Hi. I'm Jerry W O'Dell, grandson of Omar O'Dell. He was supposed to have 20 children, and I only saw him a couple of times because of WWII.

He was a large, tough man, very successful in business.
His children (some) were Tennise, John, Wayne, Preacher,
Hazel, and many more.

He died about 1944 because he had pneumonia, and wouldn't go to a doctor. Finally my father, Curtis, went over and ordered him to do it. But it was too late.

I go to Gallipolis, and note that the lumberyard is still functioning. Omar sold lumber, made cider in a great big press, and was said to have owned half ot the town.

My father, Curtis Kearns, was a very successful insurance man in Dayton, Ohio. Omar didn't get along with his father very well (or anyone, for that matter) but Omar's father was said to be the most beloved man in Gallia county. He had 217 children and grandchildren, and used to send each one a quarter at Christmas time. My uncle John took over the lumberyard, and I think he did very well.Nice man.

I hope that this helps a bit. A lot of the children settled in Zephyrhills, Florida

Hi. I know this is an old post, but are you still looking? If so, is your Ontario immigrant the William Odell who was born 1836, son of William James Odell and Ann Read, married to Martha Whitman? If he is, I have quite a lot of info, going back to the William you mention (b 1624, married Ann Polins, children - William, John and Richard), and even his father - Stephen, who married Joan Basterfield. The 1624 William was the miller in Marston (and possibly benefactor of the local church). The Ontario William was my great-grandfather's eldest brother. Let me know if I can help out - I've a lot of records not available on the internet.

John Odell, b. England d. Hartford CT

I'm working on my young nieces family tree and I'm trying to find more information on their 3rd great grandfather John Odell. John was born in England Mar 1857 and I can't find his parentage because on English census there are too many John Odell's that fit that birth year. John married Ann Emily Piggot. The first 3 children were born in Canada and the last, Florence, my nieces 2x great grandmother, was born in New York. John is on the 1900 census in Marlborough, MA and on the 1910 & 1920 census' in Hartford, CT. John died in Hartford and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. I'm very interested in finding the name of his parents so I can better look at the family in the English census'. Thank you very much for any help given.

That's what I'm thinking, Mitch. I saw Vesti Snyder's posts in the Delaware County discussion board about Minnie Carl Stevens Ward and I do have a Minerva Carl in the 1870 census living with the same parents. Could you send me any information you have about Nathaniel? I can't seem to get in touch with Vesti, although I've tried 5 different e-mails as well as Facebook. From Vesti's descriptions, she sounds like a really colorful gal, with at least 4 different husbands. Isn't this fun?

Alice O'Dell could have been Minerva Carl's and Nathaniel O'Dell's daughter. Nathaniel and Minerva were married on September 22, 1869 in Neversink, Sullivan County, New York. They had 4 children, who they are I am still working on that. In Nathaniel's Civil War records obtained from the national archives on May 4 1898 while appling for a pension that he was married to Minerva Carl and had 4 children with her and that he has been living with Eunice since Dec 15, 1887 and has had 6 children with her up to then. So Alice could be Minerva and Nathaniels.
Jeanne:

Have you ever come across an Alice ODell? She was born in about 1873 and is first seen in the 1880 census living with John and Lucinda Carl in Rockland, Sullivan Cty. She is listed as a "step-daughter" but she may actually be a granddaughter to John and Lucinda. They have a bunch of kids in the 1870 census, any one of which could have had children, then died before 1880. I'm at a dead end here.

Any thoughts?

- Anne Keller Geraci

My great great grandfather John L O'Dell was very good at keeping notes/records. He was born 1846 and died 1932 at Quick, WV. I have a copy of a letter dated 1915 that he had answered about the O'Dell line. He said he was descended from a Reginald Odell of Boston and then named Reginald sons. Now if I go by that and I see no reason I shouldn't, that would mean he was descended from Reginald's son Samuel. I cannot find anything on Samuel and who he married as of yet. Anyone have any information? I sure would appreciate it! Thanks.

