UK Search results for Osgathorpe, et al

One of my cousins has access to a UK database and did a search for me today for Richard O. Her first reply to me was this:

I did some checking in the databases available on Find My Past and, while I didn't find Richard, I found there were a few Osgathorps (and/or variations) in London in the 1700's and one as early as 1632. There were quite a few in Notinghamshire & Yorkshire, and a few in Gloucestershire & London.

Found a marriage for Richard O. to Elizabeth Halforth in 1719 in Yorkshire (Boyd's mg index)

Checked Boyds inhabitants of London & family units 1200-1946 and found one entry for a female in 1632.

No results in:

Apprentices of Great Britain

Parish baptisms 1538-2005

British armed forces 1761-2005

In Parish marriages 1538-2005:

Elizabeth O. m. Thomas Green 1724 St Margaret, Westminster, London

Anne O. m. Sam Evans 1771              "                       "

In Probate & Wills to 1858: reference to Anne Osgathorpe Evans who inherited some money.

Civil registrations didn't start until 1837 so those are no help nor are the emigration/departure records. As Richard was kidnapped and transported there may be some shipping/cargo records but I'm not sure where. At least I know they're not on Find My Past.

Wish I could have found something solid but at least we know now what areas they were concentrated in. Of course, Richard could have been from Yorkshire or Nottingham or ??? and been kidnapped and shipped out from London as opposed to have been from London.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a second email later she said:
Did find this:
Parish Records Collection 1538-2005baptism
Day: 10
Month: Jul
Year: 1726
Forenames: Richard
Surname: OSGATHORP
Fathers Forenames: Richard
Occupation:
Mothers Forenames:
Abode: Monkhill
Place: Pontefract
Description: St Giles
County: Yorkshire W. Riding
Country: England
Checked: N
Notes: Hatmaker
Record source: Pontefract District Baptisms
Data provider: Pontefract & District Family History Society
****None of this is any "proof" of anything, but it does give a basis on what has been looked for or retrieved. And, gives a direction in which to look perhaps.
Is it correct that there is about an 8 year gap between Tilman Jasper and Harriet?  If so, there could easily be a female child that wasn't recorded on the census records before she was married.
Mary Osgathorpe
I've come across some interesting info. and hoping someone could shed some light.  I've don't have my ancestry.com subscription right now so I can't do any census checking.  There is a book called Franklin County, IL published by Turner Publishing Co. (ISBN: 1-56311-317-1) that has an entry about the descendents of Elizabeth Mary Osgathorpe, who was born in Jackson Co., TN.  From the names of her descendents is seems as if she belongs to the John A. Osgatharp and Susannah Carlisle family.  Here is the info.:
William Campbell Price m. Elizabeth Mary Osgathorpe (it gives a birth year of 1822, but I am unsure if it refers to Wm or Eliz.) had 5 sons born in Jackson Co, TN
-Liberty Green b. 1845 m. Mary Parks Tucker, Emma Bayless
-Harrison Patterson b. 1847 m. Nancy Tooney
-John Osgathorpe b. 6/11/1850 m. Sarah Louis Webb on 10/19/1882 in Franklin Co, IL
-Addison Pillow b. 1852 m. Clara Matilda Eaton
-Samuel b. 1857 m. Anna Mueller Rosback
It also states that William and Elizabeth Mary Price left Jackson Co. at the start of the civil war b/c they were union sympathizers.  Liberty Green joined the Union Army.
Anyone know of this family or Elizabeth Mary?  My father has talked before about a Mary Osgathorpe/Osgatharp being a child of John A. and Susannah Carlisle, but just couldn't remember anything except a name (and wasn't entirely certain John and Susannah were the parents).
Oh, almost forgot, there is a photo of the family in the book, but I couldn't view it online as it was copywrite protected.  I'm going to do some library searching to see if I can find it.
TIA,
Linda
I have several old photos of the Osgatharp family & Benton Head family. I am looking for old family photos or records of birth, death, cemetery headstones. In 1996 I went to the McGlasson cemetery in Brimestone Clay Co. where some of the Osgatharps / Heads are buried. If anyone out there is willing to share information. Looking forward to hearing from all of you researchers.
Sheila Morring
Mesquite TX
Jane Osgatharp b. abt 1799 in NC
