Hi Tom!

Thanks for the further information. It's interesting to me to similar patterns. My Mary Ann, who was born in Ireland in 1835 and moved with her family to Ontario in before 1837, had a brother who moved to Washington state.

I suspect that the families who ended up in Canada were probably cousins. So, we might be related! Very distantly... :-)

Hi Maureen

One of my Great Great Grandfather's Thomas Ovens' Daughter's was named Mary Ann Ovens. She was born in Durham County, Ontario in 1853. Also, the first Son was William John Ovens. Another Ovens in the Durham County area had a first Son named William John. With the naming patterns used back then I thought a good possibility Thomas' Father's name could have been William I did find a William Ovens in the Durham County area who would seem to have been the right age to be Thomas' Father. My Ovens family relocated to Simcoe County, Ontario in the 1860's.

When I studied it I thought Irishmacsaint may have been part in Donegal and part in Fermanagh in Ireland. A land record for Ontario, is my only clue that our family came from Fermanagh County.

After my Grandfather's first marriage, his first wife and 2 Ovens children moved to California. They were Wilfred Ovens and Mildred Ovens, both deceased in the 1990's I think. Wilfred never had children.

Wish I knew more. I was named after my Grandfather, Thomas Wilfred Ovens, and he was a very kind and special person.

Thanks!! Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

My ggg/father James Ovens was born in Ireland and moved to North Marysburg, Ontario in 1860 with his wife Emily and his oldest daughter Mary Ann (my gg/grandmother). He was a farmer.

We think his father was William Ovens b. 1773 in Tulnagoan, Inishmacsaint, Donegal, Ireland.

I'm interested in all things Ovens. I would appreciate any information others might have about the Ovens family.

Maureen Shea

I live in California.
Hi Annette:

I had never heard of the facts you provided for that time frame and for Ireland. Thank you very much for taking the time to write and explain. I will certainly keep this in mind for my Ovens ancestor and a couple of other ancestors who arrived in Ontario prior to the main Irish famine. (I had read about "promotions" the Canadian government issued to those in England during the 1860s or 1870s; I didn't consider the same thing may have been done for an earlier time and place.)

Tom and Annette:
My mum remembers reading a family bible (sadly, no longer in our possession) stating Ovens names, years and places of birth. This lead our search to Co. Donegal and Co. Fermanagh during the 1960's. While we were in Ireland, my mum visited "Honora", whom she thought was a distant relative. They compared stories, family members leaving Ireland, and family resemblances and photos - it appeared that our families were distantly related.

Since my gggf had been living in New Jersey during the 1840s and settled in Ontario, Canada, I thought there might have been a connection with the Ovens who immigrated to Ontario c1847.

A very kind man who was living near Ottawa, Ontario (whom has since passed away) had a wealth of Ovens information. Within a couple of weeks I will find and go through his information to see if there might be something helpful for you, Tom.

Again, Annette, thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Lisa
Although I'm not searching this family myself I do get a notice when someone replies to the postings. My husband's family was from Ireland, leaving before the 1840's, many Protestant then later immigrants left Ireland long before the famine 1818 for the Codd's who became Code's in Canada.
We assumed that a David Code (first settler George Code) of Perth, Ontario and a William Code 1813 descendants from Smith Fall's Ontario would be related, we had DNA tests done to the surprise of all there was no match. The families lived 20 miles apart in Lanark Co. and 20 miles apart in Wicklow Ireland and attended the same church turned out not to match!! Many left Ireland especially if Protestant for being loyal to the British Crown during 1798 and subsequent years. Rather than becoming Catholic when lands started being returned to their original irish owners
the 'anglo-irish' chose to come to Canada for 100 acre Grants, provisions and equipment for 1 year, and improvements. The British Army had a big installation at Enniskillen or Inniskillen - you can see more just be googling the name.Annette

Hi Tom:

I would prefer to reply offline; thank you for your email address.

Note:
We visited Ireland when I was young and my mum found whom we thought was a distant relative. It's a long story (one that I can explain in an email) but apparently whom we thought was our ancestor is actually distantly related to one of the Ovens whom Annette found (the military fellow, living in Enniskillen). We are now finding a bit of information that once again may link us to the lady in Ireland. I have a feeling that the Ovens in Ontario were perhaps cousins who left Ireland within a few years of each other.

Thank you again for replying to my message. I look forward to corresponding and sharing photos.

Kind regards,
Lisa

Hi Lisa

Thanks so much for the message!! I continue also to seek information for my Ovens ancestors. I believe my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Ovens and my Great Grandfather William John Ovens were both farmers (likely fruit) in Ontario. My understanding is that Thomas and his wife Margaret immigrated to Canada about 1847 (likely during the potato famine). Annette did give some excellent info. I think until I can find a marriage record or something showing the parentage of each, I'm stuck, but I keep searching.

