Hi Christine
Hope this gets to you.
I spotted your note dated 1999 ( 12 yrs ago) so this is a stab in the dark. I just got back from Tassie two weeks ago 2012 and stayed in Deloraine and drove around Golden Valley. Historical society said they've never heard of the O'Leary clan, only the Donohue family but I knew they come from out there in them woods somewhere :) My mother is Margaret O'Leary, daughter of William john O'leary and grand daughter of Timothy ( Edward ) O'leary and Ellen Donohue. My mum is still alive at 78 and has been wondering for years what happened to all the O'leary clan reason why I've been down there trying to find out for her peace of mind. William John O'Leary served in WWI and has his name on the Ross Anzac memorial for his efforts, his war info is on the net. He married Rebecca Nancy Davern in Melbourne,Has two children John O'Leary born 1928 in Melbourne and Margaret Nancey O'Leary ( my mum )born in 1934 Bondi Sydney. They all lived in Days Road Bondi and he and my grandmother are buried in Waverley Cemetery Eastern Suburbs Sydney. His son John never married and had no children and died 2009 in St Vincent Hospital Syd and cremated. My mums still manages an Irish jig occasionally and has five living children and lives just south of Wollongong NSW. Love to get hold of a full family tree. Cheers. Angie. email: thegreenfairies@hotmail.com

Hope to hear from you

Angie

Hannah was sister to my g-grandfather Humphrey Moynihan who left Gneeveguilla along with his brother Timothy and emigrated to the U.S. and resided in Yonkers, N.Y.. Hannah visited the U.S. but returned to Ireland. I have info on all of her children's families except for Paddy's. Let me know how to contact you and I'll be happy to pass along the info I have.
I just got off the phone with my mom and apparently her Grandmother (Ellen "Nellie" O'Leary) was either from Meennagishagh (which is basically right next to Gneeveguilla or part of it) or Meentoges, banard or Bawnard. All are in the same are. Maybe that can help connect the ties. All the O'Leary's were from there and it was/is a VERY small town. So somehow I bet this is a connection. Does this help in your research from your end of things?

Dan, this family was from Gneeveguilla. Aeneas emigrated to Oregon in 1929. Mary (Heraty) lived in Chicago had 7 children before her husband was killed in a scaffolding accident. Last report had her in New York. Paddy remained in Gneeveguilla and died in 1994. Timothy left for London in 1936 and died in 1995. There might be some connection with the families but I don't have enough info to connect the dots yet.

Are they from Gneeveguilla? My great grandmother was Ellen O'Leary and I'm pretty sure we're related some famous accordian player, Johnny O'Leary. Does that help? I know there's a Daniel in the mix too. I'd have to go back and look. ellen was born in 1883 and married Peter O'sullivan. They emmigrated to boston. Her father MIGHT have been Jeremiah and mother was possibly Catherine, but that's up in the air. Had a sister anne and brothers Daniel and charles. Not sure we have the right connection but maybe somehow it is?
Re: Keady O'Leary, Bantry Co. Cork

I am related to Carolyn Cain Hart (see first post in this thread). Our Keady O'Leary (born circa 1853/54) was from the townland of Drombroe / Drombrow in rural Bantry. I have recently discovered that Keady (who emmigrated to New Zealand in 1875) sponsored the passage of a Daniel O'Leary (21 years old) out to New Zealand in 1879. Daniel was from the townland of Inchiclough /Inchclough (and other spelling variants!) also in Bantry. I have not yet proved that the two men are related but it seems likely.

We may yet be related as Keady is a very uncommon forename. There were no Keady O'LEARYs in either the 1901 or 1911 Irish census but there were two Keady LEARYs. Their details are as follows: Keady John LEARY was living in the townland of Dromdoneen, Bantry in 1911 (he was 25) with his uncle James Manning (grandmother, from the 1901 Census, was Catherine Manning). The other Keady LEARY, a labourer, was 60 in 1901 and living with his son David (aged 21) at 12 Grove Lane, Doneraile, Cork.

Would love to hear more about your Keady. Do you have his date of birth and parents' names etc.?

