It really is fascinating to see so many people researching what I thought was a very uncommon name.

I've recently been researching my own family tree but get completely stuck at my grandfather due to a lack of information.

He was Henry (known as Harry) Odd, as far as we know born in 1918 and died in 2008. These dates are not 100% as we have never found any birth records for him. There is also a possiblilty that he may also not have been born as Henry.

There is a suspicion that he was born out of wedlock as we are not sure about his immediate family (apart from his wife, my grandmother, who is still alive today but also none the wiser!)
We believe he had a brother ronald and a sister Ivy, but we are also unsure if this is certain/if he had any more siblings.

Anyway, if anybody does have any clues, I would be interested to see!

Hi, thank you for the link to the photo and the pedigree chart. I figured out how my husband is realted to you. Your William Francis the youngest son of Charles Sr. is the brother to my husbands direct line from Charles Jr. married to Agnes Mc Donald they lived in Kaysville, Utah. So we are Cousins! We have two story books written by Charles W. Odd son of Walter T. Odd, Charles Jr. Grandson. I hope all of that makes sense. The first book mentions that Charles Sr. son William took care of him. I will keep you posted if I find any new information. I know what you mean by not working on a line in a long time. I just got interested in this line because of the latest Odd book and the mention of the Odsboy situation. That type of thing just makes me crazy. I have been doing genealogy work for 30 years. I do it as a hobby and I love mysteries. It as been fun getting to talk to you!

Hi Dorthy, thank you for the reply. Well do we know the name of the innkeeper, are you referring to Knightingale? If not we need to figure out the names of the innkeeper and take a look at their genealogy to see if there were any family stories of an illegitment child. Also then we could some day match DNA with one of his descendants. I will be looking into it so if you have any clues on possible name that I could check I would appreciate it. These kinds of mysteries drive me crazy! Are you aware of the recentant book Charles Odd from Utah made? Can you please tell me how you are related to the Odds?

My theory has always been that John Oddsboy was the son,on the wrong side of the blanket, of the innkeeper of the White Hart - or he know the parents....

Wonder if DNA technology of today could point in any direction?

Hi, my husband's Mom is an Odd. I was wondering if you remembered the Duke's name you mentioned in your story. I know that post was four years ago. Also interested in any similar story's of John Oddsboy 1728 lineage, his parents to be excat, has anyone gotten any leads or found any more information on his childhood. Also does anyone know the names of the Dukes in the area at this time. Also we are interested in obtaining one of the Odd and Sons cricket bats, does anyone have a lead on how we can get one? Well now you have me equally curious as Levett and Fuller are two of my main ancestral lines.

I am descended from Emily Fuller and Samuel Levett who married in 1868 (although she lived with him from at least 1861. Samuel was previously married to Lucy Odd.

Emily (b 1830) is the daughter of Edward Fuller and Sarah (nee Acton).
Samuuel (b 1827) is the son of William Levett and Mary (nee Bashford).
Their daughter Mary-Ann (b c1853) is my 2x great grandmother, she married Thomas Bevin in 1871.

I have been researching these families for many years now and last year published a family history.

My gg mother was harriet relph nee packman,keturah was her mother,my great grandmother julia relph was brought up by her packman grandparents she inherited property and public houses,first the blacksmiths arms cudham,then the ship at sutton at hone,she married a charles watson.
the relphs and packmans have jewish connections i think they were mesianic jews believers in christ.

I've just found the information your looking for through a new contact on GR.

Caroline and Elizabeth were indeed sisters. Their parents are John PACKHAM born circa 1790 in Kingsdown Kent and Margaret GARNER born circa 1793 also Kingsdown. They married in Kingsdown 4th June 1815.

Don't have any other information you were asking.

Would you like me to give your contact details to her to see if she can help you?

Sorry I don't think I can help much except to say that the info you have given on the ODD marriages is correct. We aren't sure exactly when James and Sarah married so usually plump for circa 1818. They did indeed have 6 children. We thought perhaps they were sisters.

I'm on a research group for the ODD family I can ask there if anyone knows anything?

Hi I am researching my Smith, Packman and Turner line all from Eynsford in Kent, Sarah Smith was born in Eynsford in 1796,daughter of Thomas Smith and Dorcas Turner She Married James Odd in 1818,( If I have this right )I have them listed as having 6 children, Two of their Children married Packman's
Thomas Odd married Caroline Packman in 1845 Eynsford
Ebenezer Odd married Elizabeth Packman

Thomas Smith and Dorcas also had a Grandson Reuben Smith who married Elizabeth Packman in 1850, daughter of Samuel and Keturah Packman who were my GG Grandparents,

I am a little confused with all this and I wonder if anyone can help me with further information on who Caroline and Elizabeth's parents were as I wonder if these 3 Packman woman were relatedto eachother.

