Hi,

I am looking for anyone who is researching John Nottage, born about 1738, who married Frances Spencer in 1771 in Saffron Walden. I have found a baptism for a John Nottage in Saffron Walden in 1736 and am wondering if it is the right person. His parents were Nicholas Nottage (a butler) and Anne Whitbey from Royston. Always assuming he is the right John. Any ideas?

Glyn Scally (Mrs)

Was he a goldsmith, and did have have a daughter named Eliza, who married beneath her? According to family history, we are related to George Swan Nottage - if James was his uncle, that would make Eliza, my great great great grandmother, his cousin.

Hello Richard thank you for your reply. My tree also goes back to Edward and Elizabeth. Nottage is a fairly uncommon name so I have been looking for a link with other families in Essex/Hertfordshire without success. There are far too many James and it almost impossible to see who is who. I keep looking. Regards Rosemary

Thanks also for your e-mail address. Did I give you mine? If not, it is- janetlassiter@comcast.net. I am taking a trip East to the Washington D.C. area. I can't remember where you are living, but if it is close I would love to meet you and your wife and talk of Nottages. (This trip depends on how high gasoline prices rise.) I would fly back there and then my daughter and her children would drive back with me to Utah. (Her husband is on his 4th tour in Afghanistan!)
Thanks again for you correspondence.
Janet

In 1966 I transferred to the UN Secretariat and retired in 1992.
Thank you for telling me how you fit into the Henry & Ann (Collins) family.
I have prepared a narrative report starting with William Nottage b. 1673 who married Susan Wallace in 1691 who are the earliest forbears I have on your line. My email is ornottidge@nyc.rr.com if you reply to that address I will forward the report to you. It may increase your knowledge of your own line. As you see we adopted a slightly different spelling of the name but our family definitely comes form earlier Nottages!
I look forward to your email.
Richard

Richard, Thanks for your reply and your pedigree. You have surpassed me by several generations. My line from Willam Nottage and Susannah Wade is Henry b.1772 in Anstey, then his son Henry Nottage b. 1812 and married to Ann Collins who was from Wimbish, Essex, then Jordan b. 1840 then his son also a Henry born 1861 (He came to America in the 1880's) then comes my grandfather Albert Edward born in Acton in 1884 born before they came to the USA. Then my father who was Harry, born in Laramie, Wyo. 1906. Do any of those Henry's (that seems to be their favorite name, which is sometimes a bit confussing when doing research) tie into your line? When did you family come to the USA or were you the 1st generation? Jordan, my great great granfather had 3 brothers David, Daniel and Henry that came along with their mother Ann Collins and a younger brother William. I would love to find out that back far enough our lines tie in together.I can't verify Henry b.1702 and married to Elizabeth Feast was my ancester. I guess I need to take a genealogy trip to England.
Janet

Dear Janet, I am directly descended from Thomas chr. 29 July 1681 in Great Bardfield, Essex. Thomas was the son of Thomas b. 26 June 1656 in Thaxted, Essex who married Mary Johnson in 1676. This Thomas was the son of Thomas chr. 5 October 1623 in Saffron Walden, Essex who married Frances Whiting in 1653. This Thomas was the son of Henry chr. 1 October 1577 in Saffron Walden, Essex who married Alice Cornell on 2 October 1610 in Saffron Walden. Henry was the son of Robert b. about 1550 who married Clemence Onion on 24 July 1566 in Saffron Walden.
I was born in England but never went to Nuthampstead. Now I live in New York.
Do you know the "Descendants of Josiah Nottage" by I Lewis Burke. I have photocopied the Nottage parts from a microfiche Call # 1697880. If you do not know of this, look it up the next time you go to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I made copies in the New York FHL.
Would you let me know the line from Jordan to you?
I have tried to piece the family together by scrutinizing all the Nottages in Ancestry.com's Public Family trees but have difficulty joining the Essex and Hertfordshire branches. We can not go back far enough to connect with any certainty but I would not be surprised to find we are remote cousins.

Richard

Dear Richard,
Thank you for the information on the Nottage's. My information is almost the same as yours except when it got to William Nottage (Henry's father ) I had his birth as 17 Aug. 1746 md. to Susannah Wade. I think I got Henry Nottage and Elizabeth Feast from Ancestry and don't have it verified, but it is the same as yours. I didn't have William 1673 or Susan Wallace. You go back farther than I do. I come from Henry Nottage and Ann Collin's son Jordan Nottage. Henry would be my 3rd great grandfather. What about you? Are you living in England? Have you been to Nuthamstead? I live close to Salt Lake City where I have done a lot of research on this family. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a wonderful family history library in that city. It is about 45 minutes from my home. I wish we could tie our research together. Let me know if you think we are related. My maiden name was Nottage and I am from the Nottage's that settled in southeastern Wyoming. They were a family of locomotive engineers, back in the day when the USA had many passenger railroad lines. Do you know anything about Sarah Martin's family. I think her father was Riohard Martin, but I don't know for sure.