County Cork Ireland O'leary family

I have my Jerimiah O'leary- b. 11 Jan. 1801 d. 22 Apirl 1850 (dropsy) was a Stonemason

State of South Carolina Petition of Jerry O'leary petioner York District, was born in Ireland, the County of Cork and did arrive Norfolk in the State of Virginia in 1821. Hath resided in the US eversince within the Jurisdicion of this state for the past 2 yrs and is now 25 yrs of age and intention to become citizen 23 Oct. 1824

Then have come across these letters which mention his sister Ellen and brother Dan. I am wondering if anyone has connections in Ireland to help me out:

29 July 1829, Sullivan[']s Island, Ellen O[']Leary, to Jeremiah O[']Leary, Yorkville (commenting on the recent illness of "my best friend in America Mr. Simons" who "was taken verry sick with a Paralytic Fit," and urging her brother to remove to Charleston where he could "get employment as Bricklayers are verry scarse in town [and] the People complain of their bad work").
5 Aug. 1829, Sullivan[']s Island, Ellen O[']Leary, to Jeremiah O[']Leary, Yorkville (scolding her brother for his lack of written communication and congratulating him upon his forthcoming marriage on behalf of Mr. Simons and Mrs. Ball).
15 Oct. 1830, Charleston, Ellen O[']Leary, to Jeremiah O[']Leary, [Yorkville] (mentioning their brother, Dan, recently arrived from Ireland, who needed money in order to travel to Yorkville, and reminding him of his promise made six years earlier upon leaving Ireland—"you brought God to wittness that you would be a Father and a protector to me in the Land of strangers").

I also have not been able to trace Ellen and Dan in the US. Most likely because If Ellen was married it was not recorded or perhaps Ellen and Dan used different spellings of O'Leary.
but I would also like to find the Ireland Connection.

thank you
Kquerna
Primarily what this board is for is questions about transcription rules, and various aspects of the project. While I wish you luck in your research, you are unlikely to find family connections here.

Hello fellow researchers!

After attending last year's O'Leary Clan reunion in Inchigeelagh, Co. Cork, the homeland of the O'Learys I met a Daniel Bhui O'Leary in Kiskeam, Co. Cork and he agreed to participate in our O'Leary Clan DNA project. His test results came back with a six generation match with my DNA (about 150 years) and verified that I am a descendant of the Jeremiah Bhui O'Leary Clan of Tooreenanean, b. 1751, and father of the poet Maire Bhui O'Leary, b. 1774, whose youngest brother Richard, b. 1795 may have been my grt.grt.grf. Furthermore, our family historian Peter O'Leary in Ballingeary, with whom I also share a ten generation DNA match has researched the Bhui clan back to an O'Leary Chieftain in the late 1400's who had four sons in the early 1500's Cornelius, (Conchobhar) Daniel, (Domnhall) Jeremiah (Diarmuid) & Timothy. (Teighe or Tadgh) Peter descends from Cornelius and I descend from Daniel, along with Kiskeam Dan. This leads me to believe that Terry O'Leary in England and Mike O'Leary in Australia & I also share the Bhui ancestry, along with a few others on our DNA chart, and our roots go back to Bantry (Ardnaturrish) & Wales. (Dowlais, Monmouthshire) I'm still looking for my grt.grf. Michael's roots and have narrowed it down to two theories, which I won't get into now. Of course Terry & I have always known that we are related because his daughter Clare is a clone of one of my aunts, and he resembles my 2nd cousin Tom.

I have been looking over a few hundred old O'Leary website inquiries, all of which instigated this report. If there are any more of you out there who can claim a Bhui connection I would like to hear from you. Please contact me at dbjoleary@aol.com

Thanks.

Don

Go to free www.familysearch.org. On the "Search Records" tab find "Record Search Pilot" (it seems to work best with Mozilla Firefox web browser). Since you gave enough info in your post I did a search on Sylvester Oleary and a search location of New York (When you enter a location you need to wait a second and then the program will give you suggested places and you must select one of these.) After that I got one page of Sylvester Oleary/Leary/Olary/Lary's (there's alot of variations of Olearys) and there he was in Cohoes. I figured that must be him. People do move around but generally not to much. Also Sylvester and Lawrence are not common first names so there's not a lot of them. With the info you gave it made it easy to narrow down.
Once I had an approximate birth year and where they were born that made it all the more easier. I just did a quick look so I'm sure there's more info out there.

Good Luck
Mike

You will find Sylvester b. 1889 and Genevieve b. 1891 living with their father Lawrence b. 1852 in the 1900 census for Cohoes district, Albany Co., New York. They are listed under surname "Leary". You will also find Lawrence living with his parents Lawrence and Ann in the 1870 census of Cohoes, Albany Co, New York and in the 1860 census of Herkimer Co., New York. In the 1860 census the surname is "O Lary". Unforunately Lawrence's wife is not listed in the 1900 census which means she either died or left after Genevieve was born in 1891.

Good Luck
Mike
