Sorry for the delay in responding. I am working hard to tidy up some easy documentation on my file before posting again and then moving back into more research. In the new file, should be posted very soon, you'll be able to see more of what I got and some compelling information about the Russia connection. I've also recently found some other information on that front, though circumstantial also, that I need to do more research on so it wont be mentioned in the next update. Thanks for your help on this. I'm certain working together we can all get a great family history out of this. Linda

Re: Joseph Oren Family Tree

Since I first posted, I have learned a lot about the Orens. But mostly what I know is that no one knows for sure who the first Oren was to America, or exactly where he came from.

My thoughts on the theory that Orenburg, Russia, is the root location: I found a site online that lists scores and scores of place names that use "Oren", some in Scandinavian countries, some Slavic, some French. There's the first proof that one can't assume that the city name alone confirms the Oren family stemming from Orenburg. Actually, I found strong evidence that the city's name isn't connected to an Oren surname. The city name comes from the river "Or," according to Wikipedia's page on Orenburg: "The Russian Empire began plans for the expansion into Asia by construction of an eastern frontier fortress town in the southern Ural region to be named Orenburg in 1734. The colonists originally founded a settlement in 1735 at the confluence of the Ural River with the Or River. The town's name meant "fortress near the Or," as Burg is German for fortress."

So to me the origin of the American Orens is all still a mystery. Do you have any clues?

My lineage is the Pennsylvania Orens. I know for sure about my great-grandfather, Jesse Patton Oren, a Civil War vet, silver prospector out West after the war, and then a businessman in New Cumberland, Pa. I can also trace back to a Joseph Orin/Oren, born in 1730 in York County, Pa. !!!!Note that 1730 predates the founding of Orenburg, Russia. so there's another piece of evidence that Orenburg, Russia, has noting to do with my American Orens.
Thought?

My mother was an Oren, and I'm solid to Jesse Patton Oren B. 1839. Trying to see if John Oren b. 1792 was Jesse Patton's father -- and was John Oren b. 1792 married to Elizabeth or Lydia? I see both wives in trees on this site.

Thanks!

Andrew Jackson Daugherty & Mary Oren

Hi,
My name is Irene Daugherty Rude. I am the great, great granddaughter of Andrew Jackson Daugherty & Mary Oren. I have records that indicate Mary Ann "Drew"Oren was born in March 28, 1835 and died in April 26, 1909 or 1910 in Rochester, IN Fulton County. A past review of the Daugherty geneology indicate that Mary Ann Oren was born in PA and lived in OH. However, the difference between your family tree lies with the her father's name. A Mr. William Dubois was retained by Dr. Bowen a distant cousin of mine to research the geneology of the Daugherty's. His research and an article found in Ohio indicates that Mary Jane's father was Elihu Oren born in Greene County, TN March 3, 1809. In the fall of 1810, his father John Oren moved his family from TN to Clinton County Ohio. On August 1, 1830 he married Jane Newcomb. They had 5 childre; Charles, Elizabeth, Jesse, Mary Jane and Asenath Clarissa who died in 1862. The census from Fulton Cty. IN does show that Mary Oren was born in PA. I feel sure we are cousins, but wanted to confirm with you some of the information I've been provided. You may already know that our great grandfather and grandmother are buried in Starke County, IN in the North Bend, IN cemetary. I've been there a number of times with my parents Jay Andrew Daugherty & Beulah as a child and an adult. I look forward to hearing from you as I am not sure the info I have is correct and cannot complete my family tree for the Oren side of the family.

Thank you.

Re: Joseph Oren Family Tree

Hi there John,

The originator of the Oren's to America comes from an old family bible not in my possession. My original information came from a study put together by Ira Oren. I have taken it much more beyond that. Joseph is the originator but no one I know has proof of his origination. I am determined to find where where he originated from before America as well but so far an still hunting. I have a copy of an article from the Pennsylvania Gazette asking for his return to his master. He was a bond servant or convict that came to America at 16 in 1746 but unfortunately that is all I have right now. The next record of him is his marriage to Abigail December 11, 1754 in Wilmington Delaware. As you no doubt know, the story passed down through the generations is that three brothers came to America, yet for some reason the ancestry immigration record based on the previously mentioned article states he was the primary immigrant at 16. My records show he and Abigail had three sons, which is corroborated by a 1790 census. I'm wondering if the three brothers are actually the sons of Joseph.

I also have a lot of information on the wives, particularly the Kirk's, Frazier's, Atkinson's, and White's. And some information on different direct lines than my own. I would like this genealogy to be as complete as possible as there are so many Oren's looking for the information, so I would love to collaborate with you however we can. Where are you located geographically? I am in Colorado. Perhaps we can devise an approach to divide and conquer different aspects of the genealogy.

I am a granddaughter of Jesse Myron Oren, son of Ira Oren, son of Absalom Oren, son of Joseph Oren, son of John Oren and Ruth Frazier, son of Joseph Oren and Abigail Kirk.

You can reach me directly at strmfam@mesanetworks.net.

Thanks for your query,

Sincerely,
Linda Strum

If you have information that Joseph was the first immigrant, I am most interested. I have been trying to find the first Oren immigrant and his origin without success.

I have my Oren tree back to Oren (Christened 1730, Newcastle, DE), John (b. 1765), James (b. 1797), John Atkinson (b. 1817), Alfred (b.1845), John Atkison (b. 1877), etc. I have significant amount of information on this line and would be happy to share. A small book has been written on this line which I could provide.

