Hi I am Philip Hodkinson my grandmother was Jane and she was the neice of old mrs Finch and the aunt of matte and jim also aunt to mrs turner of woodhouse lane. I used to know a Leon who stayed with Matte and jim a lot.

I suspect the name came about for the saem reason in mane places. In the West Midlands, the town of Oldbury existed long before Birmingham grew from an isolated farmhouse. As the city grew, and farming declined, it would attract workers from the older settlements and some guy called John who moved from the "Old Town" would likely get nicknamed "John of the Oldb-urg" which got corrupted to John Oldbury. Like Smith (every village had an unrelated Smith), they were probably not related.

There is also an Oldbury near Bridgnorth. It appears although I have not been there yet that there is a lot of my distant relative who come from there.

Have tried to find out why the first moved from there to West Bromwich without much success.

I am not from Manchester itself but from Wigan. As far as I am aware, I am the only Oldbury in my family who has ever lived in that area. I was born there but moved away as a child. My mother's family are Turners and Finches and they have been there for many generations.

The Oldburys are mostly from the Birminghams area. The town of Oldbury exited for centuries before Birmingham was established in about 7th century. Due to its location, Birmingham expanded quite quickly, attracting in people from surrounding towns such as Oldbury. So if your name was John and you lived in the Middle Ages and moved from Oldbury to Brimingham, you would likely be named John of Oldbury. You were not necessarily related to the many other "Oldburys" who moved in the same way.

I am still looking for info on my family. I was Karen Campbell but have since divorced and remarried. If Paul Oldbury is still out there it would be great to get intouch and see what new info we might have. It has been a long break for me so I hope to be able to jump right in again.

I have my grandfathers birthdate and birthplace just haven't located it as of yet. I think it's April 6th, the same as my grandmother's his first wife. I'll get specifics to you tomorrow.

My Great Grandmother was Louissa Oldberry. I was wondering if her last name might have originated from Oldbury. She was born in Indiana. Her first child was born 12 Aug 1881, so I am assuming she was born around 1855-1860. What a stretch, thanks Paul

You mentioned in your first message that you could get your grandfathers birth date. Try to get that, and also where abouts he was born or the general area that your family came from. If we have an area, then we can start searching the records. Let me know!!

honestly i don't know. i just know that i've got a lot of relatives in south texas. I would truly like to trace my ancestry back to where it orginated. I don't have a lot of information except about who lives here in texas.

I live in the united states and was born here. My grandfather's name is Louis Dean Oldbury. I don't know his birthday but i can get it for you if you'd like. My birthday is June 10, 1975.