Some of our Packman family went to New Zealand and Sydney Aust, My Smith came here to Victoria Australia much later

Hi Thanks for this very interesting posting. Any information would be much appreciated. Family members are quite intrigued.

We do have an HODD linage in our family which details seem to tally with what you say. We know that at some point that line changed their name from ODD to HODD

I'd take the Duke story with a pinch of salt. All we know is that we are descended from a foundling named John ODDBOY found at the White Hart in Limpsfield in 1728. Parentage unknown. Family rumour has that it might vagely have been Lord of the manor and servant girl but without DNA from the Lord's side we'll never know. Either way his is a success story with tons of relations all over the world.

It's great to hear what you've got though and would be good to hear the name of the Duke if you remember it.

A few years ago my next door neighbour was a chap called Charles Hodd. I spent many evenings talking with him about lots of things. He was the son of Charles Henry Hodd (from Croydon), who was a descendent of John Odd. Charlie told me that he was descended from a boy who was the product of an morganic marriage between a Duke and an actress - and he remembered that the name came from "Odd Boy". He did name the Duke, but I can't remember it now.

Charlie Hodd worked in a Quarry as an engineer for 50 odd years. When he retired they closed the pit. He took up painting later in life - a passion that had been on hold for most of his life. When he was a boy, he had the opportunity to go to Croydon Art School, but his father banned this, and he was sent to work at the quarry his father worked for, initially cleaning the latrines. Charlie was born in 1908, and died in 1998 having just made it to his 90th birthday. I have many fond memories of Charlie.

If the name of the Duke comes back to me, I will send to the thread. He remembered a funeral in the 1920's - where lots of men attended, and when they turned from the grave, they made some comment about that putting an end to those who knew about it. I believe this funeral may have been William Hodd who died in 1925 aged 90.

This William Brooker is the son of another William Brooker. William Brooker senior was a publican according to William junior's marriage certificate of 1849. William junior was born in East Grinstead according to the 1851 census (HO 107 Piece 1601 Folio 250 Page 23). He possibly had a brother Thomas (living next door in the 1851 census).

Thank you for your e-mail I must omit this is all very interesting,Dorcas and Thomas Brooker had six children, my husbands great great grandfather was Edwin Brooker their fifth son,they the family house was in Whitehorse Road Croydon, Florance Cottages when my husaband's Auntie passed away 2001

According to my records Dorcas and Thomas was married in Chelsford, the first two boys were born near there.

Yes I think that everything you say is right - if you would like more details, let me know and I will give you what information I have. I am the great great grandaughter of Sarah Odd. How lucky you are to have a family bible - I think that must be every genealogist's dream.
I only have a hunch that Sarah and Dorcas married the brothers William and Thomas Brooker - nothing verified as yet. When I looked at the 1841 Census there was a William and Thomas Brooker living nearby the Odd family and their details don't match other information that I have about them - so there's a bit of a puzzle to sort out.

Looking for descendants of John Oddboy. he was born 1728 and found in a haystack in the grounds of an inn and so was named Oddboy. Variations have been Oddsboy, Odboye, Odsboy. The name has been shortened by some of the next generation to Odd.

He married a Sarah Davis and they had several children who were prolific in turn.

Descendants are now in England, all over United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.

Be great to add in connections and fill gaps in the tree.

That is a total blooper on my part, William is certainly the father.
Do you have any information at all on Lucy?
She married Samuel Levett in 1847 and he appears as a widow on the 1851 census, but I have been unable to locate a death or burial for her under Levett or Odd. There was a baby William Levett who died in 1848 and am wondering if Lucy died also.

I haven't been able to determine who William's parents were, though James & Elizabeth (who had children in 1792 and 1799 with none in between) seem most likely.

Hi, I am looking for information re the family of James and Sophia ODD.
Their children: Ann (b.1824), Jane 1826, Lucy 1829, Harriett 1832, Henry 1835, Thomas 1838, Elizabeth 1841 & Sophy 1845.

Lucy married Samuel Levett in 1847 and then promptly disappeared. He appears as a widow on 1851 census but I can't find a death for Lucy (Odd or Levett).
Anyone recognise this family?

