You should have started a new topic as your question does not pertain to Red House Farm.

The only information that I have is from a PAFA record sheet which shows that the given name of his wife was Eunice, with no surname, date or place of marriage given. If the marriage took place in Massachusetts I can find no published record of it.

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co.

Red House Farm in Stonham Aspal, childhood home of Samuel Packard, is for sale. A nearby resident of Stonham Aspal has informed me that the lady who owns the farm is frail and unwell, and that it has been put up for sale. While it is still listed you can see a description of the property with twenty photographs at:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-189325...

Dale H.
Hi, I'm also the great great great grandchild of John Bird. Would love to be in touch with you. There will be a Bird family reunion in Rockland in August of 2012. I descend through Almon Bird and I am working with a relative who descends through Hanson Gregory Bird. She is the one who has the great collection of Bird photos. Some date to before the Civil War. Have you looked at my site on Ancestry.com? Which of the 10 children of John Bird do you come through? Will figure out how to get my e-mail to you and my phone number. Your cousin from Wyoming

My online copies of Packard's Progress are essentially complete. Note that I do not have Volume 16, and neither does Richard G. Packard, who has the reprint edition. That volume is apparently very hard to come by. If you have a physical copy of Volume 16 and can help complete this collection, please email me at the link on the entry point for the collection, which is:

http://plymouthcolony.net/resources/packardsprogress/progres...

Also note that I now have Volume 37, pp. 17-22 and have updated the PDF of that volume.

Dale H.
Re: Putting Packard's Progress Online

I have had a busy weekend. Thanks to Richard Packard I now have a nearly complete set of Packard's Progress. This weekend I have added volumes 5-8 to the online collection. The entry point remains:

http://plymouthcolony.net/resources/packardsprogress/progres...

Some people have suggested that it would be ideal to have searchable copies of the volumes. That is simply not practical for me to do. These PDF files are created from page images (scans). Searchable PDF files are normally created from word processor files, which Adobe Acrobat converts into searchable PDF files. In order to create searchable filed from page images those images would first have to be converted to text using an optical character recognition (OCR) program. The converted text can then be embedded in the PDF file so that it can be searched.

While I have some years of experience in creating searchable PDF files from word processor documents, and about twenty years of experience with optical character recognition, trying to create searchable PDFs of Packard's Progress would involve an immense amount of time, probably increasing the amount of time involved by a factor of at least fifty times (and possibly much, much more). That is because the first thirty-one volumes were created photocopying, cutting, pasting, and again photocopying. The material in those volumes comes from many sources, using a large variety of fonts and point sizes, and is sometimes of poor quality which can be read by a human mind but is difficult for a computer to work with. In order to be accurate optical character recognition needs to be trained to recognize each of the fonts and point sizes to be converted. Even then careful proofreading is required. Because of the variety of source material involved this would be an immense task, one that I cannot undertake given my work as Plymouth County, MA, Coordinator for the USGenWeb Project, the dozens of genealogical web sites that I maintain, and the dozens of genealogical message boards and mailing lists (including this one) in which I participate.

If someone else has the appropriate software, skills, and (most of all) possibly months of time to OCR the page images, then proofread and correct the result (and, preferably, have at least one other person proofread and correct), I have the capability to incorporate that text into the PDF files to make them basically searchable (a search would probably not point to the exact spot in a page image matching the search criteria, but would point to the correct page, and possibly to the approximate location in the page). The only alternative would be to type all of the text into word processor files, which would still need to be proofread and corrected (preferably by at least two people).

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co.
I have begun to post volumes of Packard's Progress. Thanks to Richard Packard the first four volumes are online - many of you may not have seen the early volumes edited by Jeri Packard Schlerf. Richard has sent me more early volumes and I will work on those this weekend. I've also posted volumes 15 and 17-21 scanned from my copies. All volumes are in PDF files. The entry point, which will be revised as more volumes are added, contains a listing of the major contents of each volume:

http://plymouthcolony.net/resources/packardsprogress/progres...

Dale H.
Putting Packard's Progress Online

I have begun the rather large task of scanning my issues of Packard's Progress and putting them into PDF files. Those files will be posted on my web site for all to access - I will keep you informed about the progress. The first batch should be online within about a week. I am assembling a list of major articles in each issue, and that list will also be posted. Eventually, if I get ambitious, I may undertake an every-name index (although that will be a lot of work).

