Social Security Death Index
Name:	Harold Norwood
SSN:	706-09-5017
Last Residence:	04445 Hampden, Penobscot, Maine, United States of America
Born:	28 Jun 1905
Died:	Aug 1970
State (Year) SSN issued:	Railroad Board (Issued Through) (Before 1951)

-----
Railroad workers were enrolled in the same Social Security program, but from 1937 to 1963 they had numbers ranging between 700 and 728 as the first three digits. In 1964 their numbers began to reflect the same geographic location as other workers. Some railroad workers received Social Security benefits, but some did not. However, it is wise to check the SSDI in any case.

The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board was created in the 1930s, and has records dating back to 1937, but they exist only for those whose employers were covered under the Railroad Retirement Act. You can obtain information about deceased individuals for genealogical purposes. The records are arranged by Social Security number. If you do not know the number, provide as much identifying information as you have.

http://www.rrb.gov/mep/genealogy.asp

Genealogy Research
Effective October 1, 2010, many requests for genealogical information concerning railroad workers will be handled by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) rather than the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB). However, some requests will continue to be handled by the RRB. Genealogists and family historians should still initially contact the RRB with their requests. We will determine whether the RRB or NARA has the information requested.

Genealogists should note the following:

The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board administers a Federal retirement benefit program covering the nation's railroad workers. The records we maintain deal primarily with the administration and payment of these benefits. We will provide information on deceased persons for the purpose of genealogical research. However, we will not release information on a person who is still living without the written consent of that person.

Our records are limited to individuals who worked in the rail industry after 1936. Please do not contact us with requests for records before that date. We do not have that information. Nor do we generally have any pertinent records of persons whose rail service was performed on a casual basis and/or was of short duration. Also, the RRB's records are only on persons whose employers were covered under the Railroad Retirement Act. Employers such as streetcar, interurban, or suburban electric railways are not covered under this Act.
Fee

The fee for searching our records is currently $27 for each employee on whom records are requested. Your check or money order should be made payable to the Railroad Retirement Board. The fee is payable before any search is attempted. If we determine that NARA has custody of the requested records, you will be informed of that and your inquiry and payment will be returned to you with information on how to contact NARA. However, the fee is not refundable if, after a search is conducted, we determine that no records exist.

What We Need

The RRB's records are kept by the railroad employee's social security number (SSN), which often appears on a death certificate. In some cases, if that number is not available, having the employee's full name, including middle name or initial, and complete dates of birth and death may be of some help in determining whether we have any records of that person. However, in dealing with relatively common surnames, it is usually not possible to make a positive identification without the employee's SSN.

Where to Send Requests

Requests for genealogical information and accompanying checks should be sent to:

U.S. Railroad Retirement Board
Congressional Inquiry Section
844 North Rush Street
Chicago, Illinois 60611-2092

Generally, the RRB requires at least 30-60 days to reply to genealogical inquiries.

====
Fees For Processing Requests For Individual’s Social Security Record
$27 Request for copy of Original Application for Social Security Card (Form SS-5), SSN Provided (Printout from microfilm)
$29 Request for copy of Original Application for Social Security Card (Form SS-5), SSN Not Provided (Printout from microfilm)
$16 Request for Computer Extract of Social Security Number Application, SSN Provided (*Numident only requested)
$18 Request for Computer Extract of Social Security Number Application, SSN Not Provided (*Numident only requested)
$16 Search for Information about Death of an Individual, SSN Provided (SSA does not usually have place of death, burial, or cause of death)
$18 Search for Information about Death of an Individual, SSN Not Provided (SSA does not usually have place of death, burial, or cause of death)
$25 Forward a letter to inform a person about entitlement to money.

http://www.ssa.gov/foia/html/foia_guide.htm

Linda

You might try the Railroad Board. They might have a name and maiden name for her.

I do not know how much this helps you out but I found the grave marker of an Abel J. Norwood 1818-1896 while hunting a few miles south of Centreville MS. I saw the obelisk shaped grave marker and being a Freemason myself I had great interest in checking it out. Upon getting closer, it is a gray marble obelisk with a square and compasses on it and it shows the name Abel J. Norwood and the birth and death dates. Whoever he was, he was a Mason and one heck of a good guy to get that kind of Masonic grave marker. If anyone is interested in knowing more about the grave or wants the picture of it that I took, my email is mesakineticresearch@gmail.com

David Norwood is one of my ggg+grandfathers. His wife Mary Morse also called Polly was born in Yates Co. NY. They had 4 sons.Ed C Norwood ?-1915, Philip B (Chilly) Norwood 1831-1860, George R Norwood (my family line)1839-1901, and Dorcus Hatch Norwood 1841-1915. Dorcus changed his name to William. I have Dorcus born in Millport, Chemung co, NY and died in Lindley, Steuben co. NY. I cannot find anything back further than David although there is some iffy stuff I am working on. I guess we are cousins somehow as our relatives are related. How fun.
Ro

Norwood - Jefferson County, AL?

