In looking at Cornwall baptisms for John and Christian Orchard, there are "hits" both in Illogan Parish and in Tintagel Parish. The Tintagel ones seem to match the 1850 Honesdale PA census for John and Christian. I am now guessing there are two sets of "John and Christian". The Illogan couple had a James J. in 1827 and several more.

Could we discuss "off board" so we can sort it out. Then we can come back and share with the Board.

Bill - wfamolim@gmail.com

You may be right. Check out this book, which mentions a James Orchard in Pennsylvania:
The Cousin Jacks: the Cornish in America by Alfred Leslie Rowse.

You still need more information before you can jump the pond. Try to find wills which might mention siblings, or land records for the farm. Also a history of the area, which apparently includes Berlin and Honesdale PA
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/26968006/person/12216163014

I am an Orchard descendant and suspect they came from Cornwall because of ancestor's name Charles Wesley Orchard, born 1872 in Wayne County PA. Know Methodist movement strong in Cornwall in mid-late 1700s.

Charles Wesley Orchard's father was James J. (born bt 1825-28 in England; died 1897). James J. was married to Julia Warwick (1832-1916 in PA,USA)

Our Orchards were in PA and NY.

Haven't been able to make the leap back from USA to England. Any ideas how to proceed? Thanks

The North American ORCHARDS and the Australian ORCHARDS were seeded from many different sources.
I have been researching the southern Cornwall branches for some time now, and members of this family have turned up, in large numbers in North America and Australia that I know of. But they are just a small part of the ORCHARDS in both these areas.
With much help from other researchers we have estimated that the southern Cornwall ORCHARD family came from around Week St Mary (1440), but where before that ???.
Our combined research is on my web pages at
http://members.iinet.net.au/~kjstew/OrchORIG.htm
and the southern Cornwall families are expanded at
http://members.iinet.net.au/~kjstew/OrchINDEX.htm
For your information
Ken STEWART
I see that you are a dec. of Scadding. I am looking for info on the Kingman family
My 4th great grand mother was Ann Scadding who married a George Kingman circa 1835 in Chideock, Dorset. she was born in Symondsbury (I think) about 1812. George Kingman died about 1844 and Ann Scadding-Kingman married James Perrott in 1845
I was wondering if my Ann Scadding is related to your Scadding and if so do you have any bit of info on the Kingman.
I know George and Ann Kingman had kids, Sarah Ann 1836, Martha 1837, Susan 1840, and william 1842. I think but not sure that this William shows up in Newfoundland in 1866 married to a Charity Stone. It is the connection between George/Ann(Scadding)Kingman and William/Charity(Stone) Kingman that I need to make for my tree to be correct. Just a long shot but will try almost anything now. thank you

My John Orchard, b abt 1791 in England, married Mary Hambley in Lesnewth, Cornwall 1820. He appears to have had a son,James, from an earlier marriage. John and Mary lived in the Boscastle, Cornwall area from their marriage until about 1833, when he immigrated to New York. Mary and the children arrived there in 1840. They settled in Dutchess County, NY. Mary seems to have come from a long line of Hambleys in Cornwall. I do not know the parents or birth location of John. John and Mary were non-conformists. John was likely a tinsmith or blacksmith. If this seems like a connection, feel free to email me at tlokazaki@aol.com.

Re: Orchard DNA Project

The surname Orchard is as Anglo-Saxon a name as it is ever likely to be. It is most prevalent in the area that was the heartland of the Kingdom of Wessex. The written form varied depending on which ancient document that you refer to but orceard in the Old English tongue was almost certainly pronounced as we now pronounce Orchard. Ironically the OE name for an orchard was orceardleh, the leh element referring to a piece of ground or field, whereas orceard or ortgeard was the word for garden.
In middle English, that of Chaucer, it became associated specifically with a fruit garden. The OE word for gardener was orcerdweard.

The conjecture about the Clan Urquhart is silly on two levels. Firstly Urqhuart rightly does not have anything to do with the Highlands - it was a Norman-French family name introduced during the reign of King David, the son of King Malcolm and his Anglo-Saxon Queen, St Margaret. The clans were a characteristic of the Highlands.
Secondly, the name Orchard was apparently adopted by some Urqhuarts, presumably because it is more readily acceptable in the English language, but that is the reverse of imagining that the Orchard name derived from a Norman-French one.

