Oliver - Maybe Daniel - Sussex County, New Jersey

Hi,
I'm looking for information about the husband of Sarah Mann; she was born Oct. 1768 in Philadelphia, daughter of Ernest and Mary Mann of Oxford Twp, NJ. Sarah is listed in her father's will, written in 1804, as Sary Oliver. The will was proved in 1813 after Ernest died. In 1826 there was a petition to the Warren County Orphan's Court by Daniel Oliver, an heir-at-law of Sarah, listing other heirs-at-law as John Oliver, Mary Oliver Cleaver (wife of Nathaniel Cleaver), and Peter Oliver, a minor under 20 years old. It would appear from this document that both parents are gone at this point (1826). We don't know when Sarah died, and we don't know but suspect her husband's name was also Daniel. There was a Daniel Oliver in the 1793 tax list of Oxford Twp. and a Daniel Oliver who served in the Pennsylvania Insurrection in 1794 (found in the Records of officers and Men of NJ in wars from 1791-1815).

Does anybody have any information about a Daniel Oliver or any other Oliver from Oxford or surrounding townships in Sussex County? I would appreciate any feedback or leads.

thanks,
Mary Ann

Hi Cousin -

The J. Oliver you are looking at is really Theodorick Oliver - the J. is an indexers mistake - when you look at the referenced Census, the J. is really a T.

Theodorick is my great-great grandfather through his second wife Lucy B. (Holloway) (Thomas) Oliver. Her maiden name was Holloway, first marriage to a Thomas.

I am related through their last child Albert Baxter Oliver, born 1853 in Natchitoches Parish.

I will contact you by email with additional information

Hello,

I don't know if we're connected, but my great-grandparents lived between Columbia and Ouachita counties. My great-grandfather was John Oliver b. about 1879 and his father was Huston Oliver b. about 1856. I found a John Oliver born around 1858, who was most likely Huston's brother who lived mostly in Texas. After that, I hit a brick wall.

Shanetta

My father is Hearsey Paul Sproull, Jr. He is currently 96 years old and lives in Galveston Texas. My name is Sharon French - I had to use my daughter's name for this as somehow mine would not work on this website. Uncle George Sproull and his wife Louise are both deceased. George Sproull, Jr. still lives in the Shreveport Louisiana area. I am not sure where their daughter Florence lives as we have lost contact with her. Melvin Sproull's wife Helen is also still in Shreveport. I can ask my father about the Oliver's. I do not know much of the history, but, of course, have heard of them all of my life. Please email me at sfrench06@gmail.com
Hi
I too am looking for Olivers in New York, but maybe not these particular ones.
There was a James Oliver aged 26, carpenter, and a Samuel Oliver aged 28, painter, Sarah aged 27, Kitty aged 30, Betsey aged 6, Sarah aged 5 and Charles aged 2, who arrived in New York from London in 1833 aboard 'Brunswick'. Perhaps these are yours.
My Olivers were jewellers and silk weavers from London.

Samuel Oliver(s) in New York City in early 1800's

I am hoping someone has information on one or several Samuel Oliver's who lived in New York City at the beginning of the 19th century. I believe they might be related through my gg grandfather Henry Lewis King.

This is what I know. Henry Lewis King was born in 1812 in New York City, married Clarissa Gridley (daughter of Ansel Gridley and Clarissa Sweet) in New York City in 1834, and moved to San Francisco, California with his wife, mother-in-law and several children in 1853. One of Henry and Clarissa's babies was named SAMUEL OLIVER KING, and since other children were named after family members I suspected that this one was too.

Although I am not sure who Henry's father is, I am considering the possibility that it was Thomas King, a carpenter (also Henry's profession) who lived in the same area as Henry. In the 1827 Longworth's directory, Thomas is living at 96 Warren and "Widow Oliver" at 69 Warren. It could be a coincidence, or perhaps the widow Oliver is the mother of Thomas's wife and either lived across the street or at the same place (if the numbers were reversed on one location, as they could have been).

Next, there is a Samuel Oliver, builder living in the area In 1834, he lives as Spring and Varrick, while Thomas King lives at 220 Varrick (and Clarissa Gridley, widow of Ansel, Henry's soon-to-be mother-in-law, lives at 207 Varrick).

