Living in Utah does put you right where the information is, doesn't it? I did some research at the Family History Center here and then found that one of the local libraries has a really good research section where I found a lot of information. Then I started using the Internet and it seems that the information there is almost endless.

How interesting that your cousin Jane lives in St. Pete as I do. (I suppose she's my cousin Jane, also). It's truly a small world!

It does seem that we have been looking at some of the same documents. I'm going to be spending more time looking at Wentworths now than I had before.

I hope you'll be able to get information from the researcher who's interested in the Van Slykes. I'm sure there's lots of information out there that we've no clue about.

Do you know why James Van Slyke became a Wentworth? Was he running away, too?

Fran

My name is Alisa Alexander and up until 3 years ago, I lived in Fort Myers, FL! I now live in southern (Kanab)Utah. My cousin Jane (great granddaughter of Adam/Alonzo)lives in St. Pete, FL and I have contacted her for more info.

I forgot to consider the consequences of the 1905 earthquake. How lucky for you to find what you did.

Jane has the John Wentworth books. I think you and I have many of the same source documents.

Yesterday, I went to the local Mormon Family History Center to see if they could help me. Someone inside the church is researching Adam W Van Slyck. I hope they will allow me to pursue/exchange data. Since I am not a member, I will have to depend on the kindness of the local genealogist.

I do know about our connection to the Mohawk Turtle Clan but did not know about the "Terrible Billingtons" or the "Strangers."

Fascinating!! Talk to you again soon, Alisa

Hi, again,

It is like a mystery, isn't it? And fun, too.

I don't know very much about the Wentworths because I've been concentrating on the Van Slykes, so I can't tell you anything about James.

Have you done research on the Van Slykes? If so, I'm sure you are familiar with the Mohawk story and the "Terrible Billingtons" who came over on the Mayflower - not as Pilgrims, but as "Strangers".

Your newspaper clippings are wonderful. I don't have anything like that for Isabelle because the earthquake destroyed so many records in San Francisco. I only found the record of her suicide by great good luck - it was in a book in the basement of a little library in San Franciso where it had been put after the earthquake.

Do you have the obituary that was posted for Margaret Wentworth from the Pickaway Co. Death records? I just found it and can send it if you don't have it.

Here is something I found about Adam/Alonzo: Adam Alonzo Wentworth Van Slyke, born 27 October 1819, took the name of Wentworth; married, at Kenosha, Wis., in 1843, Eliza Otis, daughter of Rev. Otis, of Boston, Mass., or vicinity;
Married 2d, August 1853, widow Margaret J. (Everts) Walt, and lived in Circleville, Ohio.
He had, by his first wife : Isabelle Marie Van Slyke, born 1845; married, 1862, Thomas Beaver, and lived in California.

From John Wentworth The Wentworth Genealogy: English and American (Vol. 2) p. 44

About your great grandfather's death certificate: Adam/Alonzo was born in
Lisbon, New London, CT. The Van Slykes were in New York for a long time, then went to Connecticut and from there to Wisconsin.

Your great grandfather's death was very sad. Perhaps the melancholia was part of Isabelle's problem, too.

I am assuming that we are cousins since Adam/Alonzo belongs to both of us.
My name is Fran Harper and I live in St. Petersburg, FL. Isabelle was my mother's great grandmother on her mother's side.

I have just "found" my great grandfather's (William HIgginson Wentworth, son of Adam/Alonzo)death certificate. He died July 24, 1912 (not Christmas). Suicide, Formaldehyde, Delusional Melancholia. Death certificate says his father was born in England.

I have photos of her half brother, William Higginson Wentworth, and he was very handsome. He was a successful insurance man who loved his little daughters.

Regarding Adam/Alonzo, the newspaper clipping I have is from "The Grayson correspondent of the Ashland (Kentucky) Independent, of the 19th"...but no year. In the article, it states that, "in 1876, he drew from the bank at this place $80, being all he had on deposit at the same time informing the cashier that he was going to visit his children, some of whom he said lived in Ohio and some in Michigan." He was absent a month or more and seems to have died shortly thereafter.