In respect of your idea about distribution. The Isle of Wight certainly has a good number of Orchard's but they were not in any higher level of distribution than in the whole of the county of Hampshire (of which IoW was once a part). Hants and IoW together might claim the status of the 'county' with the most Orchard's, but then Gloucestershire with Bristol might be entitled to that crown. Hants and IoW was the first areas to be taken over and controlled by the Gewisse, that Anglo-Saxon Clan that came later to be the Royal House of Wessex; they landed in Southampton Water led by Cerdic and his immediate family. Cornwall, equally has always had a good number of Orchard's, especially around Launceston, but the concentration is not as great as in Hants or Gloucestershire.

Lastly; the name was for the most part a metonymic, or at least place related. The chances of large numbers of Orchard's being DNA related, except in deep mytochondrial terms, is very low. Probably every village had an orchard or two and the man who held it was probably called it. My own 3x great grandfather was, strangely, a gardener; his name was Orchard, but because of the Wiltshire accent it was usually pronounced Archard.

John Orchard
of the Wiltshire Orchards (where there are at least as great a concentration as in Cornwall!)

It would be invaluable if the Isle of Wight Orchards could be related to the Cornish Orchards, as they are the largest branches that I am aware of. I think it would also be valuable if the Orchard DNA Project can be related to the Urquhart surname. There has been conjecture over the years that all of these families originally broke off from the Urquhart Clan of Loch Ness.

-Justin Orchard of the Isle of Wight Orchard’s
www.orchardfamilyhistory.com
An Orchard surname DNA project has quite recently been created at Family Tree DNA. The public website for this project is located at worldfamilies.net.

The project is designed to assist participants who hope to confirm relationships of individuals or family lines, establish a country or area of origin and strengthen paper trail evidence. The Orchard surname is frequently seen in southwestern England. At times the spelling is Archard, and there are other variations. Researchers of Orchard and all spelling variations are invited to join the project.

Hi Danielle,

I'm working on the Healey branch of my family, who came from England and settled in the Bendigo region, with Golden Square in the mix. I don't have any of your family's names, but have a lot of 'gaps'. Maybe I can help in some way, as I live in the district near Castlemaine.

My Healeys:
William and Mary Jane (Clarke)who had 12 children, inlcuding my g-grandfather Henry who married Christina Mary (Bridget) Gray. They didn't stay around the Bendigo area, but other family members did.

There are 'Orchards' in the area, but whether they are your rellies or not I don't know.

Jen

Hi,
I have lots of Orchards in Victoria but mainly around Winchelsea and Geelong. They are the children of Thomas Orchard and Susannah Templar.
One child, John T. Orchard (b.circa 1835) married Sarah Jane Groves 1867 Vic. They had children from 1868 onwards in St Arnaud, Donald and Elmore. John was one of 15 children who all came to Australia. Nearly all of the others married and had children in Winchelsea and Geelong.
Let me know if you can see any link
Cheers
Andrea

Re: Alex and Mary Orchard from Spring Valley, MO

I too am pleased that someone else is working on the Orchards. I've only ever gotten 2 replys. The information online is so old, that I have a new account and have been unable to update what is there, but I will try. For now, I can tell you what I do know about Alex after he left Missouri.

Alex married Mary M. in Spring Valley, MO. (I think her name may have been Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary because on a later census, she was listed as "Maggie." When they married, Mary already had a young son named George Washington Brinkley (this is our line). Mary and Alex first show up together on the 1880 census on Spring Hill, MO when George was 12. She and George were born (according to the censuses) in Kentucky where the Orchards hailed from (I've always wondered if there was a previous connection.) I do wish we know what her maiden name or prior name was - it was a story the family would never tell. I've never been able to find a marriage record in Missouri for the two of them. Anyway, Alex took him on too. He must have been a good father to George because he named one of his own sons "Ralph Alex." Somewhere between 1880 & 1900 they all moved to Hunt County, TX where George farmed and Alex worked as a blacksmith.

