Hi, I'm interested in your info on Jacob Ostrom (1817-1899) and his parents Henry & Mary - the same group was in Monroe Co. NY in 1850 with the Gleasons. Trying to connect them to the old Ostrom family of NY.
Thanks, Jim
jaharder88 at yahoo.com

Albert is my 3rd great-grandfather. He was born in Oswego County, NY, and married to his first cousin, Sarah Jane Gleason, on December 1, 1865 in Van Buren County, Michigan. His children included Edmund, Adah, Mary, Carrie, Bessie, Henry, Albert, and Wallace. After Sarah's death, he married a second time to Margaret Jane in about 1897. His father Jacob also married Betsey Irish, and had several children with her. Jacob's parents are Henry and Mary (maiden name unknown). Jacob's sister Mary married Levi Gleason -- parents of Sarah. Have some additional information I can share.

Hi again:

You are certainly on the right track in how to trace your ancestors - start with the known and work back to the unknown. It is just like a puzzle where the pieces will fall into place.

On reviewing what you have posted, your ancestors are "pretty young" to find many public records and unfortunately I am not able to find them in the lines I have documented. The last census available is the early 1930's for the US so maybe you could start with the last one to work from there. Once you find somebody in the census then it should lead you backwards to the previously recorded census. Also, start looking into records that OR may have on their website.

As well, I am only tracing the "Dutch Ostroms" and your line may be from Sweden originally and I would have nothing on them. Sorry that I can't start you on a line but genealogy is really fun and finding just one more record will get you addicted. Good Luck.....

Sandra

I don't know a whole lot about my family line, but I'll give you everything I have. I appreciate anything you can link for me.
yself and my brother justin were born in portland oregon from scott e ostrom (nov 6, 196_) and jenifer aberle. Scott had a brother terry (12/2 9/52). Scott and terry were born from pauline wagamen (5/22/1925) & earnest robert ostrom. Earnests father was summner ostrom. From all I know we were all residents of oregon.

I hope this helps. I have no idea where I came from on my fathers side, and I am very grateful for anything you know.

I have over 19,000 names in my database of Ostroms and related families who reside all over the US and Canada.

Post your names and years of births/deaths (if you have them) and localities, and I will get back to you with what I have.
I am unable to place your Albert Ostrom at this time.

I have the father of the Albert Ostrom who married Sarah J. Gleason, as being John Griffon Ostrom who married Eliza Caroline Calhoun.

I must warn you - this is not my immediate line and therefore I have not researched this family in depth - you would need to find documentation to support the parent's names - just a starting point for you.

S.
I found a copy of Albert Ostrom's death cert. at: seekingmichigan.org On the certificate, it says that this Albert Ostrom's father was Jacob who was born in Connecticut, no date of birth. The information on the death cert was provided by Mrs. F Hemingway, possible daughter of Albert.

Could this Albert Ostrom be the same Albert who married Sarah Gleason and daughter Ada married a Hemingway?

However, I have her being married to Casparus Van Keuren.

I also agree with you about Henry Odell being the only known child of Joshua Odell & Maria Ostrom. He is the only one that I have found for this couple. I do not have a spouse listed for Henry Odell. Do you?

S.

Sorting out the Maria Ostroms is indeed challenging.

In your database, “Maria (Mary) Odell (1763) is the daughter of Jan Ostrom & Engeltje Storm.” Is there documentation or evidence for this identification?

I know of two church records from Dutchess County for Maria Odell:
Joshua Odell md Mary Ostrum 8 Feb 1781.
Joshua Odell & Mary Ostrum had Henry bp Oct. 28, 1781, sp. Henry Ostrum & Charity Ostrum.

Looking for more information about Henry & Charity (which name I’m told is the same as “Jartje”), I find:
Hendrik Oostrum & Jartje Swortwoud had a daughter Maria bp. Feb. 16, 1765, sp. Jacobus Oostrum, Lena du Boys.

Was it their daughter Maria who married Odell? I have also read that Henry and Charity’s Maria was their only known child, so it would be logical for them to be the sponsors of the Odell’s first child if he were their grandson. Of course, the sponsors’ relationship to the child is not stated in the records.

If there are other documents in the case, I would be happy to learn of them.
Hi Nell,
I can't add much to your discussion of Mary Ostrom who married Henry Klapp except to note that the Maria Ostrom who married Peter Flagler is clearly not the daughter of Jan Ostrom and Engeltje Storm for a number of reasons, most obviously because their daughter was born 1763 and didn't marry anybody in 1768, the marriage date for Maria & Peter Flagler. She is almost certainly the sister of this Jan, who sponsored their first son, so a daughter of Jan Ostrom & Claudina Relyea.
I can only add that your reasoning seems sound, and that the existing research on this group is unreliable.
Jim

Re: Maria Ostrom-Clapp connection

I’m going to try to answer my own question and suggest that the Mary (Maria) Ostrom who married Henry Clapp was the daughter of Jan Oostrum and Engeltje Storm.

