Sherri, Is there any way I can get a copy of that book? My grandfather was Chester Hill Ogden. He was born in indian territory in 1898. Not sure if this was TX or OK since the borders had not been finalized to the best of my knowledge.

Hi Sherri, I'm just beginning my family tree and found your post about an Ogden Family History Book. I am a descendant of Henry Calvin Ogden. He was my great grandfather. Then there is my grandfather, also named Henry Calvin Ogden b 1903 and d. 1990. He married Margaret Elizabeth Gehrels. They lived mostly in San Antonio, Texas and Retired to Tow, Texas on Lake Buchanan. I'm trying to connect with relatives in Mississippi that I knew growing up. I did visit the Retirement Plantation a time or two as I grew up. Any info or leads for me? :-) Thank you, Carol Hodges Scanlon (mom was Pauline Margaret Ogden.

My Ogden ancestors are also from Chester County PA. I am specifically looking for information about a James Charles Ogden (my g-g-g-g-grandfather) born in Lancashire, England in 1804. He is supposedly buried in the Great Valley Church Cemetery (near Devon, PA) and was married to Ann (or Hannah) Potts. They had a son named Stanley Lee Ogden (b. 1841) who had 7 children, one of whom was James Bernard Ogden (b. 17 Nov 1858 in Chester Co. PA). James B. Ogden married Emma Jane Scott and they had 8 children-- one of whom is my great-grandfather (also named Stanley Lee Ogden, b. 29 Nov 1890).

I am a descendant of Amelia Ogden Spooner, and probably have some answers re: Zina Ogden's ancestry. Recent research has placed his father, Benjamin Ogden, as son of Gilbert and Martha (Smith) Ogden, although I at first believed he was a son of Gilbert and Betsy Ogden, also of Queensbury, NY. His mother, Martha Green Ogden came to Mondamin, Iowa, with Amelia and Pomeroy Spooner, and lived with them until her death, and she is buried with the Spooners at Noyes Cemetery, Mondamin, IA. I have information that Martha received a widow's pension as widow of a soldier of the War of 1812, and I have found Benjamin Ogden's name listed as being a soldier from Warren County. Ed Ogden married Kate Ruffcorn, sister of my grandmother, Ida Ruffcorn Spooner, so Spooners and Ogdens were almost double cousins.

My GGGGrandmother was either Catherine Ogden Cowell or Sara Ogden Cowell or Sara Catherine Ogden Cowell married to Joseph Cowell in Greene Co, PA abt 1827. Early records show Sara in Greene Co, PA, but not records in Champaign or Vermilion County, IL where the family moved abt 1830. Catherine is in 1850 census records and death records in Vermilion Co, IL no records of Sara. We believe Catherine was born 1805 - 1810 in Greene County, PA to Andrew Ogden family. A brother who came to IL at the same time seems to be James Ogden. Any help you can provide to clear up this mystry would be helpful.
Dr Ogden and Lavinia

Hi there,

Was wondering if this rings a bell for anyone.

My Nanna used to tell me the story of a little girl called Lavinia Ogden who died when she was very young. The whole story is quite sad.

Lavinia died when she was a little girl, she apparently woke one night, picked up a candle to light her way. The flames ignited her nightdress and she burned to death.

Her Mother died a few yrs later from an accidental aspirin overdose (apparently not uncommon in those days).

Her Father was a doctor, my Dad seems to think like a G.P. who would be called out to patients' homes in the night. My Dad remembers the story as that he died of pneumonia after his daughter and wife's deaths.

The stories in the family are a bit different. My Dad doesn't think my Nanna was related to them but my Aunt is sure she was. My Nanna was Muriel Matthew (later Parry) of Rochdale, her Father owned and ran a Pawnbrokers in George St. We're all pretty sure that that Lavinia and her Father's surname was Ogden.

I have found an Odgen family on the 1881 census living at 150 Drake Street.