I'm not aware of my Ovens ancestors being in Toronto, but I believe my Great Grandfather's wife Sarah McAllister and/or her parents may have lived in Toronto for a time. Some of my other side of McMullan's did live in Toronto for a time. I believe my Ovens did live in Hope (or New Hope) which isn't far from Toronto for a time.

I thought Ovens was a fairly uncommon name, until I looked at some of the records for Fermanagh, Ireland. Seems that may have been one of the "breeding grounds" for them?

Thomas was born about 1824, so it's possible he could be a brother or maybe even a cousin of your ancestor. It was actually on a land record of Nottawasaga that I found Thomas was from county Fermanagh, Ireland.

My Grandfather was Thomas Wilfred Ovens and he was a Business College instructor, owner, principal, etc. He started and worked for quite a number of business colleges in Canada and across the United States. His Mother, maiden name Sarah McAllister was a teacher in Ontario before she married.

I'd love to see the photo of your Ovens ancestors. If you'd like to email off ancestry my email is tomwdcraftr@juno.com

I do have photos of my Great Grandfather William John Ovens and my Grandfather Thomas Wilfred Ovens here at my family tree. I'll send you an invite to my family tree so you can look at the photos I have.

My McMullan/McMillan ancestry is also from Ireland, and that has also been quite a project. I have found marriage information from County Down, but can't go back any further until I know more. I've had considerable help from a Yahoo County Down Group.

Thanks!!

Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

Several years ago I was in contact with three people in Ontario who were trying to find the Irish birthplace of their Ovens' ancestors. At that time, we did not find a link between our ancestors (nor, I believe, their birthplaces), but we believed there was the possibility that our ancestors were related.

My gggrandfather was John Ovens, born c1809, Ireland. John was living in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1850 with his wife and children; he was a teacher. I do not know when he arrived in North America but it appears it was prior to 1842. He settled in Toronto in the early 1850's. He eventually owned a fancy goods establishment in Toronto which stayed in the family for decades.

On the 1881 Ontario Census, he is shown with his wife and children and Jennie Stinson, age 20, born in Ontario. We believe there is the possibility that John's parents were William Ovens and Elizabeth Stinson.

I would be very interested in hearing from you, Tom, should you wish to compare information. I also have a couple of photos of my Ovens ancestors should you wish to compare family features.

PS I was quite interested in the excellent research by Annette!

Kind regards,
Lisa
Living in California, born in Ontario

Hi My mothers maiden name is Ovens (now Carole Janssens) and she has just returned from 2 weeks in Ireland doing family history. She has a wealth of information including where the family home was and their links to other families in Ireland. Major John Ovens ended up being the Aide de Camp for governor Brisbane in the early days of Australia and is burried in Sydney. Not sure of the dutch connection but there is almost certainly a Scottish connection and there seems to have been a close link to the linen trade so this may be another reason for the name being in Northern Europe. My mum is really happy to share her info so if you want to get in touch with me I can put you in contact please feel free to emailing me direct
kind regards
Gaby Stewart email gabystewart66@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Annette

Thanks so much for looking into all that!!

The 1881 Canada census for the Thomas & Margaret Ovens in Nottawasaga you show would be my Great Great Grandparents. In 1881 my Great Grandfather William John Ovens would have been married and on his own, so the one for William and Sarah Ovens would be them (but, I believe Sarah was actually born in Ontario and not Scotland---her McAllister parents were from Scotland though, so perhaps a mistake of the census taker). The 2 year old Thomas is my Grandfather. I do have most of the Canada census info.

I'll be looking through the information you provided.

Very much appreciated!!

Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

Using the Griffith Valuations for Ireland and Fernmanagh in 1862. There were 21 Ovens in Fermanagh 1862, and 5 Guthrie's
The Parish they have in common was Parish Inishmacsaint where there were 9 Ovens and 3 Guthrie's. The only other ovens were ovens!

Hopefully some of the Irish information will help you find more parish records.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

Thomas Ovens & Margaret Guthrie of Fermanagh Immigrate to Canada Abt 1847

I'm looking for information about my Great Great Grandparents Thomas Ovens and Margaret Gurthrie. I believe Thomas was born about 1824 and Margaret perhaps between 1824 and 1828? At this point I assume they married in Ireland before immigrating to Ontario about 1847. Indications are they had my Great Grandfather William John Ovens in Ontario about 1849 and he was the first child.

From the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA) it appears they are both buried in the Stayner Union Cemetery in Nottawasage, Simcoe, Ontario.

