I am not descended from this family, but I have acquired some documents related to the family of George and Rhoda Oaks of Carter County, TN. According to Census records, it appears George was the son of Jackson Oaks. I've found a number of Ancestry trees with Jackson Oaks in them, but none have George as a son.

If this is your family, please get in touch with me. I don't subscribe to the Oaks list, so my direct e-mail is TNGeneWhiz@gmail.com

Billie McNamara

Re: Daniel Samuel Oaks, NC to KY

Nila
I feel sure we have the same Daniel Samuel Oaks, and his son, James Oaks, 1829-1909 and second wife, Margaret Clark Petrey, 1843-1927. Both died in Howell County, MO. It appears James Oaks and family moved to Missouri between 1880 and 1885. They were living in Lincoln County, KY in the 1880 census. Our files vary for Margaret L Oaks, daughter of James and Martha C, I have Margaret L Oaks born 1872 in Lincoln County KY and married William H McClellan on 9 Jan 1898 Howell County, MO. I don’t have other information for Margaret L and William McClelland. However, I have Margaret Lela Mae Oaks, born Jun 1884 Lincoln County KY to James Franklin Oaks, 1848-1927 and Priscilla Powers, 1854-1932. James Franklin Oaks is son of Adam Oaks and Nephew of James Oaks, born 1829. This Margaret Lela Mae Oaks, I show marrying Willis Kidd 1903 in Lincoln County KY. I show six children: James Earl, 1904-1975 + (1) Rosa Carpenter, (2) Susie Neal; Ira Ervin, 1906-1975 + Ora Mae Kidd; Ludenia, 1907-1979 + Eugene Hodge; Elderberry, 1909-1994 + (1) Mary Frances Hodge, and (2) Samara Allen; Birdina, 1912-1962 + Charles L Hodge; and Claude, 1914-1982 + Martha Belle Griffin. While our information for Margaret Lela Oaks varies, I certainly have enough mysteries in the family tree to have errors; and you have Margaret Lela as GG G/M, I am very interested in your G G/P’s names.
Gene Martin
Re: Labon Oaks

I am attaching a summary of my files relating to Laban Oaks (Oakes). I am descended from him through his son, James McKinney Oaks (Oakes). I believe your Laban Oaks is probably a son of my Laban Oaks and a brother to James McKinney Oaks. I have looked for many years for proof, but I have not found it. Please review my notes regarding Laban Oaks on the Kentucky census records and, later, his son appearing on Tennessee census records. I would appreciate any additional information and/or follow-up from you or others who review this board.

Ancestors of James McKinney Oakes

Generation No. 1

1. James McKinney Oakes1,2, born June 03, 1795 in Halifax/Henry County, Virginia3,4; died January 16, 1841 in Coffee County, Tennessee in Beech Grove area near Norton branch of the Garrison fork of the Duck River5,6. He was the son of 2. Laban Oakes and 3. Susannah McKinney. He married (1) Jane B. Norton7,8 October 04, 1820 in From a family bible in the Priddy family (marriage location not documented)9,10. She was born May 02, 1796 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia11,12, and died October 17, 1848 in Union County, Mississippi (was a part of Tippah County until 1870)13,14. She was the daughter of Henry Wilson Norton and Frances Norton.

Notes for James McKinney Oakes:
James Oaks bought land from his father-in-law, Henry W. Norton, on April 8, 1830, in Bedford County, Tennessee, (later to be in Coffee County, Tennessee). From the deed description, this land was along the Norton Branch between the land of John Burk, John Branch, and ? Gibson.