I have a newspaper clipping from the Southport Telegraph (Southport, Wisc) dated Feb 27, 1844 that is a legal notice. Jared Lake vs Adam W. Van Slyck. Apparently, Mr. Lake was suing Adam in a writ of attachment for monies owed. If not paid by Mar 27, 1844, Adam's property was to be seized.

Do you know anything about a brother James who also left and changed his name to Wentworth?

This is fun! I love mysteries and you have provided so many clues. Thank you.

I have a picture of Isabelle and she was a really beautiful young woman - perhaps she took after her father.

I guess that Adam/Alonzo was probably fairly well educated for the time since the Van Slykes seem to have been pretty prosperous. And, of course, medicine didn't require all the training that people go through now. Perhaps he started out to be a dentist and got sidetracked.

When did Alonzo die? Do you have any idea about why he was disowned?

I have found Alonzo on the 1860 census with Margaret J. in Ohio (his occupation was listed as a "hatter")
I haven't heard of Adam Windfort Van Slyck, but he must be the same person, since the parents are the same. When did he die?
Adam/Alonzo seems to have been quite the guy! It's interesting that evidently two of his children committed suicide.

Frances Harper
I have more to share with you. However, one question: Is Adam Windfort Van Slyck (father was Adam H/mother was Matilda Webb Wentworth) the same man as Adam Alonzo Wentworth Van Slyck? If yes, then Alonzo Wentworth married Margaret Jane Everts of Circleville, OH in 1853. They had three children. Alonzo abandoned this family and disappeared again. We have an newspaper obit notice from the Ashland (KY) Independent announcing that Dr. A. Wentworth had died. The obit mentions letters to Martha J Wentworth in Circleville, OH. Their son, William Higginson Wentworth was my great-grandfather. He committed suicide Christmas 1912. I look forward to hearing from you again. Thank you.

Thank you for your response. The story you have about AdamVan Slyke's being disowned by his family would explain why he disappeared. His full name was Adam Alonzo Wentworth Van Slyke, so he could just have used his middle names to create a new identity.

Isabelle Van Slyke and Thomas Beaver were my great great grandparents. Here is what I have found out since my posting: Adam W. Van Slyke and Eliza Otis were married 1/30/1843 in Racine, WI. Their daughter, Isabelle Marie Van Slyke was born 8/3/1845 in Wisconsin. Eliza and Isabelle were living with Eliza's father, Eurastus Otis at the time of the 1850 census in Wisconsin.

In 1860, Eliza and Isabelle were living in Bibb County, Alabama. Eliza had remarried, to a man named David Scott.

In 1862 (July 17) Thomas William Beaver and Isabelle Marie Van Slyke were married in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI. The witnesses were Mr. & Mrs. E.H. Scott. According to our family history, Thomas and Isabelle had met on the train (he was a conductor), fell in love, and were married when they got to Wisconsin. He was 27, she was 17.

My great grandmother, Estelle Scott Beaver was born 1/15/1864 in LaCrosse, WI. She died 12/6/1957 in Danville, PA.

In 1870, Thomas and Isabelle (Bell) and their daughter were living in San Francisco. Thomas and Isabelle got divorced and Isabelle married Henry Abbott on 11/2/1871. Isabelle died on March 27th, 1872 in San Francisco (where she was buried) after having taken strychnine. Thomas took my great grandmother to Pennsylvania, where his family was and she grew up there. None of the things, like divorce and suicide were ever discussed (if anyone knew about them other than Thomas, anyway). Thomas died in 1907 in Pennsylvania. He never remarried and referred to himself as a widower.

Eliza Otis Van Slyke Scott died in 1884 in Massachusetts.
My family was told Eliza Otis Van Slyck had died. Years later, we have discovered that not only did she live but remarried T Beaver. Legend has it, Adam left when the Van Slyke family disowned him. He changed his name to Alonzo Wentworth, moved to Circleville, Ohio, married Margaret Everts and had three children. Alonzo abandoned that family and eventually died in KY. I have been trying to find documents to verify this story. No luck yet.