Hi folks... I'm now convinced this is in fact William Odd's wife Sarah Baker, and that the witness to the death (or perhaps the person who recorded the death) named her as the widower of John Odd in error.

The information that caused the confusion was the Feb 21 1838 date of death for Sarah Baker that I got from a couple of people. I now believe that this was mistranscribed somewhere along the line and should have been Feb 21 **1839** (not 1838), as I found a Parish Register Burial entry for Sarah on that date... This would mean that she died on Feb 14th and was buried 1 week later on Feb 21st. Very consistent.

I had a further look at this and see you have a William ODD and Sarah BAKER connection. I'm descended via these too.

My branch is via their Thomas ODD and Elizabeth KINGSWOOD.

In my tree I do have a little on your branch.

I have that Sarah ODD was born 4th June 1846 in Westerham, Kent, England. She married William BROOKER in Bexley in 1849. I also have that they had one son Frederick BROOKER but no birth date or further details.

Please set me right if I have any details wrong and I'd love to hear more about your branch.

My great great grandmother is Sarah Odd, eldest daughter of James Odd and Sarah Smith, and great granddaughter of John Oddboy and Sarah Davis.
Sarah married William Brooker in 1849 in Bexley. William's occupation was given as a railway line keeper in Croydon, on his son Frederick's birth certificate.

I received a death cert. today for Sarah Odd that is a little puzzling.

Here is what it says:

1839 Death in subdistrict of Sevenoaks in the County of Kent
February 14, 1839, Parish of Westerham
Sarah Odd
Female
74 Years
Widow of John Odd, Agricultural Labourer
Cause of Death: Natural Decay
Informant: Fanny Sales, present at Death, Westerham
Registered: Feb 15, 1839
T. Waring, Registrar

My concern is that she is listed as Widow of John Odd... The only John that
would be old enough is John Odd b. May 24 1761, but I found him alive and
well in the 1841 census:

Holly Bush, Chelsfield, Chislehurst, Kent, England: John Odboy, Age 80, born
in County=Y.

Perhaps this is really Sarah Baker, Widow of William Odd (b. Aug 7 1763),
and the informant got it wrong (seems to fit, age is correct and location is
dead on).

Mike and Judy, both of your ancestry files indicate that Sarah Baker died on
Feb 21 1838... Can you tell me the source you used for this data?

Yes the Odd research is still going strong and is very interesting and addictive!

Be great to see if there is a connection or not. I am descended from John Oddboy born in Limpsfield, Surrey England and I know his descendants are spread out far and wide.

Even if there isn't a connection may still be able to help with enquiries and such a lot of the "Odd" researchers are in touch with each other and we quite often find a link in the most unexpected places, so it wouldn't be just myself that is interested.

There are oodles of Odds in Kent. The family originated in Limpsfield, Surrey in 1728 with John Oddboy. He moved to Westerham, Kent with his wife and had several children. The family has spread out far and wide.!! Not bad for a foundling I'd say.

Will look in what I have and see if I have a Henry Odd anywhere.

as you are interested in the surname odd i can help you out a little.

the bit that may interest you is my grandfather who is Harry Odd and lives in Kent, UK. I have noticed this name before from possibly a generation or two further back?i am not sure of his date of birth but i would assume it is in the 1920's
hope i have been able to help

by the way, Kent may possibly be the best place to look for the surname as i have seen the international Odd directory and more names appear in Kent than anywhere else.

Found this posting in my Rootsweb Newsletter. Hope we get heaps of information about Odds of Surrey, Kent, England and U.S.A.

For others that may be interested in this line, my gr grandmother was Eliza ODD b 1850, only child of James ODD and Maria COPPIN. Born in Addington or Croydon, Surrey, England. They emigrated to Victoria Australia, where somehow James disappeared( can not find a death in Aust.).
Maria & daughter Eliza arrived in New Zealand about 1857-64 where Eliza married 1st; James Cato KITTELTY in Greymouth in 1866. After being deserted by her husband, Eliza met and later married Walter ATKIN b. 1846 in Cork, Ireland. He was a newspaper man on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Thanks for your help Lin... Judy and I exchanged a bunch of emails last night, and have come to the conclusion that we're indeed "half third cousins"! We're in the process of exchanging GedCom's...

James didn't go to the USA... he left from down under and went back to England (was back by 1871 for the census).

PS: Do you know of a way to verify whether an address exists in the UK? I'm trying to see if 37 Mill Lane, Carshalton, is still standing... it's where James and family lived until 1891.