Wade Oaks has a copy of James Oaks' will. It has Obadiah Freeman, and his son, Isaac W. Oaks, as executors. Attesting were Thomas A. Brown and Henry Hamaker. It leaves the plantation known as the Douglas place, on the Norton branch of the Garrison Fork of the Duck River in Coffee County, Tennessee, to his family. It also mentions the disposal of the property known as the Harp place, no location given. It is dated 1/7/1841. Also have copies of several land transactions for James Oaks and Hesikiah Oaks. Earlier records are in Bedford County which was shortly afterward absorbed into the new Coffee County. James bought land from Henry W. Norton, his father-in-law, and also from Hesikiah Oaks, his uncle and also the executor for James Burke, from whom Hesikiah had earlier bought land. These purchases were in 1830 and 1831. Names are spelled Oakes on some documents and Oaks on others. In 1842, Isaac W . Oaks, as executor for James Oaks, sold some of the land to William McDaniel. Witnesses were Meredith Norton, Robert B. Carlile, and an illegible name. This should have James Oaks' death between the will date and the 1842 land sale date. The date cam from a family Bible in the Priddy family, descendants of Frances Oaks Buchanan. The Priddy Bible is in the possession of Juliet Adams Wills, a descendant. Original purchase from Henry Norton adjoined land of James Burke, William Norton, and ? McBride.

James Oakes' Will transcribed from copy:

I, James Oakes of the County of Coffee and State of Tennessee do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills heretofore made by me. And first I direct that my body be decently interred in said county in a manner suitable to my condition in life. As to such wordly estate as it has pleased God to intrust me with I dispose of the same as follows. First I direct that my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as possible after my decease with the first monies that come into the hands of my executors. Secondly I do give and bequeath to my beloved wife two horses, two cows and calves, all the household and kitchen furniture, a yoke of oxen and cart and what few hogs I have to be her right and property to help raise my children. Thirdly I bequeath to my beloved wife the plantation known by the Douglas place to reside and raise the children on for fifteen years after which time it may be sold or divided among my lawful heirs. I devise that the Harp place be sold as soon as it can be done for cash. But if there should not come money enough into the hands of the executors after collecting my debts and selling all the stock except which I have given to my wife then and in that case I want the Harp place sold to the best advantage and the proceeds applied to paying off the debts and if it should not be sold I want it rented out and it sold or divided among my heirs when the other land is. Further I advise for the Black woman Lucretia to be hired out after the expiration of this present year and the yellow boy Jim as soon as he is large enough both to be hired out yearly until the land is sold or divided among the heirs and I want my beloved wife to keep the other little girl named Rose until the division of the land to help raise the children and then all the negroes and their increase and the proceeds of the hire and the proceeds arising from the sale or rent of the Harp place if there should be any all equally divided among my heirs.

I do hereby appoint ordain and make my esteemed neighbor and friend Obadiah Freeman and my beloved son Isaac excecutors of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I James Oaks the said testator have to this my will set my hand and seal this the seventh day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty one. Signed and published in the presence of us who have subscribed in the presence of the testator and of each other.

Attest James Oakes (Seal)
Thos. A. Brown
Henry Hamaker

It could be coincidence, but this will mentions the "Harp place." His son, James Franklin Oaks, later marries Rachel Harp in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, near where his mother and siblings settle after his death.

1820 census of Bedford County, Tennessee, shows only Joseph Oaks and his family. James, Laban, or Hezikiah Oaks (Oakes) were not recorded on the 1820 census anywhere.

1830 census of Bedford County, Tennessee, shows James Oaks on page 125 age 30-40 with 3 males under age 5 and 1 age 5-10. Females were 1 age 30-40, 1 age 20-30, 1 age 5-10, and 1 under age 5. He is near H. W. Norton and family. Hezikiah Oaks and family are in the vicinity.

1840 Census of Coffee County, Tennessee, shows Jas Oakes age 40-50 with 1 male 15-20 and 3 males 10-15. Obadiah Freeman is shown as a neighbor. Females are 2 age 40-50, 1 age 10-15, and 2 age 5-10. Hesikiah Oakes and family are nearby but in Bedford County. His age shows 70-80.

Census records beginning in 1850, after James death, show family in northeastern Mississippi.

