It may take me a while to get it all together, hope thats ok!, as I have just started a new job and thats taking a bit of my time at the moment.

I will have a look into the whereabouts of Alexander's son William (unless you have managed to find him by now) and think your right, he probably did immigrate.

Would it also be possible for you to send me a copy of Alexanders will? I lost the digital copy I had when my last laptop died on me. Have since learned my lesson and now have everything backed up on an external HD :)

Hope to speak to you soon,
Mhairi

Hi Mhairi,

I have that same book, Murder in Cumbria. I spent time in Carlisle last year finding the family grave and researching the newspapers in the local library. Both the Edinburgh and Carlisle newspapers covered the murder and subsequent trial and aquittal of Archibald. I also visited the site of the murder at West Walls, just behind the Cathedral and Alexander's last home in a village called Great Corby, just outside Carlisle.
Have you done any research into Alexander's children? He had eight. Five daughters and three sons. His first-born was William, born in Edinburgh on 30/11/1856. I cannot trace him further than the 1871 census in Carlisle when he would have been 14/15 years old. He seems to disappear after that. Although, he must have been alive when his father wrote his will in 1908. William is one of the beneficiaries of that will. My only guess is that he may have emigrated. Can you throw any light on this? I can find all the other children through to their deaths.

I would like a copy of the info you have on James and Grizel(Grace) and their family, if that is not too much trouble.

I think that the reason we cannot find any recording of Alexander's birth, c1836, is because before 1855 it was not obligitory to record it and therefore, for some reason, it was never entered into any parish register. If I do find it I'll let you know.

Do you want a note of my root back to Alexander?

I think that there may be a link to the South African Norvals but like you I have no confirmation. If I do establish a link I will let you know.

Regards,

Norval.

Hi Norval,

Thanks for your message and the information it contained. It was very "strange" to get your message as I had just recieved, in the mail, a book that I had ordered in regards to the Norval Murder called Murder in Cumbria. It was odd to get the two at the same time.

If you'd like I can send you some information on James and Grizell (Grace) and their fairly large family, though not Archibalds birth. That one is still eluding me. I haven't got further back from James yet, though there are some who think he was related to some Norvals who went to South Africa. Sadly I haven't been able confirm or deny that yet.

Hi Mhairi,

I am fairly new to this game and have just discovered your message board regarding the Norvals in Scotland.

I am the GG grandson of Alexander Norval c1836. I don't know how much you know of him. My research so far has taken me back to his grandparents James and Grisel. However, I wasn't aware of how many children James and Grisel had had.

Apart from James and John I had only found Alexander's sister Grace and brother's Archibald and William.

Did you find any record of Alexander's birth in OPR's or otherwise? I havn't so far. It was his marriage records which led me to his parents and grand parents.

Alexander came through to Edinburgh and trained as a currier in leather. He married Alison Rodger from Tranent and then lived in Edinburgh for a few years where their first two children William and Elizabeth respectively were born. They then moved to Ireland (no idea whereabout) where ther third child, Margaret, was born. They then settled in Carlisle where five further children were born. I am the great grandson of their son Alexander Rodger Norval who, although born in Carlisle, lived in Scotland from a very early age.
Alexander eventually set up his own leather business in West Walls, Carlisle. He also had business interests in Scotland and travelled between Carlisle and Edinburgh frequently.

On 5th November 1910, at the age of 75, Alexander was murdered at West Walls. His youngest son, Archibald, was arrested and taken to trial for his father's murder. Archibald worked in the business with his father. He was aquitted. As a result the murder is still unsolved to this day. In spite of his aquittal life became uncomfortable for Archibald in Carlisle so he emmigrated to Australia with the intention that his wife and children would follow on once he was settled. However, the first world war started and that never happened. His wife and children remained in this country. After the trial, Alexander's wife Alison moved to London to be with one of her daughters. She died there almost a year later aged 80. Her body was returned to Carlisle to be buried alogside her husband.

My grandfather used to tell us the details that he remembered of the whole episode. He was only 14 when his grandfather was murdered.
Both the Carlisle and Edinburgh newspapers of the time have full coverage of the events.

I hope this is of interest to you.

Norval.

P.S. I was given my mother's maiden name as my first name.

Hi,

I know the feeling !!

Janet Harris sent me these two messages a little while ago.

Message 1:
Hi, My 4X great grandfather was John Norval, he was a comb maker in Glasgow, Scotland. He migrated with his wife Janet Foyar and three sons, John, Archibald and William on the ship Brilliant in 1817 bound for South Africa.
They left behind two daughters, Jean and Janet, who stayed in Scotland and later married,. Another son, Henry (my line) left Glasgow for London in December 1816.

Message 2:
Hi Doug thank you for replying so speedily. I think you're absolutely correct in saying that William and Archibald were John seniors brothers. He also had a brother James , who married Grisel Pettigrew in 1794, and a sister Janet. I also found what I think could have been a previous marriage for John junior to a Jean Baird, but he would have been only 16 at the time so maybe it's not him. My 4X great grandfather Henry settled in London and carried on working as a costermonger/market trader and died about 1860.

I will contact her and ask how she made those links.

Regards

Doug

Hey Doug

I have seen some information on the web about the four Norvals being Moodie settlers - three brothers and one of their sons. Can i ask how you made the connection between them and James?

I have a contact on another site who claims that James, John, Archibald and William are the sons of William Norval and Jean Young so you can understand that i'm getting a little confused and need to have some evidence to back it all up with.

I know that Archibald married across in South Africa, do you know if there is any mention of him being married previously? As i have another contact who is decended from a Archibald Norval (comb maker, as they all seem to have been) and Christina Blackstock and i have been trying to work out if this is the same Archibald who moved to SA as he doesnt appear in the 1841 nor in any of the burial/mi indexs, though i know these are not complete.

