I believe that Edley H. Norton is the E. H. Norton who married Jane F. Russell (aft July 1870 in Scott Co AR). According to notes by my great aunt (in 1959), Jane and E. H. Norton had three children Mary (died a 2 weeks), Annie (died at 2 years), and Austin (died at 2 years). Jane died around age 23 years. She is on the 1870 census with her parents (William and Mary Ann Russell). But I have not located Edley H. (or E. H.) Norton in 1870. There is a Ed H Norton with wife Sarah in Montague County Texas in 1880. I would appreciate any information related to E. H. Norton and Jane Russell.

Yes, I may be of some help. Mt grandfathe Alvin Kindle Norton as born in Pollack, Idaho about 1909 to Frank F. Norton and May Belle Hollenbeak. They married in 1881 in Jackson County, Oregon, and moved about the southern reaches of Oregon and Idaho. Frank and May Belle had othr kids - Eva, Zola, Pearl, and a son, Virgil. I am not sure where Everett Virgil is located, but I believe he may have settled in Ontario, Oregon. I can be reached at brent.norton72@yahoo.co.uk

Hello I am looking for information on the Nortons/Naughtons from Turpane, Ballyforan, Co. Roscommon. Ireland. Three daughters and son immigrated to New York in the 1890s-1904.

Their sister Norah was my Great Grandmother and remained in Ireland. She married my Great Grandfather, Malachy Mullen of Coolatubber Co. Roscommon, in 1911. Her marriage certificate shows her as Norton. However at the registration of the birth of her son her maiden name was recorded as Naughton. Malachy died in c.1914 leaving Norah with two young sons Malachy (Joe) and John. Malachy is my Grandfather and he died in 1982.

According to the 1911 census Norah was from Torpan Beg, Roscommon- this is now spelt Turpane. Her mother was Catherine who was widowed at the time. It would appear that Catherine had eight children still living.

We know that many immigrated under the name of Norton to America. Here is the information we have.

Katie Norton, who married a Dunne. From the Ellis Island records it would appear that Katie travelled between Ireland and New York three times between 1898 and 1904. In 1898 she was going to stay with a Mrs Clarke, who I assume is her sister mentioned below.

Annie Norton, who married a Clarke. We cannot find any definitive record of her going to New York, but I have a possible record for 1895. In 1898 Katie Norton (above), stayed with a Mrs Clarke at 52E 32nd ? New York. I don’t know which borough. My mother was penpals with a grandson, possibly great grandson of Annie’s, Brain Clarke. We have photos of Brain and his family taken in the early 1960’s. We know that his sister Karen married Pete McGovern on August 9th 1965. I don’t know which state they lived in. On the back of an old photo there is mention of a Mary Louise and Irene, but I don’t know who they are.

Ellen Norton travelled to New York in 1901. She stayed with Katie mentioned above at 265 Central Park New York. She returned to Ireland, possibly in 1914, and never married. She is buried under the name Ellen Naughton.

John Norton. He travelled to New York with Katie in 1904, but I know no more about him.

Mary F Norton. This is the sister John and Katie stayed with upon their arrival in 1904. I have no other knowledge of her.

Thomas is recorded as living in Torpan Beg, Roscommon on the 1911 census. Their mother Catherine was 72. Thomas was married to Mary, and they had a 1 year old daughter also Catherine.

Bridget (Biddie)Norton. My mother thinks that she married a Tully and lived in Galway.

There is also a family story of twin boys aged about 14 heading off to America, but never being heard of again.

Any information on Katie Dunne and Annie Clarke would be wonderful.

Susan, were you able to track down Luke W. Norton's relatives. I have been uable to find any living relatives of his girls. Were you able to find more documents or the Bible.

I would be interested in getting copies of any family documents you have for Charles H. Norton & Rexaville Braffit as they are my gr gr grandparents..my gr grandmother was their only daughter Frances.

I am aware of a Virgil Norton, born before 1910 possibly near Crater Lake area in southern Oregon. He was the brother of Alvin K. Norton, born c.1910 near Drewsey. Mr. A.K. Norton was my grandfather and passed in 1980 at age 70 in Portland, Oregon.