I also have much more information on the ancestry of the wives of the above Oren’s, if this would be of help.
I have lots of Oren Genealogy information dating from the first Oren to America in 1730 or so. The line I have starts with Jesse Oren and Abigail Kirk. Their first son, John Sr. was born 6/10/1765 in York Co., PA. The genealogy goes on from there. It was compiled by my great uncles from family bibles and other relatives. While I have a tremendous amount of information I am still trying to find where Jesse Oren came from, which was also where my great uncles had trouble. I am hopeful however that the mystery will be solved soon.
I am in the process of developing a family tree scrapbook for all lines within this family and would be happy to help you with any questions you might have.
Hi, I’m currently in the process of putting together a book on my family and am interested in any information anyone can provide on the children/grandchildren of Meander Oren and Melvia Doughman Oren. I have the names of all 11 of their children, and information on their ancestors, what I’m missing and hoping some folks can provide are their descendents names. Would love to include all of their grandchildren and such, and would be willing to share my book when I print it (hopefully around 1/1/07) I’m going to be distributing the book to the Warren & Clinton County Genealogy Societies and Libraries.
In addition, any one with information on the Oren’s from New Castle DE, Pennsylvania, Greene County TN, or Southwestern Ohio can submit their info to be included, I have a very comprehensive genealogy but am missing a lot of people born after about 1875.
Please email me at StephSH@yahoo.com if you have any information.
Thanks
Steph
WOW, this is so exciting, I just started my family tree and most of my info came from my grandma, Anna Armstrong Oren, wife of George Oren, son of Mevia and Meander Harrison Oren. Since there is so much interest, I am going to post what I have. If anyone has info on a branch that I dont, please share! I know several Orens married several Armstrongs, so this may help in a couple directions :)
William Doughman m Mary "Etta" Doughman abt 1885,
children: Lizzie DOB 7/1885,Bertina(?) DOB 8/1887,
Edna 9/1891,Melvie 10/1892, Robie 6/1896, and Chester 8/1899. This info is on the 1900 census.
Meander Harrison Oren married Melvia (Melvie) abt 1911?
children : Florence DOB May 12, 1912, Inez DOB October 10, 1914, Virgil DOB April 25, 1916, George William DOB December 10, 1917, Orland DOB February 25, 1920, Mary DOB May 20, 1922, Herbert Clifford (Chick) DOB July 14, 1924, Etta DOB March 23, 1926, Viola DOB September 29, 1927, Melvia DOB March 12, 1930, kathryn DOB January 09, 1932. George Oren married Anna Armstrong on 3/7/42, they are both still living, their children are Joy Oren Jones, and Nancy Oren Sherwood, their grandchildren are Gordon Smith, Stephanie Smith Helwig, and Jeffrey Allen Smith.
Great Grandchildren are Cassie Helwig, Jason Helwig and Georgianna Smith (Gordon)
I have more info on the Armstrong side, and also more on the Orens, such as spouses names, children, ect, as this is getting pretty lengthy, I will either post more next weekend or email you more. Again, please share what you have. I have been told that both lines can be traced to the Revolution. Does anyonehave it back that far??
Thanks
Steph
My name is John Oren and I suspect we are related. My ancestry goes back through Ohio and Pennsylvania to John Oren, Sr. born in York County Pennsylvania on 10 Jun 1765 and his father, Joseph Oren or Jesse Oren (origin unknown). I suspect your ancestry also includes John Oren, Sr.

John Oren, Arlington, Texas

I have many Oren ancestors who lived in Clinton County Ohio. My Great-Great-Great Great Grandfather, John Oren, Sr. moved to Clinton County in 1810 with his wife, Ruth Frazier and eleven children, from Greene County, Tennessee. Five generations later, my Grandfather, John Adkinson Oren moved from Clinton County, Ohio to Oklahoma in 1902. To the best of my knowledge, all the Orens in Clinton County were decendants of John Oren,Sr. John Oren, Sr. was born in 1765 in York County, Pennsylvania. He married Ruth Frazier there and moved to Greene County, Tennessee some years later in 1793. He moved to Ohio because of the slavery issue. Ruth Frazier died in 1811 by falling into a fire and John Oren Sr. married Lydia Ladd. Four children were bonn to the second marriage. In all John Oren, Sr. had 16 children and 105 grandchildren. Ten of his grandchildren say civil war action and three lost their lives.

I have record of many of the decendants of John Oren, Sr. in Clinton County, but none named Roland Oren (b. 1852). My great Grandfather, Alfred Oren (b. 1845) was near the same age as Roland, so I believe he was either a cousin of Alfred Oren (his father could either be Joseph Oren, Elijah Oren or William Oren - Alfred's uncles and sons of James Oren) or a distant cousin of Alfred Oren (his grandfather would then be either an earlier Joseph Oren, Elihu Oren, John N. Oren, Alexander Oren, Jesse B. Oren, Jacob Oren, Ephrain Oren, or David Oren - all children of John Oren, Sr.)

Thats all I have -- Good luck

John Oren

Jane,
I just recently found I had a great great grandmother, Margaret Oren. Born June 20, 1839 and died April 19, 1923. She married John Lewis Wright. Could she possibly be related to your line. The Wright family is mostly from Cumberland County, Pa. for many , many generations. I would appreciate any info. Thank you. You may email me at sadahar67@aol.com