Parshal Joseph info

I was doing some research on the Otis branch of our family. I've got a copy of the book by William A. Otis, "A Memoir of the Otis Family in America" published in 1924. I found an error in the book as pertaining to Parshal Joseph Otis. What brought it to light was when I was on the Find a Grave website it showed him buried with his wife Betsy. In the book it shows him being married twice with the first wife's name unknown and his second wife being Louisa North. Upon reviewing the 1850 through 1880 Federal Census records it appears that his first wife was Louisa who must've died somewhere between 1860 and 1870. His second wife was Betsy as he was married to her in the 1870 Federal Census records. It appears that his children starting with Frederick Emerson Otis (my 2Great-grandfather) where Betsy's children and not Louisa North's children as is listed in the book. Hope this clears up any inconsistencies there may be in the family trees.

I would love to see what information you have on Ebenezer Hayden Otis. My 4th great grandfather was an Ebenzer Hayden Otis, but according to our records, he died 10 Feb 1858, and is buried in Linwood Cemetery, Colchester, New London, CT. The strange thing is that I believe his mother's maiden name was Weidger.

I have conflicting birth information, as the Barbour Collection lists a birth for a Hayden Otis, born 23 Nov 1794, in Lyme, New London CT, to Stephen and Lucy Otis. However, I found a marriage record, in the U.S. and International Marriage records, for an Ebenezer Hayden Otis, and Mary Lord, which lists his birth year as 1819.

Any information that you might have on him would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Wilsonfam7

I looked in my book A Memoir of the Otis Family in America by William A. Otis. In there I found the Shubael Otis who married Abigail Thomas. It listed twelve children and _____Tremain married their daughter Amanda b. Feb 19, 1825. That is all the information they show for this daughter. They show Mary Ann marrying Rev. Daniel Dorchester. I don't know if this helps at all but it may open other avenues to look.

If anyone is interested, I have Thomas and Carrie's family Bible. It is a 1870 Harding Edition KJV Holy Bible. There are some family records in it. This Bible ended up belonging to my great grandmother. I am not sure if there is any family connection or not. I didn't think she was related to Thomas and Carrie. Her name was Georgia Lynn Patton (maiden name Johns)...

Thomas was born June 10th 1831 in Montville, Conn. and died Jan. 30, 1908 in Claremont, CA. Married Carrie Arnold July 31st 1865. Carrie was born Nov. 4th 1842 in south Kingstown, RI and died June 26, 1880 in Hyde Park, Chicago. On July 15, 1882 Thomas married Ella H. Freeborn. Ella was born Mar. 17, 1847 in Wickford, RI and died July 18, 1928 in Oakland, CA.

I have been looking for info on Frank M Otis (b.1842 Oswego New York) I have found Frank and his wife Catherine Western living with Oliver Otis (b. 1790-1) and his wife Rachel Thomas (b. 1798) in Scriba NY on the 1870 census. I originally thought that Oliver and Rachel were the parents of Frank but now think I may be missing a generation.
Do any of these names fit in with anything you have found?
Any information you could share would be appreciated

We're all working on branches of the same Otis tree. How can we all get together - pool our fragmented data - and build a complete James Otis/Ann Waite family for 3 generations? Maybe back in time a few generations?

[Why 3? That would get us all to a point where we knew the rest of the story. Living folks wouldn't have parents listed.]

Delphina A. (Keating) Otis, w/o Ebenezer Otis, Maine and Massachusetets

I have no connection to this family. This appeared in the July 24, 1908 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"Mrs. Delphina A. (Keating) Otis, widow of Hon. Ebenezer Otis, formerly of this city, died last Monday, July 20, at the home of her son, Mr. John Otis, 37 William street, Worcester, Mass., where she had made her home for many years. The family is well and kindly remembered here, and Mrs. Otis had many friends who will ever honor her memory. She was born in Whitefield, June 26, 1822, and was the daughter of James and Margaret Keating. She was baptized by Bishop John Lafavre de Cherverus, the first Catholic bishop of Boston, while he was on his last visit to Maine. She married Hon. Ebenezer Otis, of St. George, a prominent lawyer and political leader who long represented his town in legislature and was a man of great influence in the community in which he lived. About 1870, the family removed to this city, and residesd in the house on Highland street now the house of Mr. A.R. Weeks, until the death of Mr. Otis, some 10 years later, after which the family removed to Worcester. Mrs. Otis has resided in Worcester since 1883. She is survived by three sons - George K., Edwin R. and John, all of Worcester. The funeral was held from St. Paul's church in Worcester on Tuesday morning, and the remains were taken to Thomaston, where they were interred in the Catholic cemetery on Wednesday."