Visitation is 10 a.m.-noon Thursday at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton.

Mr. Norton was born on July 12, 1946, in Muscatine, the son of Corwin and Catherine Zimmerman Norton. He married Mary Lea Kellenberger in 1967.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, softball, bowling, demolition derby and dancing.

Survivors include his mother, Catherine Norton of Muscatine; two daughters, Tracie Tucker and her husband, Joseph, and Lisa Harris and her husband, Richard, all of Davenport; a son, Mark Norton and his wife, Melissa, of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Ann Emery of Davenport and Judy Jens and Grace Cole and her husband, Denny, all of Muscatine; and a brother, Griff Norton of Wilton.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport.

Mrs. Norton was born on Jan. 25, 1911, in Muscatine County, the daughter of John F. and Sadie Gray McClean. She married Paul N. Norton on May 25, 1935, in Andover, Ill. He preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1984.

In addition to being a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was a schoolteacher for three years in Muscatine County and church schoolteacher and superintendent of the Junior Department at First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of U.P.W., P.E.O. Chapter JS and Hannah Caldwell Chapter, DAR. She presented flags to new citizens at the naturalization ceremonies in Davenport. She volunteered at various church and community activities.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Norton Parker and her husband, Stephen, of DeKalb, Ill.; two sons, John E. Norton and his wife, Janet, of Moline, Ill., and Nile P. Norton and his wife, Sarah, of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Norton was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Buffalo Prairie, the daughter of Elmo and Floy Noble Marston. She married Russell Norton on Oct. 29, 1938, in Grandview, Iowa. He preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1988.

She graduated from Aledo High School. She was a homemaker and helped on the family farm. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, flowers and gardening. She was a member of the former Joy United Presbyterian Church and a current member of Joy United Methodist Church, where she was active in many groups over the years. More recently, she was a member of Golden Links at the church. She was also a member of the Ageless Achievers.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Long and husband Kenny of New Boston, Ill., and Joyce Lambert and husband Frank of Rock Island, Ill.; a son, Bill Norton of Aledo; six grandchildren, Dave, Doug, Sarah, Denise, Erin and Alex; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Carolyn; and a brother, Bill Marston.

She belonged to the Ladies Aide at Wesley United Methodist Church. She had a good sense of humor, enjoyed dancing, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include one son, Griff Norton of Wilton; three daughters, Grace Cole and husband, Denny, of Muscatine, Judy Jens of Muscatine, and Ruth Ann Emery of Davenport; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and special friends, Dr. E.L. and Marilyn Wallace.

He graduated from St. Mel's High School, Chicago.

He was an U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was a patrolman for the Chicago Police Department, like his father and grandfather before him, retiring to New Boston in 1990 after 32 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Police, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dennis Zanoza of Florida and Alan Zanoza and wife Marsha of Brookfield, Ill.; two granddaughters, Melanie and Anna Zanoza, both of Brookfield; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Riegler and husband John, Dolly Harvanek and Jeanette Rasi; a brother-in-law, Ronald Flowers and wife Petri; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Edward and John.

She was a lifetime cook and did catering at various restaurants. She was a member of the Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church and its ladies aid. She was a member of the Progressive Club and the BPW. She was a former 4 H leader, former officer and member of the Order of Eastern Star and past Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Willey of Batavia, Ill., Helen (Mrs. Carleton) Rider of Davenport, LeAnn (Mrs. Donald) Rahlf of Wilton; two sons: Paul (and his wife Rose) Norton of Bella Vista, Ariz., Donald (and his wife Sue) Norton of Durant; three sisters: Louise Duncan of Tipton, Carleen Wieck of Wilton, Pearl (Mrs. Carl) Crispin of Tipton; 16 grandchildren; 30

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wilton, and the Sugar Creek Ladies Aid. She was a charter member of the Wilton Progressive Club. She loved reading her bible and daily devotions. She enjoyed writing poetry and doing handwork.