Alex and Mary had four children, three daughters and a sons:
1. Jessie D. Orchard b: 31 Jul 1877 d: 16 Jan 1918 in Denton Texas of burns suffered after her clothing caught fire while boiling clothes for laundry. She was married to Charles "Coke" Fannin Barnett (a blacksmith) between 1906-07. They had two sons: Robert Earl, b: Dec 1917, Denton, TX - died after 1945 and Willie Coke b: 27 Oct 1914 in Hunt Co, TX and died 27 Oct 1914 in Hunt Co.
2. James Robert Orchard, born March 1878 in Hunt Co, TX. d: after 1930, probably in Texas. In 1930 he was listed as a carpenter. Married to Etta Baldwin 31 Jan 1900 in Hunt Co, TX. They had two children: Roy E. born 31 Dec 1900 in Greeneville, TX, d: 9 Nov 1957 in Odessa, TX. (Married to Laura Gene McAteer in 1922 and they had 6 children.). Second child was Edna D. born about 1913.
3. Susan Effie Ann Orchard was born Apr 1880 in Missouri and died 20 Jan 1915 in Hunt Co, TX. She married William Glenn Barnett (a blacksmith) on 12 Nov 1899 in Hunt Co, TX and they had 3 children.
4. Ellie Becky Orchard was born Nov. 1882 in Missouri and died 4 July 1935 in Hunt Co. She married Jasper Peyton Barnett (a farmer) on 07 Mar 1900 in Hunt Co, TX. They had 7 children. She died of what sounds like pneumonia.

Note the three sisters married three brothers. It was one of those family stories you don't pay alot of attention to, but is how I finally unraveled them, finding one husband then tracing back through his family to find the other two marriages. It is sad that none of the girls lived to old age.

And I too have found the confusion with the names. Alex did the same with his own children- James, after his brother, Jessie after his father, Susan Effie Ann, was James' wife. It is obvious he thought a great deal of his family.

Sadly, Alex took his own life on 26 Apr 1901 in Greeneville, TX. I found this online:
From the Hunt, Tx GenWeb Project
1901 Deaths from the "Commerce Journal", Greenville Herald
Excerpt:
Drank Wood Alcohol.
News was brought to the city from Neyland yesterday coming of the death of Mr. A. Orchard of that community. He had for some time past been very disconsolate and tired to drown his sorrows in drink. It seems that he had been in our city for several days but had returned home on Thursday.
Friday afternoon he went to a store at Neyland and made the remark that "he was mighty dry" and asked for some stimulant. He was told they had nothing but wood alcohol. He walked back and took one spoonful, diluted, then followed it up with several other doses, with the usual result. It is said that there had been some family troubles but no investigation or inquest of the body held by the authorities. Doubtless this drink was taken with suicidal intent, the deceased not being in his right mind at the time.

Earlier, another researcher had sent me this about his brother, Sen. James Orchard in relation to Alex' death:
DEATH: The Current Wave (Eminence, Shannon County, Mo.)
May 2, 1901

Sudden Death..
Senator Orchard goes to attend the funeral of a brother in Texas.
In response to a telegram recieved late Friday afternoonn, announcing the death of his brother, Alex Orchard, in Texas, Senator James Orchard left on the fast train at 1 o'clock this morning for Greenville, Tex. He will arrive there about 6 o'clock this evening, in time for the funeral, which will probably take place Sunday.
The news of his brother's death was a shock to Senator Orchard and family. He died suddenly, but no particulars have been recieved.
Alex Orchard is a younger brother of Senator Orchard and was 47 years old. He formerly lived in Shannon County, this state; had served as Assessor of the county, and was well known in this part of the state. He moved to Texas some years ago and was engaged in farming. He recently moved from Campbell, Tex., to near Greenville, where he died. He leaves a wife and five children, all of whom but one are married. Senator Orchard had not seen his brother for some fifteen years, and has a long, sad journey to the stricken home. He will remain for several days with the bereaved family.

Since the dates were the same, it confirmed the A. Orchard was our Alex Orchard. The suicide was another one of those family sstories that no one ever talked about.

The following is Mary M. (Brinkley) Orchard's obituary, which confirms some of the information:
From OKCHOCTA - Choctaw County Oklahoma Genealogy (found 11/2/07):
MARY M. ORCHARD
Mother of G.W. Brinkley Dies
The Boswell News – December 15, 1932
Transcribed by Ron Henson for OKCHOCTA:
Mrs. M.M. Orchard, mother of Mr. G.W. Brinkley, died rather suddenly Tuesday night at 9 o’clock and the body was carried to Campbell, Texas, Wednesday for burial Thursday. A more extensive write-up will appear in next week’s News.