Sorry for my numberous postings.  I've just been able to hit the census records hard this week.  I found a Jane Osgatharp born about 1799 in NC on the 1850 Census for Jackson Co. TN.  Does anyone know anything about her?  Could she be a daughter to Richard Osgatharp?  She is also on the 1830 and 1840 Census.  These records give very little information.  On the 1830 her name is listed as Ogelthorp, but I think it's just an incorrect original.  In 1830 she is living right next to John Ogelthorp (I believe it is John Osgatharp son of Richard).  They are not living next to each other in the 1840 census.  John is living relatively near some Carlisle's.  Just curious if anyone else has any information on her.  Sorry I didn't have the 1840 for Jane downloaded.
Thanks,
Linda
I put too many pl's in my address it's donnybro@simplynet.net
I have a little book done by our side of the Osgatharp's and in it, your Grandmother is incorrectly listed as Almira Edna.
Then it says no more information.  So it's neat to run across her family.  I can tell you have done a lot of research. Mine has just been word of mouth and a few documents passed down.
My Grandmother kept up with her cousins all of her life even though after marrying my Grandpa she moved to Canada.  I will have to look through her trunk and see if I can find anything from your family.  She kept all kinds of letters.
G. Benton Osgathorpe
It's been a long time since anyone posted so hopefully you Osgathorpe users are still out there.  Does anyone have any documentation on G. Benton's first name?  My father says he doesn't think George is the correct name.  His father, G. Benton's grandson, had told him it was Gilbert and that he had an cousin Gilbert (son of Erasmus Gaw).  I've seen G. Benton's name written on the census as Gilbert, but I haven't seen the documentation for George.  Can anyone help with this?
Also, I just wanted to add a bit of information from my father.  I haven't seen any trees with an approximate death date for G. Benton (I could have missed some though).  He died before his last son William A. was born.  So somewhere between 1890 and 1891depending on the month William A. was born.  My father is certain of this because G. Benton's son John H. (my father's grandfather) died before his last son, Johnny, was born, so they would tell the story about this coincindence.  BTW, John H. died of tuberculosis.
Another note, my father says Harrison's middle name was Mitchell (not sure on the spelling).
Hi Clive,
You probably know this already, but there is an osgathorpe road in sheffield which once led to an osgathorpe hall. I went to a junior school in Sheffield called whiteways junior school. I rember one of my teachers telling me of how the hall had stood on the site that the school was built on.
I am very interested to know what you have found out about the name in the sheffield region as my grandfather Charles William Osguthorpe was born in Sheffield in 1897.
I think my great grandfather was also born in sheffield, but I will have to find out the details from my relatives and get back to you on that.
Cheers,
Steve.
Kathleen,
I am one of the cousins  from Oklahoma that met Nancy while in Tennessee. Susan Viola Cherry Osgatharpe died in Tulsa, (Dawson) Oklahoma probably between 1920 and 1930. We recieved some money from relatives in Tennesse and with it combined, we put a marker on her grave. She is buried in Duck Creek Cemetary in Catoosa, Oklahoma next to her daughter Mary Verda which was my great grandmother. We will definitely have to correspond. When we met Nancy, she said she would send us a copy of a book about the Osgatharpe family but we havent heard anything from her and it has been a few years. If you speak to her, tell her we are still waiting. (ha ha). I hope to hear from you soon.
I bet you WERE surprised to see the the surname on the boards. I requested it and was surpised to get a board! :) I am sorry to say I don't have any pictures of any Osgatharps (or whichever spelling you choose) at all. I do have some documentation as far as George's grandfather Richard's RW service, and some census records for some of the family. Not sure I have any for George though. Some of my information came from Harold McLerran many years ago and I haven't heard from in a long time now. Please feel free to email me and maybe we can determine if I have anything you might like to have. I am more than willing to share. I haven't been to that area in TN, even though I have been through TN a few times. I live in WA state and it is a long trip for me.
Re: G. Benton Osgatharpe