Sincerely,
Janet "Nottage" Lassiter
Dear Janet, My information is as follows:
Henry b. 1812 married Ann Collins on 18 April 1833.
Henry's father Henry b. 1772 married Sarah Martin on 27 May 1795. Henry's father William b. 1738 married Susannah Wade on 20 October 1764. William's father Henry b. 1702 married Elizabeth Feast on 29 July 1726. Henry's father William b. about 1673 married Susan Wallace on 20 October 1691.
Is this your family? If it is, can you go any further back? And can you let me know how you connect with Henry & Ann?
I do not know whether I am related to this branch. I have collected five Nottage families with more than 100 members who I believe are related, two with more than 300 members, apart from my own. The records do not seem to go back far enough to prove whether we are all on family or separate!

Richard

Sure wish I could help you with your query. I don't have anything would seemly tie into those names. Herts. is where my Nottage came from too. You don't tie into Henry Nottage b. 1812 in Barkway, Hertfordshire do you? Three of Henry's sons came to the USA and also his wife Ann b. 1815 in Wimbish. Love to hear from you about any of the Hertfordshire Nottage's, they probably are all related somehow.
Janet

"The Fabric of Our World; My Family Story" by Dennis Bruce Nottage -

Thomas Nottage, a Quaker carpenter of Great Bardfield, had three sons; Josias, born in 1678, Thomas (1681), and William (1684). Josias married in 1701, and he and his wife, and William, then left for the New World, sailing first to Halifax in Nova Scotia. They seem to have moved between there and Boston, trading along the coast between the two towns, for in 1724 the township records of Boston note that "Mr Knottage" (presumably Josias) refused his son Josiah, who had been born in about 1705, permission to marry. In the event, he did, at least three times, and as two of his sons also married several times, his descendants are now to be found in many parts of the United States. The connection with Nova Scotia appears to have ended shortly before the War of Independence, when Josiah arrived in Boston in his sloop "Unity", followed two years later by his third wife Jane, whom he ahd married in Boston in 1747 and their three children, in his schooner "Elizabeth", named after his first wife Elizabeth Wallis. His uncle William had died in Halifax in 1758, and the family now spread southwards, first to New York and then to Ohio, and ultimately westwards to California.

James

James, I would like if you could send some backup sources to me for some of this as I am not finding anything about Josiah in Great Bardfield. dawndmd@charter.net

I did, however, find that Josiah's (b. abt 1705) first wife, I believe, was not Elizabeth, but was Sarah Grant. They married in Boston, Suffolk, on January 20, 1724. Found in the Massachusetts Marriages, 1633-1850. He didn't marry Elizabeth until August 4, 1726 in Boston, Suffolk.

What was the name of the wife who you believe came with Josiah b. 1678 and his brother, William, to the New World? Also, did he travel from England to the New World on his Sloop and how did you find out about the sailing vessel? did their brother, Thomas stay behind in England? Also, do you know Thomas, the father's, wife's name in England?

Do you have any documents that show from England the connection between Josiah, Thomas or William and their father Thomas?

I am just wondering how you found out about this and want to make sure the connection is backed up with sources before I add this to my tree. Please email me anything you can to dawndmd@charter.net. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Dawn

I've heard of research that indicates that this supposition, i.e., Josiah and William Nottage coming to America from Essex, may not be true. It says that both stayed in England, eventually dying there.
Additionally, the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, really didn't exist until 1749.
A Josiah Nottage did come to Halifax from Boston with the first wave of New Englanders attempting to colonize the place. But this was probably the man born in Boston or England around 1700-1705 and married to Jane Remote, his 2nd wife.
Do you have sources on the theory that the first Nottage in America was Josiah from Great Bardsfield?

I am a decendent of Josiah Nottage born abt. 1700, son of Josias Nottage b. 1678. Josias came to Halifax, Canada with his brother William Nottage b. 1684 then to Boston sometime in 1702-1705. I believe they were originally from Essex, England.

Josiah Nottage b. abt 1700 father was Thomas Nottage b. 1656 from Thaxted and Great Bardfield, Essex, England.

I have found the above information from other Nottage Message boards. I have proof of most of my ancestors leading up to Josiah Nottage b. abt. 1700. I have however, been unable to provide proof of the ancestors above beyond Josiah. If anyone has documentation or other information to share, please email me at dawndmd@charter.net to connect.
