Hi. I'm not a "paying member" of ancestry.com so I do not have access to your email info. Please email me: flisky@hotmail.com and let's talk.

I think it's interesting that the date we "connected" happened to be Millie's birthday. Must mean something. Looking forward to hearing from you.

My grandmother was Clara Orenstein from Stefaresti Romania.

She married Morris Senderowitz, also from Stefaresti and they settled in Toronto Canada. They had five Senderowitz children who all lived in toronto into their 90's. There is still one living Senderowitz - Rose Senderowitz Wolfe. The Senderowitz family was very active in the Jewish community here and in Israel.

The Senderowitz family were bakers in Romania and Morris Senderowitz had opened up his own bakery in Toronto. His brother Max, also a baker settled in New York and had a huge family

Clara Ornstein Senderowitz died in 1958.

Clara had one bother Norman Ornstein and he had three children here in Toronto- Jennie, Harry and Clara Ornstein. Norman's wife was Sophia Schwartz and she died along with baby Jennie in 1907 in a house fire in Toronto.Sophia's brother Samuel Schwartz raised the two remaining Ornstein children in Toronto. Clara took the Schwartz name but Harry remained an Ornstein.
Harry later moved to Detroit. He might have changed his name to Ormsby.Harry married a women namedJay and they had a very successful toy company in Detroit. I am still trying to track Harry down as I have very little information about him.

Norman stayed in Toronto after the fire and remarried and had three addtional girls. I don't know the second wife's name. Noman died in Toronto.

The Senderowitz family from Romania were bakers and opened their own bakery in Toronto.

Clara Orenstein's parents never made it over. I have no information on any of the Ornsteins from Romania. Clara had other brothers and sisters but I have not found them yet. They might have settle in Israel.

Hope this helps

Missling Link...Max / Mordechai Ornstein...grandson of Mordechai Zeev Ornstein?

am searching for a missing link. My great-grandfather was Max (Mordechai) Ornstein. He came to Plymouth, England at the turn of the 20th Century ot late 19th Century. Around the time of WW1 he changed the family name to Austin, a more Englsih, less foreign/German sounding name. The 1911 census of the UK says he was born in "Garilse". However there is no such place, as far as I have unvcovered. It is not a mispelling of UK town Carlise either. I beleive the census scribe wrote down a misheard pronounciation of Galatia or Galacia. This would be the district of Austria, now Ukraine.

I have done some googling for his name and came across two other Mordechai Ornstein's. including a Morcdecai. These are connected to the Rabbi Naftali Hersh and Kristianpoller/ Krystynopoler family tree's. I am trying to either prove or disprove a link to the Ornstein Rabbinical family which are connected to these lines. The most likely connections are two of the three sons of the husband of Lena Meizes, Rabbi Mordecai Zeev Ornstein, who died 28th October 1837. His three sons were Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Ornstein, who died on 21st March 1888 in Lvov now Lemburg, Ukraine, then Austria, Yerachmiel/ Rachmiel Ornstein and Yofef Hertz Ornstein. I know to eliminate the line of Zvi Hirsch, because he had only daughters, Channa and Jule/Chulie, marrying into the Braude/Broide and Landau/Landow/Landy etc families, respectively.

I know more about my Great Grandfather Max/Mordechai's line of descent, so I am not too stuck on that. Can you help?

Summary:
- Is Max Austin aka Max/Mordechai Ornstein, who was born in 1869 and died 1914, in Epsom, Surreym, UK, the grandson of Rabbi Mordechai Zeev Ornstein?
- Was his father either Yerachmiel/Rachmiel Ornstein or Yosef Hertz Ornstein or neither?
- Is there a town called Garilse in White Russia/Austria or is this a misplelling/mishearing of Galacia/Galatia?

please get in touch if you can help me or if I can help you.

Thank you

Benjamin Dunn

contact benjamin.dunn@gmail.com

We have the descendancy of two of their kids- Velvil (volf) and Shleema. As far as I know there were no Abraham nor Jakob. Sorry.
Good luck with your search.
Guy

My great-great-great grandfather's name was Abraham Ornstein, his son was Jacob Ornstein and his daughter was Freida Ornstein who married Charles Surkes who then had my grandmother. Jacob immigrated to Canada (possibly via the US) and was born in 1872. Unfortunately those members of the family who would have any additional info regarding cities of origin have long since passed away. I do know that Freida (Fanny) born approx. 1895 was actively involved in the Bukovina displaced persons charity in the post WWII years in Montreal indicating that they might have been from that part of Romania.

My father, Leibisch ELLENBERG was born in Ternopol, Poland in 1921. He immigrated to the U.S. (New York) in 1939, at the age of 17. It is believed that his parents, Abraham and Sara ELLENBERG (nee Sara WALLACH) were murdered in the Shoah, along with my father's sister Bashia (born 1924). My father's brother, Oscar ELLENBERG (born 1919) was drafted into the Russian army, and it is not known whether or not he survived the war. In 1921, my father's two Uncles, Mates and Abraham WALLACH immigrated to New York, along with their sister Feige WALLACH and their mother, Shewa WALLACH.
