Re: Samuel Nutt of Maine

Margaret Nutt, the mother of Samuel Illustrious Nutt (1833-1879), was married four times. She was born in 1804 as MARGARET BENNETT, the daughter of Phineas S. BENNETT and his wife, Sarah (Sanger) Bennett. In 1850, Phineas and Sarah were living in Troy, Maine, just a few houses away from the farm of Titus Rogers (where their grandson, Samuel I. Nutt, was working).

Margaret married 1st, in Troy, 1822, JOHN BICKMORE Jr., b. Friendship, Maine, 16 October 1782, d. Troy, Maine, 23 December 1846. They were divorced by 1829, and it doesn't appear as though there were any children born to that marriage.

Margaret then married 2nd, c1830, ALONZO NUTT, b. Freeport, Maine, c1808, the son of Rev. Samuel and Abigail (Todd) Nutt. Alonzo died in Troy on 2 June 1836, age about 28. Two children by this marriage: (a) Sarah Ann Nutt [b. Troy, 28 Jan. 1832, m. in Etna, ME, 17 Sept. 1849, Alvin Coulson], and (b) Samuel Illustrious Nutt [b. Troy, 4 November 1833].

Margaret married 3rd, in Troy, 1839, NISBET DAMON, b. Plymouth, Maine, 26 April 1809, d. in Plymouth, 6 April 1862, age 53. He had been previously married, and had two sons by that earlier union. Margaret and Nisbet were living in Plymouth, Maine in 1840, but later moved to nearby Etna. By 1850, they had separated/divorced, and Margaret was living in Etna with her 2 Damon daughters and next door to her married daughter, Sarah Ann (Nutt) Coulson. Margaret's two daughters by Nisbet Damon were: (c) Lydia A. Damon [b. Plymouth, ME, 8 June 1842, d. Etna, ME, 27 Aug. 1924; m. in Etna, 1864, Seth Eldridge Woodman]; and (d) Mary J. Damon [b. Etna, ME, 1847; living in 1860].

Margaret was married 4th, in Plymouth, ME, 31 August 1851, to GEORGE PAINE, b. Maine, c1819. He was Margaret's junior by 15 years. In 1860, they appear to have been separated, but were back together again by 1870. The 1860 census of Plymouth shows Margaret Paine, age 56, living in that town with her daughters, Lydia Damon, age 16, and Mary Damon, age 12.

Margaret (Bennett) Bickmore Nutt Damon Paine died in Plymouth, Maine on 7 February 1884, age 80 years. She did not die in Hampden, Maine (as I had earlier indicated).

I should have looked at my notes before I posted the previous message. Samuel Nutt, b. 1833, was not the son of Illustrious Nutt, but rather, his nephew. Samuel was the child of Alonzo Nutt (c.1808-1836) and his wife, Margaret [maiden name unknown]. Alonzo was the younger brother of Illustrious Nutt, and a son of Rev. Samuel Nutt (1784-1872) by his first wife, Abigail (Todd) Nutt.

More to follow!

Col. David Nutt (1738-1797), father of Sarah (Nutt) Clough, was a younger brother of my 5-great-grandfather, William Nutt (1728-1801) of Derryfield, NH. I have much more information on him and his family.

Sarah was a first cousin to my 4-great-grandfather, Samuel Nutt (1768-1850) of Wolfeborough, NH, as well as to Rev. Samuel Nutt (1784-1872) of Troy, Maine and Wolfeborough. Rev. Samuel was the father of Illustrious Nutt and the grandfather of Samuel Nutt, b. Troy, Maine, 1833, later of Oconto, Wisconsin.
Janet:

I know that this is a LONG overdue response to you. However, I have been to Longwood many times. My first visit was when I was 19 years old. The tour guide denied that there was any male descendants let alone African American descendants of Haller and Julia Nutt. Thirty years since my first visit, I have garnered a lot of valuable historically documented information that supports my Nutt family genealogy.

Thanks for your sincere response to my query.

Maurice J.
Re: Dr. Haller Nutt - Longwood Plantation, Natchez, Mississippi- UPDATE

UPDATE:

My research has confirmed that I am the descendant of Haller Nutt, Jr. and NOT Calvin Routh Nutt. Calvin married / divorced Isabelle Nash - she had children from her first husband but none from Calvin Routh Nutt.

Haller Nutt, Jr. (1848-1899) in the 1880 Census is found living in Tensas Parish in Louisiana and the record indicates that he was "married" to Alice Williams who was African American. To there union they had two sons: Rush (1875) and Frank (1878). There is no other information concerning what happened to Alice Williams or her two sons. However, in the year of 1890 Haller Nutt, Jr. who was a farmer (my great grandfather) united with another African American woman named Annie Coleman. They had three children: Oliver Calvin Nutt (1890-1975) who was my grandfather; Pearl and Gertrude. Haller Nutt, Jr. died of a stomach ailment on December 10, 1899 in Vicksburg, MS with Annie Coleman and their children. In Haller Nutt, Jr.'s Will it states that he "leaves half of his family's reparations claim from the US Government for the lost of estates and property of his father Haller Nutt due to the Civil War to his brother S. Prentis Nutt (Knut) and the other half to Annie Coleman. This document is found in the MS Supreme Court records. Annie Coleman died between 1901-1909. Her children were cared for my friends - The Hogan Family according to the 1910 Census.

I have also found a great deal of information from the Nutt Family Collection in the Mississippi State History and Archives.

Maurice J.
Nutt Family from NJ/Busti NY - Claude S Nutt, Fannie E Nutt

Claude Nutt married my great-grandmother Fannie Davenport who was from NJ. I cannot find any information about my great grandfather Claude's family except that he originated in Busti, NY. He is listed on the 1880 U.S. Census though while he was 4 and living with Adelbert Eddy and his family. Names I found associated with Claude Nutt are Adelbert Eddy, Delilah Eddy (could be Delila) with a possible maiden name of Nutt. There are a lot of Nutt's in the area of Busti, NY but very little information. Any help is greatly apppreciated.
It's nice to hear from you. Dessie is my great-grandmother too, so I guess we are second cousins. My mom is Nora Nutt, Carlos's (Evelyn's brother) oldest daughter. Because she was so young when Carlos died, she lost track of her Nutt relatives and has been wondering about them.
I don't know much about Evelyn's family, just that she married Ward Fowler and had 2 daughters. Are you Dolly and Anne's daughter? My mom remembers them both and would like to know what became of her cousins.
Thank you so much for replying to my posting.
Jessica