Anyway, i'd appreciate if you can shed any light on this whole mess that could help me untangle it all.

Regards
Mhairi

Hi Mhaeri, saw your postings re the Norval family. I have Norvals based in Glasgow from around 1798 to 1850's, specifically John Norval marrying Janet Foyar, son Henry Norval born around 1810 moved to the East End of London. Janet and John Norval had quite a large family, second son was John, daughters Jean and Janet. Have not thoroughly researched the family so names are missing. Believe the location of the family was the Gorbals in Glasgow. Can you give me any help? Many thanks Janet.

I have finally made a breakthrough...

I have found on the IGI a record of a Thomas Andrew Norwell being born in Auchtergaven, Perth Sct. 23 May 1827 to Charles Norwell and Agnes Anderson.

I have also found a marriage between a Charles Norval and Agnes Anderson 04 Nov. 1822 in Kircaldy, Fife. They had from what I can gather two children (OPR records)

Joseph Norval b. 13 Feb. 1826 Prestonpans
Thomas b. 23 May, 1827 Auchtergaven

I have found in the 1841 census of Thornton, Markinch Fifeshire a Joseph Norval age 70 living with a Joseph Norval age 15 and a Thomas Norval, age 13. I am wondering if this elder Joseph Norval is the boys' grandfather/uncle. I believe they are probably the children born to Charles and Agnes.

If any one has information on this family...I would be grateful to hear from you.

Sue

I am searching for the birthplace of Thomas A. Norval, born circa 1827 in Scotland. He emigrated to New York State and resided
in St. Lawrence County from about 1850 to 1880. He married Mary Shearer of Hammond, New York circa 1850. I am trying to trace this family back to Scotland.
I have searched both the IGI and the OPR records of Scotland and find one Thomas Norval born during this time period.

The family I have found in Glasgow are as follows:

Thomas Norval married Jean (Jane) Main
April , 1819 Glasgow.
They had the following children:

James, b. June 19, 1820, Glasgow
Grizel, b. 19 Nov., 1921, Glasgow
John, b. 2 June, 1823, Glasgow
Thomas, b. 27 July, 1825, Glasgow
William, b. 16 Jan. 1828, Glasgow.

I have been unable to draw a solid link between the Thomas Norval born in Sct. and the Thomas Norval who died in St. Lawrence County circa 1880. If any one is researching this family, I would like to make contact.
Thanks.
Sue

This is a long shot; I am interested in the "William" you have identified as a son of this couple.

According to an obituary, my gggrandmother, Sarah FITZPATRICK, was born in Pennsylvania (29 July 1818). (The 1880 U.S. Census of Wasco County, Oregon suggests her parents were also born in Pennsylvania). According to her obituary, she moved with her family when she was two years of age to Ohio where she grew up and married a William NORVAL by whom she had one son, Thomas Norval. Mr. Norval lived only a short time. Sarah and her son moved with her family (family of origin or procreation?) to Illinois. She then married William McATEE in 1844 in Pike county, Illinois.

We have no other information on our William and were wondering if our William and your William are connected, or if you have any information that may pertain to our William.

Thank you for your time.

Rick Cantrell
cgcantrell@juno.com

Hi Sean:

I was just wondering if you have checked out the Huntingdon Quebec Webpage on Rootsweb?

http://www.rootsweb.com/~qchuntin/Default.htm

There are some interesting postings in the Huntingdon Gleaner if you search the files:

i.e. o5/07/1885
Mary Helene de Blaquiere, relict of the late R.H.
NORVAL surname - Scotland

I'm looking for information on my GGGgrandmother, Catherine BUTTERCASE. She is also cited as BUTTARS, BUTTERS, BUTTER, and BUTTAR in various sources. She was born in approximately 1800-1810 in Scotland. She married Frederick NORVAL on 21 Jan 1831 in Dysart, Fife, Scotland. They had at least one child; I do not know of others: Jane NORVAL (b. 1843 in Fife, Scotland).

Jane NORVAL, daughter of Frederick and Catherine [Buttercase] NORVAL, married (1)James GOW and (2)William FISHER. Her children with James GOW were as follows:
-Alexander GOW (b. 21 Nov 1861 in Dundee)
-Catherine GOW (b. 29 Nov 1863 in Dundee)
-James GOW (b. 3 Mar 1865 in Dundee)
-[Child] GOW (b. 26 Jan 1866 in Dundee)

I do not know whether James GOW died or whether he and Jane NORVAL were divorced, but she became remarried to William FISHER (b. 1839 in Clackmannan, Scotland), son of William FISHER and Elizabeth DUNCAN, and they had one child: William FISHER (b. 10 Aug 1874 in Dundee, Scotland).

William FISHER, son of William FISHER and Jane NORVAL, married Annie Wishart PIRIE (b. 24 Oct 1873 in Dundee, Scotland), daughter of Alexander PIRIE and Julia Ann BUIST, on 19 Nov 1895 at St. Mary's Church on Ward Road, in Dundee, Scotland. William and Annie [Pirie] FISHER had one child: Gilbert Wishart FISHER (b. 6 Feb 1897 in Dundee, Scotland).

I have more information on the descendants of this line, and would be happy to share it if anyone is interested. I am currently looking for information on the ancestors of Frederick NORVAL, husband of Catherine BUTTERCASE (BUTTERS, BUTTARS, BUTTER, BUTTAR), and apparently born in Fife, Scotland. Any information or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Stephanie Sampson
Los Angeles, CA
FamilyTresearch@hotmail.com
