Any Olney out there have an Olney / Irvine connection in their tree? My gggg-grandfather was Benjamin Olney Irvine of OH. I have reached a dead end with his father John Irvine, but thought that I might get somewhere if Benjamin's mother was an Olney.

Thanks much! - Roger

I have been unable to find out when and where my great great aunt Eunice Wilgus Olney died. She was the daughter of Clark Wilgus and Eliza Olney. She first married John Rector and then was the second wife of Omar A. Olney of Naples, NY. I've found her in census data but I lose track of her after the last mention of her spending time with Omar's daughter Mildred after Omar's death. The last mention has Eunice a resident of Penn Yann (where her sister Harriet Wilgus Sheldon Finger lived) and visiting relatives in Western NY in 1940. Harriet, my great grandmother, died in 1947.

Sandy Gianni

James Oney of Surry VA not the son of Benjamin Oney of Tazwell VA

"A Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Olney..." By James H Olney in 1889 has long linked James Oney, (b. by 1774 Southampton Co. VA d. 4Oct1801-27Oct1801 Surry Co. VA) m. by 1795 Southampton Co. VA Mazey (BOOTH) ONEY TILLOT MADDERA, to the Benjamin Oney who was the Deskin Valley by 1773. I have recently received, from another researcher a deed and a will. Taken together and adding my own research I am 99% certain this James Oney is the son of Thomas Oney who was the son of Leonard Oney. This Leonard Oney may probably had brothers John and Benjamin who were all the sons of Leonard Oney who had deed transactions in Isle of Wight Co. VA in the 1730's. You can visit my web site at:
http://home.netcom.com/~vicdlee/victorleesgenealogysite
to see more details.

More research on this family needs to be done to tie up and link the loose ends, narrow the dates and find the names of spouses. Contrary the the Olney book, this Oney family seems to havae been Patriots in the American Revolution. Some transcibed deed indexes show the name Oney and Olney used interchangeably. So the change of name is not the result of hiding Tory sympathies. The original deeds and deed entries would have to be examined to confirm this.

The bottom line is if this Oney family is descendant of Thomas Olney of Rhode Island, they would have to tie into his family at a different place. What is clear is Leonard Oney moved to Isle of Wight Co. VA from somewhere else by the 1730's. Is anyone else working on this line?

OLNEY Family Bible found

I have some important information for anyone interested in the OLNEY family. I received an email from a woman who found my Hatfield website and she asked me if I wanted copies from an OLNEY family bible that had information on the family of Mathias Hatfield in it. I told her yes.

The woman, who knows the owner of the bible, went to where the bible is located and took photos of the bible and sent them to me, as her "genealogical act of kindness." She is not related to the families listed in the bible. I have transcribed the information contained in the bible and I am sharing the information and images in the hope that another researcher might find this OLNEY family information helpful to their own research.

I believe that this bible information is information that has never been shared before.

The bible is an original bible dated 1883 and was a given as a gift in 1887. The last notation in the bible appears to be 1919. The bible contains family information on primarily the OLNEY and HATFIELD families. I do NOT know how the Olney and Hatfield family are related.

I posted all the information from the bible on a website at

http://hometown.aol.com/cmelaine/page1.html

The photos on the website are not very large. If you would like to see larger photos and all the photos of this bible, go to http://community.webshots.com/user/elaine5171

If you are connected to the OLNEY family then I encourage you to study the information on the webpage.

I have no more information other than what I've posted on the website. I have no more photos of this bible. I do not own the bible. I am not related to the Mathias Hatfield family.

Elaine Hatfield Powell

I have a copy of "Warren Olney 1841-1921" on loan and have found a wealth of information on the Olney and Green families. It contains the beginning of an autobiography that Warren Olney started before his death. It also contains his recollection of the Civil War Battle of Shiloh. I'll post some tidbits when I have more time to digest the contents. Anyone with specific questions?

When I get it back from mom I'll be able to answer a lot of questions people have about the name. Then it goes to my daughter. All of the first born have had the name. My youngest is named after my grandmother's older sister Channez Olney born about 1850

Olney Book

I have a copy of a book on the descendants of Thomas Olney who came to Salem Mass in 1635 and was one of the founders of Rhode Island with Roger Williams. The book is by James H.
Olney Memorial on .pdf !!

Just to let everyone know, I have donated my copy of the Olney Memorial, ~294pgs in Adobe .pdf format, to a Whipple family web site. It is available for free download if you have either the ability to let your browser run for a few hours or you've got broadband.

http://www.whipple.org/docs/books/index.html#OlneyThomas$RR$...

Be aware there are a few glaring errors in this work by James H. Olney in 1889. Most of these are noted in LaVerne's tree here or J.H. Olsson's on GenCircles. (such as Tho. Olney the immigrant was married to Marie Ashton, not Mary Small-- evidence may be pointing to Mary Small being his mother).