Thanks. Eli was my gggg granfather on my mom's side of the family. . . and there does seem to be quite a bit of information about him and his family, both from Crawford County and then Madison County, IA. I descend from his youngest daughter Marietta, who married Casper Armbrest.

I have a similar line to yours going back on him, but no one seems to know where that information came from? Is it just family tradition, did someone research it and find records, and if so what are those records? That's what I'm trying to hunt down right now.

I guess maybe I need to track down a probate or will for Jacob who died in 1842 and see if it names Eli to prove the connection there.

Anyway if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!!!

Angie

PS - Yes in Crawford County, he definitely known as a stop on the RR. . . I can't find mention of it in Madison County, but I believe his son Noah, who settled in Adams County was a stop in Iowa after the family moved. Such an interesting thing to know about the family.

Calling all Odells/O’Dells - Please help!

Hello,

My maiden name is O’Dell (although my ancestry research shows original spelling was Odell) and I have spent years trying to get past my great-grandfather’s generation and it’s just been a true brick wall.

Through a coincidence I have two Odell ancestors that seem to be unrelated
.
My great grandfather was Charles Edgar Odell (1870-1933) and his father was John A. Odell (1849- early 1880’s). I can’t get past John A. Odell -- who apparently was born in Virginia (W. Virginia perhaps) but lived in Warren County, Pennsylvania as an adult. Charles E. Odell married a girl named Minnie Andrews (1870-1967.)

Now here is where the coincidence comes in -- Minnie Andrews’s mother’s maiden name was also Odell.....Florence Selena Odell (1844-1926) married Frederick S. Andrews (1840-192.) Florence S. Odell Andrew’s father was a man named Ansel Hurlburt Odell (1800-1885.) I have lots of records on Ansel as an adult in Walworth, Troy County,
Wisconsin --but just can find his parents. Ansel H. Odell was born in Vermont about 1800 and showed up in Wisconsin as a young man.

I persuaded one of my brothers to submit his DNA a few years ago but have made no progress. Would love to track down both of my Odell lines.

Kind Regards,

An Odell Cousin

My grandfather was Ralph O'Dell. He had a daughter named Betty Jean in 1935 in Portland, Oregon. That would mean Ralph was likely born some time between 1905 and 1915. Betty Jean's mother's name was Irene. Both Ralph and Irene were deaf.

My 3g grandmother was Hannah Ette Odell, 1812-1849, m. Joseph N. Root (Schoarie and Catteraugus co., NY). Their firstborn son was named James Alden Root. I have noticed the name Alden used (mostly as a middle name) for several other Odell relatives. Does anyone on this list know the origin? Thanks, Laurie

Wonder if mary ann is related to my Nancy ?
From the History of Clay County Illinois, Vol. I, page 218

"CALEB ODELL, farmer and stock-raiser, P. O. Hoosier Prairie, was born September 29, 1827, in Lawrence County, Ind. His father, Joseph Odell (deceased), was a native of Randolph County, N. C. Mr. Odell was brought up on the farm, and attended a subscription school. In the fall of 1852, he came to this county to improve his 200 acres of land, which he had previously entered. This constitutes a portion of his present beautiful farm on Levitt's Prairie, in Hoosier Township. He did not settle on his land, however, until early in 1853, when he built a rude log hut and began making other improvements. Like other pioneers, Mr. Odell became much disheartened by sickness, and used every possible effort to sell his possessions and leave the country; at on time he proposed to Henry Conley to trade him his 200 acres of land for a team and wagon and $200 in money, but it seemed out of the question to sell, and as he had nothing with which to go away he was compelled to remain. When he began life, he had a wagon and two ponies, and $115 in money. He has been eminently successful, and now owns 340 acres of valuable land, well stocked and improved, and has the finest brick residence in Hoosier Township. He had three brothers, all of whom were soldiers for the Union in the late war. In 1862, he held the office of Assessor for Hoosier Township. In religion, he is a Baptist. Mr. Odell was married the first time on the 9th of November, 1848, to Nancy J. Higginbotham, by whomhe had ten children; of these eight are living, viz., Joseph, Rebecca, Martha J., Sidney, Hugh, Caleb, Elizabeth and Frederick. Mrs. Odell died March 2, 1877, and on the 2nd day of the following June he married Mrs. Nancy A. Maxwell, who had been twice married before. By her he has had four children, three of whom are living, viz., Valentine, Perley and Bertha. This last wife had two children by her first husband, viz., Lurinda and Ella Herley. We should have mentioned that Mr. Odell owns a very fine traction engine and thresher, which he operates each season.

