Hi Emily, can you tell me where to find your 1777 account of Ann Ogan's application? Is that the Frederick County Orphans Book? I am descended from Thomas Ogan via his daughter Catherine and granddaughter Ann Mackley Bradburn. Thanks very much!

Also Fold3.com has a 1785 payroll listing for Thomas Ogan in their latest database of Revolutionary Number Books. I downloaded it for anyone who wants it.

Janet Wright

I was going to write earlier today, but was busy. I am an Ogan desc. form Peter and Euphemia. I also run the Ogan DNA project and we have tested a member of Peter's family as well as Samuel's family. Unless there is a paternity issue with Samuel's line that was tested (Peter's had many matches), there is no way on heaven and earth that Samuel is connected to Peter unless you want to take the lines back over 1,000 years ago and more. Of course, impossible to do.

Peter is the son of Samuel according to the genealogy, but Samuel isn't the son of Peter unless there was a paternity issue somewhere in Samuel's line. I do know that Euphemia (Phamey) was adopted by Samuel Bevan. So this family is open to adopting children. I do know that both Samuel and Peter were in Belmont Co, OH just after 1806 and they no doubt new each other. There was an Evan there, also and his DNA line matches that of Peter. If you would like to email me directly, I can give you names, dates and places on the desc. of Samuel. I am sorry, but I don't have time tonight and this form is a bit small for what I know.

If you know of an Ogan male who descends from this line, we could test him and determine if the other line who tested from Samuel is accurately from him or not. That test would be reduced for you as this is something the project has wanted to do.

Peter was a son of Samuel (1779-1842) and Mary or Nancy (1780-1845). Samuel was a son of Peter (ca 1747- ca 1830) and Phamy Ogan of Virginia. Emily can fill you in on more of this family. Read thru the Ogan posts for postings from Kelly Remy and Paula Ogan Schneider.

My grandmothers maiden name was Ogan she was born in or around the Council Bluff Iowa area in the late 1880's. My father told me she was orphaned however the records I have found indicate that possibly her father died and her mother remarried to a man with the last name Mowery. If anyone has info on the Ogan or Mowerys in Iowa, please contact me.
Thanks!

Catherine married Jacob Mackley, dob abt 1765 Berne Switzerland, married 13 Nov 1786 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He died abot 1830 in Mason County. CatherineFrom my research I found they had at least eight children, Nellie, Ann,Mary, Elizabeth, Felix,Barbara, Hiram, and, Catherine. The Mother Catherine Ogan Mackley died after the 1830 census. At the time of the 1830 Federal Census of Mason County Virginia Catherine Ogan Mackley is with her son Hiram on the family farm. This puts her death between 1830 and 1840 in Mason County, Virginia. Hiram married Barbara Rogers Hughes 19 Dec 1824 in Mason County, Virginia. They had at least seven children, 2 sons and 5 daughters.

I have he died about 1813 in Frederick Co, VA.

Source that he could not have died in 1765:
Gwathmey's (1938) Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution lists Thomas Ogan from 1777 to 1781 on the muster roles of the 11th, 15th, and 7th Virginia Continental Line of Morgan's Riflemen as a wagoner under the command of Brigadier General Daniel Morgan.

More proof:
1777: Frederick Co, VA OB, 5 Aug 1777, p. 454. On application of Ann Ogan whose husband is a soldier in the 11th VA Regt setting forth that she with six children destitute of the common necessaries of life, and unable to support themselves.....

1813: Rockingham Co, VA, 30 Nov 1813. “To the Commonwealth, the Speakers and Members of both houses of the General Assembly.
The petition of Thomas Ogan a Citizen of the County of Rockingham and State of Virginia Humbly shareth that your Petitioner Sometime in the early Part of the year 1777, enlisted, (for and during the war that then existed between the United States and Great Brittan,) with Gen'l Robert Porterfield (Then a Captain in the 11th Virginia Regiment) on Continental establishment, as appears by his Certificate hereunto annexed, your Petitioner begs leave further to represent that he is Very Poor, but has heretofore made out to Support himself and family by the Deed of hard labour, but is now getting old and very infirm, (being about 72 years of age)

Probably know this by now but just noticed it checking the Ogan genealogy lines..Catherine Ogan married Jacob McLey, 1/13/1786 as stated in the Rockinghham Co., VA marriages 1778-1816 by Strickler (Old Tenth Legion of Marriages) published 1976. Thomas is listed as her father.
His d.o.b. only goes in other sources as 1765 and her's as d.o.b. is listed as 1768, Catherine died Mason, Fairfax Co., VA...
Anything you can add to this would be appreciated. thanks!

Jackie, I'm very curious about your Ogan side and would love to get the ancestors of Nancy Jane. I have Ogans in my family and am trying to get a booklet done on that branch. Sometimes one needs to look at all the branches to determine to whom you belong, however! LOL...so I have a lot of Ogan data...lots!

Thanks for writing back..you never know if emails here are current. BTW, my email is: aulicino@hevanet.com

I respond better to it as I'm usually answering more emails than writing on various boards and forums.

Do keep me updated and I'll keep checking my huge data base for clues.

I dont know why Issac is on the 1870 census but he is and my daughter in law fatheris Issac Stains jr. Issac Sr was killed in 1936 at the age of 73 .He was born 1863 so on the 1870 census he is 7 so that adds up . It is possible he left home before the 1880 census as lot of kids did. There also is another boy Cyuntson born 1879 .We are just now looking up all this information .We will be trying to contact the oldest of this family for other infor and pictures. You may also be made aware that there are twins in this family and if a person was not at home the neighbor would give information on the census ages may not always be right but people do know names You may also note that Elenore was also born in MO and Salbert moved to Kansas city Mo before 1880. We will be looking for a marriage record also this all we have and we beleive it is right .I will of course sent you correct information when we get it .We have many contacts yet to talk to

Emily, I tried to send the following message via the email address you sent. It did not go through..so will try this again. Marion
Yes, I am still working on our family history. I would love to have you send what you have on this family.

