OLA - Joseph J., 84, Mine 37, Richland Township, went to be with the Lord Nov. 17, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Aug. 28, 1921, in Seanor, son of Joseph J. and Magdalena (Kavalien) Ola. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Helen L. (Mihaley) Ola, who passed away July 28, 2005; an infant son; infant sister, Klara; and niece, Susan Goldstein. Survived by children, Joseph Ola, married to the former Barbara Rose, Windber; George Ola, married to the former Barbara Tinsmith, Johnstown; Helen "Karen," wife of Joseph Podrasky, Windber; Richard Ola, married to the former Dorothy Gindlesperger, Johnstown; and Andrew "Tom" Ola, Windber; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Co. and former coal miner at Berwind White Coal Co. Member of UMWA and former member of Walnut Grove Hunting -- Fishing Club. Joseph was an avid camper and fisherman. Former member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Windber, and member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Windber, where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, the Rev. Leonard E. Voytek VF. Committal, St. Mary Roman Catholic Cemetery, Windber. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber, where vigil service will be held Sunday.

Ola - History of the name

Supposedly we have some Spanish blood in our family tree, and I suspect it comes in the name of OLA. As my line was in MS, I think that the OLA may have been a Spaniard in the LA territory before that area became part of the United States in the 1800's.

Any historical info would be appreciated.
