Alexander Orton's converson to the LDS church.

I was wondering if anyone had any journals or histories of Alexander concerning his conversion to the LDS church. How is it he ended up in Parowan, Utah? I found a reference to his release from the Penitentiary on charges related to polygamy, but does anyone know how long he remained in prison?

Mary Elizabeth Orton died on July 20 1914 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Northumberland England and she was buried in the Elwicks cemetery. John Orton wrote a letter to my grandfather George Orton telling him about the burial services. John Orton had at least three siblings Ann Orton B-1850, George b-1853 and Thomas b-1854 and possibly another sister Matilda Eleanor Orton b-1952. Known children of John and Mary E.

Amos Orton lived in Burton, Cattarugus County, New York with his brother David Orton. He was a neighbor of my ancestor Andrew Lee Allen on Five Mile Creek. They joined the Mormon Church about 1833 and all of them including their brother Roger Orton moved to Kirtland Ohio. After the bank failure in 1837 Amos left the church and eventually found his way to Ortonville. Andrew Lee Allen was baptized September 3, 1833. I am wondering if anyone has the original baptism dates of the Orton brothers?

I don't know if this information will be helpful or not, but I thought I'd pass it along, just in case. I come from a clan of Orton's in Erie County, Pennsylvania. I have a copy of a hand-written piece of paper from a relative (who seemed ancient to me when she passed years ago) that lists John Orton (bap 1648, d 1695, m 1686 or 87) and his wife Anna Orvis (b 1655, d 1694). Her name is quite clearly written as Orvis, not Orris.

John's father was Thomas Orton (1613-1688), and his son was one of the Samuels (b 11.11.1694, d 3.28.1723)

They include my grandpa Joseph Thomas Orton, his wife Lily Jean Orton, two sons (Teddy Lee and Jerry), papaw's brother Toby Orton, and maybe a couple of others. My ggrandparents were Joseph Munsey Orton and Rebecca Potter, whom I didn't know. Anyway the rest of the family lives in Carter County, Tn. Some of them, namely my Mom, would have more info on the family than I do. I know my mom mentioned a Lula Orton. I can put you in touch if you want.
My mother told me that Elijah Orton gave money to Cecil and Amplias Orton to move to Bisbee, AZ. I understand that one was a sheriff in AZ. In 1970 I met someone along with my mother who worked in the mine at Bisbee who was an Orton, don't remember his name. Just looking for a connection as to who their parents might be.

Jerry

I don't know the name Josias Orton, but am 10th generation of Thomas 1613. In Ed Orton's book of 1896, he mentions that the branch of family tree that I'm on came from 3 Samuels which is mistaken on his part as it's Thomas, John, Capt. Sam, Hezekiah, Sedgwick, Edmund, etc. So there are many, many mistakes in the research world!

Dear Rod Lewis. I am also searching for information on JOB Orton, born ca 1824 (in the U.S or Ontario). Could you please tell me about your information that Job's mother's name was Lydia? Is this from a Bible record, or family information?
There was a Zenus Orton, born 1777 in Litchfield, Conn. who removed to Ontario ca 1790's supposedly, who had a wife named Lydia Barden/Bardon (1789-1856)
Thanks, Olivia Patch. A whole group of ashby-Weir-Orton-Girod-Tomlinson-Ikler all inter related by marriage all moved early 1900's from Hopkins County Ky to Bisbee Arizona. most worked in the mines but several were farmers and ranchers. I have not figured out how they all were related to each other. Cousins and in Laws and brothers and sisters.

Josias or Thomas

Hello,
I am starting research on the name of Orton. I think I have ties back to Thomas Orton of Windsor CT. While reading “An Account of the Descendants of Thomas Orton of Windsor, Connecticut, 1641 By Edward Orton 1896” I found some things that were different then the Town Records of CT.

Records of Windsor. Ct.
Josias Orton, m Margaret Pratt, June 1641 ; chil., . John b. 17 Feb.1647; Mary, b. 16 May 1650; Sara b. 22 Aug 1652; Elizabeth, b. 1 Oct. , 1654.

From Edward Orton’s book.
One record makes 1636 the date of settlement there, but the church records of the town show that he was married there(Thomas Orton) June 16, 1641, to Margaret Pratt. Names of his children are given below John, 1648, Mary, 1650, Sarah, 1652, Hannah, 1656.

Records of Farmimgton in CT.
Thomas Orten and his wife, were joined to the Church, Dec. 22, 1656.
Hannah Orten, daughter of Thomas Orten, was presented and baptized, December 29, 1656.
The rest of his children, John Orten, Mary Orten, Sarah Orten and Elizabeth Orten, being uinder 13 years when their father joined, ent’red also with him.

Church Records of Farmington Conn.
Samuel Orton, son of John Orton and Anna Orvis, daughter of Samuel Orvis, baptized Novemeber 11, 1694.

From Edward Orton’s book
Somewhere in the years 1686-87, he(John Orton of Farmington) married a second wife, whose name is given to us as Anna or Hannah, daughter of Samuel Orris. But inasmuch as the name Orris does not occur in the Farmington records, while another name that could very easily be confounded with it (viz., Orvis) was common there, I venture to suggest a correction. I think John Orton married Hannah, daughter of George, Orvis, for his second wife.

Thomas Orton seems to be right with children because I have found in the Vital records births with his name listed as father. But where did Josias come from? A mistake in the entry?

John of Farmington's second wife must have been Anna Orvis daughter of Samuel Orvis and not Hannah Orvis daughter of of a George Orvis.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can set the record straight for me.

Micki Beston