I am a decendent of Valentine, and believe he is a decendent of Nehemiah. retiredsailor6@yahoo.com

In answer to your question, as you said "there were so many Jonathans..." and this is a good example of how the same given name and birth date can cause research problems.
I truly doubt that he was the same Jonathan as yours (who was Abraham's son and who died in Yonkers in 1806), as both the D.A.R. record and his Revolutionary War pension record for our Jonathan have him dying at a much later date and different place (Ulysses, Tompkins, New York) and his wife, Catherine (Terwilliger) Odell, continuing to receive the pension benefits until her death in Tompkins County, New York.
Thank you for trying to help me with this research and for trying to bring it to a successful end.
I will continue searching and hopefully be able to make the correct paternal and maternal connection for him within the Odell family.
I am descendant from this line and the info I have is that Johnathan Odell was born June 23, 1760 died 1806 Married to Eleanor or Elizabeth Underhill, parents Abraham Odell and Rebecca Dykeman, but it does get confusing there were so many Jonathans and Johns, Abrahams, etc.... I have also seen Mackenzies info you refer too. I am wondering, if he did travel around like you said, could it be he ended up back to Yonkers where he was born and did die there? I would loove to confirm all this also...

Hi Chan
You are correct. My bad. Don't know where my brain was when I typed that. As to the Aug date, I only know what the headstone says. Not sure about Jim's William either. From everything I found a while back William, the son of Nehemiah and Rachel, was born in 1827 in Ray Co. He married a woman named Ruth Odell, served in the Civil War on the Union side, died in 1865 and hs widow applied for and received his Civil war pension. Also his grandparents were Caleb Odell and Rachel Clevenger not Isaac Odell and Abigail Mansfield. I don't see how this could be our William but I would be interested in seeing his documentation.
Regards
Brenda
Hi Phyllis,
I'm from Mac Odell. When I started all this all I knew was my grandfather's name and g grandmother's maiden name period. It has been quite a ride. I agree with you about Wm not wanting to be found. His wife too! I really envy people that have family to question. I don't have much but what I have I am willing to share.

Brenda

Actually, William died in 1870. I have him in the 1870 census, taken in mid-June. He has been reported to have died on June 1, 1870. I have other information that says it was actually August 14, 1870.

There is a family tree with William's antecedents going back to 1425. It was put on line by Jim Hill. His wife is a descendent of Francis McCord Odell, the youngest child of william and Sarah. I believe if you type in Francis M Odell, or Mack Odell, you may be directed to the tree. It is called O'dells Family Tree.

Chan Odell

Oscar said there was a reunion at the end of this month, he may be there. I live in Florida and cannot make it. I will let my brothers know - Rick, Bill and John, Jr. still live in Charleston.

You should get a lot of info, especially from older people. I am particularly interested in any Native American ties in the family. There were always whispers, but it was not safe to admit for so many years, it has been buried.

Oscar is a tribal member and I have an Ahnentafel Chart, but a lot of dates do not seem to be right unless there were multiple marriages or illegitimate children or something like that that are not on the papers.

Anyway, we can work together and figure it out.

Also wanted to make sure you knew about the Taylor Reunion this Saturday. It is going to be at Coonskin Park at the Columbia Shelter that is just right passed the clubhouse. Lola Vealey and her husband are putting it all together. Should be starting at noon. Tell all your family about it. I haven't been to one since late 70s or early 80s.

VJ

Can't wait to see what you have! Luckily for me, Grandma had mom write down a lot of names/dates a few years before Grandma died. I have quite a bit that I have worked on over the years connecting the "dots" on several family members. But, truthfully, I don't have that much on Aunt Flora's family so can't wait to compare with you.

Take care!

VJ
