I'm no closer to connecting the dots, but just wanted to let you know that someone else out there is searching too! Feel free to check out my tree if it helps!

Re: Reuben B. Overton

To bring this thread up to date (16 Feb 2012), I did have my DNA tested to discover the correct Overton line. The test demonstrated that I am Clan 6 Overton, which is in fact related to the Howerton line. Reuben B. Overton would therefore have been a Howerton somewhere back in his line. The name shifted in the records beginning in the late 1700s.

I have not to date been able to verify any antecedents for Reuben B. Overton, either from Oveton or Howerton.

I note that in some references, Reuben is called 'Gad', but I have not been able to make any connections using that as a possible source, nor have I been able to determine the source of the name.

Some of the sub-threads have mentioned the Lefler line. I also have that, but my Lefler connection is indirect. Robert B. Overton (b 1811, KY), the son of Reuben, married a Margaret Lefler (b 1809). She was NOT a Lefler, but was the adoptive daughter of a man named Lefler. Her original surname was Yant (Yount). From what I have been able to piece together, Margaret (Lefler) Yant was actually the daughter of John Yant (b 1776 Allegheny Co, PA; d abt 1810) and Catherine Bright [Brecht], (b 1784, Pittsburgh PA, d 1867, Sarpy Co, NE). Catherine Bright married Lefler in a second marriage after 1810 and daughter Margaret took his name.

are you keeping updatd via overtonsonly?

thre is at site 3 Henry Stillman Overtons 1851-1910, 1891-1962, 1915-?
do NOT use sr. Jr. those traditionally mean simply elder & younger, They frequently do NOT mean father & son. & when the elder dies the younger automatically becaomes senior. in older "correct" usage it maybe GF & GS, Uncle/nephew or cousins. Ages may only be a few years difference. A lot of folks currently do not understand that.

also Adolphus H Overton was born 1850-1905 he did evidently have a lot of Creek/Cherokee Indian blood. He is registered with Cahaba Creek Tribal association.

Hey, it's me again and I have found more information on my grandfather. In the 1920 census he was listed as Stillman Overton in the home of a negress listed as a nephew. Coincidentally the law in Texas was changed regarding mixed marriage or carnal relations to a penalty of up to five years imprisonment. So there is evidence that maybe his father couldn't marry his mother. Ironically the "one drop" rules enacted in 1910 didn't seem to apply to him because he retained his "status" as a mulatto, albeit a shade or two darker than his father. I mentioned his father because I found him as well as the father before him. Both men were named Henery S. Overton. Both were listed on the census as mulattoes. I saw two pictures of the younger, who was born in 1891 and they appear caucasian on both images, they being him and his wife at the time. Another possible ancestor (father of the elder Henery) is an Adolphus H. Overton who must have lived as early as 1825, and his eventual census status or racial designation is another hot topic for me. I have found out much more (possible Native American or Black Indian ties in maternal grandmother's family) but would welcome any further assistance, especially regarding people living around Travis, TX named Alice Woods, Pauline Overton, Belle Overton, or Cora Steptoe. Thanks again

Seeking info on JAMES T. OVERTON. He is listed on the 1900 Federal Census with residence in Spotsylvania County, VA. His wife is listed as Letitia Overton. It is believed that Letitia’s maiden name was Almond. It is believed Letitia was married to CARTER before being married to OVERTON. She had children by Carter.

James T. Overton signs letters with J. T. Overton. He died in Richmond, Virginia probably after 1921 in prison\jail. It is said that he was to be released from prison but made the decision to remain in prison and died in prison.

I would like to learn the death date with location and actual name of the prison, name and location of the burial site, any newspaper article, and any other info that is available. At this time, the only information that I have is listed above. J.T. Overton is the grandfather of someone I am helping with research.
Thomas Jefferson Overton. Amanda's was not the only scandal at the time. It seems my great grandfather, Pleasant Miles Holloway, took a shine to Thomas Jefferson Overton's wife, Lucy Jane Miles, and traded his daughter, Elizabeth Lutisha Holloway, for Lucy. Mother always said the 4 of them and some children left for Texas, but I have discovered they settled in Oklahoma. I don't know what happened to Lucy (another puzzle I wish I could find) but P M came back to Randolph County with 2 of his children by her and my great grandmother raised them as her own. My great grandfather never divorced my great grandmother, but he had children by other women while they were married. A son of T J and Tish Overton, Dock Overton, was raised in Randolph County and is in the household of my great grandparents in the 1880 census as well as the 1900 census. There is more to this scandal that you may already know. I try not to be too hard on the women of this era. Seems like they had little control over their lives and times were very hard right after the Civil War.
John Henry HILL had a relationship outside of his marriage to Martha Ann OVERTON HILL, with Martha's sister Margret Amanda E OVERTON who was unmarried.

As a result of this relationship Margret became pregnant and bore a son, James M OVERTON. It is unlikely that James M OVERTON ever knew his father was John Henry HILL, since Margret was single and gave James her own surname, OVERTON. Such things were seldom spoken of, even in whispers. Margaret Amanda OVERTON went by her maiden name all her life. By the 1860 Census she had a child and from then forward she lived continually next door to John Henry HILL. The child James M. OVERTON was born in 1855 when Margret Amanda was 19 years old and at the time John Henry HILL and Martha Ann OVERTON HILL had been married for a long time. Martha Ann OVERTON HILL was 9 years older than her sister Margret Amanda OVERTON.

It has been proven through DNA testing that James M OVERTON was of the bloodline named HILL, an ironic twist considering that DNA testing excludes any possibility that John Henry HILL himself could be a biological HILL. Thus, James M OVERTON is an OVERTON by his mother's bloodline, but he was fathered by John Henry HILL. Research is currently being done to discover who the biological father of John Henry HILL is, if it is possible to do so, and thereby learn the paternal bloodline of James M OVERTON. A CARVER line has shown DNA connections to both this line of HILL and this line of OVERTON.

Which of Amanda's brothers married into your tree? Have you ever heard any rumors about Amanda-- you would think she would have been a huge scandal during that time.

No one in may family knows anything-- it was always hush, hush. There is a disparity in the birth years 1744 vs 1750, but both are from Virginia. Did you sort out the other obadiah's data?
I am related to North L. Overton, though not directly. He is the son of William Overton and Catherine Lefler. I don't have much information on North. He is married to Sarah Jane Clifton and they were married on 15 Dec 1866. I don't have any children listed for them. I have North as being born on 24 Aug 1843, Jasper Co., Indiana and Sarah being born abt. 1844 in Illinois. North's father, William is the son of Rueben B. Overton, (abt. 1783, Richmond, VA to Aug 1826, Campbell, KY) and Nancy Glore (abt. 1788, of Alecandrea, Campbell, KY to 1853, Rush Co., Indiana). My line comes through Williams brother, Robert B. Overton. Hope this helps and if I can help further, let me know. Becky

Re: Absolom Overton

Thanks for your response!

Your clues helped me find a google book of Hardeman County History that will help fill some gaps!

I wish I could be more help. It was my grandfather's (Travis Dale Goss) family and I grew up not knowing any of them. Travis Goss would've been a great-grandson of Sam L.

I have a photo of Susie Malinda Overton and husband. I suspect there might be some other Overton's in family photos, but I have no one to help identify them.