Survivors include - 1 Daughter: Marguerite Knowles of Momence, Ill.; 2 Sons: Wilbert (and his wife Rachel) Norton of Tipton, G. Melburne (and his wife Mary) Norton of Wilton; 1 Daughter-in-law: Beverly Norton of Wilton; 20 grandchildren; 61 Great grandchildren; 23 Great-great grandchildren.

The Edward Norton born abt 1687 was not married to Jane Grimes Rose. She was his Mother. Info found in 2006 at Swarthmore College in PA shows that Jane Grimes married William Rose in 1654 & Edward Norton in abt 1680(She was listed as Jane Rose widow). Edward born 1687 wife unknown did have two children Mary(1712-1715) and Edward(1715-1720)who came to the US and were both here by 1733. Quaker marriage records for Mary(1733)& Edward(1739) show that their father was deceased at the time of their marriage. Edward is listed as a witness at Mary's wedding.

Ralph E. Norton, 61, died early yesterday in a local hospital following a short illness.

Born in Hilmar, Mr. Norton had lived in this area all his life. He was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Norton, of Hickman; two sons, John E. Norton of Hayward, and Herbert R. Norton, Arlington, Tex.; a daughter, Naomi Jane Norton, Hickman; three brothers, John B. Norton, Hayward; Carl E. Norton, Texas and Floyd F. Norton, La Crescenta; three sisters, C. Jane Croft, Santariaum, Calif.; Clara Shogren, Oregon and Irene Murphy, Hilmar and five grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Norton
Mortuary with Dr. Wayne Bigelow and Brother Warren Bell officiating.

Interment will be in the North Hilmar Cemetery.

I think we are tracking the same family. Edward Crayton Norton (b. 1862) was the son of Irving Washington Norton and Lydia Ann King. He had a brother named Farrand Joel Norton, born 1867, in Ithaca.
I'm more interested in their mother, Lydia Ann King, but was hoping that tracking down her descendants might provide some clues on her family. Her father, Levi King, abandoned the family and moved to Canada and started another family. We are descendants of his second family.

Daniel or Danice Norton of Ireland/Wisconsin

My 3rd gr. grandfather was either Daniel or Danice (male) Norton, b. Ireland, immigrated to Oak Creek (Racine), WI in about 1838-40. His daughter was Mary (weren't they all named "Mary"?). She was b. Ireland in about 1825 and m. James B. Osborne. They m. in the Racine area in 1845. James Osborne was, according to Census records, b. in Ohio. I simply can't find a James B. Osborne somewhere in Ohio. I think he died about 1860.

Mary Norton Osborne had on here death certificate that her father was "D. Norton" and her mother was Mary McGhin, both b. Ireland. Any help would be so great. I've been looking for where the Nortons were b. in Ireland.

Does anyone have information about the Fairview, York Co., PA Nortons?

I am looking for information about John Norton (born about 1797-1799) who was the son if Isaac Norton.

He purchased land with my GGG-Grandfather, John Reed, after moving with a bunch of the Nortons (including Hugh Norton) to Wayne Co. Ohio in 1829.

I'm trying to figure out if John Reed and John Norton knew each other before John Reed married Mary Norton (daughter of Hugh Norton) and possibly where John Norton was living before moving to Ohio.

These are Nortons that I am also interested in. Isaac's son John Norton bought property with my GGGGrandfather, John Reed, in Wayne Co., Ohio in 1829-1830. I believe he is the uncle of my GGGGrandmother, Mary Norton (daughter of Hugh Norton).

I believe the Nortons and John Reed's family moved from PA together to Wayne Co. in 1829 based on John Reed's obit and the land records. I also have a pile of stuff from the Wayne Co. library about the Norton's that I still need to scan and transcribe.

He may be the son of Isaac Norton. I have a land record where he buys property in Wayne Co. in 1829 with my GGGGrandfather, John Reed.

Bridget Norton and Winifred Norton

Looking for information or the descendants of Kathleen Downey.

