Not ALL Olmste(a)ds descend from Richard & James -- 1632 on the Lyon from Essex, England. Jabez Olmsted appears in Ware, MA in the mid-1700s and Stephen Olmstead appears in Lycoming/Clinton Co., PA in the mid-1800s and DNA has a 5000 year plus separation from the Essex lines.

Hello,

I hope you still have access to ancestry! I am a descendant of Alice Anna Olmstead (1856-1942) m. Lawrence Dunn (1847-1941). She is the granddaughter of Moses and Alice Olmstead. Alice Anna and Lawrence are buried in Our Lady of LaSalette Cemetery. You mention you have access to the Olmstead Genealogy and I would like to compare notes. I'm trying to confirm the Olmstead connection with my records.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kim Courtin

Some of my family moved to Buffalo but they were all from Syracuse with roots in Oneonta and Davenport New York. But if you go back far enoungh all the Olmsteads came from James Olmstead who arrived from England in 1643 on the ship The Lyon. James settled Hartford, Conn and a few generations later a lot of the family moved to New York State.

I was able to find a little more information regarding my initial post. I found Lina Olmsted/Olmstead-Gyger remarried after her husband, Edwin Gyger, died. Lina married Samuel Burnell of LaSalle Co, IL in 1897.

Furthermore, Phebe's maiden name was Havlin. She married Edgar S. Olmstead/Olmstead. He was born in 1822 and died in Neponset, Bureau Co., IL in 1898.

If anyone has anything further they could add, it would be greatly appreciated.

Larry Gyger
Lsgyger@atlanticbb.net

I have over 100 Samuel's a number of which would have been in that time period. I do not have occupational type data on but a few of the 100,000+ in my files. Considering that there were hundred's of carpenter/cabinet makers in the 1800s it wouldn't surprise me that there were some that were Olmstead or Olmsted who never gained fame but just did work for their communitites.

hi

i am not related but am searching for info on a samuel olmste?? the signature is on the bottom of a drawer in a piece of furniture built around 1820-40. being how things were signed it would indicate he was the maker and perhaps the signature too long to have completed the spelling.
i would appreciate any info you may have is a cabinet or furniture maker was in the family at that time

thanks for reading this odd request.

I haven't posted anything for several years, so I'm hoping maybe someone has uncovered some information or a new researcher checks this Board.
Supposedly, there's a Phebe Olmstead listed in the 1900 Census living in Neponset Twp, Bureau Co, IL as head of household. Listed with her is a Leslie E. Gyger, supposedly her grandson. Leslie's mother I believe to be Lina Olmstead, who was married to Edwin Gyger.
I'm looking for any and all information relating to any of these three people - Phebe, Lina or Leslie.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Larry Gyger

Additionally I think that he might have had a sister (Almira O'Dell)

But I cannot find anything on her also. In the obit from the Catskills it says he was 42 years old which would put his birth at around 1875.

What I did find out was the marriage to Margaret Place only lasted about a year or at least she moved back in with her parents by 1905.

There was no mention of Walter in the 1905 NY Census, but he shows up on the 1910 US Census living with his grandparents.

Raymond and Julia Place in Delaware, NY. With no Charles around.

In the newspaper for the marriage of margaret place and charles olmstead they list him as Charles B. Olmstead, and it was in 1904.

In the Obit its just listed as Charles Olmstead.

Thanks for any thing else anyone has.
I believe Charles died as a paupper in 1916 and Margaret remarried to a Ward Wickham.

Charles and Margaret had a child in 1904 - Walter I. Olmstead

Walter died in 1930 but he married a Margaret E Terpak and had a child Charles W. Olmstead (1926).

Any information about this line or the surnames that are connecting to this line please let me know Thanks.

Dave

Re: Isabel Olmsted Disbrow of Wilton, CT

I am not related but am researching a family which married a son of the Samuel Olmsted who married Betsey Disbrow in 1793. He was a son of Gardiner and was older than Betsey because she was his second wife. He had children from a first marriage to Sarah Green. You can read a large "Genealogy of the Olmsted family in America" (1912) free on Google Books. The Samuel who married Disbrow (they mistakenly spelled it Bisbrow) is discussed on p. 202. A son of his first marriage was called "Blind Sam" who married Esther Barnes as his second wife. He remained in Wilton CT.
However, I don't find Isabel or Ezebel - she may have been missed. But perhaps you could check every possible father one by one. Early settlers of Wilton came mostly from Norwalk, Ridgefield or Westport/Fairfield. It was very common in those days for a pair of brothers/sisters to marry another pair, so it could be Nathan - hard to prove. Olmstead is a very large family!

