OBREGON, EUGENE ARNOLD; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient - Korea

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

Note: This is not my ancestry. I have NO additional information. I am just passing along information that may be useful.

**Awarded Posthumously.

OBREGON, EUGENE ARNOLD

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, Company G, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein.). Place and date: Seoul, Korea, 26 September 1950. Entered service at: Los Angeles, Calif. Born: 12 November 1930, Los Angeles, Calif. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company G, in action against enemy aggressor forces. While serving as an ammunition carrier of a machine gun squad in a marine rifle company which was temporarily pinned down by hostile fire, Pfc. Obregon observed a fellow marine fall wounded in the line of fire. Armed only with a pistol, he unhesitating dashed from his covered position to the side of the casualty. Firing his pistol with 1 hand as he ran, he grasped his comrade by the arm with his other hand and, despite the great peril to himself dragged him to the side of the road. Still under enemy fire, he was bandaging the man's wounds when hostile troops of approximately platoon strength began advancing toward his position. Quickly seizing the wounded marine's carbine, he placed his own body as a shield in front of him and lay there firing accurately and effectively into the hostile group until he himself was fatally wounded by enemy machine gun fire. By his courageous fighting spirit, fortitude, and loyal devotion to duty, Pfc. Obregon enabled his fellow marines to rescue the wounded man and aided essentially in repelling the attack, thereby sustaining and enhancing the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Burial: Los Angles, CA in Calvary Cemetery

1930 - 1950

Additional Information and cemetery monument photo:

Re: my mother's maiden name-Obregon

My grandfather was John and he was from Monterey. My grandmother I believe had the maiden (family) name of Rae. Her full namae as I knew it was Amalia Rae Obregon and my grandfather may have had Daniel in his family names because I have an uncle Daniel (Danny) Obregon who is about 60 or so now. My mother was born in 1944 (an identical twin). I do have an uncle JOhn who is a Jr. so I guess I should check a little further to find my grandfather's full name. I think my grandfather would have likely been born around the late 1890's or early 1900's. PLease continue to send any info you have as will I. My cousin Tim Obregon is also researching. Most all my mother's family lives in the Grand Forks ND, Minneapolis, MN and such areas. One sister in Canada.

Hello my Name is Eliazar (O.B.) Obregon. What caught my eye about your message is that your grandmother was from El Paso, Texas. My family is from El Paso also and My Grandfather (Demetrio Obregon) immigrated from Mexico (Durango Mexico) during the Mexican civil war in the early 1900's. I do not know if any other family members (brothers or sisters) might have come over with him or not. If any of this helps you please let me know as I also am trying to trace my family history.

Here are some names for you to see if they may help.

Demetrio Obregon 1890-1956 (grandfather)
Jauna Diaz Obregon 1894-1968 (grandmother)
Lazaro Obregon 1930-2001 (father)
Daniel Obregon 1927?-1978 (uncle)

Francisco Obregon 1922-1993 (uncle) lived in whittier CA. for last 30 years,

Hello,
I have often wondered how many more "Obregon's" existed being that our surname is so rare but, having visited many message boards, I have found that the name is rather wide-spread among the America's!

I know that my father and his father were originally from Cuba and that my grandfather (dad's dad) was a Sergeant in the Cuban army in the late 50's. I also know that my father's family had a plot of land in Cuba known as "La Colonia" prior to Fidel Castro's regime. I believe they were from Holguin or Oriente (I'm not to sure.) I am just looking for anyone who can help me trace THIS root from the widespread "Obregon" tree! Thank You!

Jorge Luis Obregon

Hi, John: Thanks for responding to my inquiry about your Obregon side of the family. Also, I appreciate the Descendants chart of Abelardo Obregon. I will look into my records to see if there is some connection somewhere.
It is interesting to note the "Jesus Obregon" names in the family. My Obregon line also included some "Jesus Obregon" names. Although that is quite a common Mexican name, nonetheless, these parents had the tradition of naming their children after a common ancestor or "padrino or madrina".
I have been communicating with a 'distant cousin', found also through the website. Her husband's name is Tony Vargas and his mother is the Obregon in the family. Her father's name was Hilario Obregon and her grandfather's name was Jesus Obregon. This Jesus Obregon was married to a Ramona Villa.
Her email address is "sevargas@attbi.com (Susan Vargas). I live in Mesa, Arizona and a bit older then you, 68 y.o. Tony and Susan Vargas live there in Los Angeles, California. Another 'distant cousin' , who also found me through my genealogical entries to Ancestry File, also lives in Oxnard, California. His name is Frank Sanchez and his father's mother was from the Obregon line.
Somewhere in there, we will make all our connections. Thanks again for your information, Margarita.