Kathleen’s parents were Patrick (John) Downey b 14th January 1872 in the Parish of St Johns, Limerick, Ireland. Patrick’s wife was Bridget Norton born about 1872 in Ireland. They married in 1895 in Massachusetts; USA They lived in Boston City, Suffolk, Massachusetts. The children born in Massachusetts were – Catherine 1895, William 1898, Martin 1901 & Mary 1906. Patrick & Bridget show on the 1900 & 1910 census results. Also on both census returns is Winifred Norton, Bridget’s mother.

The next records we have of Patrick are when he joined the Military in 1914. Patrick’s records show that his dependants were Winifred Norton his mother-in-law and Kathleen (this may be another child or Catherine 1895. Patrick has spelt it Kathleen in his Army application) his daughter he states here that he is a widow. The residential address is given as 36 PENNYWELL, LIMERICK. I do not know what happened to Bridget and the other children born in Massachusetts.

Patrick’s 1914 WW1 pension record shows that he was serving in the CORK RGA REGIMENT NO 614. The 4th May 1916 to 12 May 1918 Patrick served in Malta. Here his dependants in 1918 changed to Ellen Constance Cherrett and daughter Phyllis. On the 31st May 1918 Patrick was sent to India and came back 3rd June 1919.

On the 21st September 1919 Patrick married Ellen Cherrett (Nell) and the residential address was then, Poole Hill, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England. Patrick was medically discharged from the army 29th November 1919 and died in 1928 in Southampton.

After Patrick died Ellen married again, Eli Joe Ernest Toms in 1929 and had three more children. None of Patrick’s first children were brought up with the Toms family yet they would have been very small at the time (Phyllis 12, Mary 9, Alys Dorothy 6 and John 4 four years old) so who brought up these children?

The only person I can not account for is Kathleen. They all grew up knowing each other and were in contact with each other through adulthood. They also visited Ellen from time to time.

I have found him on census' in both Salem, Washtenaw Co., MI and Nankin, Wayne Co., MI. He died in Nankin, Wayne Co. His wife's name was Nancy. His second wife's name is Emily Lilley.

Patrick & Catherine had 3 sons. Two (John b 1903, & William b 1905) survived. One (Martin b 1913) lived only 5 minutes.

Do you know if Catharine (Norton) Gately and her husband had a daughter named Annie? My grandmother was a Norton. Her father was Bernard Norton married to Catharine Walsh. They had 3 sons, John Edward (from Bernard's first marriage), Patrick, and William. My grandmother, Catherine, was their youngest child and married Bernard Luppold. My mother always talked about her cousin Annie Gately but I've never been able to find the connection to the Nortons.

This Norton family lived in Roslindale if that is any help to you.

I have been researching the John Norton family. John was born in 1799 in Ireland and died in Brampton, Ontario, Canada on September 15, 1853. He married Margaret Finn of Ireland in Ireland - Margaret was born ca 1811 & died in Chinguacousy, Ontario, Canada. Their first child - John - was born, 1832, on the Isle of Man died Feb. 16, 1929, in Peel, Ontario, Canada. Their second child - Thomas - was born in Ireland - 1836 and died on August 22, 1910 in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. They had 6 more children - we are directly related to Thomas. Any help would be great in finding more information on the first John William Norton & Margaret Finn. Thank you.

My line is William's brother Joe Peter. I have info that says William had 10 children, the last being Tennesse "Tennie" b. 16 May 1856 & d. 2 Feb 1935, m. George Henderson Gosnell. All our info is exact except for Arta/Artie - Joseph b. 1846/1847 - Melinda b. 1849/1850. I too have seen Gunter/Gosnell/Chandler and Norton/Shelton lines cross more than one time. I believe that it is true.

The 1857 map of Medina Village, Ohio says A. Alcott residence on West Alley (the house is still there). Business: carriage and wagon maker on Washington Street. Addison Alcott was Medina County coroner 1852-1856. 1850 census says Addison Alcott born about 1809 in CT, wife Almira b. about 1815 in CT, children Hannah J. born in Ohio about 1849 and Mary E. born Ohio about 1847.