Paul Keroack

Hi Keith,
My dad was George Edwin son of Leonard John. You have had contact with my dad by written letter, I think. My sister Donna has communicated with you in the past on-line. I wish I knew more about The Holmstead. I just remember my dad saying it was "really nice". I found it mentioned quite often when I read some of the old newspaper archieves. Announcements were put in the paper for bridal showers, general meetings etc. It seems it was a popular establishment in it's day. We have no one left to ask these questions of as dad passed on in 2007. I've retired so have time to dabble in this addictive research. ( though I'm not too experienced at it) And by some twist of fate, I live not far from where the Olmstead family came to Ontario from America. Remarried in 08, moved from B.C. to Ontario. I was able to go to Burritt's Rapids this summer to look around.
I'm glad you saw my post. Are we able to trade email addresses?
All the best
Georgina

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, Jan. 13, 1911, page 3:
Joseph E. Olmstead was born in Brewer County, Ill., Dec. 9th, 1845.
He enlisted in Henshaw's Independent Battery Illinois Volunteers, Light Artillery. After serving his time, he re-enlisted and served to the close of the war when he received an honorable discharge.
Shortly after the war he moved to Marshall county, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Addie L. McCollough Oct. 3rd, 1868. They moved to Cloud Co., Kans., Sept. 26, 1879. To them were born four children, Mrs. Anna Pilcher, of Florence, Colo., Jas. E. Olmstead, of Glasco, Wm. H. Olmstead, of Hot Springs, Ark., and Mrs. Mary A. Hillhouse, of Glasco, all of whom, with the companion of his years, a brother and a great company of friends mourn his sudden departure. He was a member of the Glasco Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, whose beautiful and impressive services and fraternal spirit were greatly in evidence. The deceased has long been a resident of our community, and his genial spirit and cheerful countenance will leave a void in all our hearts. Be it known to all, that Glasco has lost a splendid citizen. In the sittings of the Lodge, he will be missed, for though a member for less than a year, yet he was respected, trusted, honored. Truly his works do follow him. Although subject to spells of severe pain and suffering his death, so sudden and so painful, was unexpected. After an hour's illness and excruciating pain, he died at his home in Glasco, Wednesday evening, Jan. 4th, 1911. The funeral, in charge of A.G. Sutcliff, was from the house Sunday, Jan. 8th. Burial in Glasco Cemetery, the Masonic Lodge having charge.

marriage of James Olmstead to Zella A. Christie, 1903, Kansas

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, Dec. 18, 1903, page 1:
Wedding Bells
It is with pleasure that we record the marriage of Mr. James E. Olmstead of Glasco, Kansas to Miss Zella L. Christie of Scottsville, Kansas, on the 9th day of December 1903 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Xavier Christie, two miles east of Scottsville, in Cloud County. The ceremony was performed in the evening at 4:30, in the presence of the family and a large number of relatives and invited guests by Rev. Benj. F. McMillan of Glasco. The attendants were Miss Nellie Hillhouse and Mr. Joseph M. Davidson of Glasco and Miss Mayme Montgomery and Mr. Henry Christie of Scottsville. The ring girl of honor was the five year old niece of the bride, Miss Eulalie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Christie, who performed her part in the ceremony to the full admiration of the entire company.
The beautiful wedding march was played by Miss Sayde Harn of Scottsville, and this was introduced by two appropriate selections relating to the home sung by Miss Minnie Brouillette. The order of the ceremony was: first, the officiating minister escorting the ring girl who carried a fragrant carnation on which was fastened the wedding ring. Next came the four attendants, two by two, and following them the bride and groom. Each took their place under the wedding arbor, which was in readiness for the happy event in one of the beautiful parlors of the home. This was a veritable paradise of lace curtains and rich drapery with silken bows and knots, and decorated with roses, holly and ferns of rarest beauty and fragrance. The holly and ferns came from British Columbia near the Washington line, fifty miles from the Pacific coast. The roses and chrysanthemums were from friends at Weymore, Nebraska. Beneath this wealth of beauty and fragrance the words of the ceremony and those of the vows were spoken, and the ring, symbol of the true love which has no end, was placed upon the bride's finger, and the solemn words were said by the minister that declared them "husband and wife until death do separate." The entire bridal party wore flowers during the ceremony and the evening.
After the many loving good wishes for long life and much joy, all were conducted to the spacious dining room where a royal feast was waiting. Space forbids telling of the numerous courses of good things which were dispensed to the happy throng. At a late hour the guests departed, and the bride and groom, with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Olmstead, took the train that night for Hot Springs, Arkansas. The newly married people will remain there about three weeks, after which they will return to Glasco to be a part of Glasco society.
A goodly number from Glasco and vicinity attended the wedding, among who were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Olmstead, parents of the groom.....(following was a list of people who attended the wedding.)
List of Presents
(an extensive list followed, with description and the name of the donor.)

Olmsted family

I am wondering if anyone knows where I could find some historical information on the famous Olmsted family. They are the family related to Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous arctitect landscrape designer who designed hundreds of things throughout the country. Getting some pictures of them, and other documentatial information would be a great help. If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
Stephen.
I wasn't trying to jump to conclusions...I was just trying to understand all this stuff. It can be overwelming. I don't know of any living male Olmsteds on my side. Ok...maybe I am confused. My brothers would be part of the Olmsted line...huh? See...totally confused. I was thinking of my great aunts sons. I am not sure if they are still alive...I think they are in their 90's or close. Please let me know.

Don't jump to conclusions so fast. DNA testing has ruled out descendants of Jabez Olmsted, or of his adapted grandson, Jabez Jr. and Merium Hussey, being related to the James and Richard Olmsted lines, in recent times. You should find a living male Olmsted related to you and arrange for him to submit a saliva sample for DNA testing to confirm your descent.

There is a DNA special for Olmsteds right now. Contact Barbara Taylor for current prices.

Carl Hommel