Head: Charles is a Doctor b. 1847
Wife: Hannah b. 1851
Daughter: Lavinia b. 1878
Brother: Richard b. 1833 listed as a retired woollen merchant.

they are all listed as born in Rochdale, and don't appear in a census after 1881.

Also living with them were their cook - Ellen Russell and housemaid - Elizabeth Newland.

Is there anyone out there that recognises this story?? May be a relative of the brother Richard or one of the servants.
I can't seem to link any Ogdens to my family tree yet, but I'm sure we are related to them through my Nanna. My Nanna was born Muriel Matthew and she was related to Nuttalls and Cleggs. My Dad seems to think that she was mentioned in Dr Ogden's will.

Sound familiar anyone??

Beth

Dear Lyn T (Talbot?)

It looks as though Christopher Lawrence (a descendant presumably of Philip Henry Lawrence) is not around; but I hope you are. I too have only just come across his query.

I am descended from Nathaniel Tertius Lawrence, the father of my grandmother, and I have done an IMMENSE amount of work in the last few years about the Lawrence family, including the Ogdens, Philip Henry & his daughter Sarah Savage, and especially the circumstances under which Nathaniel Lawrence and Fanny Ogden met - in NYC not on the St Lawrence as tradition relates.

I am very happy to send any or all of this to you. My e-address is chipgc@btinternet.com; please reply to this address as well as the website.

best wishes in the fellowship of family history research

Charles GC (Bromyard, Herefordshire)
There is a Terpstra message board and you'd have better luck posting there. Normally I'd say you'd need to post more information, but Terpstra is not very common. I did find a Maud and Peter Terpstra born in Netherlands and living in Michigan in 1900. There is also a family tree on Ancestry for this family.
Good luck.

Melanie:I can't answer your question but suggest you contact Wendell Ogden: ogdens3@verizon.net Note: there is a Joseph Cowell in Fulton Co, IL during the 1860-80s that is not a part of the our line. He comes from the NJ Christian Cowell line that is confused with our PA Christian Cowell line by the LDS site records. The NJ line has two successive Christian Cowell's but their wills make it very clear they don't directly belong to our line. Both John and William Cowell (I believe both died there) and briefly Andrew Cowell Jr (one or two years) spent time in Fulton Co, IL. Andrew Jr went on to Clinton Co, IA and then to MO where he died. I have recently gotten his daughter's diary circa 1860s from a distant cousins. The diary has family lists and a diary that I have not read at this point starting in 1863. She was Cynthia Cowell Williams. My line is Joseph Cowell who came to Vermilion Co, Il and move to Barry Co, MI briefly to live next to baby brother Isaac Jacob Cowell in 1850 census. Joseph and his married daughter Rachel Cowell Rice - Asa Rice family then moved back to Georgetown, IL area in 1851-52 timeframe. My family still lives in the area.
Although my GGGGrandfather Joseph Cowell b. abt 1805 in Greene Co, PA had brothers that lived in Fulton Co, IL (William and John), I believe that Joseph Cowell's wife Sarah and later Catherine Ogden (maybe same women with two names). Sarah is with him in Greene Co, PA in early 1830s, but no death records in Vermilion Co, IL where Joseph settled, but do have records in 1860 and subsquent census to include death records for Catherine. I believe Joseph came first to Champaign Co and then Vermilion Co, IL with the Ogden's around 1831-32. I don't believe they had any roots in KY. Wendell Ogden - Ogden family genealogist seems to back that up. I believe the family is from the Andrew Ogden family from Greene Co, PA. My GGGGGrandfather was Andrew Cowell d.1828 and GGGGGGrandfather was Christian Cowell d.1815 both in Greene Co, PA. I believe the James Ogden buried near Joseph Cowell in McKendree Cemetery, Vermilion Co, IL 2 miles from where I was raised is brother-in-law. Also there is a town of Ogden near Champaign-Vermilion County line. So I am still trying to solve the mystry of Sarah and Catherine or Sarah Catherine Ogden Cowell. I will be back there this next spring and hope to find Catherine's burial site. She is not buried with Joseph and his two daughters with third daughter near by in McKendree.

