South Carolina has records of all ships and their passengers entering Charleston. They can be found in the Council records.
This is what I have on this family;
Hans Jacob arrived in Charleston on the ship Cuniff in 1752 with his parents Jacob and Rugula and Jacob's mother , Rugala the surname spelling was Schneider . The spelling was apparently changed upon reaching the Americas as the Royal Grant shows the name spelled Snider

SNIDER Family Of ORANGE BURG S.C. Taken from the Orangeburg German -Swiss Genealogical Society third generation 6. Jacob Snider born Abt 1762 , Congaree, Orangeburg, South Carolina, married Susannah Oswalt, born Abt 1755, died Abt 1835, Tuscaloosa county, Alabama. Jacob died Abt 1810, Juniper , Lexington, S.C. Susan Oswalt, killed Abt 1835, when her Pony fell on an icy bridge in Tuscaloosa County, Al, Jacob Snider land bounds William Powel Riddle 's land on branches of Rocky Creek waters of Saluda river, surveyed 19 July 1796. ( Charleston series SC state plats, vol. 32, pg. 643; Josiah Snider, A Snider history, pp, 1895; and Brent Holcomb, Memorialized records of Lexington district, S.C. 1814-1825 ). ref: J Hughes Aug 97
S52:1790 US Census- Orangeburgh District; S.C. North Parte pp.95 Jacob Snider-1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 4 females. Served in Revolutionary War under General Putman. "at one time the British or Tories went to his ( Jacob ) house while he was in the army and frightened the women and children off the place and rifled the place of provisions, and ripped the bed tricks and poured the feathers out; they supposed they did it in search of money or jewelry."
The Sniders, along with Weavers, Seas (Sees), Oswalts, Kysers, Sanfords and Prices migrated from South Carolina to Tuscaloosa, Alabama by wagon train. According to "The Descendants of Dutch Pioneers, The Early Settlers of Dutch Bend (Autauga County) Alabama," there were 69 families who departed the Orangeburgh District in about 1818. They had an army escort because of Indian problems. They followed the Federal Highway, and went through Georgia, near what is now Augusta, then on to Macon, thence west to the area south of Autaugaville, AL, known as Dutch Bend. The Sniders ultimately settled west of there, in the valley of the Black Warrior River. Many later moved on to Texas. This migration followed the end of the Creek Wars. When the Creeks lost their land, it was opened for settlement at about the same time Alabama was preparing for statehood. What followed was something of an "Alabama Fever" with settlers moving west for more land.

You said: "My family records show a Susanna Oswalt, b abt 1755 in SC, married to a Hans Jacob Schneider, b 1742 in Switzerland (I have his family immigration records)."

Can you send to me the family immigration records? It would be interesting to me as I am unaware that South Carolina kept or has such records.

I can tell you that the Schneider families came from Nöttingen Germany and arrived in Charleston South Carolina in 1744. This was the family of Hans Jacob Schneider and Anna Maria Deg-Schneider and Johann Jacob Schneider and his wife, Anna Rosina Schlägel-Schneider. This is completely documented information. It was Johann Jacob Schneider's son, Jacob Snider who married Susanna Oswalt. Attached is the newspaper notice of the St. Andrew arrival in South Carolina.

Susanna Oswalt who maried a Croy

In research, I came across a statement that Susanna Oswalt Croy was freed by the presidential Emancipation Proclamation in Oct 1864. Here is what I copied:

Susanna Oswalt was born in Pennsylvania 1784. She married Andrew Croy in Stark Co, Ohio, 22 AUG 1803. She was freed by the presidential Emancipation Proclamation 28 OCT 1864.

Anyone have any knowledge of this, or could it be an error?
Thanks

I'm not sure who the Mary A Bixler is married to Henry Oswalt. Do you have her parents?

Elanor first married Henry Oswalt on 22 Nov 1860. She then married George Brooks on 06 May 1866. I don't have any birth or death dates for Elanor's Henry to know if it was death or divorce that ended the marriage.

I do know that Mary E Oaks was estranged from her Henry Oswalt for years before her death.

I did have the information on both of Samuel's wives though I did not have the name Bodkins for Mary Ann.

I have Mary A Bixler married to Henry Oswalt b 1856. I did a quick search and found a Mary E Oaks first married to a William Henry Bixler 1831-1880 they married June 18, 1858. She then married Henry Oswalt Feb 9, 1888. This Henry was born in 1824.
I saw where her sister Elanor Oaks married a Geroge Brooks.
Samuel married a Mary Ann Oswalt Bodkins April 1869, then he married a Clarissa Lambert Dalton in Nov 1916, looks like after Mary Ann Oswalt Bodkins dies.
It does not look like it is the same Henry Oswalt, there are many of them, so it gets confusing.

Thank you so much for the response. It's a shame that most researchers don't respond to a request and then criticize the book for failing to include their family. Unfortunately your information, though I'm sure is very good, isn't from the area that i am researching. My Oswalt/d families came through Charleston S.C. in the 1750's then the descendents moved west. Again, I thank you for the response.

Fred

As of now I have most of the descendants of Solomon Oswalt, but am in the process of verifying what my sister and our father's cousin, Edward Jordan, put together in the 1960s.
Most of this branch came from Darke and Preble Counties, OH, to northern Indiana. I have a little back to J. Heinrich Oswald, especially his son and grandson Daniel Sr and Jr. I do not have a scanner, so I would have to mail you anything you are interested in.
Larry Oswalt, Colorado Speings, CO

Jacob and Susannah Oswalt Snider

Dewey, I wish there was someway to make people understand that during the same time there were two Jacob Snider (Schneider) families coming to America. One Jacob married Mary (Till?) and the other married Susannah Oswalt. The ship carring Jacob Snider (who married Susannah) put in at Charleston, SC which you have proven. As the 4th great-grandaughter to Jacob and Susannah I am trying to make sure that all information I locate is factual. Until I can prove it as fact based, I have to call it a theory. I just wanted to tell you thank you for all the proven documentation on seperating these two Jacobs and all the documentation you were able to collect on the ships and in Germany. Thanks for all you do.
