Owsley Family Historical Society Annual Meeting 2012

The Owsley Family Historical Society is hosting our annual meeting in Independence, Missouri this year May 31st through June 2nd. We gather in a different location each year and focus on the Owsley/Ousley/Housley families that we have researched in the past year in addition to some local sight-seeing. We can't wait to see the Truman home, Morman Visitor's Center, and maybe the Vaile Mansion. We enjoy seeing each other each year and have a great deal of fun!

Genealogists will want to come early or stay late to research at the wonderful Mid-Continent Library. Mid-Continent has the third largest genealogical collection in the U.S. and has moved to new quarters since our last visit.

Connie Howard has arranged for us to meet at the Hilton Garden Inn once again. Details will be in the registration packet that will be sent to OFHS members soon. So save the dates, tell you relatives, and meet us in Missouri!

If you would like more information about our group, please look at our website www.ofhs.org or we are on Facebook as well. Sheila Patterson, our Treasurer, would love to hear from you if you have questions about the meeting or need additional information. Her email address is lmnop9@juno.com.

We would love to see you there!

Barbara Gressel
Publicity Director
Owsley Family Historical Society

It sounds like you have lots of information which would be useful in extending the information we currently have on the descendants of John Jackson Owsley, Sr. We have no pictures, etc. of any of the folks you mention; have seen one (and only one) picture of John Jackson Owsley, Jr, and believe it was taken in the 1920's. One of my wife's first cousins has said picture. We have what appears to be somewhat fragmentary information on most of those people. We would be happy to exchange any information we have that may be useful to you. We did visit Watertown, SD this past October. Strange as it may seem, the local historians told us that we were the first people they know about who went there seeking information on the Owsley's, even though they were a fairly prominent family there from 1879 until about the 1930's. Our personal email address is farnze@charter.net. We are on a fairly high speed connection, so we can download pictures, documents, etc. We look forward to hearing from you. My wife and I are both charter members of the Owsley Family Historical Society, founded in 1979 at Lexington, KY. OFHS has an annual meeting (national) at varying places, with Independence, MO being the site of the 2012 meeting (dates not set, yet). Greg / Mary Jean Owsley Farnsworth.

My wife is a descendant of John Jackson Owsley, Sr. and his second wife, Harriett Major. Mary Elizabeth Owsley, daughter of JJO, Sr and his first wife Sarah Amanda Peppard, married Clifford Walrath, March 24, 1863, at Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin. So far as I know, the Walrath's had four children: Catherine ("Kitty"), John F., Edward J., and Frank C. Catherine "Kitty" Walrath married Charles W. Stone, May 22, 1883, in Monroe County, Wis. They had at least one child (the only one we know even the least about), Fred R. Stone, born June 15, 1894, Monroe County, Wis. We've been looking for descendants of Mary Elizabeth Owsley for many years without success. -- Greg and Mary Jean (Owsley) Farnsworth.

Hi there...=)
I'm a Pearl descendant..and working on the Pearl line. Just got back from a visit to London and Crab Orchard... cried when I had to leave, wanted to stay. I live in Texas..and it's wayyy to hot to enjoy it right now.

Mary Polly Owsley died: 15 Dec 1853, Lincoln, Ky
they are probably buried in one of umpteen cemeteries in and around Crab Orchard.

I have found where Alexander and Myra Black Pearl are buried and believe it to be on the old Pearl land... there are little cemeteries on every little hill around there...and many aren't documented. Some are..and listed as "Unknown" with the historical society..and there are Pearls listed...but just the name "Pearl"..and I couldn't find the cemeteries with the time I had to look. It would take a couple of weeks of searching... and there is nothing I'd love to do more... so if you ever want to have a partner in hunting cemeteries in Laurel County... I'd love to help...just not this year...we drove 8000 miles and were gone 42 days on our trip...LOL...time to stay home a while! I am trying to solve the mystery of William Smith Pearl...and his unknown wives or lovers... lots of kids I'm trying to find parents to, too... like the orphans of Nudigit ...John, Sarah and Nancy Pearl... your help on that was appreciated. Now I've got Henry, Patterson and Sarah, I'm trying to find the parents for. My email is: gingerandrews@gmail.com... I have a Pearl family website...with pictures and history posted.....and would love to have you join us.

2011 Owsley Family Historical Society Annual Meeting

To all Owsleys/Ousleys/Housleys:

This year the Owsley Family Historical Society Annual Meeting will be held in Macon, GA. Here is a little information about the meeting.

2011 ANNUAL MEETING--JUNE 2-4, MACON, GEORGIA

In June, we'll meet in the lovely old southern city of Macon, Georgia. President Ronny Bodine has mentioned he visits the Genealogical and Historical Room of the
Washington Memorial Library as often as possible. The collection is outstanding because so many Macon residents have left generous bequests. Holdings include English heritage.