First land purchase entry for Jane Oaks in old Tippah County, now Union County, was the purchase of the south half of section 32, township 6, range 4 east from Thomas and Elizabeth Woods on 11/7/1845. The last entries were when she sold a quarter of a section to son-in-law, Levi Thomas, on 1/13/1847; half a quarter of a section to son-in-law, John Gammel, on 2/23/1847; and half a quarter of a section to son, John Wesley Oaks, on 2/26/1847.

Isaac W. Oaks as executor for James Oaks sold land, described but no acreage given, to William McDaniel in a deed recorded in Coffee County, Tennessee, on July 30, 1842. Witnesses were Meredith Norton, Robert B. Carlile, and Charley Mo?eck.

Some background historical notes of interest: The nation was in the midst of the "Panic of 1837" during the period of James McKinney Oakes' death and his family's move to northeast Mississippi. President Andrew Jackson refused to renew the charter of the national bank. The money was dispersed to various state banks that began to loan in a speculative manner, especially on land. This created a wildly inflationary economic period with unstable crop prices. President Jackson eventually stabilized the situation and is the only president who completely paid off the national debt. It was the mid 1840s before the nation began to recover. Also, President Jackson signed the "Indian Removal Act" in 1830. This started the treaties to purchase Indian lands east of the Mississippi and the removal of most tribes to the west. This opened up lands in north Mississippi and Alabama for settlement.

More About James McKinney Oakes:
Burial: Coffee County, Tennessee15,16
Census: 1830, Bedford County, TN page 125, line 26
Residence: 1838, Coffee County, TN District 2, 300 acres valued at $3000

More About Jane B. Norton:
Burial: Pleasant Grove Methodist Church-eastern Union County, Mississippi17,18

Generation No. 2

2. Laban Oakes19,20, born Abt. 1763 in Orange County, Virginia21,22; died Bet. 1811 - 1820 in probably in Kentucky. He was the son of 4. James Oakes and 5. ?. He married 3. Susannah McKinney April 04, 1793 in Halifax County, Virginia23,24.
3. Susannah McKinney25,26. She was the daughter of 6. James McKinney.

Notes for Laban Oakes:
James Oakes will gave 25L to Laban, 25L to Hesikiah, $1 to Josiah, and the bulk of his property to the younger son, James, by a later marriage. This was in Henry County, Virginia. Records show Laban buying land from his father in Pittsylvania County. Later records show land bought in Halifax County, Virginia. He married in 1793 in Halifax County and later sold land in Halifax County in 1795. He also sold land on 7/20/1795 in Henry County, Virginia, to Samuel Lane of Dinwiddie County. Witnesses were Archibald Murphy, M. Kelley, and Dutton Lane. Pittsylvania County was formed from Halifax County in 1766. Henry County was formed from Pittsylvania County in 1776. Rockingham County, North Carolina, adjoins these counties across the state line to the south.

Henry County, Virginia, Deed Book V, page 71, dated 9/9/1792, James Oakes of Pittsylvania County to Laban Oakes of the same county, for 300 lbs. -- 100 acres in Henry County, Virginia, located on the south side of the Smith River.......

Abstracts of Henry County, Virginia Deed Books V & VI:
Pg. 29. Dutton Lane was a Baptist minister and married to Elizabeth Oakes, daughter of Charles Oaks and Sarah Haley. Archibald Murphy was married to the daughter of Daniel McKinney.)

The 1790 federal census for Virginia and the area that became Tennessee were lost; however, Laban Oaks was in Virginia after that per marriage and land records.

There is no record of Laban Oaks on the 1800 census; however, the federal census records for Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and other areas were lost.

The 1810 federal census of Tennessee was lost except for Rutherford and part of Grainger counties.