Abner Lord Otis and Almira Goddard

I am the 3rd great granddaughter of Abner Lord Otis. I know that he married Almira Goddard in Feb 1846. Yesterday, I found evidence that he sailed to California, on the "Henry Lee", in Feb. 1849, leaving Almira, and 2 children, Eliza Jane and Roy Nelson, "California" with Almira's parents.

I don't know what happened to Abner from that point. Almira passed away in 1852, and is buried in the Granby Street Cemetery.

Does anyone have any additional information regarding this family? I also know that Abner had another wife, Rachel Brewster, that passed away in 1843. They had a son, Abner Day Otis, who died from disease during the Civil War.

I would love to know what happened to Abner L. He was part of the Hartford Unified Mining and Trading Company.

Thank you,
Lisa Wilson

An addendum to my last message...

Now that I've read your whole thread, I see all these James' can be quite confusing. I was talking about James Francis Otis who is the son of Thomas T. Otis and Annie Grant. He was born 11 Oct 1879 in Jersey City, NJ. All his life he dreamed of being a cowboy. When he was old he enough, he headed out to Nevada and became a ranch hand. He then became a foreman and finally bought his own place in Paradise Valley, NV. He married Gertrude Fancis Coleman of Paradise Valley and they had 8 kids. Their sixth child is Lois Gertrude Otis, who is my grandmother.

I have pictures of James Francis Otis with Lois' daughter Jean, who is my aunt. I also have a picture of the horse he sold to Wyatt Earp, which is kind of a fun story in our family. Gertrude Francis Coleman was known as Gammy to my mother and I used to love hearing stories about Gammy when I was a child. Email me if you would like anymore info.

Melissa
melissapom@juno.com

Hi. Are you still looking for info and pictures of Thomas T. Otis and his son James? The story of James is a favorite family story. Plus I have pictures of him with one of his grandaughters and also with a horse he sold to Wyatt Earp! James's wife was Gertrude who was my mother's favorite grandmother and a wonderful person. The old story about her is how she was going to the bank one day and Jesse James came to rob it. She said that he was very polite to her and told her he didn't want to rob her, just the bank. I don't know if it's true or not but it was a favorite story. anyway, I have lots of info about the Otis family. You can find me as Melissapom1 on Ancestry.com and connect with my family tree.

Let me know if you have any questions or anything.

Melissa
Otis family in Alabama - 1860 to 1900

I am looking for information about the Otis family in Alabama. My great grandmother was Harriet (aka Hattie) Otis, who married Frank Howard Perry in about 1891 in Mobile, Alabama. Later census records report that she was born in Alabama. She had two children - Kate Perry (b. in Alabama in 1892) and Joseph Bancroft Perry (my grandfather, born in Tuscaloosa Alabama 1895). Hattie died in 1897, and the trail goes cold.

Family history reports that her father worked on riverboats, and that he was born in either Wales or the Isle of Man. Although I can't prove a link, I wonder if she is descended from John Otis, who was born about 1810, and came to the US no later than 1870 with his wife Ann(e) Otis (b. 1820) and children Thomas (b. 1846), John (b. 1850) and Catherine (b. 1853). Tracing this family through the 1900 census, the family members report themselves as coming from England, Ireland, or the Isle of Man (in the channel b/t England and Ireland), so their history fits neatly with our oral history.

I have a theory that either John or (more likely) Thomas was Hattie Otis's father, but have found no proof. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has any history on this family.

Many thanks.