Macon is situated on the Ocmulgee River. It's also right on I-75 which makes it convenient for those driving up from Florida or down from Tennessee. Macon boasts antebellum houses and an abundance of museums. Poet Sidney Lanier's cottage is there as well as the Tubman Museum of African American History, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the Hay House which was featured on A&E's "America's Castles". The Ocmulgee National Monument across the river covers 12,000 years of American Indian history. One can go into our continent's only constructed earth lodge, climb to the top of the temple mound, see prehistoric trenches, and view the site of a colonial British trading post.

Connie Howard has arranged for us to meet at The Ramada Plaza Hotel right downtown where we'll be close to historic sites, museums, restaurants, cafes, etc. It's sixteen stories high at 108 First Street near Riverside Drive. Phone is (478) 746-1461.

Amenities include an outdoor pool, sauna, fitness center, restaurant, lounge, wireless internet, business center, and parking. Macon has an airport and is approximately an hour from Atlanta International Airport. Reservation details will be mailed to OFHS members in the spring Registration Packet.

You may want to request Macon visitor's information from the Macon Convention and Visitor's Bureau at www.visitmacon.org or (800) 768-3401. The Ramada will honor the special OFHS rate both before and after our meeting for those who want more research and/or sight seeing time.
Sheila Patterson

For more information, visit our Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=134436626569670

Thanks,
Barb Gressel

2009 Owsley Family Historical Society Annual Meeting

Mark your calendars for the 2009 Owsley Family Historical Society Annual
Meeting, June 11-13, Louisville, Kentucky

Details at our revised website- www.ofhs.org

Save the date, make plans, and tell your relatives we'll gather in
Louisville in June for three days of Owsley/Ousley/Housley family sharing,
history, and fun. We'll begin with the traditional Thursday evening dessert
social--bring photos, new genealogical finds, and tall tales. Our outings
include a very special visit to the Frazier International History Museum
founded by Owsley Brown Frazier, Louisville philanthropist and former
Vice-Chairman of the Brown-Forman Corporation. The Museum brings together
two collections--the founder's priceless collection of historical
objects--from the family Bible of Daniel Boone to the "big stick" of
President Theodore Roosevelt AND displays and artifacts from Britain's Royal
Armouries (including the Tower of London). The scope of the museum is from
the Battle of Hastings in 1066 (in which our ancestors took part) through
Teddy Roosevelt's Presidency and his subsequent African safari--set in over
100,000 square feet of a restored historical building.

We'll also visit a gem for genealogical research, the Filson Historical
Society's Library. The extensive collection focuses on Kentucky, the Upper
South, and the Ohio Valley (gateway to westward expansion). Holdings
reflect origin and destination states for the migrants: Virginia, North
Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Missouri. The Library has over
3,500 family histories, nearly 4,000 Kentucky genealogy files, 840
newspapers, much original sheet music, and a Civil War collection. Open
days Monday through Friday and first Saturday.

An optional riverboat dinner cruise on the Ohio River is planned for Friday
evening. Service is buffet style and there's an open bar. And we should be
on the river for sunset.

As always, we end the annual meeting with our Saturday evening banquet.Come
early, stay late--there's so much to do and see in Louisville. Sights
include the Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Derby Museum, Kentucky Museum of Art
and Craft, Farmington Historic House Museum, and Locust Grove (last home of
General George Rogers Clark circa 1790--and stopping
point for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their return from the
Pacific).

fI am searching for a Martha E. or Marthaa J. Housley who was born in about 1825 in either KY or IL based on two different answers to census questions. Martha is my great Grandmother. She married a Richard A. Allen in Coosa Co., AL. on March 24, 1844. Can someone identify this lady. No Housley's were in the area in 1850 so I do not know how she arrived in Coosa Co. Another thing is that she was supposely Indian but that is not for sure.
Thanks for your offer. I cannot recall exactly what I asked for that long ago, but you may have some information that I lack.

I have the parents of William Dawson Owsley as Joshua Betterton Owsley, MD and Catherine J. Withrow. Catherine died in 1875 and Joshua died in 1912 both in Jacksonburg, OH. I have found the graves of Catherine and William's brother, Samuel, but cannot locate Joshua's grave.

An obiturary from 1912 says that he was to be buried in the Middletown Cemetery, but after looking at every stone in that cemetery we could not find him. We did check lists for other cemeteries in the area, but still didn't locate him. If you have any information on his grave, it would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Fred

Hi, I am a little confused on your relationship to Thornton Owsley. Please help. My relationship is that my grandmother was Bessie Belle Owsley Kuykendall, my mother was Jean L Kuykendall Schoolnik. So Thornton was my great great grandfather. How are you related to Thornton or Bessie Belle?
Thank you!