A Laban (Labon) (Ladoc) Oaks was shown on the 1810 Federal Census of Logan County, Kentucky, page 186 and in a Barren County, Kentucky, court record in 1809. This Laban is age 26-44 as is his wife. There are 4 males under age 10 and 1 age 11-15. There are 3 females under age 10, 1 female age 10-15, and 1 female age 16-25. Hampton McKenney is a neighbor on the 1810 census. Hampton McKenney is later shown buying land in the 1830s in Madison and Macaupin, Illinois. He is on the 1830 census of Madison County, Illinois, and the 1840 census of Macaupin County, Illinois. Logan and Barren counties are just above the Tennessee line. This could not be the Laban in Illinois who was born in 1802, but it could be the Laban from Virginia who was born about 1763. The Laban in Illinois could be his son.

There is a William Norton on the 1820 census of Russelville, Logan County, Kentucky.

I can not find Laban Oaks (Oakes) on the 1820 census.

Laban Oaks, born 1802 in Tennessee, married to Mary Berthena is buried in Friendship Cemetery in McDonough County, Illinois. This Laban is shown on census records in the area beginning in 1830 in Pike County, later in Hancock County, and later in McDonough County as late as 1880. An Isaac Oaks was nearby in 1830. Laban and Berthena lived near Charles Washington Parker and wife, Rebecca Oaks Trowell Parker. Mr. Parker's birth was Bedford County, Tennessee (same area as the Oaks) in 1811. Rebecca was born in Anderson County, Tennessee, in 1818. They married in Marion County, Tennessee, in 1840.

Obadiah S. Freeman married Nancy Clark 1/30/1842 in Hancock County, Illinois. An Obadiah Freeman was a neighbor to James McKenney Oakes in Coffee County, Tennessee, in 1840, and also served as an executor of his will.

A Laban Oaks married Sarah Stapp in 8/15/1823 in Jefferson County, Alabama. By age, this could be the same Laban who later appears in Illinois, but I have no other information.

I have been unable to directly connect these two possibly separate Labans to our line.

Laban's son, James McKinney Oaks, appears in Bedford (later becomes Coffee) County, Tennessee, on census and land records beginning about 1830. He is near his uncle, Hezekiah Oaks, and his father-in-law, Henry Wilson Norton.

Marriage Notes for Laban Oakes and Susannah McKinney:
Surety was James McKenney. Susannah signed own consent. Minister was Thomas Dodson.

Child of Laban Oakes and Susannah McKinney is:
1	i. He probably stayed there the rest of his life. Charles died in the late 1750's or early 1760's, probably in Orange County. The earliest record was in a land record dated November 18, 1735. By 1737, Charles had surveyed for himself, 400 acres of new land. In July 1736, he was accused of trespassing by a Henry Willis. In September 1736, John Cuddin claimed Charles owed him two pounds for a mare he sold him. Both cases were dismissed. In 1738 he appeared on a delinquent tax list in Orange County. Immigration records show John Oakes and his wife, Rachel, arriving in Virginia from England in 1702. "The World Book of Oakes" published by Halbert's Family Heritage of Bath, Ohio, provides from Cavaliers & Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Grants, Volume 3, Richmond, Virginia State Library, 1979, page 61, Ship's Passenger Lists the names John Oakes and Rachel Oakes arriving in Virginia in 1702. This may indicate that John and Rachel were born in England and immigrated here after his father. There is a will record referring to John Oakes dated 1670, most likely the father, John Oakes, born 1640.

Land: From the Library of Virginia on-line, Land Grants:

Land: To all et:a Wheras et:a Now know ye that I the sd. I have a Great Grandmother whose name was spelled Odrie, Andrew and Audrey on 3 different years of Census Records, her name was Audrey so one out of three got it right.
I have a Labon,Laban Oaks in my family also. My email is krazy2250@hotmail.com if you would like to get in contact would really appreciate it.

