna were witnesses.
The
Norton family played a large part in
Logan county Kentucky history. William
Norton, who was the brother of Henry, was born 2 September 1781 in Harrisburg
Pennsylvania. He came to
Kentucky in 1806, settling near Lexington, in 1810 he moved on west to settle in

Kentucky they were identified with Southern Baptist.
It was in 1824 that Henry
Norton while living in
Logan county Kentucky decided to sell some land. The
Deed Book of
Logan county Kentucky, in which the transaction is recorded, indicates the John
Norton the father of Henry
Norton was deceased and buried in Harrisburg,
DAUPHIN COUNTY,
Pennsylvania.
John
Norton is buried in the Harrisburg Cemetery. He is listed as being buried with other veterans who served in the Revolutionary War in the document
DAUPHIN COUNTY Tombstone Inscriptions. In September of 1992 this writer went to the Harrisburg cemetery and found the grave where John and Susanna are buried. At the entrance to the cemetery is a bronze plaque with the inscription of all those buried in the cemetery that served in the Revolutionary war. Lieutenant John
Norton is listed. The inscription on the tombstone list John
Norton being born in 1750 and dying in 1822. The local paper of that day The Oracle of
Dauphin ran the following article concerning the death of John.
Norton, John July 13 1822, Saturday last in his 73 year, carpenter, one of the earliest settlers of this borough and a respectable citizen.