Mrs. Orchard Buried Last Week
The Boswell News - December 15, 1932
Transcribed by Ron Henson for OKCHOCTA
Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Brinkley and family returned last week from Commerce, Texas, where they attended the funeral of Mrs. Mary Orchard, Mr. Brinkley’s mother.
Mrs. Mary Orchard died Dec. 6, in the home of her son, G.W. Brinkley, here of heart failure. Mrs. Orchard was born in Kentucky March 11, 1847.
Mrs. Orchard’s funeral was held in Commerce, Dec. 8, conducted by the Rev. W.M. Rogers and interment made in the cemetery there. Pall bearers were, C.E. Brinkley, R.A. Brinkley, Evert Barrett, Fred Barrett, R.E. Barrett and C.F. Barrett.
Mrs. Orchard was a member of the Eastern Star and for 40 years a member of the Methodist church.
Mrs. Orchard is survived by three children, G.W. Brinkley, Boswell; J.R. Orchard, Abeline, Tex.; and Mrs. J.R. Barrett, of Commerce, Texas.
*    *    *    *
(The name really was Barnett - the newspaper or the transcriptionist got it wrong in the article.)

C.E. and R.A. Brinkley were her grandsons by George. R.E. was Jessie's son. Everit and Fred were Ellie's sons and C.F. was Jessie's husband.

I hope this helps and if you find any further information I would love to know, particularly marriage information for Alex and Mary.

Re: Alexander Orchard - KY - b.c. 1769

A certain James Orchard was living in Bedford Co, VA as early as 1757 where he shows up on land records with his wife Eleanor. He was also a constable for that county according to the court records. He is listed in the muster rolls for the militia of Bedford Co in 1758. By 1775 he is listed as a Captain in Dunsmore's war with a certain John Orchard under his command. NO paper proof but this is most likely his son, the one who moves to KY with brother William. In the land records this James receives land in 1785 (Revolutionary War land grant) in Lincoln Co, VA which become Madison Co, KY. That is where his trail ends. By the earliest tax rolls in that county, it only lists John and William. William maintains his connections with Bedford Co, VA as shown in a particular court record. He also has land given to him in NC which he wishes to sell and gives one Henry Jeter of Bedford Co, VA power of attorney to sell the land. This William Orchard marries Elizabeth Crooke and they move to Hart Co, KY as shown by the 1820 census. They have three sons and one daughter. William dies in Hart Co and his son James marries Elizabeth Dawson of Hart Co. After William dies, the family moves to MO and settle in Dent and Shannon Co's. "Betsy" Crooke dies and is buried in Dent Co, MO. I am not sure where Alexander falls into the lineup in KY but it has been assumed that he is the brother of John and William, which would make his father most likely this one James Orchard from Scotland. The trail ends there.....

I hope that gives some insight to the timeline and family history.

Stacey

I am happy to see this line of Orchards being researched. I was aware that Alex had moved to TX and saw him and his family on census rolls but had not had time to research him. I come from another line. Alex's father was Jesse Orchard, brother to my ancestor William Orchard. Alex was no doubt named for his uncle, who was named for his uncle...lol. There were four brothers in Jesse's line (William, Jesse, Jeremiah and Alexander). They were sons of one James Orchard who came to MO from TX with his brothers John and Alexander. James and John were sons of William Orchard and Elizabeth Crooke. William had two known brothers (John and Alexander). These boys were sons of one James Orchard who says he was "imported from Scotland" in 1745 and Eleanor (maiden name unknown). That is where the trail stops. As you can see, James, John, William and Alexander are all common names in this family. If at any time you run across and Alexander Orchard, more than likely he belongs to our family. Can you update your findings so that I don't duplicate your information when I am researching? Thanks!

Stacey

Mary Hambley Orchard (b. abt. 1801, Eng) arrived NY May 1840 aboard the ship, Philadelphia, along with children Anne Marie, Samuel, Francis and Mary. Also with her was James Orchard (b. abt. 1815 Eng) but it is unclear if this was her son. Point of departure was London. Mary joined husband John Orchard (b. abt. 1791 Eng) and the family settled in Poughkeepsie, as per 1840 census. It remains unclear as to where/when John and Mary were married. I do not know when John came to NY or whether he came through NY, Virginia, Canada or elsewhere. Family lore tells of some affiliation with Scotland but I haven't been able to prove this. Daughters Jane and Catherine were born in NY. John and Mary are buried in New Hamburgh.