I think this is a worthwhile effort, as I know of no complete sets in libraries other than NEHGS and the Library of Congress (though I suppose one or more of the libraries in the Bridgewaters might have a set). There is so much useful information in those issues that I believe they should be available to all.

I do not have a complete collection, and have a few missing or damaged pages in the issues that I do own. I would like to ask your help to try to make this collection complete. If you have any of the issues (or pages) that I lack, and you have a flatbed scanner, you can help by scanning pages (I will let you know what scanner settings to use) and emailing the raw scans to me. I will crop and adjust the images so all issues will match as closely as possible, and assemble the PDFs for posting. Here is what I lack:

Volumes 1 - 14
Volume 15 (I have Issue 3, Aug. 1990, but need the other issues in that volume)
Volume 16
Volume 35 to the end of publication - was that 1999?

In addition, I need copies of the following pages, which are missing or damaged:

Volume 15, Issue 3 (Aug., 1990), pp. 70-72 - LDS / IGI as of 1988 for Mass.
Volume 20 (Nov., 1991), p. 23

If you would like to help, please email me at:

webmaster [at] plymouthcolony.net (Please don't use the Ancestry/RootsWeb messaging service, which can be frustrating for someone who is not an Ancestry subscriber).

Please note that I will delete the names and addresses from the mailing labels to protect members' privacy.

Dale H.
I have never heard of PLLPS. PAFA is an acronym for the Packard and Allied Familes Association, a now defunct family society whose newsletter was Packard's Progress. It is not held by many libraries - NEHGS is likely to hold a complete run.

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co.
Re: John Harris Packard

> I was wondering if anyone has a source that verifies this information.

I find no record in any of the four Bridgewaters of any John Packard born or baptized in 1748.

Abiel Packard and Abigail Harris were married at Bridgewater 18-Dec-1815 [Bridgewater VR 2:158, 273]. She was from Abington and her intention was published there 26-Mar-1815 [Abington VR 2:98, 150]. Your information is incorrect - they were likely both born long after the supposed 1754 birth date of your John Harris.

Note that middle names were extremely uncommon in New England in the middle of the eighteenth century - they did not become common until the following century. In a quarter of a century of Packard research I have found only thirteen of the surname with a recorded middle name or middle initial born prior to 1800.

If the information was from PAFA, do you have the number of the PAFA record sheet where it was found? It might have been published in Packard's Progress.

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co.
I have seen both of these sources cited quite a bit with regards to the Packard family. What do they both mean, and can I find either in print form? (Or if someone has a copy, I would also greatly appreciate a couple of things copied from these sources). Thanks!

Hello cousin -

I googled Abiel Packard and Abigail Harris, and it took me to the Vital records of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, to the year 1850, Volume 2, page 273: BRIDGEWATER MARRIAGES - Abiel [PACKARD] and Abigail Harris of Abington, Dec. 18, 1815. Not much, but a quick search produces at least this much info. Hope it's a help, at least a little bit.

Blessings, Paulette Packard Johnson

I am looking for information on John Harris Packard's parents. I know he was born in 1748 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and died in Ohio. His parents were Abiel Packard, Jr. and Abigail Harris, I know, but I was wondering if anyone has a source that verifies this information. I have seen posted a few places that this information is in the PLLPS & PAFA (not sure what PLLPS is), but I was wondering where I could find this information in published form.

fascinating to read this as I am also a descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins as well as a Packard descendant though via a different line. I can trace my family back to the Aldens through several connections (Snell, Copeland, Kingman, Leonard)as well as to Mary Packard who married Joseph Leonard.

I'm currently trying to trace more than just the roots. If anyone has any history, anectdotes etc on the families, I'd love to hear them. I have a lot of geneology done already and would love to help anyone else trying to trace these lines.

As I was saying before, your father's work on the Packard genealogy was extensive and very helpful, and based on the letters we have from him, he seems like he was a nice person, too. If you want me to e-mail you scanned copies the letters I have from him, I'd be happy to do so.

Thank you also for continuing his legacy regarding the Packard family genealogy.

Sincerely,

Mary E.