From “Colonial Families of Philadelphia” and Ebenezer Clapp’s “The Clapp Memorial: Record of the Clapp Family in America” we learn that Henry Clapp (b. about 1760), son of Joseph Clapp and Mercy Carpenter of Dutchess Co., married Mary Ostrom and moved to the Albany area. After Henry died young, their eldest son Joseph (b. 1783) was educated under the care of his guardian Stephen Van Rensselaer, went to Philadelphia to study medicine (earning his degree in 1805), and became a very successful doctor there. The second son, John, began the study of medicine with Joseph but returned to New York, specifically Dutchess Co. where he married in 1805 and settled on his father-in-law’s farm in Lagrange. Joseph’s practice was so successful he sent for his brother Harvey who got a degree and joined his brother's practice. These brothers were the first in their line to use the spelling Klapp rather than Clapp.

Harvey Klapp (who is key to my hypothesis) was born in 1789 and "lived for many years near Poughkeepsie" before moving to Philadelphia where he got a medical degree in 1813.

Although the boys were born near Albany, it appears that, after Henry Clapp died, his family returned to Dutchess Co. The boys could easily have been taken in by a maternal relative. Living in a Dutch culture would explain the spelling change.

Jan Oostrum of Dutchess Co. married Engeltje Storm of Westchester Co. on Jan 21, 1748-9 at the First Reformed Church of Poughkeepsie, and they resided in Dutchess Co. Among other children, they had a daughter Mary (Maria) born on 12 May 1763, a suitable date for Mrs. Henry Clapp. They also had a daughter Hannah born on 3 May 1769. Hannah married Barton Flagler and had several children including Henry K. Flagler born in 1809 and Harvey Klapp Flagler born in 1813.

"Harvey Klapp" was a rare name. In fact, it appears to have been unique to Dr. Harvey Klapp in that time and place. For Barton & Hannah Flagler to name a child Harvey Klapp Flagler suggests that Hannah was the aunt of Mary Ostrom Klapp’s orphaned children.

It has been suggested that this Mary Ostrom married Peter Flagler, but Maria Flagler was born in 1747, which was before Jan Ostrom married Engeltje Storm.

It has also been suggested that this Mary Ostrom was the one who married Joshua Odell, though another suggestion is that Odell married Maria daughter of Barent Ostrom and Rebecca Westphael. With several contemporary Maria Ostroms in Dutchess Co. it can be difficult to say which married whom.

If anyone has any information to corroborate or disprove my hypothesis that Henry Clapp married the daughter of Jan Ostrom & Engeltje Storm, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Nell

Maria Ostrom-Clapp connection

I am trying to identify the Mary/Maria Ostrom who married Henry Clapp (b. abt. 1755-1760, Dutchess Co., NY) and had three sons (Joseph, John, and Harvey). Henry moved to the Albany area, but whether before or after marriage I cannot say. The Clapp genealogies say he died young, the boys were entrusted to the guardianship of Stephen van Rensselaer, and the family name was changed to Klapp.

The only information about her in the Clapp genealogies is her name and nationality. From the fact that Joseph and Harvey Klapp each named a child Mary Ostrom, I feel assured Henry did marry a woman by that name. Does anyone have any record of a Maria who married a Clapp or Klapp?

Nell

I was both pleased and disappointed to receive your post concerning the Ostram Family memorabilia . When I first received the notice from Ancestry that my old posting had a response, I had hoped that it would be from “Karen” who originally had been looking for information on her grandmother who was Lydia Ostrom. I lived in Norwood where her grandmother lived and had picked up the booklets there. And the information about the town of Norwood was accurate. I have held out hope all this time to hear from her because of her close relationship to this particular Lydia.

There were two postings from “Karen” at 8.01am and 8.54am January 5, 2001. The post of 8:01 ties in exactly with the information I have and that Karen is the woman I had hoped to hear from someday. I know it has been quite a long while since her post but perhaps she will see this one and contact me. She is Lydia’s granddaughter. I will hold on to them until I think there is no chance that she will contact me.
My name is Kathi Marie Ostrom, My grandfather was Henry Ostrom. He was Verners brother. He came to America and settled in Hoquiam Washington. He married his wife Thora and they had 3 children. Henry william, Nellie Agusta and John Oliver. Grandpa Henry changed his name from Ahrstrom when he came to this country. I am very interested in geneology and would love to talk to any relatives. I first started doing research 40 years ago, right after my grandpa Henry died, I was 11 at the time. I have worked on it off and on over the years. would love to share info. Kathi

Ostroms

I am researching my great grandparents Derrick Ostrom and Matilda Pitt. My grandmother Caroline Jane Ostrom married Thomas Bryson Cochrane. Unfortunately she passed away when my father was still young and as far as we know there are no pictures in the family of her parents. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would have photos they would be willing to share with me.
