I've posted this message in both Santa Clara and Yakima county boards, but here is a copy for Nortons. I'm especially keen to locate any of Luke W Norton (son of Charles H)'s decendants:

Hi,

I am trying to track down a part of my family that moved from Maine around the 1850-70's, especially one branch that moved up to Washington State (Yakima)... there is a family bible and genealogy that I would love to see.

The names are as follows:

John Norton b abt 1845 in Lexington, ME.
m Susan Sanor b. May 1856

1 Ray Norton b abt 1878 Santa Clara, CA

2 Linwood M Norton b 12 Oct 1879 Santa Clara, CA
m ?
1 Donald b abt 1906
2 Robert b abt 1908
3 Linn b abt 1912

3 Gus Norton

4 John Norton

5 unknown

John came to Santa Clara prior to 1870, and after the 1860 Census in Lexington, ME. His brother Charles H. Norton was in Calaveras Co., CA in the 1860 census working in the mines.

John was living with the Michael Sanor family in 1870 in Santa Clara. He eventually married the daughter Susan (mother's name was Susan as well)...

By 1880, John P. & Susan Norton have the older two sons. I have a letter dated 1941 that a cousin wrote to my GG Gfather stating that John had five children, but didn't know the name of the baby, the last time he had seen them, which had been some years before. He stated that John died in 1910.

In the 1900 Census Susan has a different last name (Coffey? Coffin?) and she and her son Linwood are living with a brother Walter L Sanor.

In the 1920 Census, Linwood M Norton has three sons, and by 1930 Census, he is living with the younger two sons.

So far, that is what I have on this branch.

John the elder, is the brother of Charles H Norton who married a Rexaville Braffett in 1865 and they moved to Alisal, Monterey, CA by the 1870 Census.

They eventually moved to Yakima, WA and it is that branch that I understand has a family bible, and genealogy that was done prior to my letters from Charles H's son writing them in 1941.

Luke b 10 Oct 1874 Santa Clara, CA d 4 Sept 1949
m 31 Oct 1901 Eva Belle Barbree b 27 Aug 1877 Salinas, CA

1 Frances R Norton b 24 Sep 1902 Yakima, WA

2 Lorraine (R) Norton about 1905 Yakima, WA
m

3 Rose M Norton b 30 Aug 1915 Yakima, WA
m

According to the letters, Frances was a spinster school teacher and lived with her parents. Lorraine and Rose both married, while Lorraine moved to California (prior to 1935 letter) and Rose married and remained nearby (according to 1935 and 1941 letter).

It may seem funny, but my NORTON's came from MO/IA/NE but my grandfather, Hulbert Everett Norton ended up in Yakima, WA married to a Carrie Sanders after he divorced my grandmother Daisy Hill Norton, and a woman named Rose (or Rosie) form MO. If you have any information on Bert Norton, would you please pass it on to me? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My g-g-gf was Charles H. Norton (b.Maine 1943) + Sarah P (b.1948 Indiana).

Children of Charles and Sarah:
Luke W. Norton (b. 1875) + Frankie Norton both born in California. Frankie was M#1 for Luke (b. Calif 1875 [+/-]; d.1897 in ); M#2 Belle B (b.1872). Belle and Luke had two children Frances (b. 1897) and Lorraine (1895), Rose??

I am part of their daughter Frances' line--albeit very short as she died within one year of giving birth to my grandfather Charles Calvin Wynkoop. Frances L. (NORTON) Wynkoop [also spelled Wyncoop] (b. 1866; d. October 29th, 1886 ). Obit for Frances L. NORTON Wynkoop "of Dakota creek "died in the family home "which occurred at Sehome " according to the Blaine Journal.

I was trying to get info from the cemetary board because I have no idea where these people are buried. It appears this is my lucky day. Lets compare notes!!!!!

Hi Gwen,

Yes I'd like to compare notes. I've been going down the lines from our common Norton ancestors. I've not been able to do much this year, but will try to be getting back to my genealogy soon.

I'll email you when I have a chance. I'd love to see if the Norton family bible can be found... Luke Norton alluded to it in some letters to my grandfather, his 1st cousin.

I don't have any information on Nortons from anywhere other than Maine & Massachussetts (well and Canada)....

The branch in Washington and California came from my Maine line.