****I have a xerox copy of the marriage license for Benton Osgatharp and Susie Cherry****I also have a xerox copy of the Soldier's Application for Pension for G. B. Osgatharp**** (willing to share, email me!)
Jim, I see the problem you are having in identifying whether his name is George or Gilbert. In the 1850 Jackson County, 8th Civil Dist, page 173 it shows John OSGATHORP with his children that were still living in his household and listed is "Gilbert" B. Osgathorp. But also listed is "Adderson" P. and I am almost sure that his real name was Addison. I think Erasmus is correct and his middle name was Gaw as far as I know. I did look on the TN State Library and Archives site for Clay County Civil War records and it came back with these two results:
NAME:  Osgatharp,  E.G.
PENSION #:  S13797
UNIT:  13th Cav.
NAME:  Osgatharp,  G.B.
PENSION #:  S759
UNIT:  8th Cav.
This was a result in Ancestry that I found in CW service records:
Osgathorp A. P. F 28 (Consolidated) Tennessee Inf. Captain Captain 28 Tenn Inf Confederate
Osgathorp G. B. G 13 (Gore's) Tennessee Infantry. Private Private Oglethorpe Benton G Confederate
Osgathorp T. G. G 13 (Gore's) Tennessee Infantry. Private Private Oglethrope Tilman J Confederate
I have a copy of the TN CW Veteran's Questionaire for E. G. Osgatharp. He does not list his brother's first names other than by initial.
I haven't ever been able to difinitely come up with a first name for my ancestor, Almarinda/Almira Helen Osgatharp who married John W. Smith. She is listed by both first names in various censuses, and so I just chose one to use.
Richard Osgathorpe documentation
I am going to post some of the scanned documentaion that I have for Richard Osgatharp (and various spellings) on here so it might help out someone else who is researching the line. There are two pay vouchers for Richard, and so that is what the "4903" and "3662" numbers are all about. The information on both sides of them is important. I can see why the name was misspelled so often, as the script from that era makes it hard to determine the letters. Could be an "o" or an "a", and someone added an "L" just because there was a loop. I personally believe that his original name was Osgathorpe (with an e, or without, your choice). The land sale record from Poteet to "Ozgatharp" establishes Richard in the right place and right time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I have this:
BURKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA LAND GRANTS
Listed alphabetically, by surname
- K-R -
The following is a transcription of the Burke County Land Grants
as found in the card file by the same name. It can be found in the
North Carolina Room of the Burke County Library, Morganton, NC.
All rights to this list are reserved by the
Burke County Public Library System, Inc., Morganton, NC. (c) 2001
NAME, LAST        NAME, FIRST         DATE    NUMBER**
OSGATHARPE        Richard             1804		3594
OSGATHARPE        Richard             1804		3596
OZGATHORPE        Richard             1782		0310
OZGATHORPE        Richard             1782		0409
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/lg-3.txt
May 12, 2001
This was given to me in about 1995 by Harold McLerran, a Clay county researcher. This questionaire is a little confusing without the original questions to refer to. I have the original questionaire but did not scan it too. If you wonder what a question is about, please email me and I will look it up for you.
Jim,
George Benton was my grandmother, Nannie Watkin's father.
To my knowledge I do not have a picture of him, However, I
have some old pictures that I am going to show to my Uncle
Benton Watkins.  Hope he will be able to give them names.
I have not been able to get much information about the death
of Susan Viola.  I know she went to Oklahoma in the mid 1920's.  I was told she was buried in Dawson OK., Tulsa
County.
My counsin Nancy Smith visited some relatives in Dawson,
and was told no one can find her grave.  If you have any
information please advise.
I would love to have copies .
I have an old picture of my Grandmother Nannie with her kids
and husband.  Will be glad to send you copies.
My Uncle  is the only one left of his generation that I know of
other than Elmo Osgatharp, a son of John Osgatharp.
Will be glad to  share info with you,
Regards, Kathleen Monroe
1740 Perth St.
Toledo, Ohio 43607
Jim,
Hello Kathleen,
I don't know if this message will reach you or not but if it does, I would love to correspond with you about G. Benton Osgatharpe. His daughter, Mary Verda was my g grandmother. I have been searching for a picture of him. I have pictures of his wife Susan Viola Cherry (Survira) but none of him. I would appreciate it if you would respond. Thanks, Jim Harvey
