Hi this reponse is only 9 years later, but how can I get a copy of the album and pictures of the Nylin Shoe Store. My grandpa, Carl Nylin, Ben Nylin and I guess Roy? might be in those pics as well as Evelyn?

Dorothea “Dottie” Nylin Barnett

Dorothea “Dottie” Nylin Barnett died April 5, 2007 at Friends Care in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She was 96.

The daughter of Swedish immigrants, she was a graduate of the University of Minnesota in physical education. She taught at various locations in the United States and in Mexico City for one summer and was a recreation director for the USO in Hawaii during World War II. She had the distinction of being the first female USO worker in Honolulu after Pearl Harbor, arriving there in May 1942. She met her husband, Bill, in Honolulu and married in 1945. They returned “stateside” in 1949 to Lebanon, Ill., with the family now consisting of daughter Bette, and stepsons Peter and Mikal. She taught a wide variety of subjects besides physical education, including swimming and hula.

Dottie and her family moved to San Antonio, texas in 1957 and she resided there until 1995. She and her husband loved to travel and did so extensively.

In May of 1995 she moved to Dayton, Ohio and in 2000 she moved to Friends Care in Yellow Springs, Ohio to be near her daughter, Bette. She will be remembered at Friends Care for her many sayings: “I feel like a nickel half spent,” “4-0,” “Do you like your job or do you need to eat?” While at Friends she taught exercise classes and was still giving hula lessons. She loved being outside and going for a walk remained her favorite activity next to reading.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bette Kelley and Wayne Gulden; her grandson and his spouse, Trey Kelley and Kathy Stone; great granddaughter, Avery Stone, her stepson and his spouse, Mikal and Aggie Barnett and their children, Mike Jr. and Kathy, Maureen and Sean, Father Daniel, Sheila and Aaron, Patrick and Rebecca, and a host of great grandchildren in Washington State, her niece Mrs. Darold Strand of St. Louis, Mo., and two nephews, Peter and Danny Nylin of Minneapolis and their children.

Bette and Wayne would like to give their heartfelt thanks to everyone at Friends Care for creating a vibrant atmosphere for their residents as well as providing them with the utmost care in a loving environment.

Sure. I will get some pics together. However, I am moving in about 3 weeks, so I will get them out the begining of May. I know I have some of I have some old ones of Evie and Milton. One of them in their wedding clothes and one of Gustave and Clara in in front of the house on 9th street with all the kids. There's also some in the shoe store? I think...

I will make copies and send them to you.

Hi Wendy,
If your grandfather and my dad were cousins then
you and I would be 2nd cousins or something!? I would
love to see any pics you have. If you can copy them
and mail them to me at my cost of course, that would be
great. My mom and dad are both gone. Grandpa Carl, Great
Auntie Evelyn and Great Uncle Ben are all gone. I don't think I ever met Great Uncle Roy. Its hard to find real info anymore. I grew up in Stockton runningaround Nylin's Shoestore, met grandpa Carl maybe 20 times in my life. He was a cold type.... Loved your great grandma Evelyn!!!! She was such a sweetie. I will write again since room is gone

Hi Wendy,
Your grandfather Douglas and my dad Richard were close
since Richard Nylin spent a lot of time at Evelyn's home
on 9th street. My grandfather was Carl Nylin, brother of
Evelyn, Ben and Roy. We were not a close family at all
but Auntie Evelyn was always very kind to me and even though
the basement at her house was spooky, I loved playing pool
there! All of my relatives are deceased and I am trying to
piece family tree links and things like that.
Feels good to connect with someone who remembers the Nylin
family, lol. Thanks

Wow!! Yes, my grandfather's name is Douglas. He is doing well. Nyla used to live in Italy with her husband William Charles. They dicorced in the early '80's and now Nyla lives with her daughter Robin and her husband and 2 children. If you have any questions let me know. I'd be happy to hel pany way I can.

Thank you for your reply and sorry for your loss. I am writing a book about The Children's Country School in Los Gatos CA that I believe your father attended and hoped to interview him about his experiences.

What is your granfathers name? Doug? I think he and my father grew up together
on 9th St. with Evelyn. Nylaclare whom I have never met is Evelyn's daughter and she lived or lives in Italy with her family.. Sound familiar?

Hello, yes sorry about that. I am Carl Gustav Nylin's grand daughter. His son
Richard Frederick Nylin was my dad and he spent much of his life at Auntie Evelyn's house on 9th St. I guess his mom died rather young.
I visited as a child and loved Auntie Evelyn. My grandfather was rather cold
too and perhaps he got that from his mother? Uncle Ben was very kind to me
also. I don't have too many memories since the family wasnt very close.
I am Richard's only child. He is deceased also.

Hi sorry never replied. Haven't been to this site forever.
Yes, my dad, Richard Nylin was Carl Nylin's son and the Nylin's Shoe Store
in San Jose in store #1, my dad and mom ran the Nylin's Shoe Store in
Stockton. If you get this message I am very interested in finding some
info about my relatives, most are deceased and not a very close family.

Richard (Dick) Frederick Nylin whose father and uncle Ben owned Nylin's

Shoe Store was my dad. He is deceased. Around 1980.

I am searching for any info on Mildred E. Nylin (Newbern). Mildred married Emery Tilghman Newbern, and is listed in the CA Marriage Index 1960-85, and CA Birth Index 1905-1995, in Los Angeles, CA. Mildred Nylin Newbern is listed in the Massachusetts City directory. Emery was my grandfather,he died in Dade County, FL. I would greatly appreciate any info on their child (name unknown), or further info.

I am in the process of writing a book about a boarding school in Los Gatos, CA where Richard "Dick" Nylin attended. He was the son of Nylin's Shoe store owner who i believe was named Carl. I have been unable to locate Richard.

She married Robert Rush PEGRAM and moved to Chicago IL and had daughters Anna , Virginia, and Nancy.

Hello out there. It's been years since you've posed your original message, but you're G.A. Nylin's grand child? Horray!Gustave and Clara J. Holm had 4 children: Carl Gustav (b. 20 Mar 1910) Oscar Bernard (They called him Bernard) Roy Adolf(b. 1902) and my great grandmother Evelyn Ruth Amanda (B 30 Mar 1908)

They as a family lived in the 9th st house. Gustave built the house. We have copies of the property sales recipt. All the children were born and raised there, and then Evie raised my grandfather there, and died there and on the 4th of july 1992. I visited that house often and heard stories about Clara and Ruth. According to Evelyn, Ruth was not a nice woman, so much so that Evie began to hate her middle name.

I have pictures of the family (Clara about 3 years before she died) and Gustav in his shoe store. Please post further information
