Thanks Larry. Your thoughts mirror mine. I now have a copy of Michael Oberle's will where he calls his wife Christina Barbara.

The deed records are from the digital images that are on-line at www.lancasterdeeds.com. These are likely at least third generation deed books since they are typed.

The deed from deed book N, page 446 (27 Sep 1764) calls Michael Oberlin's wife Elizabeth. In the second deed book entry, book N, page 450 (21 Oct 1773) she is still called Elizabeth and the signature is identified as Elizabeth (she made her mark). It is likely that the two were recorded together and perhaps the clerk made the change.

Re: Michael Oberlin m. ?? Zwecker

I believe he married only once to a Christina Barbara Zwecker. (Also noted in Ancestry and descendants of Hans Wendell Zwecker).

Is see in the deed records you mention the questioned Elizabeth. Could it be a transcription error from the original document? I believe the only place the Elizabeth Oberlee shows up is in Wendell's indenture of 1774. Therefore, my reason why only one Zwecker wife:

Michael Oberlin marries Christina Barbara Zwecker in 1742

In the will record of Margaret Zwecker 1771 (Wendell's wife), she states her daughter Christina (wife of Michael Oberly).

There are Michael Oberlin will record documents dated 1787 & 1791 that continue to include Michael's wife as Christina and Christina Barbara.

It also appears that Christina did not have a sister named Elizabeth. Oft times when losing a wife early a husband would marry a older or younger sister.

Christina Oberlin (d 1791) is buried next to Michael at the Bergstrasse cemetery.

Just some of my dis-jointed thoughts on the subject.

In the Lancaster Deed Records dealing with the distribution of Wendel Zwecker's estate (Deed Book N, page 447-448 and 450-451) it states that Wendel left three children -- Nathaniel alias Ignatius (only son), Elizabeth (wife of Michael Oberly) and Magdalen (wife of Anthony Hinkle). These records are dated 1764 and 1773.

In the church records of Trinity Lutheran, New Holland (mid 1700's) she is called Christina Barbara nee Zweckin.

Did Michael Oberlin marry one girl named Zwecker or two?

Mary Ella Oberlin Elkin, Indiana Co., PA

I purchased a bag of miscellaneous correspondence which I found at an antique shop in Georgia. Among the papers are two letters addressed to Mrs. M. Ella Elkin, Indiana, Pennsylvania. One of the letters to Ella is from her mother, postmarked 1907. The other is from another family member, Marie, dated 1909. Ella's mother mentions Linus in her letter. Indiana County, PA census records show M. Ella Elkin and her husband, James H. Elkin listed along with a son named Linus Elkin. Familysearch.org gives the information James H. Elkin married Mary Ella Oberlin in 1881. Mary Ella was born in 1861 in PA and was found in the 1930 census living with her son, Linus. Her parents were William and Anna Oberlin, and one of her siblings was named Curtis who was also mentioned in her mother's letter. Any family members who are interested in having this correspondence can e-mail me at RDHnGa@aol.com. I will be happy to send it along.

Sheri,

There is a John C. Oberlin in the 1910 and 1920 census in Perry County, Missouri. He is married to an Annie and looks like they had (7) children. Looks also like he was born probably in Switzerland and came to America in 1874 and was naturalized a citizen. All this info is in the census records. His parents also seem to be born in Switzerland.

Hope this helps