Sorry. I'll definitely let you know if I stumble on anything in future!

Feel very free to contact me at Gen_Research06@yahoo.com

I have little information about the Norton family other that what I have been able to research for my ancester (G-Grandpa) Matthew Charles Wynkoop of Plumville & South Mahoning PA who married Frances Norton in 1884--Frances Norton Wynkoop would be my gr-grandma.

My grandfather Charles Calvin Wynkoop (b 1885 Blaine, Semiahoo, Whatcom County, Washington Territories; d 1953 Los Angeles, CA)

His father Matthew was living with the Nortons and Charles Calvin was only a year old when Frances died at the family home in Semhome, Whatcom County, Wash Territories.

"THE Blaine JOURNAL--Thursday, November 4, 1886:
DIED -- WYNCOOP - In Whatcom, October 29th, 1886, Frankie L., beloved wife of M. C. WYNCOOP, of Dakota creek, aged 20 years 4 months and 16 days. It was with universal sorrow that the news was received in this community of the death of Mrs. WYNCOOP, wife of M. C. WYNCOOP [Wynkoop], of Dakota creek, which occurred at Sehome last Saturday morning, from quick consumption. Mrs. WYNCOOP was universally respected and liked by all who knew her, and the sympathy of many friend extends to the sorrowing husband in his sad bereavement."

1885 census notes the Mr.&Mrs. CH Norton with Francis and Luke; 1887 census notes CH Norton family but no Francis but Matthew and Charles aged 2 are living with CH and his wife; 1889 census notes CH & wife and Luke are mentioned and Matthew Calvin and son Charles Calvin are also living with the Nortons. According to newspaper record, Matthew resigned from civic affairs in 1887 and he took his & Frances' child to his mother's home in Plumville, PA before 1890 and he returned alone in 1890 to sell his property on Dakota Creek--which was not far from HC Norton's place.

I have more on the Matthew Calvin & Charles Calvin Wynkoop. Unfortunately, I do not have any Bible info--for the Wynkoops or Nortons. I would be very interested in comparing notes and trying to find the Norton family Bible.

I have combined what you posted with my info about the Norton family.

Susan, you mentioned you were busy this year; fortuantely for me, I have a little more time until April, 2007.

If you have time, email me with info about the relatives of Charles H.Norton--especially those whou may have been or are still in the Santa Ana area of California. I am in the Los Angeles and Santa Ana is about a hour's drive. I could do some leg work there.

I am very interested in gathering information as my info on the Norton family and their son-in-law, my Gr-grandfather, Matthew Wynkoop who married Francis [Norton] Wynkoop, d. 1886. Matthew and Charles H. Norton were pioneers in Blaine. Matthew was tall--probably about 6'4" or taller--and it appears that he and Charles H. worked together to clear the land--according to newspaper articles.

Matthew and Francis had one child, [my grandfather] Charles Calvin Wynkoop (b Feb 1885)--wonder if Charles Calvin was named after Charles H. When Francis Norton Wynkoop died suddenly in Oct 1886. Newspaper article mentions her death but there is no mention where she was buried.

Matthew and Charles Calvin lived with the Nortons (according to census) and then Luke joined the Nortons (census again).
Shortly thereafter Luke married, Matthew moved Charles Calvin to Matthew's mother's home in South Mahoning, PA. Matthew returned to Blaine and was elected Justice of the Peace (newspaper noted that Matthew stated that he would move closer into town). Matthew sold the land he had cleared "at a profit". Eventually, Matthew left the Nortons, Blaine & Whatcom County before 1890 to return to his mother & son in PA.

Within a few years, he remarried a local widowed socialite, founded a bank, and eventually had two more children.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Gwen,

Thanks for the reply! Wow. Interesting info. I believe I have a bit more info on Francis, and of course on Luke and Charles H. Norton.

I won't be able to do any genealogy for at least a few more weeks, but I'll try to make an afternoon where I start diving back into it. I have missed being able to do any work on it for a while.

Just checking in to see if you have made any more progress on the Norton family. I would love to exchange info. I am down in So Calif and can do research in Orange County, CA if you can find the information about the Norton relative who lived in Orange, CA.

You mentioned letters from a relative that was dated around 1941. Do you still have them and are there any copies around?

Best,
Gwen