Clarence A. Packard was captain of the schooner Almon Bird when it went down near Boon Island. He did freeze his feet but were not amputated. Apparently some surgery was done to trim off some of the worst frostbite. He went on to be a merchant in Rockland. Courier Gazette 1894... Clarence A. Packard b. in Rockland 20 July 1852, has been master mariner, now wholesale dealer of fish. Died in Union 8 Nov 1916 buried Achorn Cemetery in Rockland with the rest of the Birds. The ship Almon Bird was named for my ancestor Almon Bird who was a lime dealer and brother to Harriet Bird Packard. We are looking for photos of these relatives. We have an album with photos from abt 1840 to 1900 of the Bird family think some could be Packards but some are not identified. Can anyone help?

I have very little information about Clarence A. Packard and no means of identifying photos of his descendants. He and I are 5th cousins, 3 times removed. His wife was Arminda Hall, born 26 Mar 1853, St. George (then Lincoln Co.) Knox Co., Maine. She died 25 Nov 1943. They were married 4 Dec 1873. Arminda's parents were Andrew J. Hall and Louise Keene.
All I have for children is Marion Hills, male?, born 15 Aug 1883 at Rockland, Knox Co., Maine; a son who died young; Harlan, born 26 Jan 1896, died 11 Jul 1899; Freeman H., no dates or other information; Harland Merrick, no dates, died at age 3 yr. I don't know if the unnamed son was one of the two named who died young.

A great uncle of Clarence's was Daniel Packard, founder of Bear Hill Farm in Rockland, Maine. The following published genealogy may provide leads to people who can identify people in the photos you have.

Packard, Daniel A. Jr., and Bartlett, Ruth Packard; Typescript “The Ancestors and Descendants of Daniel Packard 1783-1853, Founder of Bear Hill Farm, Rockport, Maine;” 2nd ed., Aug. 1986. In 1986 this was available at Goodspeed's Book Shop, Inc., Boston, MA. Libraries at Camden, Rockland, Rockport, and Thomaston, Maine may still have copies, also NEHGS, Boston.

I believe Nancy Jordan was born in 1810, probably in Maine, daughter of Jedediah Jordan and Rachel Turner.
See "Descendants of Jesse Humphrey in Old Bristol, Maine" by Kimberly on RootsWeb. I have nothing more on that line.

Simon Packard's paternal line is: Nehemiah (1762-1850) and Betty/Betsy Bennett Bray (1764-1816); Reuben Packard (1737-1820) and Anne Perkins (abt 1738-1806); James Packard (1691-1765) and Jemima Keith (1701-1763); Zaccheus Packard ( abt 1650-1723) and Sarah Howard (1648-aft 1701); and the immigrant couple (1638) from Suffolk Co., England, Samuel Packard (abt 1612-1684) and Elizabeth Unknown* (bef 1622-aft 1686).

*Elizabeth's maiden name is frequently stated as being "Stream" but no evidence has been found that this is true. The origin of this unsupported assumption is unknown.

Maine did not become a state until 1820. Previously, it was the Province of Maine and was under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I believe genealogical records for early residents of the Province of Maine should show Maine and not omit it and not just show Massachusetts. This is to avoid confusion because a number of towns in Maine have the same name as towns in Mass., often probably because early inhabitants were immigrants from Mass.

At one time all three children lived near John George and Nora in Perkins Co. SD, but my grandparents, Frank and Pearl Van Slooten were the only family that stayed. I think some of the Packard homestead is still in the family, or at least borders it. Let me know via Email if you want more info on our branch. I met Jim Packard many years ago, but that was before I started searching the family . I would love to hear more about William Earl's family. Lynda

Posting on this thread so others can share.

William Earl Packard married Minnie Snyder and they had 4 children all born in OH. My mother was Hazel, the only daughter. I have seen names of his wife/children listed on Rootsweb, but they are not correct. Since you called her Rilla, that must be your line as her given name was Pearl Anna. The Packard's were gypsy-like. Never stay in one spot. Rilla was born in NE, did she stay there or move on like so many others?

> each and every Packard are of the same blood line

That is not correct. There have been other immigrants of the surname (and of often confused similar surnames such as Packer), and immigrants of other surnames (predominantly Central European) which were Anglicized to Packard. At best I would say that at least 90% of American Packards can be shown to be descendants of Samuel and Elizabeth. Note that surgeon Thomas Packer of NH and Thomas Packer of Salem have often been falsely claimed as members of Samuel and Elizabeth Packard's family.

There are also many cases of Packards as early as about 1700 whose ancestry is suspected to derive from immigrants Samuel and Elizabeth, but whose descent from that couple has never been proven, such as Joseph Packard of Easton, MA, husband of Hannah Manley.

Dale H.