Re: Orchard Branches of North America

I appreciate all of the information that everyone has shared. I can shed more light on the diffusion of the Isle of Wight Orchards. Their story begins in the 1750’s in western IoW when William Orchard was born. Their family lived in IoW until, four generations later, in 1852, when William III settled in Toronto area (Bowmanville, Ontario) and married a woman from Cornwall, Emma Coleman. Their family grew a cluster of Orchards in the Toronto area. Later generations grew large clusters of Orchards in Washington, Michigan, and North Dakota. From those large clusters, smaller clusters have settled in Minnesota, Oregon, and California. This diffusion is by no means complete, the further diffusion of the large Michigan cluster is not yet known.

I wonder if there is a link out there somewhere that links the Cornwall Orchards to the IoW Orchards. My grandmother always had a hunch that there was a relation too. I have a contact that has IoW Orchard contacts and I will have to ask if there is any connection known by them.

I also wonder which branch contributed to the Orchards in Australia. That may have been the IoW Orchards, since the IoW was a resupply stop for the prison ships on their way to Australia.

Does anyone know about any connection between the Urquharts of Cromarty, Scotland and any of the Orchard branches? It is possible that the Orchards, or at least some of the Orchards, are a breakaway from that Scottish clan.
Hi Justin
I am a member of the Orchard family who came from Stirling, Scotland to South Australia in 1852. I am a direct descendant of William Orchard (abt 1812-1881) and Catherine Robertson (abt 1831-?). William was born in Leicester, England and Catherine in Stirling, Scotland. Catherine's father is identified as Bengemen on their marriage record of 1848 (in Stirling). My paternal Grandad also spoke of a link between the names Urquhart and Orchard. He had been told that some of the Urquharts changed their name to Orchard when they emigrated to make it easier to say and spell. I haven't been able to verify any of this and sadly, Grandad passed away when I was just 4yrs old. I welcome any info you may come across in your search. Meanwhile, I suggest you look up www.houseofnames.com as they have a reference to the Orchard/Urquhart question
Regards and keep in touch
Tanya

Janice,
I'm intrigued about Mary Beedham that married Joseph Orchard. My family of Beedhams [lots of variants in teh spelling ]came from County Down Ireland, they moved to Durham in 1844/5. We know there is a link to Ballynahinch but keep coming up against brick walls. Do you know any more about Mary Beedham?

Here are my notes on Joseph Orchard. I know his parents and all of his descendants.

- he enlisted in the British army at the age of 19
- a soldier (stationed #746) with the 68th Regiment (The Durhams) who "served under Wellington in Spain", then he was stationed in Ireland (where he married Mary Beedham)
- then later in [North] America 1818-29 ending on October 24, 1829, He received his honourable discharge in 1831 (he also served a short stint in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada)
- he retired in 1831 with a grant of land (south half of lot 14 Con.11 Innisfil) - he moved to Innisfil (a few miles south of Barrie, Ontario, Canada) and sent for his family of five in 1833 (they had stayed in Toronto)
- in later years, they lived on a 14 acre lot near Craigvale
- he died of a broken neck as the result of a fall while fighting a fire in the roof of his home

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Justin - I'm aware of 2 Orchard branches:
1. Cornwall, which settled up into Devon and north through Bristol and can be traced as far as Wotton under Edge. They have some involvement with shipping in Bristol, and may have emigrated from that port.
2. The Gloucestershire group, which seems to have come from Berkshire through Wiltshire (see Bill Archard's reply). The name in Gloucester became Orchard (pronounced Archard in Glos. dialect). They settled as far north as North Nibley, but seemed to be entirely separate (per land, intermarriage, religion, and civil records) from group 1.
I have seen occasional references to an IOW group, but only later dates (prob. 1750 on) Do you think they might be part of the Cornwall family (think seafaring)? And of course the name could arise in distinct groups who happen to live near a group of fruit trees!
Good luck with your migration routes project.

Margaret Melaney
researching Orchard/Archard of the Severn Vale

I'm gathering information to make a model of the Orchard family migration to North America. I intend to show the paths of the diffusion of the Orchards.

How many different branches are out there? I am aware of two main branches: the Isle of Wight Orchards and the Cornwall Orchards. Does anyone have information about other main branches?

I have heard about Orchards taking two paths thus far: Ontario, Canada, and Virgina. Does anyone have more information that I can use?