Hello everyone!
I am looking for more information on my great, great grandfather Louis T (Thomas?) Norwood - born around 1858 in Alabama. He was married to Mary born in 1857 in Alabama – I do not know her maiden name. Louis T Norwood disappeared off the census between 1910 and 1920 (Mary is widowed in 1920 census). I have so far been able to locate the family primarily in Jefferson County, Alabama in or around Bessemer & Birmingham. I know very little about both Louis and Mary and would love to find out all I can of these two! Here is a listing of their bloodlines:

Louis and Mary had 6 children
Monroe B: 1887 D: unknown
Rosa D. B: 1889 D: unknown. She married Will Davis. Will was a miner.
James B: 1890 D: unknown
Minnie B: 1898 D: unknown. She married a Lonnie Lowery. We think Lonnie was also a miner.
Louis/Lewis Thomas B: 1900 D: 1979. He married Lillie Mae Griffin (Griffith?). She was my great grandmother. Louis/Lewis was a miner.
Annie B: 1904 D: unknown

Louis/Lewis and Lillie Mae had 11 children and 9 survived. Louis/Lewis was a miner in Bessemer & Birmingham for several years before moving his family and settling in California. All of the children were born in Alabama
1 infant – lived only 7 days
1 infant – lived only 21 days
Ellen
Larry
Leeman
Shirley
William “Bill”
Edna R. B: 1925 D: unknown
Lou E. B: 1929 D: unknown
Barbara “Bobbie” B: 1937 D: 2002 Her married. name was Medieros (spelling might be incorrect)
Agnes Louise B: 1939 D: 2010. Louise was my grandmother and she married Michael Newman from New York.

You may contact me through ancestry or via personal email at navywife21209@gmail.com
Thank you ahead of time!
I can't seem to find any reference to her parents except that her father's name may have been William. I would like to find out about her side of the family and am hoping someone out there knows something and can help me.

Thanks,
Linda "Ray" Paradis

Hi, Dan,
Just found your response in my online search for more about WE Norwood. Your email was not available on the post.

As said in my original post, looking for info about my husband's grandfather William Elbert Norwood and a dairy farm in Shelby or Fayette county. I am the wife of Elbert Malcolm Norwood's youngest son, Ralph Gregory Norwood, and we are just trying to do a little genealogical research. We don't want anything from it--just more info about his dad and dad's family.

Thanks for any info you could give us.
I am the person that Dick was helping with my Norwood genealogy. I scanned a newspaper article that my mother had about Sanders Marion that was written while he was alive. It doesn't mention his father, John P, but it does talk about his grandfather, who it lists as John Norwood, but I believe was John T Norwood. It also says John was killed by a Carolina Tory in 1782 at the end of the Revolutionary War. This should provide another hint to this line.

The article also lists Sanders' wife as Mary I. Norwood, but this is probably a typo, since there are other documents that say her name was Mary Jane.

E-mail me if you would like a copy of the scan, since this message board doesn't allow me to post PDF files.

David Norwood

My great grandfather, Frank Norwood, was born in 1849 in Delaware, and considered himself as a mulatto. Both of his parents were born in Delaware as slaves. He married Laura in 1886, who was born in Mississippi. He married her at 36 and she was 18. They had at least 6 children: H N, Edna, Rachel, Arie, Jinniebell, and Comodore. Frank Norwood appeared in the 1900 census only. In 1910, the census shows his wife as a widower.

I am trying to find out any information about Frank Norwood.

Help, Looking For My Great Grand parents Parents

Hi, I've been at a road block for years with this. My grand parents on my grandfather side are Charles Norwood and he married a Mary. I do not know her madden name. I only found census records of her. But they just given her married name and birth place (Alabama). As well as her parents which is in Alabama. But I don't have their names, the same problem for Charles Norwood. Born in Louisiana and his parents same birth place as well.

Unknown Norwood
Charles Norwood B:1881
george norowood B :1921( my grandpa ) Unknown Norwood

Mary Norwood B:1899 Unknown.

I don't know what to do... I have birth dates for his parents/place but that's all. My grandfather passed away in 2007. And his siblings are gone as well. I also do not have contact with their children. Hopefully I can find someone on here that can help or a long lost relative that has the same tree.

P.s my family tree is mixed with black/white/native american on my grand parents census. So it ether says mulatto or black/negro 1930/1920 Chicago ward 2

Hi. I don't know if I misread the certificate or if there was an error in it, but Sanders Norwood's death certificate says his mother was Mary Harris. I have been researching this family too for a participant in the Norwood Y-DNA Project at FTDNA. I am trying to trace forward from James Fletcher Norwood's sons, but it is very difficult. George L., James A., and John A. Norwood seem to disappear after they showed up in the 1880 census with their father and mother. I know their mother was dead by 1900, but where did they go off to? I also wonder if John P. Norwood and William G. Norwood were brothers, if William wasn't John's son. John was probably born between 1771 and 1780, so he might have been William's father, just.
I'm attaching a gedcom file of my work on these Norwoods and allied families. There may be errors.
Thanks,
Dick Norwood

Hi,

I just posted an old legal notice regarding the estate of Dr. David NORWOOD, late of Manchester, Massachusetts. William NORWOOD is listed as the administrator, and Abial BURGES (BURGESS?) is mentioned.
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of the Essex Register newspaper (Salem, MA) dated August 29, 1810, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/dnorwood08291810essexma.html
I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_ma.html
http://theoldentimes.com/legals.htm
http://theoldentimes.com
ESPER ANN NORWOOD b. ca. 1808 CHATHAM CO., N.C.

What ever happened to Esper Ann Norwood b. ca. 1808? I have searched high and low. Her grandparents were William Norwood and Ruth Wyche. I think her father was probably Henry Norwood. Isaac Kirby was her guardian from 1813 to 1825. Isaac Kirby's wife, Nancy Ann "Ann" Norwood, a dau. of Wiliam and Ruth, also had a sister named Esper Ann Elizabeth Norwood b. ca. 1783-1788 in Chatham Co., N. C. but died in Carroll Co., Tennessee. She married William Rosser.

The name Esper Ann has been used through the years by my Norwood, Morrow and Grant families.

I will appreciate any leads.

Nancy