I am descended from James Ogden (born 1798 in Kentucky; died 1876, Fulton county, Illinois). He married Sarah Babbitt (born 1804 in Scott county, Indiana, died 1856, Fulton county, Illinois). As to who James's parents or siblings were, my cousins are trying figure this out, however, there were other Ogdens living in close proximity with James and Sarah in Fulton county, including William Ogden (born 1804, Kentucky, died 1876, Fulton county, Illinois) married Rachael Rawling (the marriage was 1824 in Scott county, Indiana). It seems that Ogdens and Babbitts along several families migrated from Washington and Greene counties, Pennsylvania to Scott county, Indiana, then onto Knox and Fulton counties, Illinois. I don't know this help you in your research, but given the time frame and where the migration occurred, there is strong likelihood that the Ogdens you are trying to connect with are also the same Ogdens who ended up in Fulton and Knox counties, Illinois.

Stephen Heffington

Hi Noeleen

Wow, I never expected to receive a reply quite this soon, and certainly not from a relative, which I guess you must be in some way, just not sure what kind.

My grandfather was Leslie Ewart, the youngest of the kids. If it were not for your post i would not know that he had brothers or sisters and who his parents were.

Do you have more information on James, his wifes maiden name, brothers, sisters etc? Perhaps his parents details.

My grandparents divorced when my father was still young, and when my grandmother re-married the kids went with her. My father, since deceased, never used to talk much about his father, seemed a sore point in his life, and I never met my grandfather. My grandmother has also passed on, so there is little or no information available.

The next challenge I face is finding out about my grandmother. She too was not talkative about her past, but i know that she had a brother in the UK, just don't know what his name is. I guess when the immigrated from the UK they left the past behind completely, which makes my task that much more difficult.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your response.

Regards
Hi Ian - I think we must be conected some how. Read throu gh your blog and your last enter re-Ogden was definately my Granfathers family I knew he had 2 bros. James and Tom and also 2 sisters Nellie annnnd Eva. Iwas a bit surprised to see that James Ogden married Alice Hodgkins in 1887 as that was the year John Ogden ( my Grandfather was born) so did james marry twice and was there two sets of children born to different mother or father. Cannot quiet figure it out. My Father was Reginald John Ogden-Born 1920 at Wheelock as were his brother (Cyril-still lives in Wheelock) and Irene who lives in Elworth. As far as I kn ew my Dads family always lived there after John Married my Grandmother (Jessie Brandeth). I also know through my Dad and Uncle that James(their Grandfather) run a paper shop in Elworth as they both went there from Wheelock to deliver newspapers for him. Most of my info came from family and Uncle Cyril and Aunty Irene are both still with us Will Have to get all my info and peice it to-tegther? Tried to e-mail you but site would not accept. My e-mail is joemar@shaw.ca. Please feel free to contct me.
Re: missing OGDEN family in 1891 (England) census

Hi I am almost sure they are my great grandparents. and John Ogden is my grandfather. As far as I am aware I do not think the family moved far. GGrandfather James has a paper in in Elworth, Sandbach, Crewe, Cheshire. My Grandfather John was born in Elworth and went to school there. He married and went to Wheelock to stay. Can this be the same family? M

Re: George Wilkerson Griffin married Temperance Ann "Annie" Ogden in Union County, Arkansas

I am the great-granddaughter of GeorgevWilkerson Griffin & Annie Ogden Griffin. Susie Griffin Housworth, born December18, 1896, died July 1991, was my beloved grandmother. I knew her brothers and sisters, Tom, Lon, Cliff, Ada Ferguson, Sid, & Howell. Sarah (known as Sally, and Martha, known as Mattie, died in their early 20's. I am just beginning to search for ancestry and your post is the first I have found. You seem to have more info than I do on George & Annie. My grandmother & Aunt Ada said their mother was Caddo Indian, but the name Temperance Ann doesn't sound Indian! Info would be wonderful.