Efectivamente, nuestros ancestros vivieron hace muchos años en tierras cántabras.
He estado estudiando mi arbol genealogico, y he conseguido llegar al año c. 1415; al parecer en un pueblo llanmado entrambasaguas, en cantabria.
Houston Obregon who wants to learn about family

My name is Barbie, yes like the doll, and I live in Houston. I graduated from U of H in the Spring with a BA in English- concentration in Creative Writing-and a minor in Latin. I am working on my novel, tentatively entitled THE WILL. My novel is about aunt Angelica Obregon who died when I was 15. She was in her late 20's, and although she was born with Down's Syn., Texas Children's Hospital made a medical error that landed her in wheelchair. It is all true, but I am reliving it through her father's-my grandfather-perspective.
My problem is that I met my grandfather Manuel Obregon when he died in San Antonio. He had lost all contact with my dad Joe Manuel Obregon and my 3 aunts. I do know that my grandpa was a singer. In fact, he sang himself to death on his last night alive. My dad says he hated his father, so my information is limited. He did say that my creative capabilities come from the Obregons. Are any of you writers or any type of artists?
I will provide a quick name reference to see if any of you are directly related to me or know something about my grandpa.

THIS IS WHAT I KNOW:
3rd generation
I am Barbie Obregon-born June 5th 1976 in Houston
My 2 brothers: Joe-20 and David Abraham-10

2nd generation
My dad: Joe Manuel Obregon-born Dec1956
My aunts, dad's sisters: Alejandra (eldest), Irene, and Angelica (passed away 10 years ago); they were born in Houston, but grew up in Mexico and traveled back and forth.

3rd generation
My grandpa: Manuel Obregon (passed away a few months after my aunt Angelica. He died in San Antonio. He has several brothers and sisters: Chalin is one, but there must be like 9 all together.
My grandma: (Divorced and remarried) Esperanza Juarez

If anyone has any info, you can email me at: barbie_la_pura_verdad@hotmail.com
or if you would just like to get familiarized, I would also enjoy that.
Obregon from Puerto Rico

I too am very interested in the ancestors subject and I hope to help with the following information: My father's name was Pablo Obregon. He was born in 1910 in Puerto Rico. He used this name but that name belonged to my grandmother Marcelina Obregon who I never met and I believe died in the 40's. Her sister was Margarita Obregon and there are still some cousins left in Puerto Rico. Perhaps one or two. My father used to say that she came from Spain and that they came to Puerto Rico as stowaways in a ship bound for Puerto in the 1800s. I have absolutely no record of her. My mother once saw a picture of her, but that pictures got lost somewhere. Perhaps, David, if you are reading this reply can tell me where I can obtain more information about the Obregon family in Spain since that is all I know. Margarita your name caught my attention because of my aunt's name.
Well these past messages are very interesting indeed. Its' good to hear from you all and I guess somehow we are related. I know that my ancestors came to Mexico but I was unsure from where. David so I guess you're in Spain. I know some Spanish but it's what we here in Texas called Tex-Mex. It's not pure spanish it's a mixture of english and spanish together. I can read it but some words I have trouble. To Marina I'm unsure of my great grandfather's brothers...it could be that there is a link here. If you any of you would like you can contact me direct to my email and I would be happy to tell you more and as well to learn more.

Hello, I´ve been reading with deep interest your messages. I´m an Obregon from the other side, I mean from Europe. I live in the Valle de Cayon, which is the origin of the familly. I think that my ancestors have been there for more than 1000 years.....and I´m still there.
Anyways, just wanted to let Luana knows that the origins of our familly is in a little country in the north of Spain called Cantabria. There are plenty of Obregon here and many towers and Castles from the familly. I´m researching in the medieval familly tree of the familly which is quite hard to do actually.
One of the branches of the Obregon here is that of a village called Llerana in the Valley of Carriedo. This is the people who cross the sea to Mexico. Maybe something to see with you all.
Very pleased to met you all.

David de Obregon y Sierra

P.D. Hablais Español?