Am hoping to possibly find information on births, marriage, immigration, family info in Ireland, etc.

In 1861 they were in Hope, Durham, Ontario, and later I know they were in Nottawasaga, Simcoe, Ontario.

Thanks so much!!

Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

Hi, bit of a long shot this, but have just discovered that my great grandmother who had birth cert name Agnes Boyd Thomson also sometimes was recorded as Ovens Thomson. She was born Langholm I think. I have been informed that family who remained in Scotland went by Ovens Thomson rather than the Boyd Thomson. Can't make head nor tail of things, any help appreciated. Her first marriage was to a Heskett, James I believe.

thanks g

My Great Great Grandfather was Thomas Ovens born about 1824 I believe in Fermanagh Co., Ireland. I did find him on the 1861 census in Hope, Durham, Ontario. He was married to Margaret Guthrie who was also from Ireland and they may have married there before immigrating.

Their oldest Son was William John Ovens (my Great Grandfather) born in Canada about 1848, so they apparently immigrated some time before that.

Would seem Thomas could have been related to Hugh?

Thanks, Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

I'm looking for information on heritage about my Great Grandparents---William (John I belive) Ovens and his wife maiden name Sara or Sarah McAlister. From the 1881 census it appears William was born approx. 1849 and Sarah about 1847. I belive their children were: Mary Amelia, Archibald, Thomas Wilfred (my Grandfather), Florence, Nina Gertrude, and Mabel (maybe others?--I know a twin of my Grandfather died early possibly at birth). In 1881 the census place shows Nottawasage, Simcoe North, Ontario and I know my Grandfather lived in Barrie, Ontario before moving to the states in the early 1900's. I'd like to know more about my Great Grandparents---if the immigrated---the census shows William of Irish Ancestry and Sarah of Scottish ancestry---but, shows born in Ontario and I was of the impression they immigrated? Also, am very interested in more information about their children and decendents of all. My Grandfather (Thomas Wilfred Ovens (note--some online info shows his middle name incorrectly as Wilford-- born Jan. 8, 1879 and died April 1964) started and taught in a number of Business Colleges---I know he was in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Alberta, Canada, Vancouver, WA, Portland, OR and Camas, WA where I hail from. Thanks so much!!! (My name is Thomas Wilfred McMillan)

Dear Kelie-ann

I am related to your Thomas Ovens - I have heaps of information on him as he is a convict - his trial document etc. He was assigned with his wife to Hassall's farm at Cobbitty, Matavai named for the Bay in Tahiti where the Hassalls were missionaries previous to settling in Australia and by the next generation his first son, John Ovens owns land at Burrowa, NSW near Canberra. I am intending to go there before the end of the year. I have the connections to my own generation. Hope that helps. Hassal's family history is on the web as they are really a "first" family and their early history parallels Thomas's as he went to Burrowa as a servant to Hassal's son who was given land by Gov. Macquarie. His wife Elizabeth, younger than him of course was assigned for 14 years when he was assigned 7 years. So she as still a convict when he had hos ticket of leave.

all the best with your search - if I can be of any assistance just let me know.

Carolyn (Ovens)

Your message is a few months old so I am wondering if you will see this and respond. I am hunting for the family of Gardiner (Gardner?) Ovens who allegedly married a lady by the surname of Marr. At some point Gardiner came to New Zealand but whether it was before (or after) marriage is still unsolved. Looking forward to hearing from you...
Gail

JHello I was born Carole Ann Ovens. Parents John Leonard Ovens & Violet Bessie Woodcock. Grandfather John Lucas Ovens, born in the military barracks hospital in Weeldon, Warrickshire. Irish connection to the Ovens of County Fermanagh. Major John Ovens who was ADC to governor Brisbane in New South Wales was related to my great grandfather. He did not marry. The Ovens river and Ovens valley are named after him. He was an engineer and explorer and did much for the Governor in organising the convict work parties in clearing the land for farming. Lieutenant John Ovens who was in the same regiment, wife Georgina is probably a cousin of the Major. I have yet to visit Ireland to find out more, but know they were all military men. Maybe you are descended from John & Georgina? If so we are related!Kind regards Carole

I have an Ovens connection. A William Ovens B abt 1814 in Ireland married (I suspect) Emily Riddle abt 1840 in KY or TN. They had the following children:
Emma J, Eliza, James WIlliam, John A, Charles all born in the 1840s in TN and then Albert G born in the early 1850s in Indiana.
Emma never married. John and Charles seem to disappear in the 1860s (Civil war??) and it appears Albert and his wife Josephine didn't have any children. I also have reason to believe that the father William Ovens and his wife Emily Riddle died in the 1850s as their children were in my Riddle lines' census' in the 1860s.
