Hello, thank you so much for replying. My email address is

heyjude1945@tiscali.co.uk

If you scan the letter to your computer you can attach it to the email, this is the simplist way of doing things I think.
Hello Audrey, its a year since I emailed you - wondered if you are able to sort out the letter from the lady in Australia you said you had, it would be great if you could, it may be the lead we need. Still no luck with John Henry Oxberry - we are up against a brick wall.

Regards Judy

I found this bit but I can't be sure it is the person you are looking for:

CHRISTOPHER OXBERRY was a Cherokee residing in the Chickasaw country, and acted as interperter for the missionary Joseph Bullen in 1799. He was last mentioned in 1805 when he was interperter at the 1805 treaty proceedings. He married Molly Colbert, daughter of General William Colbert, and was the father of two daughters:

1 Elizabeth Oxberry who married twice, 1st to James Harris and 2nd to Malcolm McGee. The first husband, James Harris, was a white resident among the Chickasaw and he and Elizabeth had a son, Cyrus Harris, born in August 1817. The couple seperated and Elizabeth later married for the 2nd time to Malcolm McGee, also a white. Malcolm had previously been married to a Choctaw woman. Malcolm and Elizabeth had a daughter named Jane. In 1821 Elizabeth took the daughter and left Malcolm.

2 Sally Oxberry, born in 1796, died 1896, who married Martin Colbert and Isaac Alberson. Martin Colbert had three wives, Sally Oxberry, Sally Allen, and Lucy Allen. Martin ans Sally Colbert did not have any children, although Martin did have children by his other two wives. Sally later married Isaac Alberson, who became a Chickasaw chief. She died in 1896.

Molly Colbert Oxberry was married to settler James Gunn by 1818.

Source:
WHO WAS WHO AMONG THE SOUTHERN INDIANS 1698 - 1907, by Don martini, published 1998, pages 12, 143, 431, 500.

Maureen's father told her he had a sister who went to Australia. When I saw your message about a letter from a lady from Australia researching Oxberry's perhaps the link we need.

In the book, WHO WAS WHO AMONG THE SOUTHERN INDIANS 1698 - 1900 by Don Martini:

OXBERRY, CHRISTOPHER a Cherokee resident in the Chickasaw country who acted as interperter for the missionary Joseph Bullen in 1799. He was last mentioned in 1805 when he was interperter at the 1805 treaty proceedings. He married MOLLY COLBERT, the daughter of GENERAL WILLIAM COLBERT, and was the father of two daughters: ELIZABETH OXBERRY ( she married James Harris and Malcomb McGee), and SALLY OXBERRY (born in 1794, died 1896 married MARTIN COLBERT and ISAAC ALBERSON), MOLLY COLBERT OXBERRY married to JAMES GUNN by 1818.

There are also several other Oxberry names listed, all of which are shown enrolled as either Chickasaw or Choctaw. One note which may guide you to other resources is the fact that the Colbert name is highly prominent in both the Chickasaw and Choctaw records. I would check them out.
CHRISTOPHER OXBERRY was a Cherokee resident of the Chickasaw country, acting as interperter for the missionary, Joseph Bullen, in 1709. He was last mentioned in 1805, when he was an interperter at the 1805 treaty proceedings. He married Molly Colbert, the daughter of General William Colbert, and was the father of two daughters, Elizabeth, who married James Harris and Malcom McGee, and Sally, who married Martin Colbert and Isaac Alberson. By 1818, Molly Colbert Oxberry had married to a settler named James Gunn.

Source of info:

WHO WAS WHO AMONG THE SOUTHRN INDIANS 1698 - 1907, by Don Martini

CHICKASAW TRADITIONS, by Warren, page 546

1818 Chickasaw Census

Geneal William Colbert was a Chickasaw Chief, who was born about 1750.
At the moment I am trying to trace my family's family tree. My husband's grandfather was Thomas Oxberry born in 1870 in Blaydon, Northumberland, he eventually settled and married in Yorkshire; by 1881 he had brothers called George and James and a sister Mary Ann.
His great grandparents were Thomas Oxberry born in 1840 in Harwent Hill, Durham and Hannah - born in York; both Thomas's were galss blowers.
I have not yet proof but I think his great great grandparents were Willian and Elizabeth Oxberry, William being born in Gateshead in 1821 and his wife's maiden name was Jordan, he too was a glass maker.
Do you think you are able to help me with your large number of Oxberry names?
Many thanks
Christine Newbould

Dear Colin or any other Oxberry's, I am just starting my search, and am not sure how to go about it. I would be interested and happy to hear from and about the name Oxberry. I am from Ontario, Canada but my father was from England. He died when I was an enfant, so I do not have alot of knowledge about my fathers background. I am going to hunt through papers. His name was James and he died in 1959, he had one sibling, a brother Maurice. I will keep seeking and I hope to hear from you. Patricia
My name is Christopher Oxberry, living in Finglas, Dublin, Ireland.

My fathers name was Thomas, his brother was Joseph who emigrated to Paisley, Scotland about 50 years ago. Maybe it is that Audrey was refeering to in her message.

I was suprised to hear that Audrey was living in Dublin, as I had thought that my family were the only Oxberrys in Dublin. My father was born around 1880 in Dublin, and as far as I know, his family were from Dublin going right back.

My son Tommy is planning to do some research into the family tree soon, so maybe he might contact some people on this site.

regards

Chisty Oxberry

(ps. this is my grandsons email account, reply to him and he will pass the reply back onto to me and my son.)

Hello, Donna - Christopher Phillip Oxberry was my ancestor, too. He married Molly Colbert in about 1780. He died 4 January 1806 in the Chickasaw Nation in Mississipi.

http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/kma/COLBERT/i0001362.htm#...

Molly and Christopher were the parents of Elizabeth Oxberry who was the mother of Cyrus Harris, the well known first governor of the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma.

I have e-mailed Colin to see if he has any more info. What branch of the family are you in?

Donna Shirley
dshirley@earthlink.net

I don't know very much about Oxberry, but I will try and find out some information. It is a extremely small community. It does not have any stores. It is pretty much a farmland community in the Mississippi Delta. I will try and find out how it got its name and get back to you. Ireland sounds like such a wonderful place and I hope that my husband and I will get to travel there when we retire, but that will be another 35 to 40 years from now. It was very nice to hear from you.
Janine