Also, after my jaw dropped with envy over this Whipple web site I began asking around the different Olney Message Boards to see if any one is interested in helping start our own. It was awful nice of the Whipple family to add our book to their site, but somehow that makes me feel disappointed that we didn't have a site to post it to for ourselves. I'd be willing to create and post it as long as contributions like articles, notes, books etc. would come in from all of you. Let me know.....Later, CJO

Hezekiah Olney m. Orpha Hawkins 1774 RI

Looking for information on children of this couple, or info on either one's siblings.

Hezekiah is the son of Jeremiah Olney (1708-1756) and Susanna Browne (1715-?). His birth is not recorded, but probably occurred about 1742 in Smithfield. Orpha Hawkins is the daughter of Joseph Hawkins and most likely Mary Smith, born about 1750 in Providence. They were married 27 Mar 1774 in Johnston, RI.

Their children are Joseph, Elizabeth, Rachel, Tryphena, Jeremiah and Hezekiah.
Olneys related to Hill or Matteson in RI?

I wonder if any of you Olneys have a Hill or Matteson in your family tree. James M. Hill of Coventry and Providence, RI married Rhoda Lemira Woodward and they named a child James Olney Hill in about 1847-1850. Maiden names were often used as male middle names in RI and I wonder if there were Olneys back there somewhere?

Cousins, I have been trying and trying to locate more information on Emma Sheridan Olney the daughter of Gen Philip Henry Sheridan and "Gma Betsy" aka Frances aka Sidnayoh ?. But I can not find anymore than what is listed in the book The Name Was Olney. And somewhere in our many moves with the military my book from Uncle Dan disappeared. So without help from my cousins Jai-Dee, "Medicine Valley" Dan Hoptowit and any others back home on the Yakama or Warm Springs reservations I will remain lost. And this is the only way I know to reach most of you. I am also begging for any information regarding the bloodlines of Jeannette Hallicola, but ESPECIALLY Agnes Hoptowit and Martha Goudy. Any copies of documentation will be GREATLY appreciated. Please write to itsolneyme@hotmail.com (the late Franklin Pierce Olney Jr.'s daughter) Paige

Olney/Candler child

Within the last two days, we have found out that my great-grandfather had a child that no one in the family knew existed. She was born as Adeline Candler. Her mother, Sarah, died in childbirth. My great-grandfather, Jim Candler, was living in Nemaha County Kansas, in 1870, and the child appeared on the census with her two year old brother, William. For whatever reason, Jim Candler left for Virgina, which was his birthplace, and left the baby with a childless couple, Solomon and Caroline Olney where she appeared on the census, again, in the household of the Olney's as 2 /12 month old "Adeline Candler." Whether she was left in their care or Jim came back for her, we don't know, but I believe he left her in their care. He later became a Judge in Oklahoma. I have found where Solomon died at 35 years old, but I can find no record of Caroline's maiden name. Solomon was from New York. Caroline may have returned to New York with the child and she may have remarried. I found an "Abby Candler" who was married in New York in the late 1800's. She would add a whole new branch to our Candler family tree if we can find her. Please, if anyone knows anything about this or Caroline's maiden name or her name if she remarried, please contact me. Anney (Candler) Moore

Family of Joseph Mary (Tanner) Olney

I am interested in hearing from any descendants of Joseph Olney and Mary Tanner. They were born in Virginia; resided in Yolabusha Co., Mississippi;
by 1849 somewhere in Texas; by 1870 in Burnet Co., Texas. Son John Tanner Olney, and daughters Manerva (Mrs. James Hill) and Ann (Mrs. A.C. Taylor)
remained, as far as I know, in Burnet County. Sons Joseph Graves Olney, Samuel Young Olney, George A. Olney, Daniel Paul Olney, William, Edward and
Oscar all moved west into Arizona and New Mexico. George lived in Safford and Tucson (died about 1912) and Joseph lived near Bowie, AZ (died 1884);
and Samuel lived in Lordsburg, NM. Lost track of the others. Any help on this family will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...Tom. skyla@sasquatch.com

I posted message #5 in error. The correct version goes as follows:
Maggie Olney wed Fred Hoffer, their children actually were Nathan CC, Raymond, Ernie, I think there were others, but don't know for sure. Possibly a sister, Edna, that died in 1918.

Raymond Hoffer wed Katherine Fries, their children are Gerald, Leroy, Eleanor, Jacqueline Hoffer. I posted otherwise on accident.

Mam' please forgive this message here to you, but I have no other way to tell you there is a major error on your Family Tree Homepage. On this you have my grandfather Franklin Pierce Olney married to Ruth Davenport as possibly being married to a Emma Sheridan Olney (illegitimate daughter of Gen.Philip Henry Sheridan and Frances aka Sidnayoh). That is very wrong. But there is another Franklin Pierce Olney that was married to Emma. This one is my g-g-grandfather. There are several Franklin Pierce Olneys' in the line.....one was my father, then my grandfather and then my g-g-grandfather.
I am sorry if this might have been considered rude in any way. Please email me at itsolneyme@hotmail.com

I have Captain Nathan Hale Olney Ehatinsh, they had five children in all, as being the parents of Charles Olney.
I also have Orville Olney Lillian Braden as the parents.
I believe that maybe there were two Charles, hence the CC in the name for carbon copy. Does anyone have any more information?