He lived with my Great Great Grandparents, and my Gr Gr Grandmother, Esther Ann Burnet Ogan Lyons signed her name several times as Esther Ogan and one of her sons on the Iowa 1825 census wrote that his mothers name was Esther Ogan. We do know she was born to Samuel Landon Burnet, but may have lived or married a Ogan, and Charles Clinton is related to her that way....

Please use the Marion58@live.com email address, I do still have the aol address, but use this one daily. Thanks for contacting me again...gets exciting when a break may happen....Marion

I realize Isaac Stains is on the 1870 US census for kansas in Lecompton Twp., Douglas Co. I also realize that everything written on the census reports is not gospel and many reasons for that. But Isaac SHOWS to be born in Missouri as well as the female Julia who is 4 years old just beneath Isaac in the census.

The 1865 KS census shows Sabert Stains with his parents in Jefferson Co., Rock Creek Twp, Post Office Cook's Ford.
The date is 16 May 1865.

T. S. Stains male age 56 farmer b. Pen.
E. Stains female age 45 b. Pen.
S. H. Stains male age 24 b. Pen.
E. Stains female age 13 b. Pen.
T. N. Stains male age 6 b. Kan.

Sabert Stains and Nancy Jane Ogan were married 1 Aug 1865 in Kansas.
I don't find an Isaac Stains 2 yrs old (or any age) with the rest of the Stains or anywhere else in Kansas state census.

I have not found Nancy Jane Ogan in an 1865 KS state census.

I haven't found any evidence that Isaac was a son of Sabert Stains.

If you have anything showing that Isaac was a son of Sabert, can you provide it, please?

Thank you,
Gene

Isaac Stains married Rena Myrtle Onstott in 1904. They were living in Andrew County, Missouri, in 1910, and in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1920. They had at least 6 children, three of whom unfortunately died in Kansas City 1917-1919. I don't know what happened to Rena Myrtle after 1920. In 1930 Isaac apparently has a new wife and family and is living in Doniphan County, Kansas. I don't know when he died.

Hi,
You are correct about the 1880 census. A short time after I posted this query, I could finally read the census as "Infant son". I don't know who that Isaac Stains is listed with them in 1870, but really don't think he is a younger brother. He is not listed with Thomas & Eleanor in the KS 1865 census.
What do you know about your Isaac Stains?

The 1880 census for this family is very difficult to read. I believe, though, that the name of the youngest is "Infant son."

My family tree includes Isaac Stains, who was listed with this family in 1870 in Douglas County, Kansas. He was 7 at that time. I am wondering how he was related to Sabert Stains - a young brother, perhaps?

Ogan DNA Project

For anyone interested in Genetic Genealogy (The use of DNA testing to aid traditional genealogical research), you care most welcomed to join a group of people who are searching for various Ogan, Ogin, Ogon, O'Ogan, Ogun, etc. (any spelling) line to determine who matches whom.

The Ogan (and variant spellings) DNA Project is small, but growing. DNA testing can help you find reserachers connected to your line and testing can disprove branches thought to be related, as well.

Genetic Genealogy is the most accurate tool we have in our toolkit. It can prove and disprove the paper trail and it can help with brick walls.

You may see the website at: www.familytreedna.com/public/Ogan

Email me with any questions you may have.

Thank you,
Emily
Project Manager
aulicino@hevanet.com

Charles Clinton Ogan

I tried to answer one of the reply's I have received, from I believe Emilee, however the email address is not receiving, so here is the reply I sent,
I believe somehow this Charles Clinton Ogan is related to the Jacob Lyons family of Allamakee, Iowa. It may be that he is the son of Esther Burnett Lyons, but so far we have been unsuccessful in finding a link and are also stumped on the parentage of Jacob Lyons. We have a Charles listed on the census reports born about 1844 and later find Charles Clinton Ogan is the same age. He too lived in Allamakee, Iowa. On old family records the name of Oogan is also written, so another piece of our puzzle. We find that Charles Clinton Ogan joined the infantry in the Civil War in 1861 from an Iowa town, also from the same town the same year a Charles Lyons, the Charles Lyons was killed during the war. The Charles Clinton Ogan, married and continued to move with the Jacob Lyons family, finally ended in Northwest Iowa. Seems strange if they were not related that so many times they are in the same area. Can anyone help with identifying this person and where he came from. Thanks

Try checking the Iowa census as well as the Pennsylvania census' around those dates and see if the Lyons or Burnett families were in the same neighborhood as Charles Ogan. Families tended to stay close even when they moved.

Chet Ogan

Charles Clinton Ogan

He was in Allamakee, Iowa in 1860 as was the Jacob Lyons family. We are trying to determine is he is the son of Esther Burnett Lyons, On the census there is a Charles, and we have the name of Clinton and Ogan in family records. Trying to work on a giant puzzle, Both Charles have births as Pennsylvania in 1844. Too many things match, but we just cannot connect the dots, can anyone help with this puzzle?

I have a Laura Ethel Ogan in my files. She was born November 1874 in Windsor, Henry County, Missouri, and she married Albert Havenar. Lots of kids. Can you tell me the names of your ancestors? With those names, I can probably make the link for you.

Mark