Lisa

POW/MIA Korean War OAKS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Philadelphia County, PA as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: JOSEPH STEPHEN OAKS
Born:1929 Caucasian
Date of loss:20 July 1950 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I forgot to point out that it appears 2 brothers (Oaks) married 2 sisters (Bare).
In the 1840 Census for Botetourt Co, VA, there is a David Bare with wife and 8 children, 6 of whom are girls. Their age groups make it possible for these to be Susan Bair(Bare) and Sarah Ann Bear(Bare).

N Burnett

Re: Oaks/Oakes Family

I am trying to research a family line for my husband who is related to Mortimer Oaks and his wife Sarah Ann Bare (Bair, Bear). They married 2 Jan 1849 in Botetourt Co, VA. Also on 14 Oct 1850 in Botetourt Co, VA, Rice T Oaks married Susan Bear (Bair, Bare). Earlier in 1850 Rice T Oaks was in Botetourt living or working on the Snodgrass farm in Botetourt area per 1850 Census. Listed age was 22, carpenter. 1860 Census for Floyd Co, VA, shows Rice F Oaks (should be Rice T Oaks) married, wife Susan, 3 children (WJ, Jno R, Dora S). Believe these are your people. I should point out that William J seems to keep the initial J.

We currently believe Mortimer and Rice T were brothers. Possible parents were Rice Oaks and Patience Sudderth (Sudderth) of Albermarle Co, VA, married 24 June 1823. In the 1830 census the family is listed under the name of Rice Oaks. The ages of oldest male and female would correspond to that of Rice and Patience as does the age os the 2 sons to known ages of Mortimer (b about 1824) and Oaks T (b about 1828). Still need to document this working premise.

Could you give me particulars about the Russellville Community Cemetery?
Hope this helps you. N. Burnett

Oaks/Oakes Family of VA, TN, TX, OK

My gg-grandfather was William C. (Casper) Oaks he married Rebecca Dunn they are
listed in the 1870's Census in Witt's Foundry, Jefferson, TN, in a household
with or next to Julia Dunn. In the 1880's Census they are living in Hamblen
County, TN. Their children are Laura F. Oaks; Carrie B. Oaks; Jim W. Oaks; and
John M. Oaks. In every Census William and Rebecca's ages are reversed, so that
they are two years a part. They later moved to Texas and had two more children
Walter T. Oaks and Ollie Casper Oaks. They later moved to Oklahoma. William
died in 1931 in Ardmore, Carter, OK and Rebecca died in 1932 in Ardmore, Carter,
OK. They both are buried in the Lone Grove Cemetery but with no marker. I
confirmed this with the funeral home Harvey Bros. In the Ardmore newspaper it
said that William was a retired preacher of the Christian Church and a retired
store owner. With all this info and rambling, my question is that I am trying
to figure
out who his father was. I almost want to believe that it is Rice Thomas Oaks
married to Susan Bear/Blair; if not this might have been his uncle, because in
the 1870 and 1880 Census he does not live that far from Rice in each census. I
do not have actual proof, but if any one is familiar with this Oaks/Oakes family
line and would like to share any info I would gladly appreciate hearing from
you.
Sincerely,
Debbie Oaks Hambrick
This Samuel Oaks stuff gets really tricky. There is a Samuel b. 1848 who is the son of James Oaks and Mary Polly Napier. Then there is his nephew, Samuel Oaks b. 1858, who is the son of James Oaks Jr. (also son of James Oaks and Mary Polly Napier). I spent the better part of the day figuring this out. BTW, I am also looking for info specifically on the Samuel b. 1848. He is my wife's gggrandfather.

This is an old post but here goes...
Bernard 'Oaks' was born Bernard Ochs in 1826 in the village of Moos in Baden Germany. He came to America with his parents Augustus Ochs and Theresia Friedmann and six siblings on the ship 'Camilla' which landed in New York on 22 Oct 1847. The 'Ochs' family became the 'Oaks' family in America (the pronunciation is the same). Jennie was the nickname for Virginia Campbell. Bernard and Virginia are buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