In the 1837 directory there are two Samuel Oliver's. One, a carpenter lives at 136 Eldridge ( I don't know where that is). The other, however, Samuel the builder, lives at 66 Charlton (near Varrick). Also at this same address are Henry Lewis King (with wife and children) and Clarissa Gridley, widow of Ansel. Unless there is a really strange coincidence, this Samuel the builder must be related to my Henry. I am guessing an uncle rather than grandfather (both because a grandfather would possibly be too old to be working, and because I suspect the "widow" Oliver indicates grandpa was deceased by 1827). Perhaps the other carpenter Samuel is the son of the Charlton one and thus a cousin of Henry.

I find it significant that all of these people were builders and/or carpenters. Even though it may have been a common enough occupation, it seems a family trade as well. In San Francisco Henry (the carpenter) called himself a "builder" and was the construction supervisor on many of San Francisco's pre-earthquake landmarks. Did he learn this trade from grandparents and parents?

Does anyone have information on any of these Samuels that might explain their relationship to my King's?

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Sue. I sent you a note before under Waldo Olga. Thank you for your reply.
Sorry - not to familiar with this Ancestry thing - it keeps telling me I don't exist and has me changing my password and username. If I am allowed to post, maybe we could exchange emails? Mine is cjanewski@gmail.com. This might be easier.

My Grandfather was Walter Mathews Oliver - son of Jesse Armstrong and Thomas Stuart Oliver. My grandfather immigrated to Canada in about 1916 with some of his sisters.

In 1970, my grandfather took us to Bunny Nubber to visit his aunt or cousin Martha Armstrong. I do not have many memories as I was quite young, but I have always wanted to go back and my daughter and I are planning a trip and I would like to go and see Bunny Nubber (this is what my dad called it) if it still exists to show her our history.

If you would like information about the Oliver family, I can help with this.

So nice to meet you.

Cheryl

Hi Waldo Olga!

WOW...So you say Bonnynubber was your Grandfather's grandmother's home? They lived on Innishmore till about 1856 when they moved to Bonnynubber- I assume because since Sarah was an only child, Bonnynubber was left to her after her father died- thus why they moved with some of their children there. Montgomery and SArah's daughter Jane Armstrong married her cousin George Copeland. She traveled to America abt 1876/77 and they were married shortly after that. George was the son of Hugh Copeland of Enniskillen (son of James Copeland of Lisbellaw) and Nicholina Armstrong (Montgomery's sister). After Hugh died (1841) Nicholina and 6 of her 7 stepchildren and her 5 children went to America (1848). By 1856 the 6 step children had gone on to Australia- Nicholina and her children settled in Brooklyn, NY! George Copeland and Jane Armstrong were my g grandparents and they lived their lives in Brooklyn, NY.

I can find out info in ref to Bonnynubber. I have not been doing much gen work lately since I watch my grand daughter..BUT I have a cousin in Dublin who has gone there often. There was also an outside gentleman last year looking into the Armstrong/Buchanan relation to Pres. James Buchanan. I KNOW there are still relatives there since I sent pictures and info to them last year.

I do not know if I can post an address here....but...it is (*)

Please if you wish to contact me-please do! It is always GREAT to meet a fellow cousin! I know there were children of a Hugh Copeland from Enniskillen that went to Canada...almost same circumstances as mine...and often confused..BUT his b date was later. I still believe he was most likely a cousin/nephew of mine. Well...would love to hear from you!

Sue

I understand that Isaac and Richard Oliver married Conkright women. I believe that I am a relative to Isaac, as my grandmother's father was Isaac Oliver of KY, and she named one of her son's Isaac Conkright Pasley. What I really would like to know is what nationality are the Olivers and where did they come from as far back as can be recalled?

Hello,
I am working a brickwall regarding my Grand Aunt Laverna Borneman. In 1937 she applied for a Social Security number from Los Angeles California using the name Laverna Mary Oliver. She is living in the Commodore Hotel and working at Walkers on Broadway. However she is missing until 1945 when she is mentioned in her mothers obituary as Laverna Oliver Barr and being from Chicago.

Does anyone know of a Mr Oliver living in California in the late 1930's married to a Laverna.

Thanks to all for any help or guidance you can provide.

Jim Borneman

looking for (John) Owen Tully (Oliver?)

My great uncle, Owen Tully(born c. 1857)in Ireland, stayed in England (Lancashire?)after doing some seasonal work with his father(c.1873). Parents were Patrick and Margaret (Grogan) Tully, of Cornacartha, South of Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo. All his siblings later emigrated to American except his next younger sister, Catherine. Word has it that Owen participated in the Boar War (with British military), and eventually emigrated to Australia (probably early 1900's). It was said that he changed his name to John Oliver, or maybe John Owen Tully. (He may have married someone named Phoebe in England.) Would love to hear from anyone who may know something about my great uncle. Thank you!
